Awaiting the Title Bout
By Jay Butynski, Greenfield Recorder, 8/2/11
Turners Falls native Sonya Lamonakis will
again get a chance to show why she puts the power
in Powertown.
Lamonakis will fight her sixth career
professional boxing on match Aug. 20, when she
returns to the site where it all began — Mechanics
Hall in Worcester.
The women’s heavyweight boxer turned pro
one year ago. Since that time, it’s been nothing but
good fortune. After signing with promoter Lou
DiBella last spring, Lamonakis stepped into the ring
in June 2010 for her professional debut at
Mechanics Hall, where she scored big with a
second-round knockout over Kasondra Hardnett.
Over her next four fights she proved that first win
was no fluke, dominating opponents to keep her
record flawless at 5-0.
The Scholar — as she is known in the ring
— now heads back to Worcester to fight in front of
her hometown fans. And if history serves her well,
she should be moving that record to 6-0. Lamonakis
will take on Tiffany “The Terminator” Woodard,
who she defeated by unanimous decision back on
Dec. 1 at BB King in New York.
Lamonakis admitted that she was hoping to
get into a title fight this time around and earn the
shot at her first professional belt. According to the
boxer, the problem is that the heavyweight division
is not the most popular in women’s boxing and a
number of top females don’t want to fight the upand-coming Lamonakis.
“Truthfully, I’m a little disappointed that it’s
not a title fight,” she said on Friday when the fight
was announced. “It’s just hard for me to find girls to
fight. Girls are leaving the weight class because
they don’t want to fight me. But I’m going to keep
plugging away and hopefully I’ll get that chance.”
That shot may come in January at Madison
Square Garden in New York City, where DiBella is
currently trying to put together an entirely female
card that would be headlined by Lamonakis. For
now, however, she is looking forward to taking on
Woodard and finally getting back into the ring after
a nearly four-month hiatus. In her most recent fight
Lamonakis earned a unanimous decision victory
over Gigi Jackson at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods
in Mashantucket, Conn. That was supposed to lead
her to a title fight, but as I said, the top women’s
heavyweights are ducking her. Case in point is
Gwendolyn O’Neil, who trains out of the same
gymnasium as Lamonakis (Gleason’s Gym in
Brooklyn, N.Y.) and recently held the Women’s
International Boxing Association (WIBA) belt as
Page 1 of 13
well as the Global Boxing Union (GBU) belt but
had both stripped because she failed to defend them.
Lamonakis said O’Neil is currently trying to move
down a weight class, even wearing a rubber suit to
shred pounds, according to the fighter.
This fight marks the final match for
Lamonakis on her current four-fight contract with
DiBella. She said she expected him to offer her
another contract before the upcoming fight.
“DiBella is going to take care of me,” she
explained. “I’m expecting something from him. I
know he doesn’t want to let me go.”Her promoter
will not be the only person taking care of her when
she goes to Worcester. The first time she fought at
Mechanics Hall roughly 70 family and friends
showed up to cheer her on, a number she is looking
to nearly triple this time, saying she is hoping to
bring about 200.
Any local boxing fans should definitely
consider making the trip. Having been on hand for
the debut last June, the arena is small enough for an
intimate feel, yet big enough to put you into a true
boxing environment.
The rest of the card is being filled out by
many of the same boxers who were on hand the first
time around, including headliner Edwin Rodriguez
> (18-0, 13 KOs), who hails from Worcester and
has fought on ESPN’s Friday
Night Fights many times, including his last
time out in January. Electric fighter Ryan
Kielczewski aka “The Polish Prince” is also back,
while former WBA junior middleweight champ
Joachim Alcine (32-2, 19 KOs) is headlining the
under card.
The price is right as well. Lamonakis is
selling tickets for the floor-level seating, which run
for $55 and $75. Anyone wishing to purchase
tickets can do so by contacting Lamonakis’ mother,
Sharon Lamonakis, at 863-3052 or by calling
Perfect Game Sports Bar (which is owned by
Lamonakis’ friend Mark Erlich) in Worcester at
508-792-GAME
Lamonakis should again put on a good show
in Worcester. Trainers Lenox Blackore and Don
Saxby have worked with Lamonakis since the
beginning six years ago, when she was just starting
out as an amateur. They then carried through her
four Golden Glove titles and have been working
with her to improve her speed. That could spell
trouble for Woodard and anyone else who steps up
to the challenge of taking on the undefeated 36year-old.
The light at the end of the tunnel is likely to
come at MSG, where Lamonakis fought for her
Golden Gloves titles but has yet to fight as a
professional. She admitted that winning a
professional title in the same arena as some of the
biggest fights of all time would be special.
“It’s everything I’ve worked for as a
fighter,” she said of getting a title shot. “But I’m a
little nervous about it, too. Especially if I’m the
main event.”But that’s still a long ways off. There’s
still plenty of work to do until then.
While Lamonakis is a professional boxer at
night, she is still a teacher by day. Lamonakis works
at the Family Academy in Harlem, where she
teaches physical education to children in grades K5. The school will be changing its name this year,
becoming a magnet school called the STEM
(Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
Institute of Manhattan.
As if that is all not enough, she is also
currently finishing up her second masters degree.
Lamonakis received her undergraduate in
Communications Disorder Speech Therapy at
Springfield College and then earned her Masters in
Elementary Education at American International
College. Now she is working online through Touro
College for a Masters in Students with Disabilities.
“People that think getting the masters online
is easier are totally wrong,” she said. Possibly even
tougher than taking punches from 260-pound
opponents.
*UPDATE: Sonya Lamonakis defeated Tiffany
Woodard on August 20, 2011!!!!
Alumni Sponsored Scholarship
The current TFHS Alumni Association has been
meeting now for several years. We have been
involved with many events from the Annual
Turners Falls Block Party, to a very successful
Career Day at the High School. We are now
establishing ourselves as a sponsor for a TFHS
Scholarship. We are working with a very limited
budget, so for the first year we will be offering a
$250 scholarship. The only stipulation we are
putting on this scholarship is that if you apply, you
must either have a parent or a grandparent who
attended TFHS.
Those interested should contact the TFHS
guidance office.

