Man rescued after jumping off train trestle into Shasta Lake WHAT'S GOING ON? Required school vaccinations available Aug. 13 It’s time to make sure that children are up-to-date on required vaccinations before the school year begins, Shasta County Health and Human Services said. Children are required to have certain vaccinations to attend school or child care in California. Under a new law, personal belief exemptions are no longer an option, and the only exemptions are medical ones for students entering school after Jan. 1, 2016. Public Health and Partnership HealthPlan of California will offer a backto-school immunization clinic in the JCPenney court area at the Mt. Shasta Mall in Redding for children 11 to 13 years old from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13. Shots offered will be Tdap, meningococcal and HPV. Cost is $11 per shot for those who qualify (uninsured, Native American or Alaskan Native, MediCal or CHDP eligible). Although private insurance is not accepted, vaccines for insured children will be available and a receipt will be given so individuals can bill their insurance provider. Cost for the shots with private insurance are $43 for Tdap, $109 for meningococcal and $174 for HPV. You can also talk to your health care provider. But then, at this point in time, what difference does it make? Apparently not a whole lot. It is beginning evermore to resemble a ship of fools sailing blindly on through the quagmire of corruption, ineptitude and outright lies toward some illusionary Utopia. Not unlike the children’s story The Emperor’s New Clothes, the situation regarding Hillary is becoming a farce. In the story, the emperor cared for nothing but new clothes. A couple of swindlers took the opportunity to convince him that they could weave FORWKLQJVR¿QHWKDWLWFRXOGEHFRPHLQYLVLEOH2QO\ those worthy or intelligent could see the fabric. Those unworthy or stupid could see nothing. In his impatience to know how his wardrobe was coming along, the emperor sent several individuals that he trusted to check on the weavers. Naturally they could see nothing, but rather than admit they were stupid or unworthy, they pretended to see and admire the fabric. They gave glowing reports to the emperor. He had to see for himself, so he visited the weavers. He was shocked to see nothing, but could not admit it. How could he admit to being unworthy or stupid? 2EYLRXVO\WKHHPSHURUFRXOGQRWUHVLVWSOD\LQJ out the fantasy to the extent that he paraded before his people nude, with his servants pretending to hold up his trailing robes. A small child cried out, “But the emperor is naked.” The crowd began whispering WKDWDFKLOGVDLGWKHHPSHURUZDVQDNHG7KH\¿QDOO\ took up the chant: “The emperor has no clothes.” Undaunted, the emperor continued the fantasy, clothed only in his false pride. The allegory seems apropos, including that of the general populous. Despite facts provided to prove that Hillary has committed acts that were either foolhardy or untruthful, we are still seeing her create her own version of “truth” before an audience of millions. Her stalwart supporters pretend the charges DJDLQVWKHUDUH¿FWLWLRXVRU³WUXPSHG´XSFKDUJHVE\ Republicans. And she is given air time to perpetuate her fantasy. The DNC was the coronation of the new and LPSURYHG+LOODU\D¿JPHQWRIKHULPDJLQDWLRQDQG supported by her husband, Bill, and her daughter, Chelsea. Granted, many young voters were not old enough to grasp what happened during the Clinton years in the White House. However there are many who witnessed the whole sordid mess. But that all VHHPVIRUJRWWHQQRZ2UDWOHDVWLWLVQRWPHQWLRQHG by the media. Bill’s sexual exploits and assaults of women were facts, and most of the victims are still alive to attest to their veracity. While Hillary now claims to be a staunch champion for women, it was not always so. Through it all, she stuck by her man and blamed all the women. I think she even referred WRVRPHDVELPERV2QHWKLQJFRPHVWKURXJK loud and clear: Hillary believes she deserves to EHSUHVLGHQW+HUTXDOL¿FDWLRQV"6KHLVDZRPDQ and she has waited long enough. She has paid her GXHV¿UVWDVDQHQDEOHUIRU%LOODQGDVDSXSSHWIRU 2EDPD The new and improved Hillary reminds us that she has spent her whole life in public service. I fail to see any positive evidence of her good works, but she insists she has helped thousands and thousands of children. I may have missed the testimonials to that effect from parents. Some facts she tries to avoid are references to Benghazi and her email shenanigans. However, they continue to dog her. She, in turn, pretends they are trivial, that the public’s opinion of her is a caricature, that they don’t know the real her. Thus she is