Callanwolde introduces
Music Recording
Program
C
allanwolde Fine Arts Center is thrilled to announce our newest Program:
The Callanwolde Music Recording Program. We are honored that this program
is under the direction of Callanwolde’s Director of Recording Phil Tan, a three-time
Grammy Award-winning sound engineer, who has generously donated his time and
resources to help create this exciting program.
I M A G I N A T I O N
Music Recording Program
Introduction to Avid Pro Tools
new!
Learn how to use Pro Tools, the industry standard
for Digital Audio Workstations. This class will
cover basic principles, giving you the foundation
to create complete projects, from initial setup to
mixdown.
Topics include: Creating sessions, file
management, navigation, audio and MIDI
recording, basic editing techniques, introduction
to mixing, plug-in effects, and software
instruments.
Prerequisites: Basic computer knowledge
including the ability to use input devices
(keyboard and mouse)
Atlanta is one of the top ten music recording cities in the nation, yet there has been a lack
of music and recording educational programs and studios – until now. Callanwolde’s
Music Recording Program is a curriculum of classes designed by Phil Tan to provide lowcost training that will be a great start to those interested in learning the art of recording.
The Phil Tan curriculum includes Introduction to Music Technology, a three-part course.
Upon completion of all three parts with a passing grade, students will earn the Phil
Tan Music Recording Certificate which can be an aid for students to gain acceptance
into college music recording programs and in some cases, earn college credit or get
professional studio internships.
Discover Logic Pro, Apple’s powerful and versatile
music production system. You will be introduced
to Logic’s primary windows and features, and
learn how to manage a song, from the first note to
the final bounce.
This is a great opportunity for people of all ages – including teens – who are interested in
learning about recording and mixing and possibly aspire to work in the music business.
Currently housed our music building and in the future, some classes with Phil being in
our soon-to-be renovated Barn, we have workstations for up eight students in each class,
affording everyone personal attention from our expert faculty
Prerequisites: Basic computer knowledge
including the ability to use input devices
(keyboard and mouse).
Phil Tan
Phil Tan, soft-spoken and
the measure of calm, is one
of the most respected and
highly-awarded professionals
in his field. Phil began his
career at the age of 18, when,
with little music experience
(just some childhood piano
lessons), he decided to focus
on music post-high school.
He was accepted to the
prestigious Berklee School of
Music in Boston, MA but he
could not afford it. Instead,
he chose Full Sail University in Florida and upon graduation, landed an internship here
in Atlanta, which eventually led him to recording and mixing work with JD (Jermaine
Dupri), a friendship and close working relationship that continues to this day. Phil
Tan is a 3-time Grammy award recipient whose credits include bestsellers by Rihanna,
Mariah Carey, Ne-Yo, Ludacris, Usher, Katy Perry, Janelle Monae and more.
Phil’s work over the past 23 plus years accounts for over 300 million albums and singles
sold here in the United States with an economic impact of well over a billion dollars.
We are excited and honored to have Phil Tan join the Callanwolde team to bring this
new program to Metro Atlanta.

Welcome to our unit of Fiddle-Dee-Dee where
we celebrate the unique joys of the growing
child. Our animal theme ties nicely with the
musical themes of folk and mountain music.
Animal sounds, so appealing to children, naturally
prompt imitation and vocal development.
Imagine us moving like these animals too as we
focus on concepts of high, low, smooth, bumpy,
fast and slow. Encourage your child to be creative,
to initiate their own ideas and to respond in their
own ways. As they play instruments, sing, dance,
move and explore, they’ll uncover an engaging
musical world while building self-confidence, selfcontrol and communication skills. Home materials

Writing Rainbow for Homeschoolers (Grades 3-5)
This creative writing course is designed to both
hone and develop your child’s writing skills as
well as to get your child excited about writing
and expressing him/herself in words. Your child
will receive an introduction to the elements of
narrative fiction. Using the Writing Rainbow
approach (developed by the instructor), we will
discover what makes stories interesting, what
keeps us reading, how to craft a story with a clear
beginning, middle, and end, how to develop
characters, use descriptive language, create a
rich, believable world, and much more. We will
examine a variety of literature and read excerpts
from both classic and contemporary sources. Our
5 senses will be used to explore the narrative
world and we will incorporate graphic organizers
and a variety of visual arts ranging from collage
and photography to drawing as part of our
lessons. Students will learn how to move through
the writing process from drafting, revising, and
editing to publishing. Supply list online. Min. 4/

