Pastor’s Notebook - November 16, 2014
CHRISTMAS CARDS
This title may seem a bit early, so allow me to explain.
A few years ago, about this time of the year, I was out shopping and stopped to look at greeting cards.
For some reason, I had never looked at Thanksgiving Day cards before and found a few that really made
me laugh and a number that touched my heart. As I stood there with other shoppers pushing their carts
past me, I began to think to whom I should send Thanksgiving Day cards.
As I did so, I thought of family, friends from St. Michael and Assumption parishes, as well as friends from
long ago. When I went to the checkout line, my heart was filled with joy and gratitude and my hand
basket was filled with a pile of Thanksgiving Day cards.
I spent this past Monday with my “Jesu Caritas” priest support group. We meet once a month in prayer to
reflect, support, encourage and challenge one another. We make this a first priority in our lives, seldom
missing a meeting. We usually share lunch and dinner together and, if possible, spend the night. Our
meeting was in Bellingham this time, so I spent almost three hours driving there with Fr. Woody Macallister,
who drove up from Vancouver. It was well worth it.
I can’t tell you how thankful I am to my brother priests. Three of us have been part of this group for almost
25 years and have shared the depths of our souls with one another. I am so grateful for these brothers
of mine, especially as I grieve the loss of my brother George.
Which brings me to the point of this Pastor’s Notebook: if you chose a Thanksgiving Day card for God,
what would it look like? More importantly, what would you write inside? What would you say to God?
How would you express your gratitude, your thanks and your love? How could you adequately do so? I
know I can’t. Words aren’t enough. They seem so inadequate and so superficial and yet so needed.
A huge portion of what I am including in my card to God this Thanksgiving is YOU! Yes, you - each of you
for how you have helped shape my priesthood and me as a person. Thank you from the depths of my
heart and my soul. I am so grateful to God for you. I can never thank God enough.
As we make our Stewardship Commitments this year, I ask that you do so reflecting on these questions:
What does this financial gift and commitment for the coming year say to God?
How does it reflect what is in my soul and on my heart?
How, and even more importantly, DOES it express my love and my gratitude for all that I have?
Is it in any way proportional to what God has given to me and to my family?
Do I feel a deep joy in giving this amount back to God for the work of his Church here at St. Michael
Parish?
I know this is a lot to think about. Yet I pray that it will help you in making your commitment this year. If,
after prayerful reflection, you realize that you need to change your financial commitment, please do so.
Just let us know at the parish. You might also want to use these reflections in regards to your spouse,
your children, your parents and others in your life and then make some changes as well.
I pray that as you write your Thanksgiving Card to God that it brings God great delight.
In Christ, I love you,

Stewardship
“Well done my good and faithful servant.” With those
words the master in Jesus’ Parable of the Talents smiles
and rewards his servant. We often cite the Parable of
the Talents in relation to stewardship. Because of our
understanding of “talent,” we may assume that this is a
parable about skills and those kinds of gifts. Of course,
in this case, a “talent” is a unit of money. Scholars
assume that the master is wealthy; therefore, whether one
received five talents, two talents, or one talent, they most
likely received a huge amount of money according to our
standards. That is not the stewardship perspective of
this parable. Each of us, just as the three servants in the
parable, has received multiple gifts from God (the Master).
The question posed by Jesus, and the question we must
be prepared to answer at our own judgment, is “What
have you done with the gifts you have received?” Everything we have and everything we become are gifts from
God. Like the stewards in the parable, we have been
given gifts. Do we develop those gifts and do we
share them, or do we “bury” them and really do nothing with them? Those who do the former, return them with
increase to the Lord, are not only complimented, but embraced and invited: “Come share your master’s joy.”

Pledge Renewal Update
Last weekend, we received 254 pledge cards. Many of those included a parishioner’s note saying that they have taken steps
to increase their giving in response to the blessings they have prayerfully identified in their lives! That is the most heartwarming
news of all. Thank you! If you haven’t yet returned your card, please take time this week to prayerfully reflect on the gifts
you’ve received and how you can return, in thanksgiving, a portion back to our good and gracious God by supporting the
ministries of your parish.
Bring your commitment card to Mass with you next week or pledge online at www.saintmichaelparish.org.

Catechesis Of The Good Shepherd: Observing The Child
Many people wonder what makes Catechesis of the Good
Shepherd (CGS) different from other methods of faith formation.
The International Council for CGS describes what CGS is by
setting out “32 points” that characterize the method. The first
point states:
“The child, particularly the religious life of the child, is
central to the interest and commitment to the catechist of
the Good Shepherd. The catechist observes and studies the
vital needs of the child and the manifestations of those vital
needs according to the developmental stage of the child.”
CGS starts by observing the child and his or her needs and matches the method to meet
the developmental stage of the child. Sound intriguing? For more information, contact Mary
Trotter at [email protected] or (360) 292-7145.
Moms, grandmas, aunts—any women desiring to pray for children and schools, whether
private, public or homeschool, from preschool through college.
The prepared CGS Atrium
environment is a place of
order and natural beauty.
To maintain this, we seek
artisans to aid in the creation of
specific works to be used
by the children. This may
include building small wood
“environments” (very basic
model-sized structures with
walls and doorways) from
detailed
building

provided),
or
sculpting,
carving, or sewing small
figures.
There is also a
need for a skilled hand
to paint figures that have
already been made. Detailed
guidelines and materials are
provided and timelines are
flexible. Contact Mary Trotter
at [email protected].
Join us for a powerful time of prayer! Praying together provides hope and strength to moms
who carry heavy burdens for their children.

Small Groups Week 2: The Final Exam
This week in small groups, Father Jim
encourages us to acknowledge Jesus as
our savior and ask Him to help us recognize
Christ’s presence in those who are in need.
If you were not able to join a small group
this session, you may still follow along as
we reflect on the Sunday scriptures. Weekly
study sheets can be found on our webpage.
Some groups remain open to new
members at any time. Register on-line.
Advent is coming, and there are many ways to prepare ye the way for Emmanuel. To sit in the presence of God in
Eucharistic Adoration is one sure and good way! Visit the St. Joseph Chapel - any hour, any day.
