Summer & Electricity: Last months were
Nederlandse versie: volgende pagina
(and still are) a bit agitated. First we had the criminal
chalk drawing on 45 near the field, afterwards the
(already withdrawn) plan of making Droevendaal Dutch only. And right
at this moment the big-not-to-escape electra project.
An ideal summer should be nice, warm, light and relaxed, being
together with people you like. Probably summer 2009 on Droevendaal
will resembles this idea for a big part. Maybe the articles in this
Droevendalia will help with enjoying the summer.
The electricity project raises quite some emotions, both because what is
done (very bright lights we cannot change ourselves, emergency exits
everywhere etc.) and because of the underlying attitude of Idealis
towards us. To get these emotions structured and constructive, 4
barracks (the second 'shift') agreed that they would not open their
barracks to the workers. We noticed Idealis one day before the actual
action, including a letter with several questions and ideas for
improvement. They were not amused and invited us for a talk. So we
went to their Ivory tower, to meet with people with -just as us- good
intentions but with a totally different view on responsibility, efficiency,
safety and the need to follow rules and regulations.
After a long talk, finally we reached to a proposal a point that
Droevendaal will allow the workers to continue but that there will be
next week (the week of July 1st) a more relaxed conservation in which
Idealis will seriously look for alternatives for the things that hurt our
way of living. If that will lead to changes, they will be also be done backward (=on the already finished
barracks). This sounds illogical, but we think that that is the way construction workers like to work: continue
on all costs, because in a team everything depends on each other. At the moment of writing, it is not clear if
this proposal will be taken over by the striking barracks. So, to be continued soon....
A related, often asked question is if you can refuse to open your private room to the workers. If you ask Idealis,
the answer is of course 'no'. But, if you feel you like to refuse (what is your private choice), maybe just do it.
And do it the official way (send a letter before to Idealis etc.), and give good reasons: you have really no time
for it, you and inhabitants after you most probably don't need an extra socket, there are no good reasons to do
that right now, Idealis did not ask the tenant's representative for advise (what they legally must do), they did
very little with the spontaneous advice, you got a very short notice etc. Until now, this approach seems to
work. We will see where it ends up.
There are rumours on Droevendaal about somebody actually destroying outside lamps. We think it is more
Droevendaal like to be constructive and creative. Together with this Droevendalia, you will find a piece of
colour filter for spots (it is taken over from former Unitas), what you might use to decorate your lamps and
make them less bright (but maybe first wait on the outcome of the talks). As both Idealis and fire brigade may
not have our technical knowledge about this material, it can be advisable to attach them only to the outside of
the armatures, to avoid institutions becoming nervous for nothing.

Zomer & electriciteit:
De laatste maanden waren en zijn opwindend: eerst de misdadige
krijttekening op de muur van 45, daarna het (inmiddels teruggetrokken) plan om geen internationale
studenten meer toe te laten en nu het electraproject. Een ideale zomer is rustig, warm, licht en ontspannen,
samen met mensen waar je je thuis bij voelt. Zomer 2009 op Droef zal waarschijnlijk toch wel voor een groot
deel op deze ideale zomer lijken. Mogelijk zal het leesvoer in deze Droevendalia je helpen van de zomer te
genieten.
Het electraproject blijkt aardig wat emoties op
te roepen, zowel vanwege wat is gebeurt
alsmede door de algemene houding van
Idealis. Om iets gericht met deze emoties te
doen hebben 4 barakken (de 'tweede shift')
besloten om de aannemers de toegang te
ontzeggen. Idealis was een dag van tevoren
geïnformeerd, tezamen met de redenen voor
deze actie en ideeën voor verbetering.
Zoals te verwachten was waren ze niet blij; we
werden uitgenodigd voor een gesprek op de
Ivoren toren oftewel het hoofdkantoor. Daar
ontmoetten we de andere kant van het project:
mensen, net als wij van goede wil maar met
een
totaal
andere
visie
op
verantwoordelijkheid, efficiëntie, veiligheid en
de noodzaak om regels en verordeningen op te
volgen.
Na een lang gesprek kwamen we uit op een
voostel dat de 4 barakken wel werkers zullen
toelaten maar dat er in de komende week (de week van 1 juli) een wat meer ontspannen gesprek zal zijn waarin
Idealis serieus naar onze voorstellen (die onze leefkwaliteit beïnvloeden) zal luisteren. Als er dingen
veranderen, zal dat met terugwerkende kracht op de al gedane barakken gebeuren. Dat klinkt onlogisch maar
we denken dat dat de manier is waarom bouwvakkers graag willen werken: hoe dan ook doorgaan, omdat je in
een team bezig bent. Op dit moment is het nog niet duidelijk of de 4 stakende barakken zullen instemmen met
dit voorstel. Dus, wordt binnenkort vervolgd.
Een gerelateerde, veel gestelde vraag is of je de installateurs kunt weigeren van je eigen kamer. Als je het
Idealis vraagt is het antwoord natuurlijk 'nee'. Naar ons idee moet je - als je wilt weigeren natuurlijk, dat is je
eigen keus - dat gewoon proberen. En het liefst op de officiële manier (van tevoren een brief sturen naar
Idealis) en met de juiste argumenten, bijvoorbeeld dat jij en de mensen die na jou op de kamer komen
hoogstwaarschijnlijk geen extra stopcontacten nodig hebben, dat je er gewoon geen tijd voor hebt, dat er geen
goede reden is waarom de ingreep nú moet gebeuren, Idealis heeft de bewoners nooit om advies gevraagd
(hoewel ze dat wel behoren te doen), ze hebben naar onze maatstaven ook niet erg veel met het spontaan
gegeven advies gedaan, je kreeg het te laat te horen etc.. Tot dusver lijkt deze aanpak te werken.
Er zijn geruchten dat iemand bewust buitenverlichting onklaar maakt. Naar ons idee is het meer Droevendaaleigen om opbouwend en creatief te zijn. Gelijk met deze Dalia krijg je een stukje kleurfilter voor toneelspots
(afkomstig uit de boedel van voormalig Unitas). Dit zou je, als we binnenkort weten wat er gaat veranderen en
wat niet, kunnen gebruiken om de te felle lampen van een leuk kleurtje te voorzien. Omdat zowel Idealis als de
brandweer niet over onze technische kennis beschikken kan het handig zijn om de filters aan de buitenkant
van het armatuur te bevestigen, zodat de genoemde instituties niet onterecht zenuwachtig worden.
Wordt binnenkort vervolgd.. Er is al aardig wat informatie verzameld op www.droevendaal.nl/elektra. Soms
verspreiden we informatie via een emaillijst die vooral aan alle 'baraksoudsten' gestuurd wordt (met de vraag

