Box 748, Sierra Vista, AZ 85636 October Members Show ‘Lollie Yancey’ Featured Artist for the month of October Open Reception September 28th, 3:00-5:00 P.M. —- at the Sierra Vista Mall Gallery —- Featured Artist As an only child shuttling between parents in Ohio and grandparents in Lollie Yancey is a local gourd artist who was first introduced to this medium in central Pennsylvania, when the folks at the Army War College included Meadowbrooke Gourd Farm on a tour of the Carlisle area. It was after she moved to Arizona that she began to appreciate the amazing versatility of gourds. Gourds are members of the cucurbitae family, like pumpkins and squash, but dry to produce a wood-like shell which, after cleaning, can be painted, carved, burned and embellished. Some gourd artists include weaving techniques in their work, adding any of a variety of materials as a rim treatment. Lollie is currently growing gourds in her yard, but many artists purchase gourds from farms, some of which sell on-line. President’s Message Liz Horning Happy Fall, Artyfolks, I hope that you all will have, are having, have had, or will have had, a splendid Art in the Park weekend! My thanks to all of you who will, are, or did work to make it a success. This is the event that makes it possible for us to go for the rest of the year without bake sales, and we truly do appreciate all of the people who have worked so hard to make it happen. In the brief period between now and the time when we start passing out candy canes, there are a couple of other things to consider. The City of Sierra Vista, through the Arts and Humanities Commission, (of which I am a member, which is why I know all this stuff), and with additional cooperation from Cochise College, is planning to put on a Youth Arts Festival, along the lines of the "Make" festival that is held in Bisbee every year. This event will be held in March at Cochise College. The idea is to bring together local artists and craftspeople to provide the kids in our area with an opportunity to try out a wide variety of different art forms, all in one place, all on one day. We will be looking for artists of all sorts, willing to share their expertise in a very "hands on" way, the object being to give each child the chance to create something to be proud of. This is not about lectures or demonstrations, but about the kids themselves actually making stuff, and it may include drama and dance as well. Since we don't want to charge admission and we would like to cover the cost of the materials, (and also pay a small stipend to the artists who participate), we will also be looking for sponsors willing to help finance this event. If you would like to help out in any way, please let me know by phone or by e-mail. Also, if you have driven out Rte. 90 towards Tombstone lately, you have probably seen the new Sierra Vista Regional Hospital rising up a full four stories out of the desert. The building is due to be completed in March, and they are going to be needing a lot of art. A committee that the hospital administration put together will be helping to make the choices and I happen to be on it (which is why I know all this stuff). They are working with an interior design firm from California, who will be deciding which kinds of art ( i.e. photos, original artworks, 2-d or 3-d) will be needed in which areas of the hospital, and what sizes, moods and themes that will work best in different parts of the building. To start with, they will be looking for photographic images of Southern Arizona, Cochise and Santa Cruz Counties in particular, and they will be putting out a call to photographers for digital submissions. As soon as we have more information on that, we will be sending out a "Constant Contact" e-mail notice to our members, so watch for it.The California interior designers will be handling all of the matting and framing of the photos, so what the committee will be looking for is the digital images only. After that, the committee will be seeking out original work by local artists that's in keeping with the requirements established for the different areas of the hospital. More to come on this. Also, this is the month for nominations for the Mayor's Arts and Humanities Awards, and the deadline for submissions is October 24. If you would like to nominate anyone and did not get a form from the city, you can download one off the city website: www.sierravistaaz.gov/ departments, and look under "leisure services." There's no Dine with the Artists this month, but not to worry. With the holidays coming up, we will soon be going into partytime overload, and we might all want to save up a little space in the tum-tum. Memories of Patricia (Pat) Pollock Rhoads by Angel Rutherford Again, our art community has lost a wonderful talent. Pat Pollock Rhoads of Bisbee passed away unexpectedly September 10th, not quite a month after her beloved husband Richard "Bear" Rhoads. Pat was a gifted watercolorist painting mostly street scenes of Bisbee, the San Pedro River and the surrounding landscapes. She was a member of the Huachuca Art Association and for a short time had her paintings in the HAA Gallery at the Mall at Sierra Vista. Her most notable accomplishment for the HAA and the Sierra Vista Symphony was her paintings for Modest Mussorgsky "Pictures at an Exhibition" this March. She will be missed. “Pictures at an Exhibitions” watercolor by Pat Rhoads. 4 From the Galleries From the Mall Gallery Richard Etheridge September was a good month for the Huachuca Art Association Mall Gallery. Art sales improved. The Mall Gallery Jury Committee did not meet in September. The Gallery is at capacity in all Art categories and the Gallery can not accommodate the Art Work of additional artists. Lollie Yancey, the Mall Gallery Feature Artist for October has put up an exceptional display of her Art work. The display itself is a piece of Art Work. Lollie's use of shapes, sizes and colors is really something to see. If you wish to see it, come soon as I expect many of the pieces of Art Work will be purchased and removed from the Gallery display. Three pieces were purchased within the first three days. Lollie is asking the buyers, if possible, to leave their purchased Art Work in the Mall Gallery until the Featured Artist Reception on Sunday. I have included a picture of Lollie's display. Unfortunately, it is in black and white. Featured artist wall. Photo courtesy Lollie Yancey. Our HAA Mall Gallery continues to improve. Also, she uses polymers and minerals to create inlay effects. Her work has been offered at the Huachuca Art Association Gallery at the Mall at Sierra Vista, the Tombstone Art Association Gallery, the Douglas Art Association Gallery, Meadowbrooke Gourds Studio in Carlisle, PA, and Blue Tree Gallery in Bisbee, AZ. She has been a member of HAA since 2011. She is also a member of Roadrunner Gourd Patch in Bisbee, and Old Pueblo Gourd Patch (OPGP) in Tucson. As Vice President of OPGP, she arranges for demonstrations at monthly meetings, by gourd artists and artists from other fields, such as woodcarvers and basket makers. Lollie has taken classes in Pennsylvania, California, Arizona and New Mexico, from several master gourd artists, to include Robert Rivera, Bonnie Gibson, Karen Phillips, Dar Stone, Rosario Wilke and Gloria Crane. She works to employ the techniques in new ways, rather than reproduce the classroom pieces. She has competed at the Wuertz Gourd Festival in Casa Grande in 2013 and 2014, entering in the Advanced Division. She received third place ribbons both years, for carving and color application, and hopes to improve on that in 2015! Her current focus is creating musical instruments, and designing ornaments for the approaching holidays. Her inventory includes: faux raku, which mimics the finish achieved on ceramic with a specific firing technique; mimbres style, inspired by indigenous tribes of the Southwest; and zen-inspired doodles, which she does to relax . She has also created light fixtures, both wired and battery operated. Candles can't be used, as gourds are combustible. Lollie is married to Joe DePaul, and their son, Gregory, is a U of A student. Greg has created some gourd art, too; he received a blue ribbon at the Wuertz Festival in 2012. Both Lollie and Joe are retired Army officers, who moved to Sierra Vista in 2009 and 2010, respectively. We look forward to seeing all at this our 30th year of doing this show. 6 Member News September Demonstration Report What are the odds that the humidity in Sierra Vista would be high enough in September to lay gold leaf? With our recent rains, a number of HAA members and friends gathered at Gabrielle LaFargue's home to find out with different degrees of success. While the size was drying, we were treated to a slide show of many techniques and forms of calligraphy. Laying gold leaf is an interesting technique with a lot of options for use by the art community. I think we all learned a lesson...it takes some practice and a whole lot of patience and determination.
