I’m proud to be addressing you as the newly elected President of the Solana Beach Chamber of Commerce. I
bought my first piece of property here in 1970. It was a quaint, quiet little berg in 1970 and still is, with less than
14,000 residences…and more charming than ever. After becoming a city in 1986, (we just had our 20th
anniversary), the people of the town finally had some control over its destiny! Since that time, the community
put a plan together that has been diligently put into place.
We have unique shopping areas, especially the Cedros Design District…a stylish Train Station (that you can get
on the Coaster Commuter or go anywhere with Amtrak)…a wonderful new Beach Park opening June of 2007…a
revamping of our 101 corridor, giving it a Village Flair (also happening in 2007)…A great Coastal Rail Trail that
allows you to get your exercise comfortably along 101…we even have 2 golf courses (one public, one private)
and tennis clubs…you get to enjoy all of this with the best weather in the world!
Our city has a majority of local businesses...We aren’t a carbon copy of other cities…and refuse to be! Most of
our restaurants and shopping is within walking distance. We have small town living with a contemporary flair!
The Solana Beach Chamber of Commerce, which will have its 60th anniversary of incorporation in 2008, tries to
do its part by working with our businesses and city officials to bring all of our cities dreams to reality. Our new
Board of Directors and Manager have a lot of talent and good ideas to improve our services to the business
community and its citizens.
We are proud of our office staff. They go out of their way to help you, whether you are a new visitor to our town
or a business member of the community.
We love managing the Visitor’s Center because it gives us a chance to show off Solana Beach and all it has to
offer.
We also manage the Farmer’s Market every Sunday. It is the place to be…organic foods and lots of other
venders round out the experience.
The Chamber has monthly “Business After 5” gatherings in which members can network with other members.
We have community leaders give us information on future projects in the area or interesting facts on issues that
might affect them…in general, keeping our members informed.
For 28 years, the Chamber has put on The Fiesta Del Sol the first weekend of June. It has great bands, a craft fair,
food, fun and games…and more. More than 50,000 people come to enjoy the atmosphere and celebrate Solana
Beach.
Our calendar is full of events throughout the year…such as Golf tournaments, Car Shows, Music in the Park (Our
new one), a Kid’s Rail Trail Run (we might even have one for the adults), and Legislative Events.

Just 30 minutes from downtown San Diego, nestled along the northern coast of San Diego, the historic seaside
community of Solana Beach offers a charming repose for residents and visitors alike. With miles of pristine
beaches, top quality shopping and a healthy business climate, visitors come in droves to see what residents
already know.
Residents and visitors alike will enjoy the year round sun, under which they can find endless recreation,
entertainment and culture. Furthermore, Solana Beach’s quality public services are in place all year, including
quality healthcare, progressive schools, and modern housing.
Solana Beach combines the best of relaxation in the sun with an industrious attitude, making it the perfect place
in which to work, play and raise a family.
Solana Beach has had in its time a long and storied history, marked by frequent changes in inhabitants as well as
name. Originally, the San Dieguitos migrated to the area in 9000 B.C., followed by the San Jollans and
subsequently the Kumeyaay.
The Spanish, led by Don Gaspar de Portola, arrived in 1769, and set about missionizing the inhabitants, setting
up a colony. For some time, control of the area was wrested between the Spanish, Mexico, and subsequently the
United States.
Solana Beach began its main development around 1917, with the building of the Lake Hodges Dam, which
eventually brought irrigation and made it a valuable farming community. Development dwindled during the
depression, but picked up again after World War II, and a real estate boom surged through the end of the century.
Today, Solana Beach retains much of its diverse heritage, and is noted as a quiet, reserved community with an
exceptional array of recreation and small town charm, making it a desirable place to in which to live, as well as
visit.
Solana Beach, located in beautiful San Diego County, enjoys an ideal position that is near a wealth of attractions,
yet withdrawn from the everyday bustle. Just 30 minutes from downtown San Diego, Solana Beach can be
reached via a variety of modes of transportation.
Solana Beach is accessed easily from Interstate 5, Highway 101, Lomas Santa Fe Drive and Via de la Valle, and
San Diego International Airport is 21 miles to the south along I-5, offering 18 passenger carriers serving
destinations worldwide.
There is an established network of public transportation, including the North County Transit District, which
extends bus service, as does the Metropolitan Transit System. For train service to regional destinations, Amtrak
stops at the station at 105 N. Cedros Ave.
The sunny shores of Solana Beach offer endless opportunities for recreation, from outdoor fun, historical sites to
artistic and cultural attractions.
Fletcher Cove, one of Solana Beach’s most popular attractions, offers sun-filled fun along its mile-long shore.
Additionally, Fletcher Cove has been home to surfing competitions, triathlons, and is the site of the annual Last
Blast, a weekend affair that features music, games, food and fun, all in celebration of the community spirit.
