In addition to visiting their classrooms and meeting classmates, they took their first ride on a school bus! Pictured above with two “first time riders” is Elementary School Assistant Principal Ms. Hine. Summer Reading This past summer students at Mt. Sinai Elementary School once again participated in a summer reading program sponsored by the school library. This was done in conjunction with the public libraries in our area, Port Jefferson and Comsewogue. This fall students were rewarded with a certificate for their participation AND a new book of their choice! Over 100 students joined in the gathering and a great time was had by all! A big thank you to our PTO who provided the new books and to the PTO parents who graciously helped out at the event. Keep reading Mt. Sinai students! On July 18th the Mount Sinai Elementary School celebrated its second annual bobwhite quail release at Brookhaven State Park. Bobwhite quail, so named for their telltale bob-white springtime call, were once common on Long Island. The students learned bobwhite have experienced a dramatic decline in their population due to habitat loss, and pet and feral cat predation. Coinciding with the demise of the bobwhite has been an alarming increase in the tick population. The bobwhite, primarily a ground dwelling bird, just happens to be a voracious predator of ticks and other nuisance insects. Our school’s effort along with many other Long Island schools is an attempt to restore ecosystem balance and reduce the risk of tick borne disease. The students got to witness the bobwhite life cycle firsthand including incubating the eggs, brooding and caring for the chicks in our indoor habitat, acclimating the birds to the outdoors in our courtyard coop, and finally releasing the fully grown adult birds. It was quite a thrill to all those in attendance to witness the quail blend seamlessly into the Brookhaven State Park woodlands. We look forward to starting the process all over again in April 2016! The Friends of the Arts sponsored a Pumpkin Decorating Contest for all Kindergarten students. Two winners from each category were selected…scariest and most creative. Box Top Winners M t. Sinai Elementary Schools students help raise money for the PTO by bringing in Box Tops for Education. These labels are found on a number of General Mills products from cereal to soups and it is almost like a scavenger hunt in the home and pantry for students to find and cut them off the packaging. The students who bring in the most each month, pictured with Dr. Gentilcore, earned "PTO Bucks" to spend at the School Store. The top winner, Anna Rossman, earned a gift card to The Children's Place. Mount Sinai Mirror 3 MOUNT SINAI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL UNITY DAY Unity Day 2015 was celebrated at Mt. Sinai Elementary School in a very "Orangey" way. October 21st is a nationwide day for showing kindness, being inclusive, and stopping bullying in school. The official color of the initiative is Orange and staff and students wore orange shirts as a sign of support. Besides the group picture out on the soccer field as seen above, teachers read stories with similar themes in their classrooms and all the teachers and student hung hands in the hallway to show a "connectedness" or unified effort in stopping bullying in the school. Support Our Troops! Elementary students show their support for our U.S. Troops by collecting non-perishable items during Spirit Week. Altogether they filled collection bins four times! Way to go ES students! Pictured above are: Matteo DelPoeta, Brock Kolsch, Brooke Napolitano and Madison Cucciniello from Mrs. D. Murphy’s 3rd grade class. The students had an opportunity to observe, investigate, and compare trees and their parts. Classroom lesson come to life. Constitution Day he students at the Mount Sinai Middle School learned what is means to be “Unafraid” in the face of a bully. Dr Jay Banks performed at our 2015-2016 school year opening Character Education assembly on September 29, 2015. He taught students in all grade levels several simple strategies such as Avoid Bullies, Find a Friend, Report Bullying, and Act Confident. His utilized humor and movement to get the students to pay attention and learn about his message. Thanks to the PTO for providing this as a gift to the Elementary School. Fire Prevention ”Pictured are Samuel Covington and Gianna Candurra from Mrs. Christiano’s class.” C onstitution Day, also known as Citizenship Day, was deemed by the United States government as a national day to recognize and honor the signing of the United States Constitution by our founding fathers at the Constitutional Convention on September 17, 1787. Every year, teachers instruct students on the importance of the document and what it means to live in a land governed by guaranteed