Droevendalia!
In this issue, we have news about solar panels on the
common barrack, an introduction from the green group,
the sociology of Droevendaal and some news from long
ago about the Droevendaler of the year 2005, and many
other items!

Sociologie van Droef
“een quasi-anthropologisch document”
Na enige tijd op het landgoed Droef te hebben
verbleven, begon ik patronen te zien. Patronen in de
levensstijlen van droevies. Groepen en subgroepen,
afbakeningen van gedrag en een continuum van
hebbelijk, en onhebbelijkheden. Dit is een poging tot
een beschrijving daarvan..
De eco-hippie
Waar de goa-hippie het met uiterlijk vertoon doet,
komt de Eco-hippie met inhoud. Naar buiten toe zal de
eco-hippie wijzen op de zonnepanelen en de duurzame
bouw van droef. Onderscheid zich door zelf altijd
het licht achter zich uit te doen, de kranen dicht te
draaien en koud te douchen, en pleit tevens voor een
groter grijswatersysteem voor het huis. De ecohippie
maant zijn huisgenoten tot het kopen van biologische
spullen en eco-waspoeder. Verder is de ecohippie zeer
gesteld op een goede sfeer in huis; samen eten en nietkapitalistische spelletjes vind hij heel leuk.

Uiterlijk: ribfluwelen broek in pastelkleur, ‘s winters een
wollen trui
De Tuinder
de Tuinder, noest arbeidend om zijn huis te kunnen
voorzien van een vers blaadje sla en seizoensgroenten.
Met het plannen van de tuin, het maaien van het gras,
het schoffelen van een perkje of het duchtig snoeien
van boom- en struikwerk is de tuinder al gauw het
aanspreekpunt van een huis, wegens zijn buitenshuis- en
overduidelijk behorende bij het huis- activiteiten. Houdt
zich wel bezig met het milieu, maar niet overmatig.
Houdt buiten het tuin-seizoen, in de winter, wel van
gezelligheid, maar heeft absoluut soms wat tijd alleen
(in de tuin) nodig. Houdt van barbecuen en vuurstoken,
hoe groter, hoe beter.
De revolutionary-in-exile
Met deze revolutionair gaat het op droef veel beter
dan op andere plekken: de wereld is een verderfelijke
plaats en droef een fijn paradijs om heen te vluchten.
De revolutionair is vaak, doch niet altijd, muziekant,
politiek actief, afkomstig uit latijns-amerika of zuideuropa. Met zijn zelfverkozen verbanning naar droef wil
hij zich (mentaal) inzetten voor de community die hij
hier heeft aangetroffen. Naast de gitaar voor de nodige
kampvuurliederen is hij vaak ook een ander instrument
machtig. Is expert op een van de volgende onderdelen:
peak-oil, GM crops, slow food, anti-kernenergie,
Illuminati of politiegeweld. Is vies van handwerk.
Uiterlijk: jeans en blote bast (in tuinseizoen).
De wetenschappelijke literatuur is het er niet over eens
of de Tuinder een (HET) archetype van een droevie is,
maar er zijn aanwijzingen voor
Uiterlijk: polo en een zonnebril (soms een Che baard)
Het stelletje
In eerste instantie lijkt het Stelletje niet een aparte
categorie, bedenk maar: iedere combinatie van
droevies is mogelijk, en dat levert weer allerlei aparte
subcombinaties op. Dat gezegd hebbende, is er wel
een kanttekening te maken bij het voorval van een
droef-stelletje. Het stelletje zorgt voor een merkbare
intensivering van contact tussen twee barakken. Beide
barakken komen vaker bij elkaar over de vloer, de
informatiestroom tussen de twee huizen gaat sneller.
Daarentegen wordt er wel vaker bij de een dan de ander
gegeten, dus een huis krijgt langzaam een 7e bewoner,
en het andere huis zakt een beetje naar 5,5 bewoners.
Huizen met daarin woonachtig een Stelletje trekken ook
sneller nog een Stelletje aan, op mysterieuze wijze.
De goa-hippie
de Goa-hippie, tezamen met de ecohippie, zijn erg
bepalend voor het droefbeeld naar buiten toe. In het
geval van de goa-hippie zijn het de lange dreads of de
half opgeknapte ‘shag-van’ die mensen de associatie
van Droef geven. De goa-hippie geeft of volgt cursussen
bongo en acrobatiek, en houdt van feestjes. veel
feestjes, tot laat. Een onvervalst feestbeest, de goahippie is maar wat blij als er iets ‘gemeenschappelijks’
droevie georganiseerd wordt. Voor een potluck haalt de
goa-hippie zijn beste coke-skills uit de kast. Is vaak de
creatieve factor in huis, via de goa-hippie kom je ook op
illegale feesten in gekraakte panden in de buurt.
Uiterlijk: dreads en meerdere piercings (kunnen overal
zitten)

