S
ummer is finally here! It seems like it has been forever since I’ve seen such
beautiful, warm sunshine here in Cleveland. (Anyone else live in an area like
that?) In reality, though, this winter and spring just flew by, with many exciting
happenings for CBMT. As I reflect on the first half of 2016, one statement continues
to come to mind (perhaps because it’s a presidential election year)—the state of the
Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) is strong!
As of May 26, 2016, there were 6,857
certificants, an increase from 6,712
certificants in 2015. Recertification
rates remain high, with the average
recertification renewal rate per cycle
at 82%. Certificants value their MTBC credential as a greater number of
employers now require the MT-BC
credential to practice music therapy.
The public has a higher degree of
awareness of what it means to be a
board certified music therapist. And
the state recognition plan partnership
between CBMT and AMTA continues
to lead to greater understanding of the
importance of the MT-BC credential.
In 2015, CBMT administered 1,003
examinations compared to 911
examinations in 2014. This number
includes new candidates, those taking
the exam for recertification, and those
retaking the exam if they failed. CBMT
now has 95 Approved Providers for
Continuing Music Therapy Education,
which is

self-study
options
continue to
grow.

We enjoyed meeting both certificants and students,
answering questions and talking about the certification
process. We valued having the opportunity to put faces
to names. The collaboration between Dena Register,
Kimberly Sena Moore, and Judy Simpson continues to be
very productive and effective. We greatly value this vital
working relationship between AMTA and CBMT.
Some important announcements:
• A second Self-Assessment Exam (SAE-Form B) is now
available on the CBMT website. This is an additional
tool to help candidates further prepare for the
CBMT exam.
• CBMT has developed a new MT-BC Use of Credential
Trademark Policy (see this newsletter for details). This
policy outlines the permitted uses of the MT-BC
trademarked credential and consequences for its misuse.
Two quick reminders:
• Effective next January (1/1/17), the CBMT exam will no
longer be an option for recertification. As part of our
continued focus on supporting the needs of certificants,
CBMT is currently reviewing the recertification process
to streamline policies and procedures.
• Also, candidates needing to retake the exam for
initial certification need only wait for a minimum
of 30 days to retake the exam rather than 90 days
(effective 11/1/15).

It is my honor and privilege to serve as your CBMT Chair
of the Board of Directors for 2016. I began my journey
with CBMT in January 2006. That was the same year I
started my private practice and we welcomed our second
daughter. Over these past 10½ years, I have learned much
more than I ever thought possible while serving on the
Continuing Education Committee (six years) and the
Board of Directors (five years). My experiences in serving
our profession through CBMT have been invaluable, both
professionally and personally.

Past Chair, Certification Board for Music Therapists
A
s 2015 and my term on the CBMT board of directors came to a close,
I found myself looking back on what we’ve accomplished as a community
and envisioning the future.
We have more board certified music
therapists than ever and are fast
approaching 7,000 MT-BC’s. I am
amazed at the continued growth
and development of board certified
music therapists and the innovative
opportunities for continuing education
both in person and online. State
recognition, fueled by an incredible
regulatory affairs team, task forces and
individual advocacy efforts, continues
to increase recognition of the MTBC credential and access to services.
Reflecting the vision and mission,
CBMT remains a credentialing leader
both in the United States
and internationally.
My past five years with CBMT has
been eventful but the growth and
development of CBMT and the MT-BC
credential has been rooted in a strong
foundation. Nurtured and cared for
by many passionate volunteers and
staff over the past 29 years, board
certification has reached new heights.
I am thankful that I have had the
opportunity to meet many who have
served CBMT both past and present
and work alongside visionaries in
our field.
As we continue to build on this legacy,
let us remember that each MT-BC is the
face of board certification to those they
meet and an advocate for our profession.
Individual efforts, magnified by many
across the country and around the
world make a big impact to the field
of music therapy, board certification,
music therapists and the clients we serve.
Thank you, MT-BC’s for all you have
done and continue to do for our
growing music therapy community. ▲

our Regulatory Affairs team (Dr. Dena Register, Regulatory Affairs Advisor
and Dr. Kimberly Sena Moore, Regulatory Affairs Associate) were hard at work
throughout the spring following twelve pieces of legislation that address the need
for professional recognition in various states. It is our pleasure to partner with Judy
Simpson, Director of Government Relations, and Maria Fay, Government Relations
Specialist, from the American Music Therapy Association. While many states have
wrapped up their legislative work for this year, there are still active bills in New
Jersey, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