freedoms and rules of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. This year, students at the Elementary School had a similar experience in pledging to uphold the ideals of good “studentship” and character by signing an oversized document hanging on the wall in the school that contained a Preamble that began with those three famous words…”We the people.” Fire Fighters from the Mt. Sinai Fire Department visited the Elementary School on October 15, 2015 to discuss fire safety and prevention with students in Kindergarten and first and second grade. October is known as Fire Prevention Month and students learned safety rules such as testing your smoke detector regularly, “stop, drop, and roll” and making a meeting point outside the house. Kindergarten student were able to tour a fire truck and pretended to shoot a water hose, after which they received plastic fire fighter hats. Mount Sinai Mirror 5 MOUNT SINAI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Junior Achievement S Wolfie Certificate tudent who were Caught Being Good at the Elementary School during the month of September received special recognition from “Wolfie,” the Stony Brook University mascot. In addition to having their picture taken with Dr. Gentilcore and having their names read over the building P.A. they are eligible to get a free ticket to a Sea Wolves football game in October. Students caught being good in October will be eligible for a free ticket to a November football game at Stony Brook University. This community outreach initiative from a local university is greatly appreciated by the fourth grade students pictured here: Elementary Tuba Day Participants Pictured Caden Smith, Jack Kelly and Jake Furrer with Dr. Gentilcore and Mr. Moriarity, ES Music Teacher. First grade students will meet again this year with High School students in Ms. Soden’s Parenting Class to learn about communities and citizenship. O ver 200 students were in attendance at this year’s grade 5 and 6 Halloween Social, held immediately after school on Friday, October 30. Students danced the afternoon away in the “spooktacularly” decorated middle school cafeteria. A truly fantastic time was had by all! The next 5th and 6th grade Social is scheduled from 2:35 – 4:45 P.M. on Friday, February 5. This social will coincide with Student Council’s Soup-er Bowl Drive as preparation for the big game on February 7th. The cafeteria will be decked out in grid iron decorations. We hope to see you there. 7th & 8th Grade Halloween Ball he 5th Annual 7th and 8th grade Halloween Ball was held on Friday, October 30 in the middle school cafeteria. With over 100 students in attendance, the dance floor was rocking all night long. Prizes were given to students with the most creepy, accurate, comical, and overall-best costumes. As an addition to this year’s dance, another prize for best group costume was awarded. Chaperones certainly found it difficult to make their selections for the “best” awards because the costumes this year were top notch. Giggles were abundant and toilet paper was flying as teams of students competed in a Mummy-Wrap contest. Each team wrapped one gallant and good-natured team member into the most stylish mummy they could create. Chaperones found it hard to keep a straight face as they assessed the runway-ready mummies. A wonderful time was had by all! The next 7th & 8th grade ball will be on February 5. It will be a Football themed dance, just in time for the big game on February 7th. T Mount Sinai Mirror 8 MOUNT SINAI MIDDLE SCHOOL Homecoming Parade 2015: Disney Style! On Saturday, October 24, members of the Mount Sinai Middle School Student Council marched to represent the middle school in this year’s Homecoming Day Parade. This year’s Disney Movie theme was depicted in the form of Disney’s famous landmark: Cinderella’s Castle! The castle, along with the Disney princesses, stood at the center of the middle school float, surrounded by images from Disney movies such as Finding Nemo, Frozen, Dumbo, The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Cars, and Monsters, Inc. The images and castle “turrets” were painted and constructed by members of Student Council the week prior to Homecoming Day. A very special “Thank you” goes out to all those who contributed their time in helping to make the middle school’s float and participation in the parade a success, including Mr. Doyle, Mr. Hagenburg, Ms. Hild, Ms. Lang, Ms. Pomaro, Middle Island Equipment, Wayne Rampone, and Ramp Ford of Port Jefferson Station. Thank you all for your help!! Student Council Officers Audrey Bilello, Steven Wilcken, Connor Wilcken, and Macrae Taylor. Mount Sinai Mirror 9 MOUNT SINAI MIDDLE SCHOOL Speak Life T hanks to funding by the PTO, the sixth, seventh and eighth graders had the opportunity to watch The Speak Life