Self-rule?
Gandhi inspires me since a very young age. What makes him so special to me, is that he showed with his own
life, how real idealism can become. His example can maybe give us new ideas and inspiration for our own way
of life. Therefore I will shortly summarize a small part of his philosophy, which may be interesting to you, to
get to know Gandhi a bit more.
His idea of power, fits many of us I guess: “Power resides in the people. Parliaments have no power or
even existence independently of the people.” (So does Idealis.) “Civil disobedience is the storehouse of power.
People unwilling to conform to the laws of the legislature, and prepared to suffer the consequences of noncompliance, they will bring the whole legislative and executive machinery to a standstill.” (As Gandhi showed
the world in 1930/31 with his salt march, where millions broke the salt laws, filling prisons and paralyzing the
government).
Freedom was one of Gandhi's main objectives, “swaraj (self-rule) meant a mutual liberation from the
domination-submission symbiosis.” He explained, that the outward freedom, that we shall attain will only be
in exact proportion to the inward freedom to which we may have grown at a given moment. This inward
freedom requires a personal journey, a search for self-knowledge that liberates one from the sort of fear and
insecurity that fuels both the desire to dominate or to be dominated. Gandhi's struggle for swaraj, is infinitely
greater than and includes independence, because it means not merely “a change of government” but “a real
change of heart at the part of the people”.
Gandhi's famous methods for attaining this freedom: Truth and nonviolence are the means for
establishing social reforms (constructive programmes). Gandhi's constructive programmes focused on
swadeshi (self-reliance) and sarvodaya (welfare for all, economic equality), this leads to true freedom. In
Gandhi's words: “No one can be free until all are free, liberty must imply equality and the only method of
achieving this is through nonviolence.”
The mahatma wrote no fewer than a hundred volumes, but if you really want to get to understand his
philosophy, better take his own words into account: “My actions alone are the greatest exposition of truth
and nonviolence. Those who believe in these can propagate them only by following them in practice. They
call for no books.”
Gandi's Satyagraha ashram (an 'ashram' is a kind of community) had the following objective: “that its
members should qualify themselves for, and make a constant endeavor towards, the service of the country,
not inconsistent with the universal welfare.” I selected some of the ashram observances, which are seen as
essential for the fulfillment of the above ashram objective:
- Truth: worshippers of Truth may not resort to untruth
- Non-violence or love; The active part of non-violence is Love. The law of love requires equal consideration
for all life, from the tiniest insect to the highest man. He must thus love the wrongdoer, but he must never
submit to is wrong or his injustice. Satyagraha is a weapon of the strong; it admits of no violence under any
circumstance whatever; in thought, word and deed.
- Control of the palate: eating is necessary only for sustaining the body and keeping it a fit instrument for
service and must never be practiced for self-indulgence.
-Stealing: It is also theft if one receives anything which one does not really need.
-Physical labour: man can be saved from injuring society, as well as himself, only if he sustains his physical
existence by physical labour.
- Swadeshi (self-reliance): ”He therefore serves the world best by first serving his neighbour.” “Observances
for swadesi makes for order in the world; the breach of it leads to chaos.”
- Fearlessness: “A satyagrahi enjoys a degree of freedom not possible for others, for he becomes a truly
fearless person.”
-Tolerance
Although Gandhi might seem somewhat extreme, with his vow of celibacy, his days of silence and his
enduring fasts, most of his views, for instance on power, freedom and community life are timeless for me.
Maybe once, we are also ready for real self-rule. Until then I am happy to enjoy now our 'vrijstaat'
Droevendaal.

