PRAISING GOD
GRACES US TO LIVE
AND LOVE AGAIN
While visiting the 9/11 Memorial in New York City, our 90 SMM Seniors and I
witnessed the tragedy of evil and the sacrificial spirit of the rescue workers who
brought the healing power of Jesus. In 2001, the horror of terrorism became visible
when I visited Miriam Horrocks, the wife of Michael, who was the co-pilot in the
second plane to hit the tower. With two little children she experienced the horror
of killing innocent human life. The whole world felt her pain. Celebrating Mass
for Michael and his family moved all of us to prayer, compassion and personal
examination of how quickly our life can fall apart.
Leprosy is a deadly disease and separates us from our loved ones. A pagan leper
is healed because he trusted in the man of God, the prophet Elisha. Ten lepers are
physically healed by Jesus, but only the pagan Samaritan follows his heart and comes
back praising and thanking Him. Jesus approves of a grateful heart, telling the healed
man that his faith, expressed by praise and thanksgiving (Lk 17:15, 18), has been his
salvation (Lk 17:19). Jesus also asks the whereabouts of the other nine men (Lk 17:17).
Could He be asking the same question of the congregation in our Mass today?
Are most people in our congregation simply fulfilling their Sunday obligation to
obey the Church? Are many in our parish attending Mass on “auto-pilot” to mechanically “pray, pay, and obey”? Jesus works many healings through reception of the
Eucharist, so attending Mass is always a worthy act, even if done mechanically. The
word Eucharist means “thanksgiving.” Continue to obey the Lord and His Church,
but do so with gladness, praise and thanksgiving. Prostrate yourself before the Lord
and thank Him in Adoration.
Miriam Horrocks overcame her loss because she continued to pray, hope and
accept God’s mercy. Her faith enabled to believe that Michael was spending his
heaven encouraging and interceding for her and his children. Her grateful heart led
her to marry Paul Eisenberg, who became widower with two children. Coming to
Jesus healed them and empowered them to grow in accept God’s will and live it with
a joyful heart.
The narrator during the 9/11 film, Rebirth of a Nation, proclaimed: “We cannot
predict when tragedy and terrorism will strike, but like our rescue workers, we must
be vigilant and prepared.” If you want to overcome your fears, then begin to praise
God for His mercy and thank Jesus for your blessings. Do you believe that at each
Mass, Jesus sacrifices himself for you and me just as the rescue workers sacrificed
themselves on 9-11? Are we vigilant of the presence of God in our words and
actions each day? Are you creating a bit of heaven on earth?

TODAY’S GOSPEL
Read: Luke 17:11-19
“Has none but his foreigner returned to give thanks
to God?”
When we pray and ask God for the things we need, that’s a genu
parts. The second act of faith is being grateful for what we already
have and for what we receive in the future. Whatever that may be.
All ten lepers show faith enough in Jesus to ask him for a healing.
It’s pretty amazing that they believed Jesus could do what no
doctor had been able to do. But only one of them completes the
circle of faith by returning to thank Jesus for what is done for him.
As usual, he’s the least likely one to do so: a Samaritan outsider.
So while everyone walks away a winner here-the healing of
the other mine isn’t reversed- only the Samaritan is saved in a
deeper, more permanent way. Saying “thank you” to God is not
an afterthought or an option. It’s the other side of asking. It’s

A LAUGH WITH THE PASTOR
Good for the Soul: A little girl was sitting on her Grandmother’s lap as
she read her a bedtime story. From time to time, she would take her
eyes off the book and reach up to touch her wrinkled cheek. She was
alternately stroking her own cheek, then hers again. Finally she spoke
up, “Grandma, did God make you? “ “Yes, sweetheart,“ she answered.
“God made me a long time ago.” “Oh,” she paused, “Grandma,
did God make me too?” “Yes, indeed, honey, “she said, “God made
you just a little while ago.” Feeling their respective faces again, she
observed, “God’s getting better at it, isn’t he?”