De sportfanaat
De Sportfanaat is een buitencategorie op droef, niet
alleen omdat wielrennen (vaak) favoriet is, maar
ook omdat het over het algemeen buitensporten
betreft. Ongeacht welke sport het is, van voetbal
tot bergbeklimmen tot basketbal tot knotsbal, de
Sportfanaat wordt fanatiek als hij bezig is. Meestal weet
hij zijn huisgenoten nog wel mee te krijgen om een
rondje te hardlopen. Moet en zal Voetbal, de Tour de
France en de Tour de Droef volgen (of winnen). Als het
koud weer is haalt hij als eerste de schaatsen uit het
vet. Een sportfanaat let niet zo op zijn waterverbruik
als hij ‘s avonds na het sporten voor een tweede keer op
een dag douched.
Uiterlijk: strakke Tshirts en hippe, snelle schoenen
De theeleut-annex-spellennerd
De Theeleut komt al vrij gauw even langs de buren
zetten om een praatje te maken, daar is niet veel
excuus voor nodig (of uberhaupt). Is zeer gesteld op
gezelligheid, een kampvuurtje of een feestje. Zal altijd
aan komen waaien voor een droef-gelegenheid. De
theeleut is bij uitstek ‘s avonds actief, om na het eten
een bordspelletje te doen. De subcategorie spellennerd
bezit een uitgebreide collectie en zet zijn gasten
iedere keer weer een nieuwe regelset voor. De Theeleut
organiseert ook dinertjes, of anderszins leuke avondjes
-die niet een groot stampend feest zijn, maar waar wel
lekker veel mensen gezellig komen.
Uiterlijk: losse Tshirts of blouses, al dan niet met rok.

De arty-farty
de Arty-farty sluit de rangen. Houdt zijn huis op de
hoogte van welke toneelvoorstellingen, Roomservices,
bandjesoptredens er zijn, of hij in meedoet. Neemt
altijd de filmladder van Movie W, Heerenstraattheater
of Cinemec mee. Download de moeilijke filmhuisfilms,
thematische video’s voor ecologische debatavonden, of
de nieuwste hipste HBO serie. Zit in twee a drie bandjes
waarvan een ‘droef-only’ speelt, met het Droeffeest in
september. Gaat regelmatig naar de grote stad voor een
echt goeie voorstelling, maar doet ook amateurtoneel,
waar de huisgenoten naar mee moeten.
Uiterlijk: bril met dikke zwarte randen.

Interview with Pia (31)