Samenvatting: Zelfbestuur?
Gandhi liet door zijn eigen leven zien hoe idealen realiteit kunnen worden. Zijn ideeën betroffen onder andere
eerlijkheid, geweldloosheid, tevreden zijn met wat je nodig hebt, jezelf blijven door fysiek werk te verrichten,
jezelf verwerkelijken door anderen te dienen, geen angst hebben (vanuit je vrijheid) en tolerantie.
Dit zijn verreikende en tijdloze idealen; in onze 'vrijstaat' Droevendaal kunnen we daar alvast een snufje van
proberen te proeven.

Op bezoek bij…
Sneeuwwitje en de 7 dwergen!
Welkom bij Op Bezoek Bij: BARAK NR 55!
Barak 55 ligt more or less in het midden van Droevendaal, gelegen aan onze enige echte prachtige Droef-vijver.
De barak is genaamd: Sneeuwwitje en de 7 Dwergen! Vernoemd naar de inmiddels bejaarde en pikzwarte kat
Sneeuwwitje, en de 7 inwoners die het huis ooit tijdelijk in een grijs verleden heeft geteld.
Wij vroegen ze over hun identiteit, het Droefleven en hun visie op de Droevendaalse actualiteiten. Leest en
huivert, het exclusieve interview met de 7 dwergen van Sneeuwwitje.
66.6% van de menselijke populatie op 55, vlnr: Alexander, Stefan, één der Eveliens en Ellen.

Wie zijn die lui op 55?
Wij interviewden Ellen en een van de twee
Eveliens. Verder wonen in de barak Kris, Stefan,
Alexander en de andere Evelien. Bijna allemaal
wur-studenten, Ellen en Kris studeren biologie,
Stefan bos-& natuurbeheer, Alexander moleculaire
wetenschappen,
Evelien
internationale
ontwikkelingsstudies en de andere Evelien
momenteel nog applied animal science aan
Larenstein, en binnenkort een dubbele master aan
de uni.
Verder hebben we naast de mensenwereld
uiteraard nog de dierenwereld: 3 katten, Nila,
Pieuw – de overloper van 59 – en Sneeuwwitje.
Deze bejaarde kat heeft het even zwaar gehad, maar
is sinds het – halleluja – eko-voer met kruiden –
dieet weer helemaal fit en vitaal! Ooit telde het huis
evenveel katten als mensen (6), maar volgens Ellen
is 3 nu wel genoeg. “Al die blèrende beesten aan je
voeten elke morgen”, aldus Ellen, vindt ze een
beetje teveel van het goede. Ook telt het huis nog 7
kippen.
Wat typeert jullie?
Op deze vraag kwam als eerste antwoord: “We
hebben een vet hip bioscoopscherm! Maar niet te
hard roepen want straks komen mensen 'm jatten.”
En inderdaad, in de ouderwetse houten kast pronkt
een
wonderschoon
breedbeeldscherm,
incl
computer met Linux en DC++, waarop het huis
regelmatig gezamenlijk films kijkt.
Verder zijn de bewoners erg muzikaal. Zo kwamen
wij de tuin ingewandeld onder het genot een
prachtig gezongen lied “De Stad Amsterdam”, live
gespeeld door Kris op viool met nog 2 andere
gasten op gitaar en – ja hoe heet dat – een soort
accordeon. Verder wordt in het huis harp, turkse
gitaar, mandola, fluit en piano gespeeld. Bijna
iedereen speelt wel gitaar, en Stefan leeft zich uit op
de mondharmonica. Viva la musica!
De sfeer is goed in huize Sneeuwwitje, hoe kan het
ook anders. ☺ Er wordt vaak samen gegeten en er
worden regelmatig spelletjes gespeeld. Dus als jij

