insight into these often underexplored matriarchs.

of Jewish Life, and Shir Kohavi, PhD Candidate in History of Art and Jewish Cultural
Studies, University of Leeds, UK. Curriculum developed by “Girls in Trouble.”

Dear Current and Future Participants,
I am excited to be working for the PJCC as an adult
program coordinator. Formerly a graphic designer, I
returned to school to pursue a career in psychology.
Shortly after my decision, I became a family caregiver
for my elderly father who had developed multiple
health conditions. This experience opened my eyes to
the difficulties that may be associated with growing
older and also made me think about the needs of our
aging population. Consequently, I decided to obtain
a Master’s degree in Gerontology from San Francisco
State University. Since graduating in spring of 2014, I
have worked in various organizations supporting older
adults aging in their communities. My interest areas
include lifelong learning, personal enrichment, and social
engagement, which not only benefit older adults but
people of all ages. I am happy to be part of the PJCC,
an organization that offers a wide range of activities
for everyone. I look forward to supporting the adult
programs at the PJCC and hope to see you soon!
Best wishes,
Koko Kawasaki

• Why Do Jews Achieve So Much?
May 2 • Code: 46034
The Jewish people are an enigma to historians and
social scientists who cannot quite fathom how a small
group of people bound together by a religion can be
so significant to the history of the world. Jews comprise
0.2 percent of the world’s population, and yet, have
won a disproportionate number of Nobel and Pulitzer
prizes, Kennedy Center Honors, and Academy Awards.
Businessman-turned author, Stephen Pease’s new
book The Debate Over Jewish Achievement asks the
question, “Why are the accomplishments of the Jews so
out of proportion to their numbers in the population?”

The Transition Workshop: Making
Your Mid-life Changes Happen
Sunday, April 10 • 1:00 – 5:00 pm
Classroom AB • $10 M/$15 P • Code: 46128
You’re at mid-life and ready for a change — a new
career, a new volunteer opportunity, or a new hobby.
But you’re a little stuck and haven’ taken the actions
to bring the change into being. Change is easier with
a supportive team behind you. In this new workshop
you’ll work with others to identify ways to get around
your stumbling blocks. You’ll practice tools and
techniques like “friend-storming” that lets others help
you move forward. You’ll team up with others to do a
“check-in” to help you keep moving on.
Led by Betty Burr, gerontologist, mid-life coach, and
PJCC staffer.
