Mustang Echoes “The Voice of MHS” Dates to Remember: November 7th No school November 20th-22nd Fall play, Anne Frank November 26th-28th Thanksgiving Break December 3rd Early Release, 1:00 December 16th-19th Exams Dec. 20th- Jan. 4th Winter Break MHS Hausler Makes Madeira Home Instead of answering questions, I’d like to introduce myself here. My name is Dave Hausler. I’m a dual citizen, Swiss and American, and I’m in Madeira for a year as a foreign exchange student. I’ve lived in Madeira before, so now this year is kind of “Home Sweet Home” for me! It’s been eight years, though...I visited first through fourth grade at Dumont and Sellman. Now I’m a senior here at Madeira High School. I have a younger brother, Flo; many of the sophomores may remember him from early grade school. In my free time, I like to play soccer, draw graffiti (This takes up a big part of my life. Thanks to the Madeira Drumline! I got my first official assignment- look at their shirts!), explore the world of music, and occasionally read a good book. It is so awesome to be back again! And living with my best friend from grade school, Dennis Walsh, and his family makes it even better. Although I can’t compare Madeira to my town in Switzerland, I know that it’s really super here. Echoes Staff Chris Ballweg John Bascom Johnny Carpenter Lauren Christman Abby Gilfilen Megan Korengel Matt Luther Maria Meyer Ryan Orme Katy Scherer Zach Seiden Elizabeth Van Hulle David Wood Mr. Kitchen- Advisor SPOTLIGHT Freshman Spotlight: Austin Horwitz What do you like about high school so far? The teachers aren’t as annoying. What do you plan on doing after high school? Continue training in mixed martial arts and trying to become a fighter in the UFC. A professional fighter. Is there anything people don’t know about you that you may want to share with them? Since middle school, I have changed. Personality wise and academically. If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why this power? Besides strength, the power of X-ray vision. This one may make you think a bit, but futuristically thinking, where would you like to be in ten years? On the optimistic side, in the UFC making $350,000 every match. Probably not married; they get in the way a lot. You know how women are. Thus far, what is your favorite class in your freshman year? Probably C.P. History. Mr. Brady is like the funniest guy I know. All right, let’s say you’re on a desert island and you’re going to be isolated until a miraculous boat stumbles into your lonesome direction. If you could bring three things and one person, what/who would they be and why? Hunting knife, flair, and sunscreen for my ginger skin. I will burn like crazy! My friend Katie Berger, she is funny and not annoying, and seems like a person you could be around with for a long time without getting mad at that person. How would you describe yourself in three words? I hate this question. Loving, caring, and benevolent. Why those? Because I love people, I care for people, Austin’s Favorites and I’m very generous to people. What is it like being the youngest of three Movie: Harold and Kumar 2(uncensored version) boys? I guess annoying, but you get experi- Music/Band: Basically everything ence from your older brothers, like mistakes After School Hobby: Training and working out. they’ve made. SPOTLIGHT Freshman Spotlight: Tori Powers What do you like about high school so far? You get to pick your classes. There are more people here, and people are more mature. What do you plan on doing after high school? Going to college. Is there anything many people don’t know about you that you may want them to know? I like the outdoors, and I’m really outgoing. If you could have any power, what would it be and why? Fly, ‘cause I wouldn’t have to walk. Most embarrassing moment? When I think I know who someone is from behind, and I call their name, but it’s not them… Looking far beyond today, where do you see yourself, or would like yourself to be in about ten years? Maybe married and have a good career in the medical field. What is your favorite class so far, in your freshman year? History with Brady, because it’s easier to connect with him, and it’s easier to learn with him because he’s kind of funny. Okay, you’re on a deserted island, and you’re going to be there for quite awhile. If you could bring three things and one person, what and who would those be and why? A boat, a map, and a sailor (to get home). Describe yourself in three words. Outgoing, caring, and fun, because they describe me in a positive way. What is your favorite after school hobby? I like soccer games, not so much practice. If I didn’t have practice, I would hang out with friends. What is your opinion on our presidential candidates? I think Obama should win, because I just think he’s tried harder. Like he’s had to overcome more obstacles to get where he is today. What is a hardship you have had to face throughout your life? I would say going from living with my mom for the majority of my life to living with my dad. And now I don’t talk to my mom. What is it like being the youngest in your house? Being the youngest in my house doesn’t really change the rules for me. There are no more restrictions than there are exceptions. You know how they always have their clothes personalized and made just for them? Well, what about your fellow students? No, I’m not talking about kid celebrities, or those few that somehow still have a knack for sewing. I’m talking about the ones that make their fashion their own. No, this article isn’t about pure trends, but individual expression. This issue, we have Hannah Fitz , an equally unique student. She seems very sensible, amiable, and is a sophomore this year. She must’ve been very tolerant, as well, considering all of the pressure I’ve put on her with this article (thank you so much for everything, Hannah). You’ve probably seen her in the hallways, with short black hair and an eyebrow ring, and always, always flare or wide-leg jeans. While her fashion sense could be considered more “rebellious” and less “mainstream” than Emily Feist, I see the same thing: a person given the opportunity to express herself and who takes advantage of this. Here is the survey/interview I conducted with Hannah: Q: Do you have an inspiration for your style? Or do you just wear what you want? A: Well, I don’t really have a specific inspiration, per se, but I do admire the way that quite a few people are overall. I mean, yeah, some days I just get up and throw something on, or some days I come to school in what I slept in. Everybody has those days, but, for the most part, Andy Warhol, Bert Maccraken, Marilyn Manson, , Evan Rachel Wood, and Nicole Richie. Q: What is your “View on Fashion”? A: I think people should be allowed to dress as they choose. It’s just another form of expression, and it’s interesting. Q: What is the most “fashionable” movie? A: I haven’t seen many movies in my lifetime, but my all-time favorite has got to be Pan’s Labyrinth. It’s incredible. Very dark. Q: What is the most “fashionable” song? A:The most fashionable song is probably something that’s by Rihanna or some rapper guy, [all of] which I don’t really listen to. My favorite song, however, couldn’t really be hailed down to just one. It’s like a 4-way tie between “Blue and Yellow”-The Used, “Adam’s Song”-Blink 182, “You never told me what you do for a living”-My Chemical Romance, and “Cartoon Network”-Oxymoronation. They’re a little band from Dayton, Ohio, but they’re so funny! Q: When was the first time you started dressing like this? Was it an act of rebellion? Or did your parents