Event by All Access Productions which is an anti-bullying play. The play is based on true stories. The group travels with 21 actors who perform at schools across the nation. The storyline is a school day that portrays students’ interactions and various levels of bullying. The message was “speak life”, in other words don’t be a bystander, be an up stander and intervene when a person is being bullied or to reach out to teachers and parents if they are being or witness someone being bullied. Students commented that the production was enlightening and thought provoking. The Courtyard Club The Courtyard Club in the Middle School has over twenty-five members this year! During the past spring, members built and painted a planter box. They were able to successfully grow corn, sunflowers and pumpkins. Students have been busy this year harvesting seeds from the spring planting. The seeds will be replanted next spring, repeating the process. Students diligently worked cleaning the planter, preparing it for the spring. The club planted mums and made a scarecrow giving the courtyard a fall-like appearance and in preparation for the spring, each student planted some tulip and daffodil bulbs. The Courtyard Clubs dedication and hard work makes it a beautiful area for all to enjoy year round. Dyroff Assistant Principal Mr. Robert Grable Principal 2015 International Anthem Essay Competition Mr. Frank LaBianca Assistant Principal National Merit Scholarship Corporation N eed to make your case in writing? Wonder where to find highly skilled writers? Look no further than Mount Sinai High School’s writing program, where three students in Ms. Thalen’s English classes spent weeks and months honing their writing skills. Their hard work was recognized this past July when they were notified by the Ayn Rand Institute that their entries had been chosen as semi-finalists (Ethan Ludecker and Anthony Abazis) and a finalist (Amanda DiDonato) in the 2015 International Anthem essay contest. All three submissions clearly and thoroughly addressed the task, and were judged as exemplary models of student writing by the Institute’s judging panel. Amanda’s distinction as a finalist sets her in a very elite group. Each year, Ms. Thalen has her students write essays that analyze Anthem and its themes, based on the question(s) posed for the Institute’s International Essay Competition. Students develop these essays in class and continue working on them at home. Once they have gone through all aspects of the writing process (generating ideas, developing a draft, revising, editing and proofreading), these essays are formatted following the guidelines set forth in the contest rules. Since entries are received from throughout the United States, Europe and Australia (a record of over 17,000 entries in this year’s contest) earning any recognition sets these writers apart from their peers. All three students earned cash prizes and the opportunity to list their rare honor on their college applications. Through their diligence, Amanda, Ethan and Anthony have produced writing that is both persuasive and insightful, and which demonstrates their ability to compete in an Semifinalists Mr. Grable, Patrick Hanaj, Alexander Mule, Su Yang, Cassandra Arnemann and Mr. Dyroff. (National Merit Scholarship Continued on pg. 14) Mount Sinai Mirror 12 MOUNT SINAI HIGH SCHOOL (National Merit Scholarship Continued fm. pg. 13) C ongratulations to Cassandra Arnemann, Patrick Hanaj, Alexander Mule and Su Yang who have been named Semifinalists in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program and to Alec Donowitz, Ryan Hecht, Corinne Cianciulli and Justine Quan who have been recognized as Commended Students. As Semifinalists, our students have an opportunity to continue in the Merit Scholarship® competition and advance to Finalist standing by meeting a number of additional requirements. Commended Students are recognized for the exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the qualifying test used for program entry. Commended Students, however, will not continue in the competition to be offered next spring. Over 1.5 million students took the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT®) last October and entered the National Merit Scholarship Program, a nationwide competition for recognition and awards conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Congratulations and good luck to our students. Celebrate My Drive 2015 Celebrate My Drive encourages teens to make positive choices behind the wheel, like Drive 2N2® (2 eyes on the road, 2 hands on the wheel). The Celebrate My Drive campaign challenges high schools to explain how they will address teen driver safety issues at their school or in their communities. On Friday, October 23, State Farm Insurance, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department