Focus on Families - Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City
news, stories and insights from ronald mcdonald house charities of kansas city — fall 2008 Focus on Families We’re all different shapes and sizes. This is especially true of children. Just look at a youth soccer or baseball team and you’ll notice there’s no one “standard” size for that age group. Who would’ve thought that a little tummy sticking out was cause for immediate concern? But coupled with constant fatigue, this can be a red flag for a pediatrician. This is exactly what happened to 8-year-old Victoria. In September 2007, Victoria was diagnosed with neuroblasto cancer. While she was being admitted to Children’s Mercy Hospital, the Red Cross was flying her father home from Afghanistan. He has since been able to stay stateside so that he can help take care of Victoria, her mom and two younger sisters. Prior to staying at Ronald McDonald House, Victoria’s mom, Jennifer, had heard of RMHC through a friend because of their local Pop Tab program. Other than that, Victoria’s family didn’t know what to expect. They’ve come to consider the House as their “Kansas City home” off and on over the last year. Victoria enjoys playing with her sisters, loves drawing, painting and crafts. In spite of the chemo, Victoria is full of energy and will quickly bring a smile to your face. “Words just can’t express how grateful we are for the delicious meals provided by the community, the many friends we’ve made and for everyone’s support,” said Jennifer. “It’s nice to come home to prepared meals and have access to laundry facilities.” Reaching for food in the refrigerator or being able to throw in a load of laundry is normally taken for granted. But it’s these little things that provide much-needed help to the families staying at the House because they allow them to focus on taking care of their medically fragile child and provide some normalcy to the family. Victoria is currently undergoing her third round of chemo. All her friends at Ronald McDonald House Charities wish her well. Thank you to our many RMHC friends for your continued support and generosity. Because of you, we’re able to serve families like Victoria’s and help provide hope. www.rmhckc.org 816.842.8321 In Loving Memory: June ’08 Ronald McDonald House extends its deepest sympathy to the families of these very special children we served from July ‘07 through June ‘08. From the Long ago I became inspired by the mission, community involvement and partnership teaming of Ronald McDonald House Charities. I’m therefore thrilled and honored to join Ronald McDonald House Charities as the new CEO/ Executive Director. Much of my career has been dedicated to working Holly Buckendahl, in community-based organizations providing CEO/Executive Director services striving to meet the healthcare and support needs of adults, children and families. I’m excited to continue on this path by working among an incredible RMHC team of individuals as we preserve our rich history and continue to meet the evolving needs of children and families who stay with us at our Houses and Family Room. During my first few months, I’ve met many extraordinary people. It’s heartwarming to watch so many work collaboratively to bring together valuable resources and support to provide housing, home-cooked meals, family enrichment activities, respite, transportation and more for the many families who stay with us. I’m grateful to McDonald’s Corporation, the many McDonald’s owners/operators, their families and Give a Hand ® The average length of stay for each family has grown from 9 to 13 nights, which means our Houses are operating at full capacity. Please mark your calendars for November 10-20 to give Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City a hand. Each November, we participate in the global Ronald McDonald House Charities fundraising campaign – World Children’s Day. With your help, much-needed funds can be raised to benefit the many medically fragile children and families that we serve each year. We are currently on pace to serve more than 2,200 families. While visiting your favorite McDonald’s restaurant, you can “give us a hand” by making a $1 donation. It’s astounding how fast small donations can add up! Last year we raised over $60,000 and this year our goal is $65,000. We rely on our community’s generosity to help make RMHC available to the thousands of families that need us. Thank you for your continued support! Heart of the House… Fall 2008 staff members who for the past 29 years have provided both financial support and valuable time to help us make our Houses and Family Room a “home away from home.” In 2008, we are on track to serve roughly 2,200 families at our two Houses, and the Family Room will provide services for over 4,000 families as well as log over 40,000 visits through its doors. On behalf of those we serve, I thank you for your trust, continued support and generosity as we work together to reduce the burden of childhood illness and injury for children and families. Without you, we couldn’t serve the many families