give their approval? A: When I was a little kid and we still lived in Chicago, I used to play dress-up all the time. Then, they thought I was cute, but when I got older, like, 6th-7th grades, I started getting back into that. They said that it was a little much. I agree now, that how I was then was pretty awkward and overstated. Q: What is your least favorite thing about mainstream fashion? Or do you like it? A: I hate skinny jeans! They’re so awful, and they’re everywhere! That’s basically the only thing I hate. Or that people aren’t themselves, rather they wear every thing from one genre and try to be associated with a certain group of people. Uhm, like, they’re only Avril Lavigne-esque or a clone of a Hollister model. That’s really dull. Q: What is your favorite quote? A: “I think everybody should like everybody” --Andy Warhol circa 1978 SPOTLIGHT Catherine Murray Senior Spotlights Q: What are going to be your fondest memories of Madeira? A: That’s the stupidest question I’ve ever heard. Q: What about Madeira are you going to miss the most? A: My best friends. My two friends Abby and Tierison. Q: What is your favorite pasta and why? A: Pastini because its fun to eat. Q: Where do you plan on going to college and why? A: UC because I want to go to DAAP. Q: What are your favorite movies? A: Greenstreet Hooligans, Boondock Saints, and Narnia. Q: When you go to college what do you hope to get out of it? A: A degree. Q: Who are your favorite teachers? A: Mr. Freeman, Mr. Larbes, and Mr. Corn because they are really smart. Q: Who is your hero or the person that you hope to model your life after? A: My big brother, Christopher. Q: If you could marry anyone who would it be? A: George Clooney, Travis Meyer, or Brett Favre. Q: What is the best thing to get at Choo Choos? A: Tuna Melt on wheat with no tomato. Brad Rusk Q: What about Madeira are you going to miss the most? A: Being able to know everyone, and all of the teachers. Q: What about Madeira will you miss the least? A: Being in the bubble where everyone knows what you’re doing Q: Where do you plan on going to college and why? A: UC, Purdue, or OSU because they all have good engineering programs. Q: Since the economy isn’t doing very well are you still going follow your dreams, or are you just looking to get paid? A: Follow my dream of getting a good job. Q: When you go to college what do you hope to get out of it? A: Hands on experience for a job. Q: What other changes have you dealt with recently? A: Applying for colleges and writing college essays. Q: Who is your hero or the person that you hope to model your life after? A: My grandpa because he was able to graduate from UC as a chemical engineer and have a successful life. Q: If Robbie Tudor and Chris Ballweg collide in the hallway, who would you help up first? A:Chris. MADEIRA MUSTANGS SOCCER: 2003 State Champions Second consecutive State Championship, and back-to-back undefeated seasons SPORTS Just Another Winter... Johnny Carpenter It’s winter again, and that just means another intense wrestling season to come. As some might not know, last year as a team, Madeira finished 5th in the State with Johnny Carpenter placing 3rd as a freshman, his older brother David placing 3rd as a senior, and Kevin Cloran taking the runner-up spot, also as a senior. The team did in fact lose some very talented seniors like Kevin and David, but this year the team looks strong and determined to achieve such goals as in the past years. This year, the Mustang’s will, in fact, have a much larger team filling in spots that were empty in the past few years. As for returning wrestlers such as captain Cole Hayes (District Qualifier), Andrew Walsh (District Qualifier), Luis Godines, Dosh Hyde, Corey Phelps, Theo Cedillo, and Johnny Carpenter (State Placer), all look to discipline each other and push one another to the edge to reach their individual goals. Assistant Head Coach Chris Davidson says, “Winning League would be awesome and a huge upset because we haven’t been able to beat Reading out of the number one spot since 2004. Also, Head Coach Jason Foley and I are looking to get around five wrestlers to Districts and possibly three to State, but I don’t want to jump the gun quite yet.” Indeed wrestling is a very tough and mental sport that can break you down and knock you up, but as Dan Gable said, long time Head Coach for Iowa University, “Once you’ve wrestled everything else in life becomes easy.” For instance, just imagine entering the wrestling room after a long hard day of school and no room to eat then going to war with a fellow teammate. Your muscles are dead and your throat is parched, but you know you have no room to spare for even the slightest gulp of water. Before practice you piled sweatpants and a sweatshirt on to lose the certain amount of weight. You’re drenched in sweat and can hardly stand. You are then in the same situation during a live match: your muscles are weakening, and you’re about to break, but in the end you know you are victorious once you get that single hand raised. I guess all wrestlers can say that the true fight or the true discipline is shown at the dinner table, or at that party your friends were talking about all week. All you can do is go home and watch as your parents and siblings stuff their faces with whatever they want, but no, not you, you are left to watch alone, without food and just the images of the day when you step on that scale. I’m not trying to point out all of the difficult and brutal situations in the sport of wrestling. all I am trying to do is just give you a general outline of a wrestler in season. In fact the sport is very brutal, but it sure does pay off when your hand is raised, and when you look on sports websites and see you are being talked about for an upcoming match. The pride and dedication all pays off too in the end when you beat the stud that was suppose to stomp you. The Madeira coaching staff alone has put in a huge amount of their time to come in and train the team and push them to their limits. As a result, huge accomplishments have been made. Kris Kuykendall in 2003 was Madeira’s first State Champion. David Carpenter, in four years, had 101 pins, which is 4th in Ohio’s history and also was Madeira’s first 3x State Placer. Kevin Cloran was an astounding 2x State runner-up. Johnny Carpenter was the first Madeira freshman to win Districts and to place at the State Tournament. All these accomplishments are just handed over, they have been worked for and strived for for many years. The sport of wrestling could be the toughest sport out there, but no one should back down from the challenge and what could be achieved with some simple effort, dedication, and time. SPORTS Mustang Basketball Preview By: Ryan Orme and Chris Ballweg It is almost time for the boys to lace up the Nikes again and go to work on the court to bring Madeira a CHL championship. This year’s team brings back a lot of experience, only losing two seniors from last year’s squad. The Mustangs return a very strong senior class, including Robbie Tudor, Nate Gulick, David Wood, Matt Luther, Doug Tuke, Patrick O’Leary, and Cameron Malone. Robbie Tudor and Nate Gulick are the Mustangs only two with All-League honors, so look for them to be the go-to guys. We sat down with Mr. Reynolds to ask some important questions about the upcoming season. Q: What are your expectations for this season? A: Well, I would say that we definitely should be in the hunt for the CHL, and I would like to think that we could get a high seed in the tournament. Q: Who do you want to see step up this year? A: You always