Peninsula Jewish Community Center Your Center for Life! Summer 2012 Tammuz / Av / Elul 5772 / / CenterView Stephanie Rosekind and Teyo — What a Team! W hen she’s not visiting the dog“Teyo is Greek, meaning gift from G-d, and believe me, this PJCC indulging her interest in is Mr. Love,” Stephanie says. “I knew I had to share him.” The Jewish education, Center Member Stephanie Rosekind loves volunteering. She’s a volunteer chaplain with the Stanford Hospital Jewish Chaplaincy program and is also on the Peninsula Council of the Jewish Community Relations Council. But ask the San Mateo resident what she finds most endearing, and she might mention her work with the Jewish Coalition for Literacy (JCL), that she learned about through the PJCC. That’s because she gets to partner with her beloved 9-year old Golden Retriever, Teyo. pair has called on Alzheimer’s patients in a residential facility and is currently visiting Fiesta Gardens International School as part of Stephanie’s tutoring efforts with JCL (www.jclread.org ). Studies show that children who are learning to read often fear making mistakes, but they improve when they read to a dog because dogs just listen and don’t laugh if mistakes are made. “The kids love Teyo,” Stephanie says. “We sit in the library and the children practice reading aloud to him. He is remarkably gentle and kind.” A mitzvah mutt, indeed. And the perfect match for a mitzvah kind of gal. Furry Love Abounds at Peninsula Humane Society/SPCA By Laurie Reinelt, PJCC Member Services Associate T he Peninsula Humane Society/ SPCA is a private non-profit organization that accepts all animals in need and strives to find their “forever homes.” A bustling facility, the PHS/ SPCA averages up to 12,000 incoming animals each year, a third of which are injured or orphaned wildlife. Making up the majority are domestic animals, mostly dogs and cats, either surrendered by their guardians or picked up as strays by animal control. Staff evaluate each animal, taking into consideration their age, temperament, behavior, and health, as well as spacing concerns at the shelter. Since January 2003, 100 percent of all healthy dogs and cats in their care have found homes. In addition, each month their dedicated staff nurse and rehabilitate between 150 to 200 treatable animals before finding them homes. The PHS/SPCA has always been a progressive, often-modeled leader. In the 1970s they became the first California Humane Society to introduce an on-site Spay/Neuter Clinic, a wildlife rehabilitation center, and “get acquainted” rooms for the public to interact with shelter animals as part of the adoption process. In the 1980s they began a mobile adoption program that often visits the PJCC. The next time you’re ready to add a four-legged friend to your family, remember the sweet furry faces awaiting their forever home. Visit the PHS/SPCA at their new, state-of-the-art, green facility at 1450 Rollins Road in Burlingame. PHS/SPCA Mobile Adoption will be at the PJCC! Friday, August 24, 2012 • 11:00 am – 2:00 pm Your Most Memorable Pet Mark Sichlinger, Center Member since 2010 “My six-year old standard schnauzer Blaz (pictured right) is my backpacking buddy and even has his own backpack! However, I wasn’t crazy about the time he dove into a freezing lake in the High Sierras at night and I had to share my tent with a wet 40-pound dog in 40-degree temperatures.” Jewish holidays explained Tu B’Av: The Holiday of Love 15 Av, 5772 • August 3, 2012 Tu B’Av is both an ancient and modern holiday. Originally a post-biblical day of joy, it served as a matchmaking day for unmarried women in the second Temple period (before the fall of Jerusalem in 70 C.E.). Tu B’Av was almost unnoticed in the Jewish calendar for many centuries, but it has been rejuvenated in recent decades, especially in the modern state of Israel. In its modern incarnation it is gradually becoming a Hebrew-Jewish Day of Love, slightly resembling Valentine’s Day in English-speaking countries. Reprinted from MyJewishLearning.com Preschool Bids Fond Farewell and Warm Welcome I n 1979, when New Jersey welcome W ith the bittersweet departure of Judy Garb comes the elementary school teacher Judy arrival of Kathleen Seabolt, the PJCC’s new Preschool Garb moved to California, she didn’t know a soul except for her husband and two children. But all that changed when Judy enrolled her young son in the PJCC’s preschool. “I fell in love with the Center,” she recalls. “The PJCC became my home away from home.” In 1985 Judy was hired as a PJCC preschool teacher and the following fall was promoted to Assistant Director. Just a couple years later, she was promoted to Preschool Director, the position she’s held since 1987. “I couldn’t imagine doing any other kind of work,” Judy says. “Once I experienced the PJCC, I was hooked and never left.” After 26 phenomenal years of service, retirement beckons and our beloved educator is making her departure. Under Judy’s leadership, our award-winning preschool has thrived and is recognized today as one of the finest preschools on the Peninsula.” “We extend our most sincere thanks to Judy, who leaves behind an impressive legacy, warm memories and many, many friends,” says PJCC Executive Director Deborah Pinsky. “She will be sorely missed.” Director. “I am confident that