the house
make yourself at home
This charming Edwardian-era countr y house, set
within beautifully landscaped grounds, is available
for hire on an exclusive basis. Lovingly restored
to its original splendour, this Oxfordshire gem
features nine bedrooms, three large reception
rooms, a handsome librar y and an intimate
wood-paneled study. Designed in the classical
Queen Anne-style, the house is an ideal setting to
celebrate your wedding.
The house is situated in open countr yside with
far-reaching views across towards Waddesdon.
And while the house may be situated in splendid
isolation, it is easily accessible from all directions.
Poundon is only a little over an hour away from
London and Birmingham by car ; just an hour away
from Heathrow airpor t; a mere ten mins from
Bicester Village outlet shopping centre; and the
culture and heritage of Oxford is only 30 minutes
away.

the house
a brief history
Poundon House was built in 1908 by the Etoneducated gentleman cricketer John HeywoodLonsdale as the perfect place to raise his growing
family and enjoy the countr y pursuits for which
the area is famed. The formal gardens, with a
Lime tree avenue, par terre, ornamental pond and
walled garden, were designed by the celebrated
landscape architect Thomas H Mawson.
The house remained as the Heywood-Lonsdale’s
family home until the outbreak of World War II,
when it was requisitioned by the government to
help with the war effor t . As well as housing two
families of London evacuees, the house was used
by Winston Churchill’s crack espionage unit, the
Special Operations Executive. It continued to be
used by the government during the Cold War
through until the late 1970s.
Then, after changing hands a couple of times, the
Roscoe family moved in and set about breathing
new life into the proper ty. They continued the
traditions of the Heywood-Lonsdales by filling the
house with family and festivities - not to mention
the hosting of some memorable par ties!

the house
a brief history
Three decades on, the house is still ver y much a
family home, with three generations of Roscoes
now living on the proper ty.
Poundon House thrives as an original turn-ofthe-centur y English countr y house. It is a perfect
example of the Queen Anne-style architectural
revival that was led by Norman Shaw in the late
19th centur y. The elegant exterior carries many
of the signature features of the English Baroque
period, while the sympathetically updated
interiors reflect the house’s passage through time
by conser ving the timeless and traditional and
blending it with the new.
Set within 10 acres of landscaped gardens - and
featuring a traditional stable block and yard the house stands imposing, yet not intimidating,
against the changing of the seasons. In autumn,
the house bears witness to the fecund har vesting
of the surrounding countr yside and the mellow
fruitfulness of laden hedgerows; in winter, roaring
log fires ward off frosts that paint the gardens; in
spring, the gardens blossom into life; and, come
summer, the swimming pool is available to create
the quintessential countr y weekend.

from london / oxford /birmingham
From London or Birmingham, take junction 9 off the M40. On the
roundabout above the motorway, head towards Bicester on the A41.
At the Esso roundabout, turn right – heading towards Aylesbur y. At
the next big roundabout, take the second left towards Launton. You
will then go straight over two small roundabouts, before turning right
at the third, signed ‘Launton village only’. In Launton, turn left opposite
The Bull Inn – this will be marked to Poundon. Go straight over at the
next cross roads, (about 1 mile) up the hill, past the ex-militar y radio
station, (about 2miles) and we are the first house in Poundon, on the
right with black gates and a lime tree avenue.
It may be advisable to avoid the M40 exit to Bicester as you may be
caught in ‘Bicester Village’ shopping traffic. If you wish you may exit
the M40 at a junction earlier from either direction and head across
countr y.
from buckingham / milton keynes
On the Buckingham / Brackley ring road, follow signs to Gawcott. Continue into Gawcott and turn left at the T-junction, signed towards Marsh
Gibbon / Twyford. Continue until you pass the Seven Stars (about 5
miles) on your right, where you then take the next right to Twyford.
You cross a railway bridge and then turn right into Twyford. Continue
straight through Twyford, then about 2 miles on turn right towards
Poundon Take the left by the ‘Sow and Pigs’ pub. Poundon House is the
last house on the left with black iron gates and lime tree avenue.

frequently asked questions
Can we come to the house before the wedding day
and dress the marquee and prepare the rooms?
We are happy for you to come any time after 8am
on the day before your wedding day – we know
how much there is to do in preparation for your
wedding and don’t want you to have to do it at
the last minute.
Can we leave things at the house after the Reception and collect the next day? Can guests collect
their cars the next day too?
Yes, this is not a problem. If possible, we prefer
you to come in the morning.
Can we hire other linings for the marquee, or additional marquee items?
We offer what is included in the price (as per
the booking form) and you can hire anything additional at your own expense, but if there is additional work for us, e.g. removing our lining, then
we would also have a charge, so it really is best
to keep up informed of your plans. Also, please
make sure we are aware of any deliveries that
might have to be super vised.
Is there a hi-fi we can use to play music on
the day in the reception rooms and for the
ceremony?
Yes. The use of a speaker for ceremony
music (iPod / iPhone connection provided)
is included free of charge. There is also a
PA system available (you can also plug in
an iPod), with 2 microphones for speeches
at a cost of £54. If you require anything
more specialist, you will have to arrange it
yourselves or ask us in advance. Poundon
House will not be available to co-ordinate
music on the day so please ask one of your
guests to help.
Can guests get changed at the house?
The house’s 2 dressing rooms are for the
bride and groom’s immediate family prior to the wedding. Extra rooms can be
booked in advance or a downstairs room
can be a shared changing room. Please
speak to us about your needs.

e n q u i r i es @ p o u n d o n h o u s e. c o m
Can we use the swimming pool?
No. Not on wedding days. The swimming pool
will be securely gated so as to avoid any accidents with children. Please be aware that it is
not heated.
Are children welcome?
Children are welcome at Poundon House. We do
ask that you have a designated person in charge
of them at all times as it is a large garden for them
to explore.
Can we use Confetti?
Confetti must be natural, any other type of confetti is not permitted.
What time must we finish by?
As Poundon House is located in a village, we request that guests respect those who live nearby
and therefore the loud music must finish at 11.00,
background music must finish be 11.30pm and
guests must depar t by midnight.

look around the venue prior to the day? Can we also
arrange a time to bring our parents?

same day. Please also look out for our open days
as they can be a good opper tunity to drop by.
Can we have a pre wedding shoot with our photographer prior to the wedding day?
Yes, but please be aware weekends are ver y busy
in the summer.
After we have decided to go ahead and use Poundon,
what happens next?
Do you need any other info from us in the
run up to the big day?

or flares?
We require a schedule closer to the day,
that states your timings for the day, your
suppliers (including any deliveries). as well
a list of names of all your guests that are
attending both the Ceremony and Reception.
No, we do not allow fireworks, Chinese lanterns,

throughout the evening?