Living on a special place like Droevendaal brings
responsibilities. One of those is being a research
object. In 2011, Austrian student Pia Ferner observed
our behavior and thoughts for a master thesis
“Cultural anthropology and european ethology”. As
she is still living with as (doing a second master at
WUR), it’s time for some counter-observation.
Did you encounter special things when doing your
research?
“Some people have no clue about the history of this
place, and are very convinced about alternative stories.
I heard tales about a former military base, an old
holiday park, shelters for refugees that were squatted
etc.. Perhaps people have a need to explain the current
situation: they make up stories anyway. Not so many
people seem to know that it was rebuilt from a quite
similar previous student housing.
What is your connection to Droevendaal anyway?
“Because my boyfriend, now ex-boyfriend, lived here,
I visited this place regularly. To me it looked “exotic”,
just different from regular student housing, with plenty
of space for a garden, animals or other experiments. I
was also unfamiliar with the concept of choosing your
own housemates outside the private housing market. So,
investigating Droevendaal became one of my possible
thesis topics, and turned out to be my supervisors’
favorite. Also because of the place it’s history and the
way it evolved over time with the rebuild of the total
concept in the year 2000.”
I also met “free spirits”, people who don’t like
restrictions, especially on certain issues, like parking
along the road (apparently a long-lasting issue) or when
it comes to parties. That’s a bit a double thing: Idealis
is sometimes considered as an outside, restricting force;
you might forget that they are actually the owner of
this place and people are sometimes not aware that
they try to act in the interest of the Droevendalers. But
if something is broken, you call them and they repair it
within a few days – at that moment we enjoy a smoothly
working organization. I think Barbara, as Idealis
contact person, is doing a nice job. She is flexible and
understands Droevendalers. In general, I think that we
get quite some value-for-money at this place. It’s a pity
that there are no more of these projects.”
What did you exactly research?
“First, the motivation of people. Why do they choose to
live here, what are their expectations and experiences?
I conducted open interviews with Droevendalers, the
Droevendaal mayor Patrick Jansen from around 1998
and with Barbara from Idealis. And I used data from an
enquiry and read some additional documents.
How is it to live here at this moment?
“Now that I am living here to study at WUR, I
experience that I actually behave myself in ways I
previously observed with others - what e.g. puzzled
me back than was a lack of involvement in communal
activities from quite some people. But now that I live
here I am also mainly focused on what happens in my
own house. Right now we have a very nice atmosphere
in the house, doing quite a lot of things together besides
shared dinners, also going on trips together etc. As a
smaller unit, my house is nice and almost complete by
itself. None of us really takes part in bigger Droevendaal
activities. Perhaps, this happens also because our
garden is physically quite separated from the rest of
Droevendaal: we literally don’t see that many others. I
did meet a lot more other people when I conducted my
research: and the nice thing is that I still see some faces
from that period around.
Secondly, I did literature research about other existing
housing concepts, especially the ‘living together
ideas’ that did come up in the 60/70-ties and have
evolved since. For example the ‘Centraal Wonen’/
Cohousing ideas. Different elements from different
concepts of student and alternative living come back in
Droevendaal. However, what is very determining about
especially student housing is the temporal aspect as
well as economic constraints in the choice of living.“
And did you find out why people would like to live on
Droevendaal?
“Social aspects, including having a garden together
and choosing your own housemates with whom you
can share dinners. For some also the broader sense of
community plays an important role. Also the space, the
nature around, which is often connected to the idea of
freedom and less restrictions, conducting little projects,
for example with keeping animals. What outsiders often
don’t realize is that all houses are very different. Do
you, as new Droevendaler, fit into the group? With the
cooptation system, where the group chooses for you
and you for the group, it is possible to find the best fit.
People like that possibility very much.”
And, finally: have you experienced how others see
Droevendaal?
“Sometimes it happens to come up in conversations with
others. Many fellow-students see Droevendaal and its
inhabitants as a “bunch of hippies”, and, if I tell that
I live here too, I am considered a hippie as well. That
image is still in the mind, and it’s incorrect for most of

us. As I said, outsiders often don’t realize that every
house is different with its own character, how people
maintain and use the garden, how they live together
etc. etc.
A few weeks ago my house was visited by a video-crew
to do a project on student life in Wageningen for the
university. They wanted us to sit around the campfire,
playing guitar and lighting sparkling candles. It was
just funny to see how those people were not really
interested in who we actually are: they just wanted
their existing stereotype confirmed and create their own
picture of it.”