GMEF Presents 7th Annual Recognition Plaque
TURNERS FALLS - The Gill-Montague Education
Fund Board of Directors continues their tradition to
honor its benefactors with a classic walnut-tone
plaque outside the theater at Turners Falls High
School. Each engraved plate on the plaque honors
tier-givers of their 7th Annual Gala - "The Golden
Era of Rock 'n' Roll" featuring The Memories.
Recognition levels are the Einstein Club
($1,000), the Michelangelo Club ($500), The
Galileo Club ($250) and The DaVinci Club ($100).
Contributions were made as "tribute gifts" in honor
of educational staff members, in honor/memory of
loved ones, as class gifts, and to support the
enrichment opportunities of the Gill-Montague
students.
Also recognized on the plaque are Hillside
Plastics Inc., Montague Elks Lodge #2521 and The
Greenfield Savings Bank in appreciation of their
ongoing partnership as corporate underwriters.
"We sincerely thank our many contributors for
the continued support and are truly humbled and
grateful by the generosity of our community, said
Joyce A. Phillips, Annual Gala executive producer.
“The Annual Gala, while earning financial support
for the enrichment of our students, has proven to be
enrichment for our communities."
As a result of the Annual Gala, the GMEF has
awarded more than $64,800 in grants to enhance
learning in various fields including science, math
music, art, athletics, language and reading. To learn

Dual Champs
By Jay Butynski, Greenfield Recorder, 7/26/11
Turners Falls High School softball celebrated
two more championships this spring.
First, the team picked up the WMass title.
Nothing new. Just another sign of late spring in
Franklin County, like shad runs, sweet lilac and
school closing for summer.
In fact, the last time the Indians failed to win a
WMass title, our sports scene was much different.
The Red Sox were on their way to not winning a
World Series title for the 85th straight season, the
New England Patriots were preparing to win their
second Super Bowl title in three seasons, and the
Boston Bruins were still captained by Jumbo Joe
Thornton.
That was the 2003 season and it was the only
spring since the turn of the millennium that the
Indians have failed to take home the WMass title.
Since 2000, the Indians had also won four state
championships coming into this past spring, picking
up two crowns in Division II back in 2004 and
2005, then earning Division III titles in 2006 and
2008.
With all of this recent success, it can be tough
for the town of Turners Falls to find something new
to celebrate when it comes to high school softball.
But this spring the town was able to not only
celebrate one state title, but it could actually throw a
victory parade for a pair of state champions.
And….did you know……
While Turners coach Gary Mullins was busy
leading the Indians to the Massachusetts state title,

After briefly coaching at Greenfield Middle

the Brattleboro job, where she has been making a
name for herself the way that Mullins has in this

“It’s nice to see that she still enjoys the game

The relationship extends over state lines. The

The teams have also met at the Indians’ play-date in
the preseason and even had a regular-season

Now don’t get me wrong, while both coaches
spend time talking about the game and their teams,
it doesn’t mean that they’re clones.
“She bunts way too much for me,” Mullins
joked, “but then again who doesn’t.”
The two coaches may not share the same style of
play, but it’s clear where Markol got the passion for
the sport from. During our conversation she referred
to her former coach as “Mr. Mullins,” never once
calling him by his first name. She explained that