our community will embrace Kathleen and all that she is bringing to the PJCC,” Judy says of her successor. “Along with our wonderful office administrators and staff, the PJCC Preschool will continue to flourish.” The seasoned educator boasts an extensive background in early childhood education that includes all levels, from administrative responsibilities to front-end operations. “I can’t express how happy I am to join the Preschool,” Kathleen says. “I look forward to working closely with everyone to ensure a smooth transition. I’m especially excited to meet our parents and children.” She will also partner with the PJCC’s Director of Jewish Life, Rabbi Lavey Derby, to continue integrating Jewish values and learning into the preschool curriculum. Kathleen’s ability to sculpt a superior learning environment while nurturing a caring community makes her a perfect fit with the PJCC. Talmud Circle Studies with Renowned Speaker F or the past seven months, adults from around the Bay, including Jewish scholar of our age. 26 students from the North Peninsula, have met each month to His achievement of translating study Talmud in the Bay Area Talmud Circle sponsored by Lehrhaus Judaica, Kevah, and the Aleph society. In April, 150 enthusiastic guests gathered at the UC Berkeley Hillel House for a special Talmud circle taught by the renowned Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz. Thanks to modern technology, Rabbi Steinsaltz appeared live online and spoke about the reality of evil and the importance of facing the demons that live within us. Rabbi Lavey Derby, teacher of the North Peninsula Talmud circle, said, “Rabbi Steinsaltz is the most renowned Talmudist and 2 the entire Talmud into Hebrew and now English, together with his own commentary and explanatory notes, is unprecedented. It was incredibly moving to be able to study with him.” Woman of the Year: Mara Langer Curator’s Corner PJCC Art Gallery presents Six Dots By guest columnist, Simcha Moyal, Israeli Artist Representative T his exhibition brings together a group of 30 Israeli artists working with a timeless Jewish symbol, the Magen David. The Magen David, meaning Shield of David in Hebrew, is a generally recognized symbol of Jewish identity and Judaism. Its shape is that of a hexagram, the compound of two equilateral triangles. Where there is no absolute account of origin, many different explanations have been offered. Some say that the combination of the interlocking triangles links the earth (triangle pointed down) with the heavens (triangle pointed up). Others say it is the combination of the female and male. Another explanation claims the Magen David was inspired by the lily flower whose six petals create the two triangles. Throughout this exhibition you will see the Magen David represented differently by each artist according to their social, political, and emotional response to it as well as its decorative or ceremonial usage. Sometimes these artists are reflecting on the Jewish people as a whole, sometimes they are referencing the Holocaust, and other times they are using the symbol for their expression of contemporary art. This unique exhibition shows a different angle and approach to the spirituality and physicality associated with the Magen David. “I don’t care how ancient this symbol is, there is no other symbol that is as important to the Jewish people and to the non-Jewish people as Magen David is. And this is an asset.” David Ben-Gurion (1886 – 1973) Prime Minister of Israel. Six Dots is on display in the award-winning PJCC Art Gallery from July 11 – September 27, 2012 A New Voice By Rabbi Lavey Derby, Director of Jewish & Family Life I t’s not something that most people she feeds herself. The reason for this realize, but Jews have always had a is simple, driven by the concern that strong affinity for animals. This might explain the popularity of the Jewish surname “Katz” and all the recent talk about the need to institute a new Jewish lifecycle event, the Bark Mitzvah. In reality, Judaism has always stressed the proper treatment of animals. The Jewish law regarding the treatment of animals is known as tza’ar ba’alei chayim, the prevention of cruelty to animals. The Torah specifically states that animals must rest on the Sabbath just as we do, so no asking Fido to fetch the newspaper on Saturday. It also forbids forcing an animal to work in conditions of undue hardship. My favorite Jewish teaching about animals comes from the Talmud: a person must feed her animals before once you’ve eaten and feel satiated, you may forget about your animals. Jewish tradition holds that a person who is cruel to a defenseless animal is more likely to be cruel to a defenseless human being, while one who learns to care for animals will certainly learn to care for fellow human beings. Now, about that Bark Mitzvah…. Congratulations to PJCC Center Member Mara Langer, who was recently recognized as Woman of the Year! Every year, the California Legislature celebrates well-deserving women as part of Women’s History Month, with each assembly member selecting a woman from their district who has made significant contributions to the community. Assemblyman Jerry Hill (D-San Mateo) recognized Langer, a two-time breast cancer survivor who helps women who have been diagnosed with the