that need us during trying times. It’s been a privilege to have gotten to know many of you, and I look forward to a future of meeting many more! Dear House Warmers, Cooks for Kids and Work Group Volunteers, Summer is coming to an end and fall is fast approaching. Ronald McDonald House Charities is serving more families than ever, and with your continued support we will serve even more in 2009. House Volunteers are still needed in a variety of shifts at both Houses and the Family Room. Be sure to get on our calendar for preparing a meal. Special and wonderful — that’s what you are! — author unknown 3 Friends of the House The Fun Friends celebrated summer on July 30th at the House. This kids’ membership is devoted to helping brighten the lives of other kids that are staying at the House. On the 30th, the Fun Friends ate lunch with Ronald McDonald and gathered to make lots of “Birthday in a Box” gifts. The boxes were filled with cake mix, frosting, candles, themed plates, napkins, cups, party favors and a gift. When a child has to be at the House over his/her birthday, they can pick out a box and have a party ready to go. Our Fun Friends learned about compassion, giving and helping kids in need. As one grandmother wrote to us, “What a great experience for my grandchildren. I was thrilled Emily understood she was doing something for somebody else who wasn’t as lucky as she is right now.” To become a Friend or learn more about Friends of the House, visit our website at www.rmhckc.org 4 Work and Meal Groups 1st Presbyterian Church of North Kansas City 810 Zone Abby’s Run for the Heart Adams Dairy Bank Adrian R-III School Anna & Nicky Alfonsin Alpha Delta Kappa – Kansas Alpha Gamma Chapter Alpha Delta Pi Alpha Delta Pi – Delta Phi Chapter Alpha Delta Pi – Greater Kansas City Parent’s Club Alpha Delta Pi – Theta Alpha Chapter Alpha Delta Pi UMKC Alpha Phi Omega UMKC Alpha Sigma Alpha Ambassador Steel Ambius Inc. Many of the families are life-flighted to Kansas City or are without access to a vehicle while they are staying at one of the Houses. Although many families are able to walk to Children’s Mercy Hospital, there are also a lot of children who are treated by other area hospitals including Saint Luke’s, the Rehabilitation Institute and KU Medical Center, and need transportation to get to their appointments, treatments and therapies. LZCZZYNdjg=Zae September 1 through December 31, RMHC is calling on your company, organization or school to help! Our goal is to raise $25,000 to support the families’ transportation costs and get them to their appointments on time. >iÉh:VhnVh&"'"(id=Zae &# Your company, organization or school can hold a fundraiser or make a donation. Auction & Golf Recap Thank you very much to all of our friends who came out to support the families served by RMHC and contributed to the success of the 2008 Ronald McDonald House Charities Red Shoe Shindig Auction and Golf Tournament. These events were the best yet because of all those who donated time, money, auction items, food and services. “The Red Shoe Shindig” was held at the InterContinental on the Country Club Plaza on Sunday, June 1. Thank you to all who contributed towards the $58,000 that was raised through the Auction signature item — “Sponsor a Family”! We also had a record number of attendees this year — over 500 — and lots of red shoes! During the Golf Tournament at Blue Hills Country Club the next day, Mother Nature held off the rain as long as possible for the morning golfers and then provided a break in the showers for the afternoon golfers. Thank you to all for being patient as we weathered out the morning storm. Golf and Auction 2008 Sponsors Anderson Property Development Co. LLC Aon Corporation The Bama Companies, Inc. Generous Gestures Estate planning is a delicate subject. It is very personal and intimately connected with preparing how to take care of loved ones and special interests dear to our hearts. Making a charitable planned gift does not have to be complicated, and anyone can make one, no matter the size of the estate. “The ultimate test of a person’s conscience may be his willingness to sacrifice something today for future generations whose words of thanks will not be heard.” – Gaylord Nelson Making a charitable planned gift can be as simple as a one-page codicil to an existing will to leave a bequest. Bequests allow you to make a future gift without concerns about outliving your resources. Bequest gifts can be a percentage of your estate, a specific dollar amount, or a residual amount (remainder) of your estate once other beneficiaries and needs have been taken care of. Please remember, however, to consult an attorney to assure that your will or codicil is written in the proper legal language. Please feel free to contact Anne Dykes about bequests or other planned giving opportunities. You can reach Anne at [email protected] or 816.842.8321 ext. 151. You may also use the reply coupon below, and Anne will be pleased to get in touch with you. M Please send me more information about opportunities for making a planned gift to RMHC Kansas City.