and the State Troopers hosted the Celebrate My Drive event at Mount Sinai High School. Students had the opportunity to drive go-carts wearing goggles that simulated the effects of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Likewise, students were required to drive the go-carts while texting a specific message into their cell phones. Subsequently, as students tried to maneuver their gocarts through a track outlined by cones under these simulated conditions, they quickly realized that their vision and attention to the roadway was greatly compromised. Lastly, students were able to board the Sheriff’s DWI Mobile Command Center and Course with deputies to understand the processes and consequences that accompany being arrested for DWI. Students seemed to enjoy participating in the activities and were provided with opportunities to understand what it feels like to drive while distracted and under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Hopefully, this experience, coupled with ongoing reminders, will help our students make future decisions that will preserve their health and well-being. Mount Sinai Mirror 13 MOUNT SINAI HIGH SCHOOL Students Visit 9/11 Memorial/Museum National Honor Society Fall Induction O n Tuesday, October 27, students enrolled in Mount Sinai High School’s Advanced Placement United States History course visited the 9/11 Memorial Museum in Manhattan. Included in this trip was a two-hour long workshop entitled “Events of the Day.” An archival historian at the museum led this workshop. Students were presented with actual artifacts, video and audio record- On Thursday, October 29, nine senior students were inducted into the Mount Sinai High School Chapter of the National Honor Society. The four pillars of the National Honor Society are Character, Service, Leadership and Scholarship. To qualify for induction, students must have earned a 91.5 weighted grade point average, performed fifty hours of community service and be interviewed by a five member faculty council. All members of the National Honor Society continue their service to the community by participating in weekly Peer Tutoring services, which are offered free of charge to any middle or high school student in need of assistance with their studies. Congratulations to the following new inductees: INTERACT Club The Mount Sinai High School Interact Club meets every other Monday after school in the cafeteria. The purpose of this club is to provide community service and volunteer efforts to the local and international communities. Over the past few years, the club has donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. Additionally, club members organized coat drives and backpack donations, and, in the spring, participated in Stuff-A-Bus. Interact Club is currently participating in Trick or Treat for UNICEF to aid children around the world. Donations will be used to provide vaccinations, medical assistance and school supplies to less fortunate children across the globe. If you would like to make a donation, please contact Ms. Falco in the Guidance Office/Counseling Center. Members of the Interact Club look forward to another successful year of community service and volunteerism. If any student is interested in joining this wonderful organization, please join us at the next meeting every other Monday after school in the cafeteria. This evening was a follow-up to the introductory college workshop held in the spring of students’ junior year. Parents and students received detailed information regarding the application process; including such topics as required forms, college fairs, financial aid, various website resources, SAT and ACT exam dates, and letters of recommendation. Counselors explained the next phase in our use of Naviance, which will be submitting applications and related paperwork electronically through “EDOCS” for the appropriate colleges/universities. As a follow up, we encourage our senior students and their parents to continue to use Naviance as a resource and to be cognizant of college application deadlines. Should you have any questions or require assistance with the college application process, please feel free to contact your child’s guidance counselor. Mount Sinai Mirror 14 MOUNT SINAI HIGH SCHOOL Junior Achievement Students in Mount Sinai High School’s Parenting class are participating in the Junior Achievement High School Heroes Program. Junior Achievement USA® is the nation’s largest organization dedicated to educating students in grades K-12 about entrepreneurship, work readiness, and financial literacy. This is accomplished through experiential, hands-on programs designed to help young people understand the economics of life. In collaboration with the Elementary School, our students teach students in first grade about “Our Families.” This curriculum explores the interdependent roles of how family members’ jobs and businesses contribute to the well-being of the family. After extensive classroom training and preparation, our students spend five sessions in the Elementary School teaching the first grade students by using interactive activities that allow them to actively engage the students. This is a dynamic experience for both the elementary and high school students as both have the opportunity to learn valuable skills from one another. O Math Team n Monday, October 26, the Mount Sinai High School Math Team competed in the first math meet for the 2015 – 2016 school year. Led by perfect scores (6 out of 6) by Patrick Hanaj and Spero Calamas and 5 out of 6 by Ryan Hecht and Andrew Rodriguez, the team took the early lead in our division. There were thirty participants attending the meet at Rocky Point and an additional thirty-five that stayed after school later in the week to participate in a mock meet. The next meet is scheduled for mid-November. On Tuesday, October 27, the Grade 9 team also had their first meet of the year. They won their meet and are off to a great start. Video Game Tournament The National Honor Society continued and expanded upon the success of its Inaugural Video Game Tournament held last year. On November 16, over fifty students convened in the library to compete head -to-head in the Super Smash Brothers Melee. Students paid $5 to play and $5 for pizza and drinks. All of the funds will help defray the expenses for the annual National Honor Society Trip to New York City. Taylor Cauchi-Gerace in Ms. Wink’s Class Rebecca Bilello and Kaylee Orlando in Ms. Poerio’s Class Mount Sinai Mirror 15 MOUNT SINAI HIGH SCHOOL A.P Spanish Students Visit NYC Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Our MSTA team of teachers, friends and family came together to support the fight against breast cancer by donating or participating in the Making Strides Walk at Jones Beach on Sunday, October 18. We had a beautiful day and enjoyed the 5-mile beachside walk while showing our support for this great cause. Donations exceeded $2,000 and our team of walkers gets larger each year (19 this year!). Something new this year was Pink Fridays at our schools. Teachers, staff and students wore pink on Fridays in October to show their support, and many purchased pink MSTA tee-shirts with these profits donated as well. Thank you to all who helped make this our best year yet! Patrick Hanaj, Ross DiBetta, Emily Shaljian, Gabriela Custodio, Julia Machado, Brittany Grego, Su Yang, Kasidy Smith On October 30, students in our Advanced Placement Spanish Language and Culture class visited the Repertorio Español in Manhattan, a theater devoted to producing Latin American, Spanish, and HispanicAmerican theatrical performances. The students enjoyed the production, “En el tiempo de las Mariposas,” a play based on the Julia Alvarez novel of the same title, In the Time of the Butterflies. The play, based on historical people and events, portrays the story of the four Mirabal sisters as they fight against the dictatorial regime of General Trujillo through decades of violence in the Dominican Republic. These heroines fought against traditional gender roles and joined the movement to lead their beloved country to freedom. The play was performed entirely in Spanish and gave students not only the opportunity to practice their language skills, but also insight into the culture and history of the Dominican Republic. F Financial Aid Night inancial Aid Night was held on Wednesday, November 4, 2015, in the high school auditorium. Jacqueline Pascariello, Director of Financial Aid and Scholarship Services at Stony Brook University, gave an informative presentation to a group of high school seniors and their parents. Ms. Pascariello spoke in depth on such topics as types of Financial Aid, various loans that are available to students, and the process of applying for financial aid using the FAFSA form Best Buddies With the school year back in session, it is a time to reflect and set new goals. Best Buddies is an international organization, which brings people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) together with general education students to form lasting bonds. Members of Mount Sinai’s Best Buddies aim to create one-to -one friendships that last beyond the school year. They also want to raise awareness in the community about this important mission. The club is already in full swing, having mapped out future events and socials! We already have had great success following our first meeting with an amazing turnout of seventy smiling faces, and two social events. These socials nurture new friendships and include dancing, arts and crafts, games, music and food. The first major fundraiser took