Solana Beach also maintains a number of parks, including San Dieguito Park, San Elijo Lagoon and Nature
Reserve, and San Dieguito River Regional Park.
Solana Beach celebrates its multicultural heritage in many artistic forms. The North Coast Repertory Theatre
stages an award-winning Mainstage season, performing a wide range of works, and giving residents a chance to
enjoy as well as participate in quality theatre.
Solana Beach is graced with an outstanding quality of life, ensuring its residents enjoy the best in public services,
quaint neighborhoods, convenient services and safety. All of its over 6,300 homes share the same proximity to
the ocean, mountains and greenbelts, making it a unique and picturesque place in which to reside.
The majority of Solana Beach’s housing development was completed in the 1960s and 1970s, and consist of
primarily detached single family homes located west of Interstate 5. Today, many of these homes are being
remodeled to take advantage of their expansive lot sizes.
While family homes predominate, there are still opportunities for permanent and seasonal renters, as well as a
few townhomes and senior living facilities.
Education is of utmost importance to residents of Solana Beach, and as such, area schools offer a comprehensive
educational system.
The Solana Beach School District understands the diverse backgrounds of its students, and has a curriculum that
endows each student with the most fundamental aspects of learning, as well as a solid foundation for continued
education.
The Solana Beach School District is comprised of six elementary schools (Solana Vista, Skyline, Solana Santa
Fe, Solana Pacific, Carmel Creek and Solana Highlands), Earl Warren Middle School, and the San Dieguito
Union High School District is made up of Torrey Pines, San Dieguito Academy and Canyon Crest Academy.
There are also a number of private, parochial and Montessori schools that offer an alternative to public
education. Furthermore, several institutions of higher learning build upon the success of Solana Beach’s
public school system.
Solana Beach is a vibrant marketplace that harkens back to the days of yore, when unique, handcrafted goods
were available in one central location. There are also many all purpose shopping centers that cater to the needs of
residents, bringing a wide range of goods together in one convenient locale.
Shopping centers in Solana Beach include: Windward Plaza Shopping Center, Beach Walk Shopping Center,
Lomas Santa Fe Plaza Shopping Center, Boardwalk Solana Beach Shopping Center, Mercado del Sol Shopping
Center, Solana Beach Town Center Shopping Center, and Downtown Plaza Shopping Center.
In addition to the many shopping centers located in and around Solana Beach, the main attraction is the
Cedros Design District. The District is a welcome respite from the proliferation of expansive malls,
offering more than 85 shops selling unique, one-of-a-kind items, from fine art, home furnishing, apparel,
and anything else imaginable. In such stark contrast to the average shopping malls, the Cedros Design
District is an ultra modern and hip destination for shoppers, art enthusiasts and general fans of culture.
Solana Beach is an industrious community with a diverse breadth of services, ranging from retail businesses and
light industry, to commercial and professional businesses. Most workers are proprietors, management or in sales
or professional positions, and benefit from the area’s enthusiastic workforce.
Businesses locate in Solana Beach for many reasons. A strong transportation network, business-minded local
government, and many incentives for businesses make it an ideal place to run a business.
The Solana Beach Chamber of Commerce is an important advocate of businesses, and works with residents,
businesses and local government to build a stronger future, both economically and in quality of life.
Solana Beach’s top employers include Belly Up Tavern, Solana Beach School District and the San Dieguito
School District.
Solana Beach is a community that is committed to giving back just as much as it takes. As such, there are many
non-profit and community organizations that work to improve the community in a variety of ways, from
beautification to education, to charity to volunteerism.
The Solana Center for Environmental Innovation is just one group that aims to create a better environment
through a multifaceted approach of innovation, leadership, education and participation. The Solana Center
focuses on national and regional issues, including pollution, sustainable living and recycling.
Solana Beach residents are fortunate to be served by a number of nearby healthcare facilities, from full-service
hospitals to family practitioners and specialists.
Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla is an established trauma center, offering a range of services, including 24hour emergency services, intensive care, radiation oncology, neurology, mental, and more. With 293 beds and
over 2,200 employees, La Jolla has a Cardiac Treatment Center, Imaging Center, The Whittier Institute for
Diabetes, and Scripps Polster Breast Care Center.
Solana Beach is a General Law City overseen by a Council/Manager form of government. The City Council,
which is made up of five Council members, one of whom is the acting Mayor, is responsible for legislative
affairs, and whose goal it is to ensure fiscal responsibility and maintain a high quality of life and community
character.
Residents are also served by many community-minded services, including community development, art and
recreation, and public safety, under whose auspices are law enforcement and the fire department.
Solana Beach, as a town with a rich cultural heritage, brings together many faiths which, through a mutual
commitment to the community, strengthen the global faith through their individual efforts.
Furthermore, a number of non-profit organizations in the area work toward charitable goals, fostering
togetherness throughout the entire community.