The Alumni presence at the game didn’t end
there. The TFHS Band director, invited all TFHS
Alumni to participate in a breakfast and parade from
the Turners Falls Fire Department to the High

To finish off the weekend festivities, the TFHS
Alumni Association sponsored a reunion of all
classes at Between the Uprights on Friday night. (A
huge thanks to Lew for donating the use of BTU
and for all his help throughout the night.) This
event was a huge success. Alumni included classes
from the 1940s through the class of 2011.
Over a 100 people attended. For those of us who
have been out of school for some time, the
nametags given out were a huge help to identify old
friends! Yes, there was a little less hair, maybe a
little more weight, definitely more pair of reading
glasses than when we were in high school, but
without a doubt there was an equal amount of fun
and laughter throughout the night.
Stay tuned—this event was such a success, you

“Why we Make Such a Big Deal of a High School Reunion”
I am often asked why we make such a “big deal” of a “high school reunion”. The
answer my friends is simple. From humble beginnings in the halls of TFHS have
come the finest champions of what is good and right in our world. From mostly
middle-class, blue-collar families, we came together and formed friendships that
have endured for 50 years. It was in the halls of TFHS that most of our generation
first experienced a taste of the “real world” out there that would forever change the
face of our graduating class and, hopefully, generations to follow. It was during
our high school years that we first experienced love and heartbreak, victory and
defeat, happiness and sorrow, and we learned to make choices and to live with the
consequences of those choices. These are the really important life lessons and we
began our journey in learning them together in the halls of TFHS.
With every reunion we travel back in time to remember a simpler time, and our
hearts and minds find respite in each other. With every reunion we are reminded of
where we came from and what values we brought with us, and together we face the
future with renewed spirit and faith.
And that my friends is why “we make such a big deal out of a high school reunion!”
It is not just a “high school reunion” for us. It is a return to simpler, happier times
to share sweet memories with lifelong friends.
Perhaps instead of “reunion”, we should call it a “homecoming” – for it is really
so true . . . “There’s no place like home”.
Sincerely,
Carl T. Hynoski

“FOROURYOUTH”
2012 Scholarship & Sponsorship Drive
Dear TFAC Supporters,
With the beginning of another year, our membership program begins its annual drive for new supporters and our scholarship appeal. Your
only requirement as a TFAC member is to make small cash contribution to support the local youth. The $3.00 Membership Dues only covers the cost
of our mailing so your donation to the Trust is very important. We do understand these are very tough times so any contribution will be greatly
appreciated.
During the past year contributions were made to; the Franklin County Babe Ruth League, Y.M.C.A., Town of Montague Park &
Recreation, Post 81 American Legion Baseball Program, TF Suburban Program, Edge Basketball Club, Newt Guilbault League, Turners Falls
Varsity Football Parents Committee The Salvation Army and others for a total of $1,600.00. In addition four (4) scholarships of $750 each were
awarded ($3,000.00), one each to Andrew Turban, Erin Casey, Jolina-Rose Blier and Anthony Reed bringing our total amount scholarships awarded
to $70,200.00 since 1978 to 107 deserving students.
By your support and commitment to these programs, we try to live up to the original motto of the club, “For Our Youth”. Unfortunately
with the devastating losses this past year of Honorary Member,” Monday Nighter” & TFAC Director William “Bill” Barry also Robert “Bob” E.
Rivet, Paul V. Sulda Sr., Robert “Budda” G. Allen, Edward F. Treml, Leon A. Momaney Jr. and Herbert H. Escott a total of 53 members have
passed away since 1997. The subsequent result of these vacancies is lost revenue, which may force hard but necessary restrictions in our future
awards without your help. Your support, therefore, is doubly important, as is the recruitment of new members, especially those who have benefited
from our program in the past. We would like to thank the families of the members that had passed away this year for thinking of the TFAC by asking
that donations in lieu of flowers be made to the trust. This was a very thoughtful act at a very difficult time and it just reinforces the character of our
members and the work we do.
We encourage all members to consider themselves active participants in recruiting new members. If you have received this letter for the
first time then someone believes you are the type of person the TFAC would want to help continue its service to the community. To the parents of
past scholarship recipients; your contributions and recruitment of new members to the TFAC play an important role in helping provide scholarships
for future students in need of assistance to attend college.
We need your help!
We would like to Thank You in advance for all your support. It has been a dream of the founding members of the T.F.A.C to support the academic
and athletic needs of our local youth; your contribution will help insure this happens long into the future. Remember it’s “For Our Youth”.
Sincerely,
Nancy Barry-Yankowski