We are proud to offer hearty
congratulations to two states that had
legislation pass this session. Oklahoma
passed a music therapy licensure bill
in mid-April with the help of Suzy
Heppel, Jennifer Voss, Sophia Lee,
Heather Malcolm, Amber Loomis,
Katy Kirk, Rebecca Cantrell, Hayoung
Lim and Brandy Jenkins. Additionally,
the Connecticut State Task Force was
successful in advocating for Title
Protection for music therapists. Many
thanks go to Jennifer Sokira, Heather
Wagner and Emily Bevelaqua for their
support in Connecticut.

legislative visits with lawmakers in order to encourage
them to vote in favor of the music therapy licensure bill, as
well as a drum circle in the Capital rotunda. Additionally,
the Pennsylvania Task Force hosted an Advocacy
Breakfast to recognize supporters and employers of music

The Idaho Task Force planned and facilitated an Advocacy
Training and Hill Day event in March during the Western
Region annual conference. CBMT Regulatory Affairs
Associate Kimberly Sena Moore joined music therapists

to educate them about the music therapy profession
and the need to create a form of state recognition. Many

“Three is a magic number, yes it is, it’s a magic number!”
Children of the 1970s will recognize this song as one of dozens from Schoolhouse Rock!,
a series of animated music videos featuring educational topics. When it comes to
music therapy board recertification, three truly is a magic number! There are three
main avenues that music therapists can accrue credits toward recertification—
Professional Service, Professional Development, and Continuing Music Therapy
Education (CMTE)—and a multitude of ways within each of these categories to earn
recertification credits! Moreover, many of these credit-earning options are economical,
offering music therapists the opportunity to grow and develop without breaking the
bank in the process.
Professional Service
Let’s consider the first credit-earning
category: professional service. Many
music therapists serve the profession
through their participation in an
organization or by providing clinical
supervision to music therapy students
and interns, yet don’t realize that
these activities can translate into
recertification credits—up to 20 per
recertification cycle! Each hour of
service activity to a professional music
therapy or external organization whose
primary purpose is the advancement
or development of music therapy and/
or quality of life in human services
delivery—on the local, regional,
national, or international level—equals
one recertification credit. Moreover, music
therapists can take advantage of one credit
per music therapy practicum student
supervised (up to five credits per year)
and four credits per music therapy intern
supervised. If you’re serving the profession
through organizational work or clinical
supervision, claim these credits without
spending a dime!

In addition to professional service
activities, music therapists frequently take
part in activities that promote professional
development. Professional development,

category, involves publication and related writing-based
activities, as well as development and implementation
of educational presentations/programs. Publication is
a broad category of professional development, and can
include publication of a monograph or scholarly book (80
credits), book chapter (50 credits), an article in a refereed
(50 credits) or non-refereed (10 credits) journal, book
review in a refereed journal (10 credits). In addition to
these common publication types, music therapists can
claim 80 credits for completing a thesis or dissertation,
and 50 credits for submitting a substantial (i.e., $5,000+;
lesser amount considered if there was substantial work
involved) Federal, State or major foundation grant.
Finally, music therapists can earn up to 20 credits per
recertification cycle for their original music compositions
(5 credits each).
Continuing Music Therapy Education (CMTE)
Credit-earning opportunities based on presentations
and program development are broad as well. Earn 80
credits for developing an AMTA-approved college/
university education program, 50 credits for completing
an AMTA National Roster Internship Program proposal,
and 30 credits for collaborating on the development of
a university-affiliated clinical training program. With
regard to presentations, earn 20 credits for developing
a major (i.e., three+ hours of contact time) workshop
or professional program, beyond what is typical of a

conference presentation. Earn 10 credits for a first-time
offering of a presentation at a professional meeting,
conference, or symposium, including participation in a
poster session or on a panel.
Continuing music therapy education credits (CMTE)
may be the most well-known way to earn credits toward
recertification. For example, many music therapists take
advantage of music therapy conference attendance to
earn five credits (up to 15 credits per recertification cycle)
and attend specialized CMTE courses as a part of their

