Dec 6, 1962 Dear folks, It's Thursday - Debs Day Dinner - Mike leaves tonite - and its the end of one "phase" of busyness. I've entertained thrice for dinner in the last 4 days. Tim Black and vife (Pres of local NATC) on Sunday, Jay Miller on Tuesday and Sol and Judy Levy last night. Also had 4-5 guests in after dinner each of these nights to meet and talk with Mike. Very nice evenings and the whole business went smoothly. The kids were delights and they stayed out of the way once dqinner-time began (the younger two went to bed at 7:30, sat up reading and finally fell asleep, and Becky played quietly downstairs). Had manicotti one night, rolled stuffed flank steak another, and stuffed cabage last night. In each case they were prepared in advance and I managed it ala Pearl Willen so that when the guests arrived at 7:15 or so I could put the kids to bed and chat til we ate around 7:h5 to 8. Coffee was even ready and when the a after dinner guests arrived at 8 :30-9,te just moved on into the living room. Itm detailing ~i this becaase I feel pleased with rrself. Incidentally, the car coat has hit snggs. I couldn't find just want I wanted - even downtown;, that I really -- I did havesent home s like but it has a off-white interior fur and that bothers me (not fur, its a pile acyrlac) But I'm tempted anyway. -- it is a mistake I know. And fortunately since Fred can be such a pill about service, the waitering was perfect. Fred and kax Joe engaged in strange, complex, round-about and "deep" conversations about Fred's job situation, Joe's phobias, Fred s neuroses, etc. The two of them are both incredible for the kinds of conversations they sometimes seem to thrive on...but, strange to say I think in its way it was actually helpful to Fred. He finds these od& to me meaningless conversations - where one explores ones insides by creating various versions of tmQ, hypothesizing, exaggerating, underestimating, etc. a way of working through a problem in his mind. I find them difficult to listen to so he needs someone else to batter it out with. He is sometimes tempted to do so with the wrong peopleiL Poppa is a fine batterer since he is so accomplished at the same art - although F do not mean to imply they do it the same way or for the same purpose. Not at all. The similarity is simply that they utilize words to express things not literally conteaned in the words. (We all do this of course, but they more than most I think). 'ed is of course worried about the job situation. And of course I cannot really help at all. But I do believe it will work out. Of course there will be crises again after that. But strangely enough this period of tension for Fred has not spilled over into our marriage. It has perhaps spilled over a little into Fred's relations with the kids. But we have been very close and happy ourselves these lcst few months. It's a sort of "in love" period again. And am overcome sometimes with a terribly strong desire to get out of the rat race of this urban life of ours and find some different pattern. Its a new sensation for me. Wnat it is the harbinger of I'm not sure. But it makes me feel a stronger sense of identifcation and empathy for Fred, for my family and for the elements of our inner-family life. I'm tied to the "body-politic" hwever and incidenta ly, mamma, I found the Rostek peape on history and psychiatry fascinating in that it spoke so closely to me. The "stream of life" around me stimulates, excites and pleases me. It gives me mission, a sense of )great competence, it revives my xhKsEr enjoyment in the ab.. tract' ties a to the concrete. I enjoY the people, the intrigues and the busyness. And yet at the same time it wears be out periodically, and behind it sits a mocking me, laughing at the vanity and phoniness of it all. I got the article back from New Politics. Jacobson likes it, although he has serious reorganization suggestions which I think in some ways sound. It can't be used for this issue of theirs however since they have already had to cut out two pieces since it is already overlong. They'd like it for the next. But anyway I shall work on it and bring it East if I come or send it in about a week otherwise, along with the first draft of an attempted shorter piece. hat do you think about ommentary, mather than Aew Politics Of course that would require changes of u -RC 0 + some subostance but since NP is a quarterly3g-i provide a" mA chance of being able to write something longer than a Natiob-type article prior to next spring. If it is directed away from socialists, and a little less ambitious in wh.t it covers maybe it could be done. On another subject: Poppa promised Becky a watch for Xmas or Chunnakah. I do not necessarily think the idea a good one, but I feel very strongly that it should be carried through on now. The promise was decided, repeated and rerepeated. It is true that, in dad's presence, i modified it by saying that poppa would have to confer with gnandma about it. But on thinking about it afterwards I feel that is a very irrelevant modifier and that it would be a mistake for you and to her to get out of ii that way. Watches can be bought very cheaply, and kids her age do apparently often get them (two of her best pals got them for their last birthdays and at least one ill get one for Xmas I happen to knv). But if you feel, mamma, that you do not wish to -- since you already made out your list--let me know because 1 shall then do so myself. If you do then perhaps you can drop the other gifts. Let me know however. I hope to hear by tomorrow or so on the National Committee business....but you c uld check the SP office yourselves to get the latest. All is well with the new car. The old car will be gone soon - we HOPE. The garangemen are not optimistic about what we will get for it.... they even seem to think $500 is high. Ing general I dught to be doing more reading these days nonfiction type that is. But it was especially gunny that two of the magazines you've sent have included articles by an historian named Loren Baritz (an rticle on Jewishness in Commentary and on the Historian as Playwright in the Nation). His name was given us by the owners of the establishment we went to in Maine last summer le is a frequenterof thecottage ve stayed in for some 5-6 and has gone there every summer but last She years. Shet/asked me if I knew him and i said no. said he wa4 going to Chicago this year and would I look him up.