Nu wat actualiteiten. Wat vinden jullie van het
elektraproject van Idealis? En van het afstoten van
de inventaris?
We vinden het echt helemaal niks! We hebben
genoeg stopcontacten. Wat ons betreft is het
nergens voor nodig en we hebben geen zin in
geknutsel op onze kamers, helemaal als we zelf niet
thuis zijn. Het is veel gedoe om die muren vrij te
krijgen van meubels (volgestouwde kasten e.d.), we
hebben die extra stopcontacten niet nodig, en ze
hebben ons advies gewoon aan de kant geschoven.
We horen graag over de mogelijkheden om ze te
weigeren.
De oven vinden we ook een probleem. We zijn al
heel lang aan het klagen voor een nieuwe oven, en
telkens krijgen we die niet. De pitten doen het niet
ideaal en de oven valt vaak uit. Dat kun je een
monteur niet goed laten zien, want het gebeurt vaak
pas na een tijdje. Ook het aansteken is best
ook fan bent van "Bausack" (klooien en pesten met
blokken), Agricola of Weerwolven… Visit 55!
Verder hebben ze in de voortuin naast de partytent
een mooie moestuin, met bloeiende courgettes,
oogstklare spinazie en een rondhoppende kikkers.
Overigens, in de partytent worden soms hele
gezellige Linux-nerd-loungeparties gehouden. Zo
ook vorige week: een feest ter ere van 2
verjaardagen (Ellen en Evelien) gecombineerd met
de Fedora loungeparty voor de nieuwe Linuxdistributie. Wow, dat het bestaat… ☺
Wat vinden jullie van Droef? Positief en negatief.
Niet leuk aan Droef is dat je er ooit weer weg moet.
Ze zouden een soort “Droef voor gevorderden”
moeten maken! Erg mooi aan Droef is dat je er
ontzettend veel ruimte hebt om je creativiteit kwijt
te kunnen. Muziek, kunst (zie bv het grote schilderij
in de huiskamer), fotografie, schilderen, tuinieren…
En kippenhokken bouwen, valt ook
onder kunst toch? Het fijnste is nog
wel de natuur om je heen. Dat is ook
wat de Droefmensen gemeen hebben,
dat ze allemaal redelijk dicht bij de
natuur staan.
En er heerst een goede sfeer op
Droef. Hoewel het stiekem toch ook
nog wel een beetje gesloten is. Het is
niet zo dat iedereen mekaar kent, en
dat je nou zonder reden zomaar
ergens binnen stapt om een praatje te
maken. Dat zou wel wat meer mogen.
Wat is jullie hippiegehalte op een
schaal van 1 tot 10? Denk aan vego,
bio…
Tja een cijfer is moeilijk te geven. Er
is eigenlijk maar 1 echte vegetariër,
Ellen. De rest eet in principe weinig en biologisch
vlees, op een iemand na. Verder wordt er vrij
biologisch ingekocht. En de moestuin wordt
redelijk goed bijgehouden. Evelien is in Kristiana
geweest in Denemarken en zegt: Als we onszelf
daarmee vergelijken krijgen we een dikke
onvoldoende.
gevaarlijk. Het is geen veilige oven, en in juli wordt
het ons eigendom. Het wordt er dus absoluut niet
veiliger op als alle studenten zelf gaan lopen
knutselen
met
gas.
Idealis
moet
haar
verantwoordelijkheid nemen, het lijkt ze helemaal
niet te gaan om onze veiligheid. Wat betreft de
koelkast, dat is geen probleem. Je haalt ze
makkelijk ergens vandaan, en een koelkast geeft
geen onveilige situatie. Voor het afstoten van de
oven doen we graag mee aan een petitie! (met
handtekeningen van 35% van Droef kunnen we het
afstoten vd inventaris tegenhouden).
Wat denken jullie van het beeld dat de
buitenwereld van Droef heeft?
De buitenwereld heeft volgens ons wel een verkeerd
beeld van Droef. Alsof wij hier allemaal blowen en
per sé biologisch en vegetarisch koken, en te laat
komen en zo. Maar dat hoeft helemaal niet. Dat is
ook juist het leuke aan Droef, dat er veel
verschillende mensen wonen met ieder zijn eigen
ideeën. En iedereen is ook welkom, je hoeft
helemaal niet per sé vegetariër te zijn. Wat wel
klopt is dat min of meer iedereen graag dicht bij de
natuur leeft. Dat moet wel een beetje bij je passen
als je hier op Droef komt wonen.

