Summer 2014 - Saint Elizabeth Community
Saint Elizabeth Community Where RI seniors come first News SUMMER 2014 Saint Elizabeth Home Recognized in Palliative Care Collaborative Saint Elizabeth Home received the “Gold Award” for excellent engagement after participating in the Nursing Home Palliative Care Collaborative of Rhode Island. The collaborative began its work last August as a partnership between Healthcentric Advisors and nursing home facilities, with the goal of improving the quality of palliative care services. The collaborative focused on advanced care planning and identifying proxy decision makers, pain assessment, discussion of resident prognosis, discussion of resident goals, and access to spiritual care. Palliative care is specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses. It focuses on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain, and stress of a serious illness - whatever the diagnosis. The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family. the areas of medication reduction, pain management, uninterrupted sleep, and Saint Elizabeth Home palliative care team: (holding Gold Award l-r) Andrea Smith, R.N., DNS, Lisa Lavigne, R.N., (standing l-r) Wendy Rocha,R.N., evening activities. Robots for one! Saint Elizabeth Home is working with Brown’s Computer Science School as they trial “Beam,” a “robot” that can move through the building being driven remotely, and allow for communication from the end user to individuals in Saint Elizabeth Home. The goal is to see if this technology could enhance care. “We are in the very beginning stages of this trial, and hope to explore the use of this technology and see if there are any potential benefits for those in our care,” says Matt Trimble, Administrator. Chad Jenkins, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, Brown University, with “Beam,”a Robot Telepresence Additionally, Saint Elizabeth Court is participating in a program funded by a grant to Brown from Tufts Health Plan Foundation that is looking at enhanced nutrition, education, and physical activities and how these could benefit residents. The assessment part of the program was completed early this summer and now the interventions are being developed and introduced to some assisted living residents at Saint Elizabeth Court. “We are fortunate to have been asked by Brown University to partner on both of these initiatives,” says Steven J. Horowitz, President and CEO of Saint Elizabeth Community, “and look forward to seeing the results of both projects.” www.facebook.com/SaintElizabethCommunity www.stelizabethcommunity.org Saint Elizabeth Community is a not for profit 501(c)(3), charitable organization Saint Elizabeth Communityisisaanot-for-profit not for profit 501(c)(3), 501(c)(3), charitable Saint Elizabeth Community charitableorganization organization SEC Notes Dear Friends: initiatives with Brown University and with a startup company called Nordic Technologies (see front page I hope you are enjoying this and SEC Meeting Needs page). Nordic Technology has developed software that uses 3-D motion sensors to identify possible falls and alert caregivers to changes in patients’ behavior and has installed sensors in several Saint Elizabeth Court apartments. In the event of movement that appears to be a fall, an alert goes directly to the caregivers’ pagers in the building, alerting staff promptly. Ostina Soares, 88, says, “I am lucky to have it (the sensor) in my room.” She volunteered to participate, and although thankfully she has not had a fall, if she did, staff would be alerted right away. By participating in the voluntary test of this product, Saint Elizabeth Court benefits from being alerted to falls that the sensors detect, and helps Nordic Technology refine its technology for seniors everywhere. Co-founded by Erik Wernevi and Josh Napoli, Providence-based Nordic Technology was named the top winner in the 2014 Rhode Island Business Plan Competition. “With our 3-D motion sensors and unique software, we are able to detect falls and similar incidents without a person wearing any device,” said Wernevi, CEO of Nordic Technology. “Even if someone is unconscious or can’t press the alarm, they will get timely help.” For more information about Nordic Technology or how to test the product, contact Erik Wernevi at (650) 892-8339 or [email protected]. Alzheimer’s & Dementia Support Group Offered at Saint Elizabeth Home The bonds formed among family members whose loved ones live in a long term care residence are often very strong. Both Sandra Zakrison and Mary Lou Scott had parents in the memory care wing at Saint Elizabeth Home in the 1990’s and now they help facilitate the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Support Group there. After their parents passed they continued their relationship with Saint Elizabeth Community as committed volunteers. Explains Sandy, “Saint E’s took really good care of my mom and it’s the least I can do to help out.” The new Alzheimer’s & Dementia Support Group meets monthly in the Home’s coffee shop from 6-8 pm (days n CORNERSTONE ADULT SERVICES, INC. Adult day centers vary), providing family members, friends and loved ones of residents with dementia an opportunity to meet and support one another on their journey. “The caregivers participating have loved ones in different stages of the disease,” says Mary Lou Scott, “and have been a great resource for one another. The group gives them the chance to share with others facing similar issues.” Janelle Hackett, Nurse Manager of Saint Elizabeth Home’s memory care unit says “The first meeting went so well.” She received grateful calls and emails from those who attended, and continues, “I am so appreciative of our volunteers whom give their time and insight; it is comforting to know that others are facing similar situations and emotions.” New members are always welcome!