want your seniors to step up. We have a good core group of seniors. Q: Which games are most critical to your team’s success? A: The legitimate answer is that every game is important. If you are going to look at success in the CHL, you have to look at Indian Hill. I suspect that anyone in the CHL can give us trouble, since we aren’t physically imposing. Q: Have you seen much improvement in your team when compared to last year? A: Yes, and we have improved to the point where we are in the hunt to win big games. As a team we’ve got to make plays when it matters. Q: How do you expect the league to pan out? A: I could see Madeira getting the nod with the coaches in the preseason because of two returning all-league players (Robbie Tudor and Nate Gulick). Wyoming is always good because of their athleticism, and we have struggled with Finneytown. Taylor is ready to compete this year and beat some teams also. Q: How will Doug’s return add to the team? A: Well, the one thing that I saw with Doug last year was that he wasn’t sure if he wanted to be a basketball player. Now, his level of commitment is way stronger, which can only help. Q: What team from Madeira’s past would you compare this one to? A: The 2004-2005 team when Moore, Eberle, and Morande were juniors. Not a physically huge team but full of skills and had a lot of potential for success. They were a unique team because of good length. Q: What were your biggest weaknesses last year and how do you hope to improve on them? A: Better rebounding on both ends. Kids grew like Doug, Misleh, Rolfes, which should help address the issue. We also have to be better in the fourth quarter, stop the turnovers in the fourth, and make big plays, and the fact that this is a senior-dominated team will help that. SPORTS Boys’ Soccer Season Completed By: Zach Seiden The Mustangs started out their soccer season with a late goal victory over Lemon-Monroe. They also ended their regular season well with very close battles with state-ranked Seven Hills and Mariemont. The fights they kept up with these teams certainly showed how far they had come this season. Next year, they will most likely have similar challenges. They will lose a very good senior class, and the ability to score goals is definitely an issue they have to work on. “In soccer, if you can’t score, you’re going to have a hard time competing,” says Head Coach Jon Unger. The Mustangs will also need a lot out of their returning seniors. Vincent Schlagbaum, John Kinsella, and Paul Damschroder will definitely be key to a good defense. Cody Rizzuto will also need to own the midfield, and Josh Stanifer will be critical as goalie. The Mustangs ended their season with a record of 4-10-4 and a CHL record of 1-4-2. “I thought the guys battled until the end,” Unger commented. “They certainly improved and played really well the last three to four weeks.” The boys certainly played with class even when they were down. They also certainly showed a magnificent improvement. Although their record wasn’t the best, the team certainly had excellent camaraderie from the beginning of the season to the final game. Sophomore Sensation By: Matt Luther Trying to improve on an already impressive tournament run her freshman year, sophomore Brooke Van Skaik was poised to make a statement this postseason. After winning her sectionals and advancing through districts, Brooke arrived at Ohio State’s Gray Course with a season of experience under her belt. Before reaching the state tournament, Brooke played on the boys’ golf team and struggled at times. The longer holes played in varsity golf ultimately helped Brooke’s short game, sharpening her skills for the tournaments. Near the end of the season, she also diligently prepared for the postseason, spending most of her time playing the courses she would play at sectionals, districts, and the state tournament. Brooke won her sectionals, shooting a 73, winning by three strokes. At districts, Brooke didn’t perform her best, but she still shot an 82 and managed a second straight appearance at the state tournament. At state, Brooke shot a 79 the first day, and birdied the last two holes the second day to shoot a 77, finishing at 156, tied for 8th place. Relieved after the round, Brooke felt relieved that she met and exceeded expectations. “I felt good about what I shot at state, but there is still room for improvement,” says the sophomore golfer. In the next two years, Brooke is ready to make a serious contention for the title of best female golfer in Ohio. SPORTS Who is The Steam? Zach Seiden It is obvious that Cincinnati does not have an NHL hockey team, and Cincinnati’s AHL team, The Mighty Ducks, are no longer a team anymore. However, in the CSHL (Central States Hockey League), Cincinnati, also known as the “Queen City,” does have a hockey team called “The Queen City Steam.” This team has gone by this name for only two years, where as before they were known as “The Junior Cyclones.” This organization has been around for about eight years. During these years, the players on the team who are not from Cincinnati live with a “Billet Family.” The player pays a monthly fee to the family to be housed and fed for about seven or eight months. During the time the players are here, they have a choice to go to a local college or find a part-time job. The Queen City Steam currently has a record of 6-5 after a tough weekend on the road. However, with a total of 48 regular season games, Head Coach Don Biggs is confident that his team is more than capable of working their way back up to the top. Being a Junior A hockey player in the CSHL isn’t as laid back as it may seem. For them, it is very much like a job. Every day they go to practice knowing that if they do not work hard and show a consistent rate of performance in each game, they will quickly find themselves on another team or on their way back home. When not on the road, The Steam plays at Sports Plus on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. The games are very intense and tend to be a lot of fun. Many fans love to go for the three juicy periods of nimble puck work, hard hitting, and of course the occasional dropping of the gloves. There is also an extensive variety of arcade games to play between periods. It is $5 a ticket for adults, $3 for kids 13 and under, and $3 with your student ID if you come for the start of the game. With everyone’s support, The Steam has a chance to make it all the way to the Hurster Cup. SPORTS Mustang Football Paving the Road By: Chris Ballweg “Paving the Road” was the motto for this year’s Madeira High School football team. Under a completely new coaching staff and led by a new quarterback, Kyle Voisard, the Mustangs were predicted to finished 7th out of the 8 teams in the league. However, Coach Arcuri and company definitely began the process of “paving the road” by surprising many critics and finishing 3rd in the very competitive Cincinnati Hills League. The Mustangs finished with a 6-4 record, 5-2 in the CHL, which was their first winning season since their playoff appearance in 2005. This years mustangs was led by a strong group of experienced seniors, who include #14 Kyle Voisard, #4 2008 Madeira Mustangs David Wood, #5 Patrick O’Leary, #7 Will McClannahan, Schedule & Results #78 Robert Braun, #32 Chris Ballweg, #51 Brian Wagers, #76 Brad Rusk, #6 Rob Tudor, and #52 Cole Hayes. This group should lead the charge for the Mustang’s 2009 team, who will look to improve on 6-4 and make the Mustangs first playoff appearance in 4 years. The 2009 senior class will now pass on the role of “paving the road” to the next