Summary: Let's visit barrack 55!
Barrack 55 is full of self-made music, cats and
creative people. Including the art of constructing a
poultry house.
The inhabitants also look watching movies
together and living close to nature. And they like
living on Droevendaal, however there could be a
bit more inter-barrackal exchange.
Improve the insulation in the 'washok'
Step 1: Look at which tubes are giving heat away for nothing,
even in summer. Measure roughly their length and more
precise their diameter.
For example:
3 meter: 18mm
2 meter: 22mm
4 meter: 28mm
Step 2: Buy the isolation material tubes, and some tyrerips, for
example at Van Geels in Bennekom. Total cost will be about 7
to 8 euroos.
Step 3: Fix the insulation around the pipes.
You can leave some spots uninsulated to help
the laundry drying.
Advantages:
- You don't burn your skin anymore while
putting the laundry
- The washok and the nearby spaces will get
less warm and humid in summer
- We save energy and save the planet!
In the pilot, there was enough heat left to dry
the laundry in a short time. And the climate
and smell of the washok improved.

99 Productions presents… Droef Cafè @ 99!
99 is so full of good food that it was a pity to keep it for ourselves only… So it happened that two people had the
same idea at the very same time: why don’t we sell fresh bread and home-made jam from one of our windows?
And why don’t we also sell the delicious cappuccinos we use to have every day? And we can perhaps give the
profit to charity.. .to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, a marine wildlife conservation organization in the
mission of ending the illegal whaling on the Antartic Whale Sanctuary.
others can get together on Saturday afternoons,
chatting and, why not?, even playing some music
together. This is also the part we enjoy the most!
Moreover, it would be nice if more people from
Droef got involved as well: do you enjoy baking? Do
you have some nice home-made drinks? Contact us
in advance and we’ll add it to the “menu”! In fact,
Droef Café is a sort of work in progress: we want to
keep the menu as free and diverse as possible,
varying the offer every time according to the
creativity of the moment and the availability of
fresh ingredients. This means that surprises are
going to come in the next weeks, and you’ll never
get bored of our café! We’ll keep you up to date by
posting our fliers every Friday.
The idea was so attractive that we couldn’t resist,
and three days later we opened our little “shop”.
The pilot went very well, and we got a great support
from droevendaalers –some of our “customers”
spent the whole afternoon there! We realized then
that people enjoyed sitting down in the sun,
chatting and having something to drink: not a shop,
but a café was the way to go! So the idea has grown,
and last Saturday the offer was much wider: not
only cappuccinos and bread, but cookies, tiramisu,
mint tea, chocolate cake...and much more. All 99ers
got enthusiastically involved: someone cooked or
baked, someone played music and someone helped
out in the kitchen when a group of 10 people
arrived all at once. Without even thinking about it,
the Droef Café has become an amazing source of
positive energy for the house, keeping us even
closer than we were before.
To conclude, we want thank droevendaalers for
their nice support of our little initiative. We have
really a lot of fun, and that’s what matters. So...we
hope to see you all next Saturday!

Samenvatting: DroefCafe @ 99
Droef Café is een gelegenheid waar mensen kunnen
genieten van lekker, zelfgemaakt eten en drinken
en ook kunnen zitten, ontspannen en bijkletsen.
And this is what we would like to bring to the whole
of Droef as well...is it too ambitious? Droef Café is a
place where people can have nice home-made food
and drinks, but also a place to sit down, relax and
spend time together. If on the one hand we want to
offer quality food for cheap prices, on the other
hand the most important aspect is to provide a sort
of “community place” where droevendaalers and

Is there live after Henk? or:
A clean Droevendaal, a common responsibility?
This summer, our conscience in cleaning Henk will retire. His replacent was discussed in the last
Droefmeeting, where the idea of doing his work by our self was raised. However, apart from having nice social
and environmental ideals we are also students with lack of time and other priorities. Maybe the balance
between ideals and reality can be found in paying those who put time and effort in it. On the other hand,
volunteers running Greengroup, Common Barrack, DroefParty, VOKO, Volkskeuken, DroeviMovie, DroefCafe,
Daily Living Council and all other activities are not paid either. We have to think about that and what is the
best solution.
Money can be organized by Idealis (in fact we pay for it ourselves, and doing it by ourselves is much cheaper
anyway as having a company from outside).
The idea is to start with the Droevendaal Cleaning Service as a pilot this summer, for 3 to 5 months. We are
looking for a group of people who would like to be involved in cleaning Droevendaal in a way that fits to its
people and purpose. It will be a task of about 2 to 4 hours a week in total, maybe not only doing a fixed list of
actions but also feeling responsible and
looking to Droef in another way. And
maybe teach others to share that
responsibility. In an ideal situation, we can
rotate this task between people of all
different barracks.
So, concreet we need:
* Ideas and opinions how to handle this.
How to organize, pay people or not?
* People willing to take active part. It will be
nice, active, physical work :)