News from the Green Group

flowers, ditches and ponds overgrown by interesting
water plants, shrubberies and bushes are housing many
birds and insects, gardens have compost heaps where
hedgehogs like to wander around and the abundant
wood walls shelter a variety of solitary bees, beetles,
and other creatures.
In spring a new year started for the Green Group
Happy summer! What could be a more appropriate
start for this short ´Green Group´ contribution. After
a seemingly never ending winter Droef has turned back
to its beautifully green appearance which we all love
so much. The frogs have reemerged from their winter
sleep, blackcaps and willow warblers are back from
Africa filling the still morning air with their excited
chorus, the first house sparrows have fledged from their
nest and you may have noticed the first orange tips
(Anthocharis cardamines) fluttering through our gardens.
Basically, we have this rich nature around us because
the Droef citizens and Idealis chose to give nature
space when building Droevendaal, diversify it through
a mosaic of management types and especially because
Droevendaalers like to boost these natural values
through actively helping maintaining it and adding nice
elements themselves: wood walls, shrubby and wild
gardens, a variation of crops,….
Yes, Droef is a hell of a little paradise to be, and anyone
who likes to help to keep it that way is invited to get
their hands dirty with the Green Group! In this article
we want to inform you, and especially those of you who
are new to Droevendaal, to what exactly the Green
Group does, who we are and how you can bring your
skills to the (garden) table.
For a small place like Droevendaal, “pattern
management” is necessary, meaning that – in order to
protect and ameliorate the natural values of Droef – we
have to actively work in our nature: keep grasslands
open, knot willow trees, cut back shrubs, clear ponds
from time to time, compost organic matter excesses,
etcetera. A lot of this is done by the gardeners
appointed to this task by Idealis, but to reduce costs and
because we like to shape Droef nature partly ourselves,
we also take up some tasks with the Droef citizens. The
Green Group is there to organize this.
In short, the Green Group tasks range from discussing
ideas about how to manage our marvelous green
environment and serving as a communication portal
about ´green affairs´ between our Droef community,
Idealis and the ecological gardeners. Finally we organize
the so-called ´Green Work days´ where you can all help
out to conserve Droefs precious greenery . The 4th of
May the first Green Work Day of the year took place
and those who were present got a good impression
of the diversity of tasks that fall under Green Group
management such as managing the collective compost
heaps, combatting invasive aliens (see also further) and
general maintenance tasks.
What can we do?
Like Gilles (former green grouper) wrote: “Droef is
what you want it to be”. Of course, for green issues,
some continuity in what we do is necessary. Therefore,
there is a long-term “green plan” for Droevendaal, set
up around 2000 and revisited in 2011, outlining the
landscape goals and associated management types of
different parts of Droef. Within this framework, there is
quite some space for creative ideas.
The Green Group has long been an active one,
passionately shaping our green environment and
motivating people to participate in this. Stefan
(55), Gilles and Henk (Koffiebarak) represented the
committee. Afterward, Stefan (55) and Roeland (47)
continued the main tasks and since this year Wouter
(99), Paul (65) and Djoerd (65) have joined the
committee. With the Green Group back to strength we
aim to engage as many of you as we can to contribute to
the quality of our marvelous green living environment in
various ways, big or small!
This spring, during several Green Work Days we
managed to mobilize a dozen or so Droevendaalers who
got the com of compact back into compost by removing
large branches and rebuilding the heaps at house 65
and at the bicycle path in Droefs southeastern corner.
Furthermore we spent some time eradicating Japanese
Knotweed, a clonally reproducing invasive plant species
that forms a threat to our native vegetation, in three
hotspots at the south side of Droevendaal and a few
more benches were constructed alongside the road with
wood from last year’s logging works. With some beers,
a delicious cup of soup at lunchtime and some good
company the working day was a great success which we
hope to repeat several times more in 2013!
Droevendaalian green vision
By now we hardly need to point out anymore that
Droevendaal harbors an abundance of wildlife and
plants which are worth taking care of by keeping
things strategically messy. Although you might not have
realized, there is logic behind the madness in some
places. Verges on the roadside are harboring many

