Summer Academy 2015
Grayslake School District 46
Grades – Pre-K through current 8th grade.
Dates - Classes will begin on Tuesday, June 9th – Thursday, July 2nd with no school on Fridays.
Times - 1st period 8:15-9:25, 2nd period 9:30-10:40, 3rd period 10:45-11:55
Eligibility - The program is open to all District 46 students who could benefit from remedial
courses or who wish to participate in enrichment courses.
Transportation - Transportation is the responsibility of the parent(s). Bus service is not
available for the Summer Academy.
Attendance Policy - Consistent attendance is recommended throughout the summer academy
program. Teachers will plan activities and prepare materials based on enrollment. Attendance
will be taken just as during the regular school year.
Course Cancellation - District 46 reserves the right to cancel any course that does not meet
minimum enrollment requirements.
Confirmation - Students and parents will receive course confirmation by the first week of June.
Registration - Early registration is encouraged. Classes will be filled in the order in which the
registrations are received. Registrations can be mailed or delivered through your child’s school
to Prairieview School, 103 E. Belvidere Rd., Hainesville, IL 60030 c/o Stephanie Possehl. No
phone registrations will be accepted.
A student’s current grade level is used to register for Summer Academy.
Tuition - There is a tuition fee of $85.00 for each class.
Refunds- There will be no refunds given after June 11, 2015.

Pre-K: Kindergarten Readiness
Duguid
Kindergarten readiness class is designed for children who will be entering Kindergarten in the
fall. We will be using many fun activities to strengthen and develop basic skills such as number
sense, letter and sound recognition, and fine motor control. Come join the fun and prepare for
the best days of your life.
K: Reading, Writing, Sight Words
Cunningham
Students will practice letters and sounds and then use their knowledge to express themselves
through writing. Students will work to strengthen their writing and sight word recognition skills
to prepare them for first grade. We will also read books together and explore some well-loved
children’s literature.
K-1: Math Games

Counting, place value, math facts and more! Students will play a variety of fun and challenging
math games. Whether students need extra practice or enjoy math, this is a great way to maintain
math skills over the summer!
1-3: Monsters, Myths & Mermaids
Knight
Does your student have a love for reading about mysterious creatures, such as singing mermaids
or the Loch Ness Monster? In this class, students will be able to build and strengthen their
reading and listening skills, while exploring these mysterious creatures through various tales.
Then, students will be using their imagination and advancing their writing skills to create a first
hand account of these monster “sightings” by writing short stories, live reports and illustrated
newspaper articles.
2-5: Art Explorations

Delve into the lives and work of prominent historical artists as you gain inspiration to create your
own original artwork. We’ll explore fundamental elements of drawing, painting and design
through the use of watercolor, paint, printmaking and paper mache. Basic art concepts such as
color, shape, texture and line will also be explored.
3-5: Science Experiments

Would you like to learn more about Science using a hands-on approach? In this course, students
will learn about plants, matter and chemical reactions. We will conduct several experiments to
make learning both fun and educational!
5-8: Sculpture World

Students create 3-dimensional artwork using a variety of different materials, such as clay, wire,
and plaster.
9:30-10:40 Enrichment Classes
Pre-K: Who is Ready for Kindergarten Math?

Students will play games and have fun practicing the math skills taught in kindergarten to help
prepare them for their upcoming year! Number recognition, counting, counting on, using ten
frames, basic addition and subtraction skills and more will be used to solidify math skills!
K: First Grade Readiness

This class will include beginning reading, writing, and math skills that are necessary for first
grade preparation.
K-1: Reading, Writing, Craftivity

A reading and writing class that is designed around children’s books! Lessons will include
activities related to the book for the day/week and will be aligned to the Common Core. In
addition to the writing piece, students will be completing crafts to go along with their writing!
1-2 Seas Some Math
Osterndorf
Ahoy mates! Explore the high seas of trade, adventure and pirates. Calculate journeys and
“battle” ships! Learn about sea-faring vessels and put flags up the mast as you master math facts
and skills. Come sail to exotic ports and learn math with games. Opportunities to explore are
afloat!
2-3: Mad Science
Traiforos
Hey kids! Join me for a gaggle of fun, hands-on science activities. Become junior scientists as
you experiment with items like Pop-Rocks, balloons, marshmallows, baking soda and much
more! We’ll make “Elephant Toothpaste,” learn how to make raisins dance and create clouds in
jars. Can’t wait for you to join this messy, but exciting, adventure! **Allergy Alert**
2-5: Travel Through Art

Celebrate different cultures through art! Create aboriginal dot art while exploring the art of
Australia, cherry blossom paintings while exploring the art of Japan, make Aztec suns while
exploring the art of Mexico, explore the art of Central America by weaving and more! Have a
fun summer creating connections between art and world cultures.
3-5: Games, Games, Games
Speck
Are you full of energy and love to be outside? Start the summer off right by learning some new
games, playing old games and inventing new games! Come play tag, four square, hopscotch,
scooter races, kickball! We might even have time for egg and/or balloon tosses to test our skills!
4-8: Creative Faces & Perspectives
Crane
Students will discover different ways to create interesting artwork using peoples faces as their
inspiration. They will also learn how to use one and two point perspective drawing methods to
create houses, buildings and rooms.
6-8: FUNdamentals of Volleyball
Cellucci
Have FUN while learning the FUNdamentals of volleyball! Get ready for four weeks of fun and
friendship – all while learning the skills of volleyball. All skill levels welcome! Sessions will
work on fundamentals and introduce or improve basic skills. Materials needed: lightweight
athletic shoes and kneepads. Elbow pads recommended but not required. Ms. Cellucci is an
experienced middle school volleyball coach and a certified IHSA volleyball referee.
6-8: Forensic Science
Kulig
Students will learn to understand the concepts of forensic science by doing activities to solve a
mystery as they student forensic science lessons. The activities we will complete provide
students with hands-on opportunities to apply science process skills as we learn forensic science
techniques. The students will learn the basics of crime scene investigation, how to analyze print
and trace evidence, ways to identify each individual (fingerprints, blood, DNA, facial
reconstruction, handwriting, voice identification, etc) and the steps that are taken in bringing
evidence to court.

Students will deepen their love for reading while creating treats that will go along with books we
read each day. We will work on our reading skills while relating recipes with the plot and
characters from these selected children’s books. This class will offer children a chance to be

1-5: Wonderful Watercolors

Explore the exciting possibilities while experimenting with liquid watercolor. From creating oil
pastel resists and marbling paper using shaving cream, to using salt, glue and tape, students will
learn various watercolor techniques and will create unique pieces of watercolor art.
3-5: Arts, Crafts and Snacks!

Are you creative, imaginative? Even if you’re not – no worries! Would you like to create
beautiful things out of everyday objects? Is there a snack you would love to try your hand at?
Start your summer off by having fun doing paper mache, decoupage or tie dying. Come give it a

3-8: Everything Clay

Students will create ceramic art pieces that can be used in a variety of different ways! Examples:
piggy banks, phone holder, jewelry box, appetizer dishes, etc.

K-4 Activity Camp
Participating students will take part in a variety of fun athletic activities that will build not only
your child’s athletic skills, but also his/her sportsmanship skills as well. Children in Activity
Camp that are enrolled in morning classes should bring a sack lunch. THIS CLASS HAS A
COST OF $200.
5-8 Activity Camp