Is er leven na Henk? Of: Is een opgeruimd Droevendaal onze
gemeenschappelijke verantwoordelijkheid?
Deze zomer gaat ons schoonmaakgeweten Henk met vervroegd pensioen. In de laatste Droefvergadering
hebben we over zijn vervanging gepraat, waarbij werd voorgesteld dat we zelf zijn werk overnemen. Maar
hoewel we natúúúrlijk allemaal vol mooie idealen zitten hoe we goed met elkaar en onze omgeving omgaan
blijven we ook studenten met tijdsdruk en andere prioriteiten. Misschien kunnen we een balans hierin vinden
door diegenen die dit werk doen daarvoor te vergoeden. Wat gelijk weer de vraag opwerpt waarom vrijwilligers
die zich bezighouden met Groenbeheer, Algemene Barak, VOKO, Volkskeuken, DroefCafe, DroeviMovi,
Dagelijks Woonbestuur enz. dan niet ook een vergoeding zouden moeten krijgen. We moeten gezamenlijk op

Het geld kan via Idealis georganiseerd worden (uiteindelijk betalen we het zelf in onze servicekosten, en het zal
in ieder geval goedkoper zijn dan een bedrijf van buiten) .
Het idee is nu om deze zomer te beginnen met een proefperiode van 3 tot 5 maanden. We willen een groep
samenstellen van gemotiveerde mensen om Droevendaal naar Droefwaardige maatstaven netjes te houden.
Uiteindelijk is het waarschijnlijk ca 2 tot 4 uur per week werk in totaal, en bij voorkeur niet alleen het vaste
schema afwerken maar je ook verantwoordelijk voelen en naar Droevendaal kijken alsof het je eigen kamer is
(voor zover van toepassing...). Misschien zelfs proberen om het verantwoordelijkheidsgevoel een breder
draagvlak te geven. In een ideale situatie zou de taak zelfs over alle barakken kunnen rouleren.
Concreet zijn we op zoek naar:
* Ideeën en meningen: hoe moeten we hiermee omgaan, hoe zouden we het kunnen organiseren? Moeten we
mensen hiervoor betalen?
* Teamleden: wie wil helpen? Het is lekker, actief, fysiek werk :)

A long hot summer is coming, how to get some decent
sleep during the hot nights?
Summer brings not only joy outside the barrack, but also sweaty nights on the attic in your room, which might
force you to sleep on the ground, or outside in a tent.
After a hot summer some years ago, I thought about a solution to bring some fresh cool air from outside on my
bed at the attic, and now I'm asked to share this with you.
Its a simple combination of a computer fan and a flexible airtube, which sucks air from the opening of your
small window, and brings it to your bed!
What do you need:
• Computer fan (12 v, 12 cm ø): you can buy it at every computer shop or try to find it second-hand
• Adapter (12 v, dc), praxis, gamma etc. You can even look for one with adjustable output (for example
3-6-9-12 V) . There are lots of them at Emmaus.
• Flexible airtube (± 10 cm ø, lenght 2m used eg in kitchens) Praxis, Gamma, Geels (in Bennekom),
GIJ etc.

Door middel van een luchtbuis en een kleine

How to make it:
Make a frame of the wood so you can place the computer fan in front of the window.
With the cardbord an ducktape you make a “box” with on one side the fan, and on the other the airtube. Attach
the wire to the red and blue strings of the fan and put it through the airtube.
You can also put a rope from the window to the place where you want the tube with fresh air in order to give
the tube more strength. When you put the exit above your bed, the cool air will go down by itself cq. by the laws
of physics.
Put the switch in the wire on a place close to your bed so you can turn it off, and attach the and of the wire to
the adapter.
Test if the fan is working and turning in the right direction ( in order to blow air into your room) and place
everything at the right place. Don't forget to the adapter out of the socket when your not using it!
Now you can enjoy the hot summer nights!