group of Mustang seniors, as Madeira will continue to build on their success. SPORTS Volleyball Wrap-Up Chris Ballweg The 2008 Madeira Amazons volleyball team was a very young squad, with no seniors on the team. However, that did not stop the Amazons from producing a foundation for next year’s season, finishing with a 7-7 record in the league, and posted a winning record of 11-10 overall. This was a big improvement over last year’s record of 3-11 in the league, and 5-17 overall. As each year seems to bring more victories for the Amazons, expect next year to be a big season. The entire squad will be returning and looking for a run at the CHL crown. Watch out for Zons Volleyball in 2009! Over the summer, traffic jams were very frequent throughout Madeira, especially during the time when Miami Avenue was closed at the railroad tracks. Everyone had to add another ten minutes to every trip due to the delays. Now, the construction on Miami is finished, and it looks like things on Shawnee Run are finally wrapping up as well. “Road Closed” signs are a common sight throughout Madeira; however, people should not ignore them. The Madeira police are now more strictly enforcing the road closures by pulling over those drivers who break the rules. For those of you who are tired of the long delays on Kenwood Road, they won’t be going away that soon. The Kenwood Road project will not be finished until sometime next year. So, my best advice for the drivers of Madeira is to slow down and give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination. Entertainment Compare and Contrast: The Secret Life of Bees The Book vs. The Movie Megan Korengel There are many similarities when it comes to both the book and the movie that it was inspired by. But what really caught my eye were all of the differences that were in the movie and not in the book. For starters, in the movie, Zachary Taylor gets taken by a group of angry white men when he is seen going to a movie with Lily. The men storm into the movie theater and take Zach from Lily, beating him the entire way out. The police are of no use and it takes a group of men in the community to find Zach on their own and bring him back safely. Another event that was wrong was how Lily’s father found where she was. In the book, Lily makes a phone call in Tiburon which T. Ray found out about by looking at the phone bill. In the movie, T. Ray saw a pin hole in the wall where Lily hung a map over the bed. When he placed a map over the same spot, he figured out where Lily went. Another thing that is different is the fact that the movie left out the entire day in which the Boatwright sisters praise and give thanks to their statue, Mary. In the movie, they also added things that were not written in the book. When Rosaleen was baking, August and June gave her the nickname of July. The movie also really jumped around and gets quite a few events out of order. In the book, Rosaleen moves into the house to sleep with May because she is afraid of the dark. In the movie, Rosaleen moves into May’s bedroom and says that she will be closer to her spirit. These changes did not wreck the entire movie, they were just obviously not as close to the book as I expected. One of the most significant changes is definitely for the better. In the end of the book when T. Ray is pulling out of August’s driveway, Lily runs after him to ask a question. When he stops, she asks if he had told her that she killed her mom just to punish her. She wanted to know whether it was true or not. In the movie, Lily asked a completely different question. When he stopped the truck, she asked if her mother had come back for her the day she died. In the movie, T. Ray shows a soft side that was not shown in the book. He told her that her mother had indeed gone back for Lily. He lied because she hadn’t come back for him. In the book, T. Ray tells Lily that she killed her mother when he easily could have lied to ease the pain. I would consider both the book and the movie to be really great stories. I liked everything about the book better, except for the ending. I really liked how they chose to end the movie because it was much more uplifting than the book. I find the story to truly be one of inspiration because it shows that love is love. It can come from anywhere or anyone. ETC. Ask Atticus New to this school’s newspaper is an insightful, understanding voice, here to answer questions or solve problems students may face throughout their teenage years. Whether it should be a bullying situation, trouble with a teacher, or a failure in society, Atticus Finch (the chosen alias to the real newspaper writer) will do his best to deliver nonjudgmental advice to the student body. This section is designed for students to read and realize that they aren’t the only kids who seem to be confused in this stage of life. Mr. Finch will answer tough questions and attempt to soothe the anxiety of teenage angst. Students are further encouraged to write any problems they face onto a piece of paper and drop it off to the newspaper staff, which may anonymously be used in the next issue. So, sit back, digest, and enjoy! Dear Atticus, I am a freshman this year, and everything is so new to me. Every time I walk down the halls, I feel like an ant compared to the older kids. It’s really hard to fit in, especially when you’re new. And the worst part is, I barely have any friends. How can I fit in with all these people who see me as the new kid? -Nervous Novice Dear Novice, Thank you for sharing; that’s the first step towards change. I felt the same way freshman year, intimidated by the older classes and nervous when I would tread the halls. The need for acceptance is something that all teenagers experience at one point or another; some dwell on it, while others don’t feel its persistent tug. It can be a burden to be unaccepted by the people who you have to see eight hours a day, for four years. It can also be detrimental to your individuality if you overly try to fit in. The best thing you can do, my friend, is be yourself, or be as much of yourself as you know. If you can do that, not conform to whatever is easiest to make a friend, you are bound to attract a new companion. They will hopefully see that you are real, and that’s what friends are. Friends are real; they are there to help you enjoy life and guide you through difficult times, as well as have fun with. -Atticus ETC. What’s Up With Ger? David Wood 1.) Describe your first date. My first date occurred when I was an 8th grader at Wyoming Middle School. A girl actually asked me out to go to the local Friendly’s Ice Cream establishment on a Saturday night. I was pretty tonguetied around the ladies, and I’m not sure I exchanged a single word with her the rest of the week. The date itself was pretty awkward. We were picked up by her mother and deposited at the date location where we were joined by her reinforcements. I don’t think I said a word the entire night. This girl moved away the following year, but a number of my classmates stayed in touch with her. Even though she never attended my high school, she attended our ten-year reunion. It might have been my imagination, but I got the impression she was still angry with me. 2.) Describe your favorite prank or practical joke. I’m not a big fan of pranks or practical jokes, but my favorite prank took place at the expense of my alma mater, Harvard University. Harvard was playing at home in THE GAME against bitter rival Yale. As usual, this was the one game of the season where the stadium was full. Excitement was high when a group of Yale students, disguised