Dr. Keith Amos was instrumental in the startup of the 1in9 foundation and our
organization wouldn’t be here today without him. We owe so much to Dr. A – and
next month will mark the one-year anniversary of his death.
Dr. Amos shared with us his vision of helping the under served here in North Carolina.
He did everything humanly possible to assist women battling breast cancer—not only
in the operating room, but out in the community educating, in the labs researching,
or making rounds or phone calls well into the evening - always with a smile. He was
more than just a surgeon, he was truly a gift to the medical community, and more
importantly to his patients.
Tonight, we honor Dr. Amos’ memory by naming the Keith Amos Survivor Table
here at the Pink Tie Affair– filled with patients that have been supported through
1in9 and have won their individual battles with breast cancer. Nothing would have
pleased Dr. Amos more than for us to be celebrating good health and happy lives.
1in9 is so appreciative that Elbert and Ann Boyd made the survivor table possible
tonight. When we work together to fight for the 1in9 wonderful things are possible!

The mission of 1in9 is to offer aid and comfort to
breast cancer patients and their families facing
financial crisis, by providing assistance for their unique
non-medical needs that might prevent them from
receiving or completing their treatment.
Additionally, 1in9 promotes community awaremess
regarding the prevalence of breast cancer and
the importance of early diagnosis though yearly
mammograms, physical exams & monthly self exams.

our patients. To our dedicated

this cause. Tonight it will all
come together and not only
will it be beautiful, but we will
raise the much needed funds
to continue our mission of
helping women undergoing
breast cancer treatment.
Throughout the evening you
will hear us talk about “Never
Alone,” a song written by Lady
Antebellum, the country music
group. Back in January, Dana
ended one of our volunteer
meetings with this song, and it
brought tears to our eyes as we
realized these words describe
what 1in9 has become for our
patients…

Now with three full years
under our belts, over 350
patients and families served,
we celebrate our survivors, our

allowed us to help in the form of
transportation, utilities, food
and much more!

In loving memory of
Christine Holland Hamlin
March 7, 1943 - August 5, 2013
Born in Greensboro and educated at UNC Greensboro,Chris initially
contributed to the Raleigh community as an elementary school teacher.
Inspired by her students - particularly one child with vision problems –
she developed a life-long passion for children’s vision issues. Eventually,
her “spirit of giving” led to involvement in many charitable organizations
in Raleigh.
Chris managed a busy family life with her husband Bill, and was actively
involved in the education and various pursuits of her children –
Katherine Ann, Christina & Will. She was also active in many local
charitable and cultural organizations. Chris was on the Board for the
NC Museum of History, a founding member of the Red Sword Guild,
a Junior League of Raleigh Advisory Board member and a long-term
board member and major contributor to the N.C. Society to Prevent
Blindness. Her contributions to these organizations are immeasurable.
Chris was energetic and creative and generously shared her talents
by serving on many committees and was instrumental in the décor,
organization and success of countless fundraising events. Mrs. Hamlin
was a true Patron of the Arts. She fostered the growth of many
charities like 1in9 and was instrumental in our 1st Pink Tie Affair
in 2012. She and her husband donated the majority of the stunning
ballroom décor used for that event - which helped raise $50,000! In
addition, Chris shared her ideas and wisdom with 1in9, teaching us
along the way.
This year, the Hamlin Family continues Chris’s tradition of philanthropy
by sponsoring our Pink Champagne Diamond Bar. 1in9 proudly credits
our gala success to Chris and her entire family. Like a diamond, Chris
was unique and “one in a million” – and a priceless friend to our
organization.

UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Survivorship Program where she worked with
oncologists and other clinical staff in developing cancer treatment summaries and survivorship
care plans for cancer survivors at the N.C. Cancer Hospital. Currently in her position as Patient
Assistance Coordinator for the Comprehensive Cancer Support Program, she counsels cancer
patients about benefits available from government agencies and private foundations, makes legal
referrals, and offers financial assistance to patients. The UNC Cancer Patient Assistance Fund,
which Cindy manages, provides a resource for helping patients overcome financial barriers to
receiving quality oncology care.
