REKINDLING THE FLAME
“Stir up the inner-fire, the gift God gave you….”
2Timothy 1:6
A number of years ago a man picked up the morning paper, and, to
his horror, read his own obituary. The newspaper had reported the
death of the wrong man. The caption read: "Dynamite king dies." The
story identified him as a "merchant of death." He was the inventor of
dynamite and he had amassed a great fortune from the manufacture
of weapons of destruction. Moved by this disturbing experience, he
radically changed his commitment to life. A healing power greater than
the destructive force of dynamite came over him. It was his hour of
Pentecost. Thereafter, he devoted his full energy and money to works
of peace and human betterment. Today he is best remembered as the
founder of the Nobel Peace Prize -- Alfred Nobel.
This summer we are reading through the first six chapters of the
Book of Acts, which record the founding and development of the
Church through the power of the Holy Spirit. We’ve seen how the Spirit
transformed weak and shaky people, like Peter, into bold proclaimers
of the Gospel. The Spirit can transform anyone at any time. That’s a
part of the divine job description! The story of Alfred Nobel reveals one
who was transformed from life-denying to life-affirming. How could he
make such a drastic change? It is well known that Nobel was a devout
Lutheran who frequently attended the Church of Sweden Abroad, led
by Pastor Nathan Söderblom. Söderblom was a life-affirming Christian
who would later be the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1930. We
don’t know exactly what happened to Nobel while he was attending
Söderblom’s church and under the influence of his teaching – but
Nobel suddenly made a dramatic change of mind and lifestyle. The
Bible calls that repentance. On the Day of Pentecost, the Spiritempowered Peter challenged the crowd: “Repent and be baptized,
every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of
your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38).
All of this is to say, when we finally get tired of living in the past of
brokenness and life-denying behavior, we can always say: “I don’t want
to live like this anymore. Come, Holy Spirit, and help me make the
change into that life-affirming person God wants me to be.”

WoW!
Workshop of Wonders Vacation Bible School
had more than 40 children excited about imagining, building, growing, working and walking
with God. Through family suppers, group times,
crafts, recreation, science and snacks they
learned Bible stories and verses and had a
great time. Thank you, VUMC members for
your prayers and support. A BIG thank you
goes to Shannon Boyer, VBS Director, and to
volunteers Kathryn Witzel, Valarie Robertson,
Jill Stephens, Jeri Lee, Alan Lee, Linda Havrilla,
Connie Sallee, Brian Walker, Chris Boyer,
Melissa Avery, Jennifer Beene, Jan Schechter,

Village UMC wants, actually needs,
a loving adult to help with child care
on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8,
every other week during the summer.
You will be paid, not only in money,
but also in the joy of helping to care
for the children of adult choir
members during rehearsals. For a

Prime Timers
New Fellowship to Begin Soon!
John Ramsey and daughter,
Emily, have graciously donated
three Bernina Sewing machines
and one Quilting machine to
Village UMC. Thanks to Nancy Kendrick for
entering our name with this wonderful charity. A
“Stitch and Sew Fellowship” will be developing
in the future here at VUMC. Sewing lessons will
be offered, as well as instruction in making
items suitable for missions such as NSO, Circle
of Care, Skyline, Infant Crisis Center, etc.
Knitting, crocheting, and needlepoint lessons
will be offered as well. Be watching for future
start dates and times.
For our program on Thursday, July 10, Linda
Havrilla will present information on the
community garden, herbs, and canning.
Future programs will include Martha Pendleton
sharing with us about her Paris trip, and Don
Nieser telling us about the planes he builds,
including a field trip to Wiley Post for a tour of
his hangars and planes. Plan to join us—bring
a dish to share and enjoy the fellowship.
Remember: no Prime Timers in August!