as Harvard spirit leaders, passed out those picture cards to an entire section of the stadium’s Harvard side. They were to be held up at a designated time so that the rest of the crowd could see the composite picture. When the time came, the entire section stood up with their picture cards, revealing the message: “WE SUCK!” The cheer from the Yale side was as enormous. I don’t even know the final score or which team won the game. It doesn’t matter. With the prank, Yale was the winner that year. ETC. FEATURES Madeira’s Own “Invisible Children” and “Unified for UNIFAT” Group By Lauren Christman Dennis Walsh is a senior who began a group last year to raise awareness about the situation in Uganda and to raise money to support Unified for UNIFAT. He recently answered a few of my questions about the efforts and goals of the group. For those who don’t know, what exactly is Invisible Children? Invisible Children is an organization based in San Diego that was started in 2003 by a few collegeaged students. The goal of Invisible Children is to bring peace to Uganda, which has been in a state of civil war for about 23 years. The group we are currently involved with is called Unified for UNIFAT. The goal of Unified for UNIFAT is to give elementary school-aged children an education as well as a better quality of life. Where did you get the idea to start a group here at school? I became involved a couple of years ago after I saw the documentary “Invisible Children: Rough Cut.” I have a couple of friends from other schools who started Unified for UNIFAT clubs at their schools, and I thought that I should do something as well. When I first proposed getting involved, there were several students who were interested in doing something about it as well. That, plus Mr. Mate’s support, made it very easy to get started here. What events have been held in the past to support this cause? For the past two years, Unified for UNIFAT has held an overnight in February at Moeller High School. Sycamore has held tailgates before football games, and several schools have held band showcases. Last year we held a screening of the documentary during common time and charged $1 admission. We’ve also sold “Africa hats.” What activities do you have planned for this year? Later this year all of Unified for UNIFAT will be holding an iDance and a “Walk and Rock” in the spring, where we will walk for peace. The walk will end with a benefit concert with bands from different high schools and colleges in the area. We don’t have any concrete plans for here at Madeira yet, but we are planning to make t-shirts to sell, and we are working on plans for a large fundraiser. How can students become more involved? If any student wants to get involved, they can email me at: [email protected]. I really encourage anybody who is interested to check out www.unifiedforunifat.com or www.invisiblechildren. com. I especially encourage freshman to get involved and check this out because they weren’t here last year. Right now, we are trying to find a time to show a 17-minute video to the whole freshman class so that they all have a chance to see what this is all about. FEATURES Speelman SmartCar By: Maria Meyer It seems like everywhere you look there’s a commercial or an ad for something that will help the environment or a celebrity talking about global warming. The environment is a very important issue right now and many people are doing their part to help. Ms. Speelman, who teaches Algebra 1, recently did her part to improve the environment and bought a Smart Car, which is an electric vehicle with an electric motor. Smart is a unit of Daimler-Chrysler, located in Germany. Smart Cars are much more common in Europe where over 750,000 have been sold. The United States is the 37th country to sell Smart Cars. Ms. Speelman found that her car gets 35 miles per gallon, and her gas bill went from $150 to $70. Smart Cars give off ultra-low emissions, are painted with only water soluble paint, have recyclable body panels, and are made from recycled parts. There are a few different models of Smart Car available. Ms. Speelman has the Smart Fortwo, which obviously seats two. “I started thinking about it a year ago. My lease was going to be up, and I wanted something environmentally and financially friendly,” says Ms. Speelman when asked why she wanted to buy a Smart Car. Ms. Speelman purchased the car in September and says she really likes it. “Everyone who gets in it can’t believe how roomy it is. Everything from my Camry fits into the trunk of the Smart Car, including four soccer chairs.” One of Ms. Speelman’s favorite features of the Smart Car is that it has a panoramic roof, which lets the sun in. To buy a Smart Car you usually need to be put on a waiting list, but Ms. Speelman bought hers through the “Orphan Program” which is when someone buys a Smart Car but then doesn’t want it anymore so it becomes an orphan and someone else can buy it. Ms. Speelman said she would definitely recommend this car to anyone. An easier way to help the environment at school is by recycling. Every classroom has a box for recyclables thanks to the Recycling Committee, headed by Chandler Stevens, who is also the sole member. “It makes a difference,” says Chandler, “It’s something I care about, and it’s community service.” The Recycling Committee was started last year by National Honor Society, and Chandler is continuing it. We can’t all trade in our cars for Smart Cars, but we can do little things every day, like recycling, to improve the planet. FEATURES Anne Frank Takes the Stage Elizabeth Van Hulle As many of you know, Madeira High School is preparing for its annual fall play. This year, Anne Frank will be taking place November 20th- 22nd. The cast members have been working hard to make this year’s show perfect! I interviewed some students in drama to find out about their favorite roles, most embarrassing moments on stage, and their thoughts about theater. Aidan Workman (junior) Q: What made you interested in drama? A: Well, you know me; I’m a goofball, so I always enjoy playing someone else. Also, I got started at an early age in theater, so it had always been my wish to do it with the high school theater arts. Q: What advice do you have for those who might want to audition? A: Stay cool and calm. Even if you mess up and the director knows, the director would much rather have you play it off than make a funny face. And in the end, no matter what you do in theater, whether it be crew, pit or acting, it’s always a blast. Cat Ward (junior) Q: What has been your favorite role to play so far? A: Definitely the Purser in Anything Goes. It was a lot of fun. Q: What has been your least favorite role to play? A: Agatha in Guys and Dolls for Madeira. But in a play at Sharon Woods, I played a bratty white girl in Runaway Slave, and I was mean, so I didn’t like it. FEATURES Alexa Wainscott (sophomore) Q: What was your first play and role ever? A: Since I am only a sophomore, my first role was last spring, in the musical Anything Goes. It was so much fun because of all the excitement and energy. I also liked helping with the Rumors crew in the fall backstage. Q: How do you feel when the show is completely over after the last performance? A: There is a sense of accomplishment after the show, because it’s something that everyone puts so much time into, and really takes ownership of and can be proud of. CJ Ivester (senior) Q: What was the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you on stage? A: Sophomore year in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, I played Francis Flute, which