!!! Droeffeest 2009 !!!
This year's Droeffeest is coming up again, and Saturday the 19th of September is the chosen date for this
wonderful eventful thing. On this date there is however no moon whatsoever (it's the new moon then), we are
this full into the Idealis electricity-project so we decided that thematically the party should be about
illumination and enlightenment, to guard us from the darkness and to make up for the abscess of a full
moon. So expect a lot of lights, candles and fires, to keep our spirits light and bright and to become enlightened
during the night! The main stage of the Droeffeest will be on our main field were we want to kick off in the
afternoon with workshops, information and food followed by bands in the evening. All barracks are asked to
give parties during the night to keep our fire burning. Barrack’s 51 and 89 (surprisingly) already agreed on
hosting a party then, hopefully all of you will have a great idea for a party as well, the more the better! The
Common Barrack will off course also be a party place during the night, the continuation of the celebrations on
the field, where we also plan to have some bands play until late at night and some groovy dj’s to keep
everybody dancing. If you have any suggestions for bands, dj’s or other elements of the program, please let us
know!
Evaluation of Droeffeest 2008
Next to everything concerning Droeffeest that was very nice, there were also some things worth mentioning
that need some thought so that we can improve it or prevent it from happening this year.
- Budget. The intention of Droeffeest’s budget is to break even after the festival. If we do end up with profit,
that money goes back into the party of the following year, for which we can decide to use it as a buffer or to
invest it in something cool. Last year, we used the profit of the year before as a buffer, which was a good
decision in the end. The unexpected expenses were quite high last year and we had less visitors during the
night than expected, resulting in having less beers sold. So we didn’t reach the break even point then, luckily
we were still able to refund all the money for the “Droef Garantie Plan”, but our buffer for this year has gotten
considerably smaller. So this is something for us to keep in mind, we don’t want to commercialize things, but
we do want to stay in business, party business that is!

- For the safety of the Droevendaal inhabitants and visitors we used a telephone list to contact each other in
case of emergency. Last year we had to use it a couple of times, and it worked well. People were at the spot in
minutes. In spite of our efforts, last year there were still some incidents around Droeffeest namely:
• An incident near the Common Barrack where some people got mad at other people and decided that it
would be cool to throw bottles at the Common Barrack and each other.
• Some people though it was cool to burn some of our stuff laying around on campfires on the field
• At the salsa party in 105 some guests made themselves unwanted by behaving badly and were asked to leave
Droevendaal. Thanks to the telephone list we were safely able to do this.
These points of attention make us realize once again that we can only pull of a Droeffeest if we work together
the best we can.

As always, we need all the hands we can get, especially on the day itself and the weeks before, but already now
we can use lots of help as well. We, the committee, can not do everything ourselves and we could definitely
need some fresh energy! Also for next year it would be good if more people will get some experience with
organizing a Droeffeest. During the summer holidays there is not much happening so you don’t have to spend
all the summer here if you want to get involved.
Above two vacancies are listed. One is for Decoration, in which many people can participate. Right now, we are
going to do mostly brainstorming and we start to work out some ideas. In the month preceding the festival
most work will have to be done, particularly making decorations, building up the party beforehand and helping
out on the day itself with lots of things, amongst others to help with tapping beers and to cook a healthy and
tasty meal for everybody. So please offer your help at [email protected] to make the Droeffeest
possible again!
Bands wanted!
Do you know a good band that would like to play for an apple and an egg (a crate of beer and some expenses
being covered)? Let us know! Also other acts that would perhaps not fit on the main stage like theatre or

Summer tip 2: The Eng & the Art Of Walking
Right on our backyard starts a very nice, small scale and largely agricultural (well, with a lot of horses)
landscape: the 'Wageningse Eng'. It is always a good place to run, walk or cycle, but this summer there is
something special: different artists from this area forged together a sculpture route.
For soil scientists: the Dutch 'Eng' (or 'Es', or 'Enk') in this context means soil with a higher organic matter
content because of hundreds of years of cultivation and fertilization. 'Eng' also means 'narrow'.

Wat ik zo bijzonder aan de Eng vind, zijn de tegenstellingen.
Hoog - laag, open- gesloten, ruim- versnipperd. Ik heb twee
punten in het landschap gezet die deze tegenstellingen
verbeelden. Punt aan de Zuidkant en Contrapunt aan de
noordkant van de Eng.

What I admire most in the Eng are its contradictions. Highlow, open - closed, wide - fragmented. I put two points in the
landscape to depict this contradictions. 'Point' at the South
side and 'Contrapoint' at the North side of the Eng.

ligt er al in verscholen.

In this transition area between the flat Valley and
the hills of the Veluwe, time seems to be frozen.

The landscape as one self's metaphor. The seed of
development is already concealed in it.

De Wageningse Eng: een wirwar van weggetjes,
van weitjes, moestuintjes, maïsvelden, hekjes en
paaltjes. De vlag met erop de stamboom van
Darwin gecombineerd met een plattegrondteken;
de stip en de pijl. Waar bevind ik mij; op weg door
De Eng? Op mijn levenspad? In de tijd? In de
wereld? Een vlag is een herkenningspunt. Maar
als je deze vlag ziet; Wat herken je dan? Waar ben
je dan? Of wordt je door deze vlag
gedesoriënteerd?
The Wageningen Eng: a
labyrinth of small
roads, meadows, vegetable gardens, corn fields,
fences and stakes. The fane with the family tree of
Darwin combined with map symbols: point and
arrow. What is my position: on the Eng? On my path
in life? In space? In time? In the world? A fane is a
landmark. But if you see this fane, what do you
recognize? What is your position? Or is this fane
disorientating you?