about to reinvent herself as the “change maker.” I can see the chameleon, or even the monetary analogy: paying for and expecting monetary favors. Beyond that, I think she is pretty set in her ways. Besides, there are too many individuals who know too much, or have been involved for the situation to just go away. But will she be allowed to continue her trampling of the truth in her hell-bent charge to reach her goal at any cost? Even when people challenge her on what she has said, she is given air time to embellish what she really meant, or to blame someone for misinterpreting her words or her actions. Facts are facts, and lies are lies. So why doesn’t it apply to Hillary? The whole DNC episode was a contradiction of messages. After Bernie gathered such a following of dedicated disciples, he turned around and betrayed them by telling them they had to support Hillary. They actually booed him. And that wasn’t the only booing that was done. They even booed the military and some American heroes. Maybe one of the reasons that it was hard to control the crowd was WKDWPDQ\RIWKHVHDWVZHUH¿OOHGE\SHRSOHZKR were paid to do so. Apparently there wasn’t total loyalty which was a contradiction of their Stronger Together motto. At least that has been reported by one such seat occupier. Bernie isn’t even a Democrat, so it beats me why he was allowed so much leeway. He is a Socialist. 2IFRXUVHWKHLQVLGHUVNQHZKHZRXOGQ¶WEHDOORZHG to be the nominee. It came out that the Democratic National Committee was supporting Hillary from the very start. It’s those pesky emails again. After placement, the needles are sometimes twirled or manipulated, or stimulated with electricity or heat. Dear Savvy Senior, Is acupuncture a proven treatment for arthritis pain? I have a lot of back and neck pain and am wondering if it’s worth trying. What all can you tell me about acupuncture? - Afraid of Needles Dear Afraid, Many well-designed studies over the years – funded by the National Institutes of Health – have found acupuncture to be very effective in easing arthritis pain, and can help with a variety of other ailments too. Here’s what you should know. First used in China more than 2,000 years ago, acupuncture has become increasingly popular in the United States over the past 40 years. While acupuncture isn’t a cure-all treatment, it is a safe, drug-free option for relieving many different types of pain including osteoarthritis, low back pain, neck pain, migraine headaches, ¿EURP\DOJLDSRVWRSHUDWLYH By Jim Miller pain, tennis elbow, carpel tunnel syndrome, dental pain, menstrual cramps and more. Studies have also shown that it can be helpful in treating asthma, depression, digestive disorders, addictions, menopause symptoms like KRWÀDVKHVDQGQDXVHD caused by chemotherapy or anesthesia. Exactly how or why acupuncture works is still not fully understood, but it’s based on the traditional Eastern theory that vital HQHUJ\ÀRZVWKURXJK pathways in the body, and when any of these pathways get blocked, pain and illness result. Acupuncture unblocks the pathways to restore health. However, today most U.S. medical doctors tend to believe that acupuncture works because it stimulates the nerves causing the release of endorphins, which are the body’s natural painkiller hormones. It’s also shown to increase blood circulation, decrease LQÀDPPDWLRQDQGVWLPXODWH the immune system. What to Know If the thought of getting needles stuck into your body makes you a little uneasy, you’ll be happy to know that an acupuncture treatment is nothing like getting a shot. In fact, it’s quite relaxing. Here are some additional points you should know: The needles They’re solid, sterile and disposable (used only once), and as thin as a cat’s whisker. The number of needles used for each treatment can vary anywhere from a few, up to a dozen or more. And where the needles are Does it hurt? You may feel a brief, sharp sensation when the needle is inserted, but generally it’s not painful. Once the needle is in place, however, you may feel a tingling sensation, numbness, mild pressure or warmth. Treatments How many treatments you’ll need will depend on the severity of your condition – 12 treatments done weekly or biweekly is very common. It’s also important to know that acupuncture can be used in conjunction with other conventional medical treatments, or by itself. Cost and coverage The cost per treatment typically runs anywhere from $50 to $100 or more. Unfortunately, most private health plans, including Medicare, do not cover acupuncture. 