Furthermore, the Green Group also welcomes input
from the artistic ones among you. On the last meeting
of the Groen Groep committee we decided to invest
more in dissemination of information towards you, the
Droevendaal community. This includes informative flyers
about how to combat invasive exotic plant species, but
perhaps even species profiles, information boards or
other material that can maintain the awareness about
Droevendaals nature and its management, especially
among newcomers.
So what is going on now?
Can´t wait to get busy? Good! Keep that motivation. We
will announce the next Green Work Day on your window
as soon as possible. In the mean time, there are some
important points which we would like to highlight here:

The mowing season has started en will continue
throughout the summer (every 2-3 weeks). Please
remove all objects from the verges so the gardeners can
work efficiently! Pay special attention to small metal
objects which could damage the blades of the mowers.

Woody walls and constructions: these can - in
principle - only be built in your own yard. If you want to
avoid to see your hard work removed by Idealis then ask
the Green Group people if they want to shortcut your
plan with Idealis.

We have two large compost piles on Droef, to
the west and to the east. We will be placing information
panels indicating what you should (not) do in order to
keep de composting process going. In the future we will
communicate when the compost is ready to be used.

In the woody verges along droef quite a lot of
trees have been cut over the past two years. Coming
winter the last round of cuts of large trees will take
place along the back yards near houses 87 till 95 and in
the north near 81 till 53. The purpose of these cuts is amongst other things - allowing more light to reach the
shrubs in the undergrowth. This means that in few years
the visibility will again be limited, which is nice news
especially for those living in the south of Droevendaal.

In order to limit the spread of invasive species
such as Japanese Knotweed (Fallopia japonica),
and of the harmful Giant Hogweed (Heracleum
mantegazzianum), we will provide you with detailed
information about how to combat them in your gardens
shortly.
More than green fingers …
Because of the huge variation of small nature elements,
Droef contains an impressive amount of biodiversity.
Many Droevendaalers are quite interested in one or
another group of organisms. You can now enter your
observations in a public excel sheet that was launched
by Roeland a year ago.
For any initiative regarding more standardized ways
of monitoring biodiversity on Droef, we’d like to hear
about your plans!

Solar panels at the CB

Droevendaal as community owns some money. To be
more exact: the yearly income is about €720 euro a
year. This money is used for welcome packages, tools
like the chainsaw and brushcutter, food support for
greenworkdays, small support for other activities etc
etc.
Photovoltaic solar panels
Almost all barracks have solar panels for hot water.
This is a low-tech, relatively cheap system that
works well. Photovoltaic panels (PV) however
deliver electricity, are high-tech and quite
expensive. Perhaps because of the price, Idealis
seems reluctuant to use PV’s in general. Idealis
actually refused to have PV’s installed on top of a
new student building in Ede, despite an offer from
the formal owner (Woonstede).
As there is currently a surplus of money, we asked
Idealis in May 2011 to place photovoltaic (PV) solar
panels on the south facing roof of the Common Barrack.
Droevendaal would pay all the costs: set-up as well as
maintenance and insurance for the coming 20 years.
As the Common Barrack houses a part of our internetinfrastructure, quite some electricity is consumed
continuously. With this solar panels, we would at
least during daytime generate the energy used by this
networkrouters. So, except for a few hours work to
make things happening, no costs for Idealis. Everybody
happy?
“Kafka’s writing has inspired the term
“Kafkaesque”, used to describe concepts and
situations reminiscent of his work, particularly
“Der Process” and “Die Verwandlung”. Examples
include instances in which people are overpowered
by bureaucracies, often in a surreal, nightmarish
milieu which evokes feelings of senselessness,
disorientation, and helplessness. Characters in
a Kafkaesque setting often lack a clear course

to real-life occurrences and situations that are

In practice, Idealis has many faces, and diverse ways of
working. In April 2013, I was invited for a meeting with
Idealis and an external advisor. They misunderstood the
initial question and put quite some time in a calculation
what would happen if all barracks on Droevendaal
would get PV’s. That would be too expensive (even with
subsidies), because:
• Relative to a normal household, we have a reduced
electricity price. So: with the same investment, you
save less money
• There are too many trees = shadow on Droevendaal.
For PV’s to be profitable, or even return during
their lifetime more energy than was used during
production, a ‘clear view’ on the sky is needed.