However, CMTE credits can be earned through a wide
variety of economical learning experiences that relate to
the Board Certification Domains. For example, complete
a written summary report of a refereed journal and enjoy
one credit (a minimum of three articles must be submitted
together for credit during the recertification cycle). Or,
work with a qualified mentor to complete a speciallydesigned course of study based on the Board Certifications
of your choice and earn up to 60 credits per recertification
cycle (no more than 20 credits can be earned in a single
Board Certification area).

credential trademark
policy
The CBMT Board of Directors recently voted to accept
a new Use of Credential Trademark Policy. This policy
outlines how and when a Board-Certified Music Therapist
may use the “MT-BC” credential and “Music Therapist–
Board Certified” designation while currently certified.
Permitted uses of these terms include letterhead, business
cards, websites, social media sites, advertisements,
brochures, other promotional materials, and email
addresses.
The policy also highlights prohibited uses of these
designations which include being used as part of a logo,
on clothing unless it is beside a name, or on resale items.
If an MT-BC were to let their certification expire they
must cease use of all terms, including being used in
personal email addresses. This new policy in its’ entirety is
below and will also be available on the CBMT website at
www.cbmt.org. For further inquiries regarding this policy,

1. Ownership
The “Music Therapist – Board Certified” credential and
“MT-BC” are the sole and exclusive property of CBMT and
are subject to all applicable trademark and other rights of
CBMT as owner under United States intellectual property
law and international conventions. Individuals shall not
use these marks, or any other intellectual property owned
by CBMT, except as expressly authorized in this policy or
otherwise authorized in advance and in writing by CBMT.
2. License
Only certified individuals are permitted to use the “Music
Therapist – Board Certified” credential and “MT-BC”. For
the duration of certification, CBMT will permit a certified
individual to use these marks for the sole purpose of
indicating certification by CBMT. All goodwill associated
with use of these marks inures solely to the benefit of
CBMT.
Use of Credential Trademark Policy

4. Conditions of Use
A. All use of these marks must be appropriate and
dignified as befits the public image of CBMT. All use of
these marks must be accurate and supportive of CBMT
objectives, and must do so in a manner that is compatible
with the mission of CBMT.
B. All use of these marks must be truthful and not
misleading. Specifically, an individual shall not use these
marks:
iv. to state or imply that CBMT is endorsing or
guaranteeing any product or service offered by the
individual.
C. Individuals shall not use these marks (or a word or
design that is confusingly similar to these marks) as part
of the individual’s business name, logo, domain name, or
product or service name.
D. These marks may not be the most prominent visual
elements on the individual’s promotional materials. The
individual’s name, business name and/or logo, and
product or service name should be significantly larger
than the reference to these marks.
E. If certification ends, then the individual shall:
i. cease use of these marks;
i. in any manner that reflects negatively on CBMT or its
activities;
ii. in any manner that conflicts with CBMT policies and
procedures;
ii. return all certificates and other items provided by
CBMT, without retaining copies; and
iii. not distribute any materials containing these marks
that he/she might already have prepared.

F. The individual is responsible for correcting (at his/her
expense) any outdated or otherwise inaccurate use of
these marks.
5. Prohibited Uses
Individuals shall not use the credential or logo on:
A. Clothing, unless it is beside a name;
B. items for resale; or
C. as part of a logo.
6. Quality Control
CBMT has the right to control the quality of all materials
on which these marks are used. CBMT will have access
to the materials which the individual makes publicly
available (such as business cards, letterhead, etc.). Also,
the individual shall submit samples if requested by CBMT.
If CBMT determines that the individual is not meeting
the requirements of this policy, then CBMT will notify the
individual and provide an explanation. CBMT is the final
judge as to whether any use of a mark is consistent with
this policy.
CBMT is committed to protecting its intellectual property
for the benefit of all credential holders and the general
public as consumers. If an individual does not comply
with this policy or otherwise misuses the credential or
other intellectual property of CBMT, then CBMT may
revoke or take other action regarding certification in
accordance with CBMT’s Code of Professional Practice.
If the individual is not certified by CBMT at the time of
the misuse, then CBMT will require corrective action
as a condition of eligibility for certification should the
individual seek certification at a later time. In addition,
CBMT may pursue other remedies that may be legally
available.