7R¿QGDQDFXSXQFWXULVW in your area ask your doctor for a referral, or you can do a search online at WKH1DWLRQDO&HUWL¿FDWLRQ Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (nccaom.org) DQGDFX¿QGHUFRP%RWK sites provide a national GDWDEDVHRIFHUWL¿HGDQGRU licensed practitioners. Dieting techniques you can learn from Olympic athletes By Charles Platkin Despite our best intentions, when it comes to weight loss and healthy habits, we all have our weak moments -- those times we always slip up, no matter how determined we are. Yours might be eating at restaurants, snacking at work or overeating when under stress. How can you combat these “uncomfortable” eating situations? Well, the Olympics got me thinking that we can learn a lot from how elite athletes overcome adversity. Almost all worldclass athletes practice mental rehearsal. Ever hear the expression “practice makes perfect”? The concept is to rehearse an upcoming HYHQWEXWQRWRQWKH¿HOG -- in your mind. “You’re basically using imagery to trick your brain into having an experience you didn’t actually have,” says Shane Murphy, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at Western Connecticut State University and former sports psychologist to the U.S. Olympic team. Skiers imagine each run down the slope, perfectly THE DIET DETECTIVE® executing every turn in order to “train” their bodies to do the same when they compete. “For an athlete it’s like having an instant ‘preplay’ -- seeing the event and SUDFWLFLQJLQFOXGLQJ¿[LQJ mistakes), all before it happens -- to avoid making the big mistakes on the ¿HOG´VD\V-LP$IUHPRZ Ph.D., a sports physiologist and author of The Champion s Comeback: How Great Athletes 5HFRYHU5HÀHFWDQG Reignite (Rodale, 2016) So why not use those same techniques to show yourself what it will feel like to be free of a particular overeating shackle? Roadblock Anticipation You don’t have to physically practice standing in the buffet line at your best friend’s wedding to learn how to turn down fattening food. Instead, rehearse the scenario in your mind so, rather than eating the triple-layer chocolate supreme cake with ice cream, you can revise the ending. “We train athletes to anticipate their reaction to negative situations, so they are able to create a positive outcome,” says Murphy. “For instance, a skater falling in midsession, a soccer player playing in inclement weather or a sprinter competing against a world record holder -- the athlete needs to know how he is going to respond in advance. The same applies to avoiding potential diet disasters.” ,QFUHDVH&RQ¿GHQFH “Athletes (and nonathletes) are faced with uncomfortable issues, and in order to break away from the anticipated fear or anxiety of an event, you QHHGWREXLOGFRQ¿GHQFH´ says Kay Porter, Ph.D., a sports psychologist in Eugene, Ore. And what builds WKDWFRQ¿GHQFH"7KH experience of doing it right. Mental rehearsal helps athletes overcome performance anxiety. For example, say the holidays make you anxious. You already know what to expect next Thanksgiving, so you can mentally rehearse saying no to the VWXI¿QJJUDY\DQGFDQGLHG sweet potatoes. See your SODWH¿OOHGZLWKSODLQWXUNH\ and other, less fattening, “trimmings.” As Louis Pasteur said: “Chance favors the prepared mind.” Developing Your Own Mental Rehearsal 1. Identify the occasion: Choose an eating situation \RX¿QGGLI¿FXOWZKHWKHU it’s unconscious eating, traveling, special occasions (weddings, family dinners), dining out or a midnight snack attack. Develop a rough sketch of how you’d like to change your behavior in that scenario. Include the thoughts, emotions and actions you want in your “ideal” version. 2. Brainstorm: Dr. Murphy recommends brainstorming all the negative events that could occur within that situation. ,I\RXKDYHGLI¿FXOW\ sticking to your diet when you’re going out to dinner, come up with all the possible complications you may encounter: the great bread, the stupendous blue cheese dressing or the fabulous creme brulee. Picture what your friends might say if you avoided those diet disasters. And don’t forget to think about all the positive outcomes. That’s the key, reminds Murphy. 