place October 10. A profitable carwash was held at Applebee's in Miller Place. Members look forward to a great year filled with new friends and enjoyment. Mount Sinai Mirror 16 MOUNT SINAI HIGH SCHOOL Homecoming/Spirit Week 2015 Powderpuff Game The Student Government held its ninth annual Powderpuff game under the lights on Wednesday, October 21. Having practiced for several weeks and keeping with building team spirit, girls from the junior and senior classes arrived on the turf early. Each team had a set of boys coaching them. The juniors' uniforms were light green and the seniors' were hot pink. Prior to the start of the game, all of the players were on the field. It truly was a moving sight with the number of eager participants. A new rule was put in place this year. Instead of having ten players from each team on the field, one player was eliminated from each side. Therefore, each team was allowed nine players on the field. Members of the faculty supervised and officiated the event. The Powderpuff boys' cheerleaders were also judged on their performance at halftime. The senior boys won the cheerleading segment, gaining a point for the senior girls. The seniors, having lost as juniors the year before, were ready to win. The juniors played an excellent game, but they were unable to stop Erika Shea (senior) from scoring two touchdowns. The highlight for the juniors was an interception in the end zone by Cassie Schmitt. The event was a success and the seniors won 15 to 7. Mount Sinai High School celebrated Homecoming/Spirit Week from October 19 through October 24. “Disney Movies” were chosen as this year’s Homecoming theme. The choices were as follows: Seniors Juniors Sophomores Freshmen Alice in Wonderland Lion King Finding Nemo Monsters, Inc. The celebration began with hall decorating on October 16. Spirit Week followed with a specific designation for each day: Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Twin Day Clash Day Twin Day Neon Day Throwback Thursday Black/Red Day Throwback Thursday Mount Sinai Mirror 17 MOUNT SINAI HIGH SCHOOL Homecoming/Spirit Week 2015 On Friday, the freshmen and juniors wore red, and sophomores and seniors wore black. The Pep Rally was held at the end of the day in the gymnasium. Athletic teams were introduced, and the Homecoming King and Queen, Ray Krahm and Emily Whelan, were chosen. “Spirit points” were awarded to classes based on their participation during the week’s festivities. In addition, a food collection contest was held for non-perishable food items and subsequently donated to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Riverhead AARP. Notably, the freshmen collected the most items. Over 1,600 pounds of food was collected. A special thanks to the middle and elementary schools for their participation in the food drive. The week was highlighted by our annual homecoming parade and football game. The floats were amazing this year! The floats were judged, and after spirit points were added to the judges’ tally, the sophomores won overall with their amazing float and great participation during the week. Class of 2018 What better way to end the week than with an amazing victory by the Mount Sinai Varsity Football team as they easily defeated the team from East Hampton. Mount Sinai Mirror 18 MOUNT SINAI HIGH SCHOOL Safe Halloween T he Student Government held its 5th Annual Safe Halloween on Saturday, October 31, at Mount Sinai High School. This was the first year it was actually held on Halloween day! From 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., Mount Sinai High School was decorated and transformed into a safe and fun environment where costumed children paraded through the halls in search of tricks and treats. Children and parents were greeted with treats, organized games and activities hosted by twelve clubs from the high, middle and elementary schools. Record crowds attended this year’s event. The annual raffle of guessing the number of candy corn kernels in the jar was also held. PJ Cinemas donated an additional prize of two free movie tickets! Food and refreshments were sold in the cafeteria thanks to Bagels Your Way and the Miller Place Pastaria. Some of the activities provided for the children included beanbag-tossing, coloring, toilet paper mummies, face painting, decorating cookies, and playing with balloons. The Mount Sinai Teachers Association once again sponsored the amazingly scary Haunted Hallway. The cast in the Haunted House consisted of members of the Student Government. Non-perishable food items were collected at the door and donated to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and AARP. Ten boxes of food were filled by the end of the day. A big thank you goes out to all the faculty, staff, club members, and outside organizations. The day was a great success!