disease. The young mother was among 80 Californian women honored during a ceremony on the Assembly floor. Mazel tov, Mara! Wornick Jewish Day School have reached an agreement with Foster City to purchase the land upon which our North Peninsula Jewish Campus stands. This allows us to continue our communitydriven mission for generations to come. While most people know the PJCC as an award-winning fitness center and preschool, or a place to partake in enriching cultural events or send their kids to camp, we are so homeless and facing economic uncertainties, they were ready to cancel their membership. Instead, we offered them a complimentary membership so they could maintain some semblance of normalcy during this time of upheaval. When a grandmother in our community could no longer drive, Get Up & Go took her to doctor appointments, grocery shopping, and to the Center to socialize with friends. And when a Foster City family was seeking a preschool that could help their child with special needs, our preschool was able to help them because your generous donations to our Fund-A-Need campaign raised the funds for a Developmental Consultant. Finally, when the recession forced a family to consider pulling their child from camp, we provided the financial assistance that enabled the child to remain. Yes, we are much more. It’s moments such as these that make me most proud to have served as our PJCC President. Owning the land we occupy ensures we will be a community asset for generations to come. Very soon you will have the opportunity to help. To learn more about our land campaign, please contact Deborah Pinsky at [email protected]. And thank you for allowing me to serve as PJCC President. It has been an honor and a pleasure. Get In the Pink with a Pet S ure, we treasure our pets for their companionship and unconditional love, but did you know that our fur-and-feathered friends also come with health benefits? Read on for just a few of their positive effects. Chill Out with a Chihuahua Under stress, harmful chemicals like cortisol and norepinephrine can affect the immune system and cause plaque buildup in arteries, the red flag for heart disease. Engaging in a pleasurable activity, like petting a cat or dog, can elevate levels of the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine, known for their calming properties. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), having a pet can also lower blood pressure, especially in hypertensive or high-risk patients. Foster Healthy Immune Systems with Feathers and Fur The old school of thought was that if you were prone to allergies, pets should be avoided. However, a growing number of studies are indicating that babies with greater exposure to fur and allergens may actually develop stronger immune systems. Bypass the Pills and Pet a Pooch Pets may be the best medicine for people dealing with chronic pain such as arthritis or migraines. One study from Loyola University found that patients who used pet therapy while recovering from surgery needed significantly less pain medication than their pet-less peers. Nurse Your Mind with a Feline Pet guardianship can result in mental and emotional benefits, which is why pets are used in various forms of therapy. Scientists have discovered that even just stroking a cat or petting a dog releases a surge of healing hormones and chemicals that produce feelings of peace and serenity. Monitor Blood Sugar with a Bow-Wow Dogs have the ability to detect a subtle odor that occurs when declining blood sugar changes body chemistry. Organizations like Dogs4Diabetics train dogs to be companions for patients at risk of unstable blood glucose levels. Need a little human help getting started on the road to wellness? Community Mural in PJCC Art Gallery Don’t miss this colorful community mural, developed by Israeli artist Neta Levi at the recent Yom Ha’Atzmaut celebration. Using separate canvases, Levi sketched the outlines of the mural for dozens of enthusiastic children and adults to paint. She then compiled the canvases to create the stunning 5’x 4’ mural on display in our lobby. 6 Your Most Memorable Pet Greyhound ex-racer, Olivia, who owns Eileen Mitchell, PJCC Marketing Communications Manager Darcie Gripp, Center Member since 2004 When I was a young kid growing up in Oregon, I had a longhair tabby named Butterscotch, BS for short. During cold winter nights, BS would curl up under my covers and help warm me and my cold feet. He was like my very own personal heater. Julia Meng with daughter Sofia, 3 Center Guests Well, we haven’t had too much luck with our pet goldfish, lately. We’ve had at least five, but they keep dying because the girls enjoy feeding them too much. For now, I think we’re giving up. Sandra Charles, Center Member since 2008 When we lived in New York, we adopted a German Shepherd/Collie mix named Ezza from the ASPCA. One day I was in the shower when Ezza started barking and wouldn’t stop. I came out to quiet her and found the TV, which had been left on, in flames! Ezza saved my life. Seth Hazen, PJCC Aquatics Manager That would be our current dog, Jax. When we adopted him at five months he already weighed a hefty 50 pounds, but we weren’t expecting him to triple in size! Since he’s a Mastador (Mastiff/Lab mix), I guess we shouldn’t have been surprised.
