Experience Works is a national nonprofit organization that helps
unemployed low-income seniors receive training through local
community service assignments. Experience Works began in
1965 as Green Thumb, a rural demonstration project that provided
work for poor farmers. From that modest beginning, it grew to be a
leader in providing training, job placement and community service
for low-income older people. Currently programs are offered to
help mature individuals acquire the training they need to become
employable, enter the workforce, move into new career areas and
earn a decent wage.
Employers who hire Experience Works participants reap many
benefits which save them time and money. Older workers are
talented, dedicated, reliable, well-trained, and versatile employees.
Employers who hire and retain older workers report high rates of
satisfaction with the attributes they bring to the workplace.
The largest program offered by Experience Works is the Senior
Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP). This program,
funded under Title V of the Older Americans Act and administered
by the United States Department of Labor, helps thousands of
low-income individuals, age 55 or older.

Alorica is an inbound call center. We are a customer
service management provider that supports the entire
customer lifecycle, from front-office customer interaction

Haute and we have nearly 20,000 associates worldwide.
What qualities do you look for in your
L to R: Alan Rivkind, James Taylor, Robin Branch, and Celia Case
employees?
Our employees need to have good customer service skills and the ability
to relate well to others. We can train individuals on systems and policy,
but we can’t teach them the basic ability to deal with other people.
Potential employees also have to love people, enjoy interacting with
others, and enjoy dealing with the public.
What are some of the jobs currently performed by
older workers?
Many of our older workers work in customer service positions. We have
full time, part-time and flex scheduling, but most of our staff work full time.
New employees have to be available full time during an eight to nine
week training period.
What have been the greatest changes in your business
in the last ten years?
Ten years ago our computers had green screens (DOS) and the customer
service reps had binders on their desks. We now use a Windows-based
environment. Every department wants their information right away, so our
customer service staff has to deal with multiple windows open on their
monitors simultaneously.
What are the benefits of hiring older workers?
Older workers know the importance of being on time. They have already
learned to keep their cars in working order and watch the weather to
make sure they show up for on time.

with compassion, excellence, and reliability, our Bayada Nurses core
values. We want employees who believe in these values, and who
consistently demonstrate the highest level of skill, competence, and
sound judgement in their work.
What advice would you give to people who want to
work in your industry?
People who work in home care need to be able to put the clients’ needs
above their own. It is critical that people working in home care have the
skills and expertise to provide one-on-one care for people in their homes.
Home care is hard work but very rewarding.
What have been the greatest changes in your industry in
the past ten years?
The demand for our services is greater than ever, and will continue to
grow. There has been a reduction in the number of nurses and therapists
in the workforce, so recruiting them is even more important. There has
been an increase in the number of home care companies, although many
do not offer the depth and breadth of services that Bayada Nurses offers,
and many companies contract with caregivers instead of employing them.
Bayada Nurses puts a great deal of effort into education and training for
our employees, since we are committed to providing our clients with the
highest quality care possible.
What are the benefits of hiring older workers?
Hiring workers who have a good amount of experience behind them
pays off in problem-solving and handling more complex issues.