4 Biek van Galen: Twee jagers
Two hunters
Dit weilandje verbeeldt voor mij de sfeer van de
Wageningse Eng. Kleinschalig en druk begraasd. De
buizerd duikt naar prooi in dit (te) krappe veldje. De
kraai vind dat geen goed plan, het is zijn territorium.
Wie gaat dit winnen?
De buizerd, de kraai of.. misschien de prooi?
To me, this field represents the mood of Wageningen
Eng. Smallscale and heavily grazed. The buzzard
dives to prey in this (too) small field. The crow does
not agree, it's his territory. Who will be the winner?
The buzzard, the crow.. or maybe the prey?

Destination
Net als de kleine stukjes land, niet meer in gebruik,
zijn wij zoekend naar onze bestemming of tevreden
met wat er is. Volg het pad naar de plek van
Bestemming en vul zelf maar in.
Just like the small pieces of land, no longer in use,
we are searching for our destination or satisfied with
what is there. Follow the path to the spot of
Destination and fill in yourself.

De Eng biedt elk seizoen een bont palet aan percelen,

rondetafel, die in kleur en (ei)vorm de vruchtbaarheid
van de Eng symboliseert. Rond de Eng Tafel strijdt de
orde van Eng-thousiastelingen voor het behoud van dit
unieke landschap....

of plots, in which crops rotate for centuries in a
fixed pattern.

De kijkrichting in deze gedichten is een spel met
woorden en landschap. Je kunt wandelen zonder het
landschap te zien: je zit vast in en bent gericht op je
eigen 'woorden' en gedachten.
Soms dwingt het landschap je tot kijken: de natuur
verrast je en even hoef je niet aan je eigen woorden te
denken, maar kun je één zijn met wat je om je heen
ziet.

hun tractor. Gewroet onder de aarde, in de aarde,
boven de aarde. De hele beweging constant in
beweging.

you allow the calmness, you become aware that
everything is moving. Bee colonies buzzing collect
their nectar out of the richness of the flowers.

Some points...

Greengroup
We should take care on the Japanse Duizendknoop (Fallopia
japonica; Japanese Knotweed). This plant becomes two
metres high and pushes away all other plants. Besides, it
grows very fast. If you have the Japanse Duizendknoop in
your garden, dug it out and put it in the normal garbage and
not on the compostheap. It is important to immediately
remove the plant when it is still small.
The green group doesn’t like people who work on the general
green area without consulting the green group first: there is a
reason why things are planned. For example, the recent
spontaneous pollarding ('knotten') of the trees around the field was done in a bad way (harmful for the trees)
and there was no plan what to do with the remains.
Free running animals
Some people have trouble with free running dogs and their dropping sin their garden. Also the cats, rabbits
and chicken don’t like them. Everyone agrees that dogs are only allowed to run if they are supervised by their
owner, so the new Droevendaal rule is: be really careful with letting your dog running around unattended. It
is not suppose to be in that way.
Plastic waste
Barbara (from Idealis) promised to have a look at the separation of plastics. So she did:
"The national government made appointments with the municipalities. Wageningen knows at the end of 2009
or at the beginning of 2010 when to start with separated plastic waste collection. If it starts, there will be
enough publicity about that. "
Inventory
Idealis will stop maintenance and replacement of their fridge and furnace on coming July 1st. So, if you want
them to be repaired, don't be lazy but organize it NOW!
Anyway, maybe Idealis wants to continue with the furnaces, so lets wait for that.
Samenvatting: Een paar dingen uit de laatste Droefvergadering
Groengroep: we moeten oppassen voor de Japanse Duizendknoop en graag niet zomaar wat gaan
snoeien in het openbaar groen.
Vrij lopende dieren: Honden dienen onder een zekere mate van controle van hun baasje (m/v) te zijn, en
worden niet geacht zomaar los rond te lopen. Dit is een nieuwe Droefregel.
Plastic afval: Barbara (van Idealis) heeft even nagekeken of we daar al iets mee kunnen: "De overheid heeft
hier met de gemeente afspraken over gemaakt, vorig jaar (2008). Wanneer Wageningen daadwerkelijk met
het gescheiden afval gaat beginnen is nog een vraag, eind dit jaar (2009) begin volgend jaar weten ze meer.
Maar daar zal een grote campagne aan besteed worden."
Inventaris: Idealis zal het onderhoud en vervanging van hun koelkast en fornuis in de barak stopzetten. SDus
als je nog iets gerepareerd wilt hebben, wacht niet af maar organiseer het NU!
Er is trouwens een kans dat ze toch doorgaan met de gasfornuizen. Wordt vervolgd.
