Mission 2014
Dear Parish Family,
First of all, I want to say a huge thank you to all who took part in our Parish Bake Sale and who made generous
donations to our Mission Trip. Together these events raised almost $4500 last weekend to support our young
people and help us bring some needed benefits to the communities we will visit in El Salvador. I was so
impressed with the enthusiasm and support of the community for our mission trip.
I am also impressed with that other kind of generosity, namely the young men and women and adults who
responded to this invitation. They are willing to give up a week of their time and many comforts to take part in
this mission. Our trip is very important and I think it will do much to help us understand an important part of
our life as a church.
Mission trips have grown in popularity. This year 1.5 million Americans will take part in some form of short
mission outreach. Some will go on service trips, where the emphasis is on activities such as building
homes. Some will go on medical missions, where they will bring a high standard of medical care to nations that
have little modern medicine. Our trip is a little different and perhaps more traditional – our trip is about sharing
faith and understanding the justice mission of the church. The being there and being together is more important
than what we do.
I have been involved in mission trips for many years. This is my eighth trip to El Salvador. Something that
always concerns me is what the take-away message will be. If the message is about how people of wealth and
power can do something FOR people who are poor, then the message is inadequate, no matter how helpful the
work. If the message is about how a young person with many advantages and opportunities can work WITH
and understand a young person with few advantages and opportunities, our trip is very worthwhile. The focus of
our trip is about sharing "richness" in family, in our Catholic faith, and in community; I can say for sure that the
people of El Salvador have shared their riches with me.
In the United States there is a tendency to think of economic poverty as something experienced by an
unfortunate minority. To go on a mission trip is to become aware that very few people in the world live as we
do. Statistically, most of the world is poor. Poverty in El Salvador is typical of the kind of poverty seen in
struggling nations. Only a small percentage of the population owns anything of significance. Even the most
intelligent, industrious, and motivated high school graduate has little chance of securing a higher education or
having the opportunity to use and profit by their gifts. When our young people return from El Salvador they
will find it hard to explain what they have witnessed but they will know that they have been very changed by
this experience. And that of course is the point.
Pope Francis has been speaking a great deal about the importance of the justice
mission of the church, our commitment to working for a world where no person is
deprived of the essential blessings of this world. No one mission trip will
accomplish this and that is perhaps why Jesus told his disciples that the poor would
always be with them. A very beautiful Spanish prayer captures this: Sólo le pido a
Dios que el dolor no me sea indiferente . I only ask God that I may not become
indifferent to the sorrow.
Thank you so much for helping us to make this journey.
Sincerely yours in Christ,

Did you know... Norma McCorvey, who went by the legal pseudonym Jane Roe, was the plaintiff in the
landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision; she has had two children, and never had an abortion; she was
received into the Catholic Church in the 1990's, and works actively as an advocate for ProLife In 2005, she
petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade, on the basis that abortion is harmful to women -- the
petition was turned down.

Reflections On the Gospel from Pax Christi
June 22, 2014
This Sunday is dedicated to a celebration of the Body and Blood of Christ. It is a celebration of
Eucharist, the Bread of Life. But Moses tells us we do not live on bread alone, but on the Word of
God, another name for Jesus. And what did Jesus teach at the first Eucharist (and throughout his
life)? Love, service and sacrifice, humility, and community. He is the Bread of Life, and he is so
much more than bread alone.
Even secular psychology tells us we need not just bread, but love and community to survive and be
healthy. That is why so many, including our Church, more and more recognize solitary confinement
as torture. Learn more at the next Metro New York Religious Campaign against Torture event,
“Broken on All Sides,” a film and discussion at the Congregation Ansche Chesed, 251 W. 100th
Street, Manhattan on Wednesday, June 25th at 7 PM.

Comemos y
bebemos este alimento para nuestra salvación. Texto:
Philip J. Sandstrom, STD © 2001, OCP. Derechos reservados.
Mons. Oscar Romero, 28 de mayo de 1978.