3. Add detail: Be VSHFL¿F'RQ¶WVSDUHD thought, no matter how LQVLJQL¿FDQWLWPLJKWVHHP 4. Create the script: Come up with a step-bystep description of exactly what your ideal experience would be. Make sure to include how you would react to all the possible negative scenarios, creating positive outcomes for each. 5. Give it life: Once you have the general script down, go back to make the experience really come alive. “See, feel, hear and smell it,” says Murphy. “Make it as lifelike as possible. Imagine it in 3D.” 6. Make it automatic: Dr. Afremow recommends that you rehearse your imagery often, including the night before the situation or event and even just before it begins, to keep it fresh. If you’ve always ordered dessert at a restaurant, you do it unconsciously, because it’s a habit. But if you rehearse a different outcome -- for instance, ordering fruit, coffee or no dessert at all -- you will create a new “automatic” response to the dessert menu. The details should be as familiar to you as the words to your favorite song. 7. After the event, no matter what the outcome, revise your imagery and try to repair any mistakes or setbacks. In fact, it’s almost expected that there will be issues with housing, infrastructure and traffic. Still, some of the reports coming out of Rio as the Opening Ceremony nears are disturbing. As if the threat of the Zika virus wasn’t enough, the city’s own police force has warned that they are so pressed for funds that patrols have been cut and visitors will not be safe. But at least the athletes will be taken care of, right? Don’t be so sure: Guanabara Bay (site of sailing and windsurfing events) and Copacabana Beach (marathon swimming and triathalon) are so polluted with garbage and untreated sewage that athletes have been warned not to open their mouths to avoid catching serious illnesses from the polluted water. BOLT’S LAST STAND Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, world record holder in the 100m and 200m, is looking to make history in his final Olympic appearance. Bolt is going for an unprecedented “triple-triple” — gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m in three straight Olympics. The 29-year-old took home gold at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic Games and has said he will retire after the 2017 World Championships. One of those standing in his way is Justin Gatlin, the 34-year-old American who won the 100m Olympic gold in 2004 and the bronze in 2012. Gatlin fueled the rivalry between the two recently by suggesting that perhaps Bolt received undeserved special treatment when he was named to the Jamaican Olympic team despite being injured and skipping the country’s Olympic trials. But Bolt is healthy now, as are his chances to make history. BILES’ OLYMPIC DEBUT United States gymnast Simone Biles was too young to compete in the 2012 Olympics, but her credentials are undeniable: She’s won three consecutive all-around titles at the World Championships (a first) and has won the last four all-around titles at the national championships. In fact, she hasn’t finished anywhere but on top of an all-around competition since 2013. She is expected to win gold in the all-around and team competitions, and she is the reigning world champ on floor and beam. Given that she boasts the most difficult vault combination in the world, a five-gold-medal performance is not out of the question. But keep an eye on American teammate Gabby Douglas. The 2012 all-around gold medalist is trying to become the first repeat Olympic champion and finished second to Biles at the 2015 world championships. STARS OF THE POOL There will be no shortage of recognizable names at the swimming events, starting with the sport’s biggest star. Michael Phelps, who retired after the London Games in 2012 only to change his mind and return at age 31, will be looking to add to his record 22 career medals after qualifying for three individual events. He will also likely be part of all three men’s relays on a strong U.S. team that includes 11-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte on the men’s side and London stars Missy Franklin and Katie Ledecky on the women’s side. At 21 and 19, respectively, Franklin and Ledecky should be fixtures for years to come. Host Brazil will field its largest swimming squad ever, but the locals will miss cheering their biggest star as 100m world-record holder Cesar Cielo, a three-time Olympic medalist, stunningly failed to qualify. BACK ON COURSE For the first time in more than a century, golf will be a part of the Olympic Games. Unfortunately, many of the sport’s biggest names won’t be competing. Fear of contracting Zika virus will keep the top four players in the latest world rankings — Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy — away from Rio, and they are not alone. At least 10 others passed on a chance to compete for one reason or another. Still, half of the world’s top 10 will be on hand, including Americans Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler. Watson has gone so far as to say he’d rather win a gold medal than another major title, but he’ll have his hands full in the four-round stroke-play event. In addition to Fowler, Watson will face British Open Champ Henrik Stenson, as well as Spain’s Sergio Garcia and Great Britain’s Danny Willett and Justin Rose.