meant in the last scene, I had to wear a low-cut red dress. Q: What is the most you have gotten from being in drama? A: A lot of close friends as well as the ability to feel comfortable in front of crowds and in any situation. Sara Dreibelbis (sophomore) Q: What was your first role ever? A: My first role was actually at Madeira High School. When I was in first grade, I was a royal child in The King and I. Q: What advice do you have for those who might want to audition? A: Audition! Nobody is going to kill you if you are not Hollywood’s next great movie star, or Broadway’s next great performer. There is no point to not audition! I guess what Sara is trying to say is, “nothing ventured, nothing gained!” So get out there, you future Thespians of Madeira, and make your voices heard! Also, be sure to support your peers by going to see Anne Frank. The dates are November 20th at 7 PM, November 21st at 7:30 PM, and November 22nd at 7:30 PM.ere they will be sold) Go on… it’s worth it! FEATURES College Chat Lauren Christman I recently asked four seniors about how their whole college application process was going. Hear their advice, laugh at their mishaps, and learn from their mistakes! Chan Stevens Where are you applying? University of Vermont, University of Hawaii, Macalaster, Washington University in St. Louis. What do you plan to study? Environmental Science. What has been the biggest challenge for you throughout this process? Choosing the right school. It was kind of hard to narrow it down. Do you have any regrets about applying or going on college visits? I wish I could have visited University of Hawaii, but that’s about it. What advice can you give to younger students? Keep track of the activities you do. It’s a pain to remember them later. Ellen Bauer Where are you applying? Xavier University, Loyola University of Chicago, Marquette University, Miami University What do you plan to study? Accounting with a minor in Marketing. What has been the biggest challenge for you throughout this process? Narrowing down the universities that I wanted to apply to. Every college starts to look the same, so I had to focus on the little things I liked. Do you have any regrets about applying or going on college visits? I wish I would have decided where I was applying before the summer. I had to try to schedule visits last minute. What advice can you give to younger students? It’s never too early to start applying for scholarships. Pay attention to deadlines! FEATURES Ryan Orme Where are you applying? The University of Cincinnati, The Ohio State University, The University of Kentucky, and Miami University. What do you plan to study? Communications or journalism, but it isn’t set in stone. What has been the biggest challenge for you throughout this process? Well I haven’t done any applications yet, but I think picking the right school is very difficult. Do you have any regrets about applying or going on college visits? I wish that I had looked into colleges farther away from Madeira. What advice can you give to younger students? You should go to a college where you can have fun because that is the most important part of college. If you don’t have fun, then you will regret it. Katherine Herndon Where are you applying? UNC, South Carolina, Tennessee, IU, OU, Miami, Clemson, and OSU. What do you plan to study? I’m undecided. What has been the biggest challenge for you throughout this process? It’s a ton of work. I still have so much to do. Essays are about topics on which I have no opinion, so it’s difficult to actually sound like I care. I also have no clue what I want to do or where I want to go, so the decision-making process seems like it’s going to be stressful. Do you have any regrets about applying or going on college visits? Vanderbilt. I went there because my parents wanted me to see it, but I didn’t like it. That was a bit of a waste of time. What advice can you give to younger students? Apply early and get it over with. Even though it’s stressful, I think most colleges are really the same. You’ll get in somewhere, and everything will be fine. FEATURES Entrepreneurship Class By: Matt Luther With the start of a new school year comes the start of entrepreneurship class. For those clueless freshmen reading this article, entrepreneurship means starting and managing your own business. At the beginning of the semester, Mrs. Jordan, the teacher, splits the students into separate businesses and holds a competition to see who wins. The winner is determined by multiple tasks throughout the semester, such as a community service project, selling a product to the student body, and a seminar held during common time. Each person on the winning team earns $50 and the MVP of that team earns $100 at the conclusion of the class. This year, both of the competing teams, Prodigy Productions and Elite Enterprises, have already hit the scene with the pep rally that was one of the best we have had in a while. Prodigy Productions sponsored the rapper Tragic, and Elite Enterprises sponsored the cheese-coney eating contest, (much speculation has arrived debating which team won) but the winner will be revealed at the end of the semester. As I was a member of Goodfellas Inc. last year, I found that I really enjoyed entrepreneurship and it has been probably the most unique elective I have taken in my high school career. To those who are interested in business and want to experience the excitement of owning one, I highly recommend this class. FEATURES 2009 Success Story Megan Korengel It is the year 2019, and the class of 2009 is returning to their home turf for their 10 year reunion with the chance to see the shining faces that they graduated with. A lot has happened in 10 years, and many of the grads have stayed in touch or have run into old classmates throughout the years. Here is their success story after they left Madeira High School. The high school sent out reunion invitations to all of the graduates of the class of 2009 and expected a good turnout. From what the teachers could remember, this class was full of school pride, and they were sure that everyone would want to come back to their old alma mater. All the former graduates received their invitations, and there was an overwhelming amount of students who couldn’t wait for a reunion to share success stories and family photos. When Chris Ballweg received his invitation, he was on his way to work as a sales clerk at Hollister in the Kenwood Mall. He and Robbie Tudor had been working there since high school, still wondering how the last 10 years flew by. Considering that they work at such a popular clothing store, they ran into several former schoolmates like Joanne Kaissar who was constantly in the store with her daughter. They have also run into Maria Meyer and her husband, Carl Azuz. Maria and Carl are extremely happy together and have many friends in the sports entertainment field. Maria found it ironic when she saw her old high school classmate Ryan Orme reporting on the football game of the week. Though Ryan had become somewhat of a public figure, he still found time to hang out with his old buddy, Ian Horwitz. Ian is a “jack of all trades” and has become a successful businessman by day, break dancer by night. One night while Ian was hitting all the clubs and promoting his new dance moves, he ran into Sarah Urwin. Sarah had been a recording artist for a while and then decided to become a music producer, so she was out and about looking for the next big thing. Ian pointed Sarah in the direction of a local coffee shop that had an “Open Artist Night” for local artists on the rise. This