I repeated the first question: can we please, on our
own expenses, put PV’s on the CB, which happens to be
relatively clear of trees on the southside?
A few weeks ago I got the final answer: “No, that is not
possible. First, there has to be a policy. We don’t know
when that will happen. We are not going to support
separate actions outside a formal policy”.
So far. Any ideas for a guerilla PV-cation action..?

Begrijpen
Er zijn dingen waarnaar ik vurig snak. Een zeker
begrijpen van wat ik zie bijvoorbeeld. Daarbij praat ik
graag met mensen die dingen anders begrijpen dan ik,
want door dit andere begrijpen te contrasteren met
mijn eigen begrijpen, begrijp ik beter hoe ík de dingen
begrijp.
Een bepaald perspectief volgende, kan je aldus stellen
dat ik alleen in mezelf geïnteresseerd ben. Je kunt
evengoed stellen dat ik alleen in anderen geïnteresseerd
ben. Je kunt evengoed stellen dat ik en de anderen
een onlosmakelijk geheel vormen, toch wat betreft hun
onderwerp van interesse zijnde.
Je kunt nu het gevoel krijgen dat je mij begrijpt. In
zekere zin heeft dat natuurlijk te maken met jouw
gevoelens jegens mij. Je stelt je misschien ontvankelijk
op voor de beelden die ik hier schep…je helpt me bij het
scheppen ervan. Omdat je mij bijvoorbeeld graag ziet,
of omdat je mensen graag ziet die mij graag zien. We
verwarren liefde en vriendschap vaak met redelijkheid.
Droef festival 2013
Dear Droevendalian,
This year the municipality and police made clear again that a big party with a
central stage is only possible with security and traffic agents. Therefore it was
decided not to apply for a permit for such a central stage. However, a permit for
beverages and food is in consideration.
We hope we will have a nice party, with food on the field at the start of the evening
and a lot of garden/house parties. It would be cool to make a kind a small line-up
for the night, so please inform us and inform each other about your ideas. As a final
remark, make sure that you keep the party for friends of Droef only.
If you want to work on: food, deco, a performance on the field, EHBO, shirts, or
anything else that you think can be of use, please inform us.

Back in the old days...

Rosco hield van bier (dat feestgangers in zijn trog
deden), zijn zusje helemaal niet. Het was een echte
gangmaker: tijdens het Droeffeest van 2002, toen we
het podium naast het hok hadden zag je ‘m genieten
van de muziek.
Droevendaler van het Jaar: Rosco!
Wie was dit bijzondere hangbuikzwijn? En waarom krijgt
hij 14 stemmen? We hadden een diepgaand gesprek met
Frank van ‘53.
“Rosco was net als menig Droevendaler een underdog: in
dit geval altijd onder de plak van zijn zusje Boaluk. Zij
hield hem wel warm toen hij ziek was, en na zijn dood
was zij een paar dagen van slag. We zijn trouwens op
zoek naar een nieuw kameraadje voor haar.
Rosco kon wel eens los lopen, hij hield van de grote
eikenbomen bij 33 en 53 en vooral van de hazelaar bij
45. We hebben ‘m natuurlijk netjes meegegeven met
de kadaverdienst zoals dat wettelijk verplicht is, als
we dat niet gedaan zouden hebben dan hadden we hem
misschien wel begraven, en een stekje van de hazelaar
Rosco heeft bijna zijn hele leven op Droef gewoond,
hij is als biggetje gekomen. Hij is ongeveer 9 jaar
geworden. Afgezien van tijdens de nieuwbouw heeft hij
altijd op 53 gewoond; zijn zusje is nu de langstzittende
Moebarak-bewoner. Officieel waren het twee zwart
