Highlights
01 People in the Waja region
experience increasing unity.
Denominational differences are
lessening as they all participate in the
leadership of the translation effort.

the new translation in preaching
and worship. More than 10 churches
used the translated Gospel of Luke
at Christmas.
03 People are hiding the Word
in their hearts by memorizing
the Waja Scriptures. The mother
tongue translation facilitates
understanding and spiritual growth.
Faithful, Clear, Natural
these chapters had been checked by a consultant, they were able
to edit the translation for increased clarity.
The Christian Scriptures transcend cultures. At the same time,
the books of the Bible were written in certain times, places and
languages. And that was long ago and far away from Nigeria. The
Scriptures may seem foreign to some, although God’s intended
audience is people from every tongue, tribe and nation (see
Revelation 5:9).
Basic to the translation task is to be faithful to the original. The
information must be accurate. Part of the task is to strive for
clarity and naturalness, so it seems as if the book were written
expressly for the Waja. After all, it was!
The Waja translation team is
concentrating on helping the
community accept and own this
book. When writing about the
different steps in translation, the
team listed these outcomes:

clear and natural.
Translation is complex. To understand the messages contained in
Scripture is thought provoking. Then to express those messages in
another language is challenging.
(Sometimes, the language has
only recently been reduced
to writing.) And to make the
expression as clear and natural
as if it were old information is
challenging too.

Heavenly Father, may peace be
sown, take root and bear a harvest
in Nigeria’s troubled northeast, the
homeland of the Waja. May tolerance
and understanding replace conflict,
Lord, we pray.
Lord God, please grant understanding
to these translators. May they
comprehend the meaning of the text.
We ask You to help them express this
in clear, idiomatic Waja.