shop was coincidentally owned by Brad Rusk. Brad had once dreamed of holding a very high profile job, but then took a different approach and is extremely happy with how his life has panned out. When Sarah got to the coffee shop, beautiful music was pouring out of the mouth of a familiar face. When Sarah got closer to the artist, she realized that it was her old high school songbird, Elizabeth McRoberts, with Kyle Bennett accompanying her on guitar. Sarah immediately wanted to sign Liz, but Liz had to talk it over with her longtime friend and trusted manager, Cathy Daggitt. Once Cathy decided that Sarah met all of Liz’s requirements, the duo signed the papers and became musical partners in search of making the perfect record. After Cathy was done finalizing papers, she headed over to Kenny Groll’s house. Kenny had not gone far since high school and decided to live in his mother’s basement. When Cathy got there, Adam Cadet was ranting on about how terrible his French II students were. French class has never been the same at Madeira since Adam took over for his mom when she retired. Once Adam got over the fact that his students never listened to him, he went on to talk about how funny it was that so many former Madeira students were now teachers at the high school. Sarah Choudury took over for Miss Homer when she decided to retire, Dan Puterbaugh was the freshmen math teacher, and Hilary Frew was currently the principal. That wasn’t just it, though. Desiree Paolo and Kristina Finley came back after college to coach cheerleading, leading the girls to several first place competition awards. FEATURES Patrick O’Leary came back to coach the Mustangs, leading them to multiple CHL titles. Nate Miller and Randy Huon have also come back after college to take over the Mustang soccer program, working their butts off to get the boys back into winning some state titles. Being the soccer coach that Nate is, he loves to stay updated on the status of the athletes that have made names for themselves since high school. Abby Wright and Alex Lape were on the Women’s Olympic Soccer Team and helped bring their team to gold. Cameron Malone became a professional baseball player after playing in college and has been as strong as always. Brian Wagers, though he does not play anything professionally, he has become very prominent in the world of football by proving to be one of the best coaches of his time. Will McClanahan really enjoys playing lacrosse and hopes to make a career out of it, but for now needs a job to support his dream. But everyone knows that he will get there because he is already making a name for himself. One sports announcer has given him some extra attention, mainly because they were good friends in high school. Kyle Voisard has always taken the time to put Will’s name out there hoping that it will fall into the right peoples hands. On Kyle’s off days, he enjoys playing golf with his golf pro, Doug Tuke. Doug is the golf pro at Camargo Country Club because ever since Jeremy NeCamp has taken over the club it has been the place to golf for young inspiring golfers with loads of talent. The other golf pros at the country club include Matt Longsworth and Matt Luther. Also joining the old group of friends was Bailey Parkhouse. Bailey married a man that was fabulously rich and decided to become a tennis pro to fill up her free time. Nate Gulick was ready to sign on to the country club family but instead decided to travel overseas to become a basketball star. When Nate returns home, he often likes to take a cycling class in order to stay fit. He was astonished when the instructors walked in and they were Sam Murdock and Cory St. Clair. Nate asked how their lives were going and both men had been very successful in the cycling world and decided to retire early and teach cycling classes. Another member of the cycling class was Karen Bullock. Karen was in charge of Women Writing for (A) Change. She and Megan Stentz have both become influential writers in the city of Cincinnati. Unfortunately Karen took a spill in cycling class and had to be rushed to a doctor. When the doctor walked in, Karen was shocked to see the person behind the mask. Paige Soper had worked her butt off in medical school and became a very good doctor at a very young age. Her nurse for the day was Kaitlyn Brock, another Madeira graduate. As Karen and Paige started talking, Karen found out that Paige started a practice with Molly Christoff and a few of their nurses were Olivia Caesar and Claire Vanderlinde. All the women joked that it was the Madeira graduate practice. As the women were talking, Paige shared that there were a lot of Madeira grads that went to their practice. Among their patients were Michael Tensmeyer, Dennis Walsh who has made multiple trips to Uganda in order to aid hungry children, and Mitch Strotman who has made a living as a party clown for children’s birthday parties. Mitch was the class clown in high school so he decided to carry that over into his career. He was wanted at all of the birthday parties in the city because he could make kids laugh no matter what. A few of Mitch’s upcoming clients were Alexa Beirne, Alexis Carter, and Brenda Garcia-Ramerez. Each of the women has been on a waiting list for months and was hoping to celebrate their child’s birthday with a hilarious clown that they knew years ago. Lucky for them, Mitch makes special deals for Madeira grads. Clowns have always scared Ellen Bauer so instead she has decided to treat her child to a movie of his choice for his birthday. When the movie is over, Ellen is getting ready to leave when she sees a name flash across the screen that catches her eye. Sean Farnam had helped with the special effects for the movie. She sat there for a second, happy that a Madeira grad was going far. She had taken her own great leaps and she was happy to see others do the same. FEATURES After the movie, Ellen’s child got sick on the ride home which landed them in the pediatrician’s office just to make sure. Their regular doctor was out for the week so there was a fill in doctor to take his place. When the doctor walked in it was a blast from the past because Ellen had gone to high school with the woman. The doctor was none other than Lauren Dehan. The two shared success stories while they were waiting for results about the mysterious illness. Lauren told Ellen all about the Madeira grads that she had seen recently. Alex Benson is back in town for the class reunion and he spoke nothing but good things about his last 10 years. Alex has been busy living on the beach, surfing, and doing a job that he enjoys. Lauren had told him how jealous that she was because she never had time for vacations being that she had such a busy schedule. Lauren had also seen Eric Yothment recently at the hardware store. Eric told Lauren all about his successful construction company and how he has a great staff working with him. Travis Asher and Josh Telford are among the many men that make up Eric’s successful team. He talked about working with many architects but known of them were quite like his old schoolmate, Tommy Walter. Eric also told Lauren how successful his friends have been over the years. Chas Young, Josh Serge, and Jon Hotarick went into business together and ran a car shop that could do anything from check ups to “pimping” out a ride. A few of their most trusted clients have been old classmates, Zach Ellsworth and April Plas. April only trusted her old classmates with her pride and joy, her blue Mustang. Zach had rims up on his black Cadillac because all ski instructors have to have nice cars. Zach