Encaustic Painting by Penny Treese
new!
Working from the nude model, this class will
explore how to build a painting over a succession
of one day. The class will have one 6-hr pose
that will enable students the time to push their
paintings from the beginning under the careful
guidance of accomplished artist, Jason Espey,
a Studio Incamminati alum and former Studio
Fellow. Starting with learning how to do an
underpainting, students will work through the
foundational, energetic gesture of the pose,
block in the shapes of the main masses, separate
the light from the shadow (chiaroscuro), and
eventually gain a three-dimensional likeness of
the model. Model fee included. Supply list online;
bring a sack lunch. Min. 6, max. 12.

Special Painting Workshop with Modern Master:
Vincent Desiderio
Working with a live model, this class with Vincent Desiderio is a
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for those in the Atlanta region.
Special Painting Workshop with Modern Master
Vincent Desiderio new!
“Great painting evokes a sense of the perpetual
present tense of being. It remains open ended,
thus facilitating the flow of artistic thought that
is always and everywhere streaming through
the history of painting. Yet, painting’s greatest
strength lies in its stasis, its capacity to produce
the coup d’oeil, that momentarily freezes this
motion and, in a glance, reveals a complex
projection of visual thought. From the start, I
recognize that the real idea of the picture resides
in the way materials are coaxed into meaning.” –
Vincent Desiderio, 2014
Working from the nude model, this class
with Vincent Desiderio is a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity for those of us in the Atlanta region.
Desiderio graduated from Haverford College and
the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where
he is currently a Senior Critic. He is also a Senior
Critic at the New York Academy of Art and has
been a visiting professor at numerous universities
both here and abroad, most recently at the
Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts in China. He lives
and works in New York. Desiderio has received
several grants and painting awards among which
are the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant; Two
National Endowment for the Arts Grants, and the
Grand Prize of S.A.S. Prince Ranier III, Thirtieth
Annual Show of Contemporary Art in MonteCarlo, Monaco in 1996. He was the first American
to receive that award. Numerous articles about
Vincent Desiderio have appeared in periodicals
and magazines including the New York Times,
Art Forum, Art in America and Art News. In Arts
& Letters, Maureen Mullarkey said, “Vincent
Desiderio brings to the painting of the human
figure a grace of hand, and rarer still, a grace of
mind. Steeped in suggestion, his works are moral
allegories. Realistically painted, his subjects assert
the primacy of life over the painter’s world of
forms.”
His work can be found in many important public
collections, including the Metropolitan Museum
of Art and the Guggenheim Museum, both in
New York; the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington,
DC, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; The
Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Galerie
Sammlung Ludwig, Aachen, Germany, and The
Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. He is represented
by Marlborough Gallery, Manhattan.

Pottery Workshop
Your Work as a Gift with Tony Clennell
This special workshop will focus on larger-thanlife utilitarian pottery for occasional use; large
pitchers, casseroles, baskets, bowls, platters
and teapots. Over the years, visiting potter Tony
Clennell has specialized in sectional or composite
throwing where many pieces come together to
make one vessel. The maker’s marks and details
of process are what he is interested in leaving in
the finished work, and he is a handle fanatic! He
makes handles and attachments for all the vessels
including the bowls and plates. The attention to
details, additions and marks of process are the
gifts that we give to our work.
Tony Clennell is an Ontario, Canada studio potter
who has taught workshops in Canada, USA, Japan,
China, and Italy. He has published over 55 articles
for ceramic journals, and recently published
“Stuck in the Mud”, a book of irreverent tales
and nonsense about his life in clay. He is also an
adjunct professor at Sheridan College. He might
be bringing a surprise guest. Min. 15, max. 30

“My work merges a long career in graphic design with my first love - collage and assemblage.
The content comes from boxes of old family letters and photographs and reveals ideal
childhood memories viewed through the lens of aged and decayed materials. By using
found objects and papers, old photos and phrases from the letters, I touch on the layers of
complicated family relationships and how indirect our communication can be. Hoping to
discover some family history,
I was struck by how little the letters said and was left to wonder what unspoken
understandings lay beneath the superficial weather reports and promises to write. The
resulting work is a family album of sorts that seems both personal and universal, almost
revealing things held in secret.”