is very successful at what he does. He does private lessons for celebrities and their children. He got one his most famous clients through Aung Angel. Over the years Aung had become a make up artist for the stars and had offered out Zach’s name whenever a customer wanted private ski lessons. Very recently, Aung made a special trip to New York in order to do make up for Broadway. When she got to the stage, she was assigned the lead male role to make over. David Kunkel walked into Aung’s make up trailer, and she was floored. David had always been an excellent thespian in high school, but she never knew he would make such a name for himself. She felt honored to do his make up for the opening night. What Aung didn’t know was that there was another Madeira alum among the cast that night. CJ Ivester had assisted in writing the play that David was the lead in. When the opening scene took place, David lit up the stage. Coincidentally a small group of David’s old classmates were attending the show as a mini reunion for their group of friends. Sean Kappes, Daniel Erion, and Kyle Liming had all become engineers in their respected field which led them to part ways in the last 10 years. They were all so happy to see each other that they almost forgot to stop by after the show to congratulate David. Though not all of the Madeira theater crew made it to broadway, Collin Benz and Meredith Rush both traveled around with a playhouse for a while until they decided to each settle down in different parts of Cincinnati. While at a party to promote another play that he was starring in, Collin ran into many old faces that he once knew so well. Christian Derenthal was there with his old friend, Tyler Ervin for a night out. Christian and Tyler had become a motivational speaking duo, often using quotes from their old soccer coach, Mr. Unger. Lydia Clark and Alex Elsbernd were also among the crowd. Both of them had seen Collin’s name in the paper and wanted to see how a fellow alum was doing. Alex shared with Collin and Christian his life story of the past few years. He has become a publisher and was currently working with Drew Smith to hopefully create the next great American novel. While Alex was on his way out, he ran into Lauren Christman who seemed to be a quite a hurry. Alex really wanted to see how his old classmate had done for herself and pressed for details about her life. Lauren told him that she had become the youngest female lawyer at the firm where she works. Alex was impressed and asked where she was off to in such a hurry. Lauren briefly explained that she was late to an art gallery exhibit where she had promised to meet Sam Hesketh. Alex accepted her answer and let her go on her way. FEATURES When Lauren got to the art exhibit, she was surprised that she recognized a lot of the work. Two of the artists being shown were Sienna Gregory and Alex Whitton. Many of Madeira’s finest were there to see their old classmates get recognition for excellent artwork. Sam Wallace, Xingchen Xu, Alex Gerard, Yu Zhang, and Carmen Gissel Portes were all there to see the artists receive awards. They were all sitting at home, reading their newspapers one morning when they saw a few familiar names and decided to go and see some artwork. Many former students have taken routes that have been perfect for their mindset on the world. Chandler Stevens joined the Peace Corps after college and has been all over the world to help people in need. Max Medert became the director of Invisible Children to do his part in making the world a better place. Dave Hausler had gone back to Switzerland but was planning on returning for the reunion. Katherine Herndon has become a youth minister and took over Young Life in her community. Michael Gettinger is now a Mixed Martial Arts teacher at the local gym. Other Madeira Alums have chosen slightly different routes. Robert Braun and Jackie Rice each successfully own their own businesses. Robert also coaches little league in his spare time. Another former student that has been successful in owning her own business is Liz North. Liz opened her own boutique after college and has just branched out to owning a second store. David Wood and Tierson Maier each went into similar businesses as their families. David is a candy salesman and Tierson owns her own restaurant. When David gets a tooth ache from eating all the candy that he sells, he has to go to the dentist for a filling. His new dentist just happens to be a girl that he went to high school. Emily Woellner promises to take good care of David’s teeth because she knows how essential his smile is. When David is finished getting his teeth fixed, he heads to the pharmacy for some pain medicine. When he got there, he saw his old friend, Catherine Murray, behind the counter. He briefly said hello and then he was headed home to play some video games. For some reason or another, David was studying the back of the box and found out who was in charge of creating his favorite game. Graham Telford and Greg Simon were both devoted gamers in high school and decided to put their passion to good use. Graham and his sister Elise Telford stayed in close touch because they went into business together. Being that Graham and Greg have become very successful through their video game business they needed someone to manage their money and who better than family? Elise also manages everything in their lives because both boys need a 24-hour schedule in order to stay on top of things. Elise makes appointments with Laurie Phelan at the veterinarians office for the boys to gets their animals yearly check ups. She also put together the boys’ tour schedule. She asked an old friend Katie Spink to come alone on the publicity tour in order to be their make up artist and stylist. An advertising agent also contacted Elise hoping to help promote the boys’ video game. The agent’s name was Justin Lincoln and Elise thought it was a small world because they had gone to high school together. As Graham and Greg started their tour, they ran into many familiar faces and heard lots of success stories. Cole Hayes had gone to one of the video game promotions and told them about the psychology practiced that he joined after college. Ian Huffaker and Matt Miracle also both took the time out of their busy schedules to see old classmates and tell them how excited they are for the class reunion. Ian told Greg that he had run into Meredith Jackson the other day who is now teaching the 1st grade at Indian Hill Schools. He said that Meredith was looking forward to hearing every ones success stories and to see her old crushes. FEATURES Meredith had also gone on to tell Ian that she had many students that were the children of her former classmates. Hannah Henkel, Jung Ha, and Matt Malone all had children that were in her class. With Katherine’s help 5 years ago, Hannah was able to start a Young Life chapter in Indian Hill for students from all over. Matt had become an accountant and through business had reconnected with Cara Mueller, a girl that went to his high school. Cara has been extremely busy with her work, but she still finds time to volunteer for charities like The Free Store Food Bank. One afternoon while Cara was boxing up canned goods, Yeliz Sozeri came up behind her and was overcome with happiness that she was able to see a fellow Madeira graduate giving back to the community. Both women discussed how excited they were for the 10 year reunion which went well. The class of 2009 was happy to be reunited, if only for one night. Good luck to the graduating class of 2009 in wherever your road takes you!
