Developing a Spirit of Generosity
in Your Church —Part II
“Nonprofits and churches only have one thing to sell--changed lives.
When they do it well, they are supported,
but when they do not do it well, they go out of business.”
-Not Your Parents Offering Plate: A New Vision for Financial Stewardship, J. Clif Christopher
Our October newsletter is a continuation of my learnings from The
Northern Illinois United Methodist Foundation training on Visionary
Stewardship. Again, it was one of the best and most informative sessions
offered by the Foundation. I came away inspired and challenged to bring
back to First UMC - Des Plaines this good news. I remain committed to
this task, and as we enter into our Stewardship Campaign for 2016, it is
more critical than ever.
As stated last month, unfortunately, the church’s stewardship
commitment is often driven by our need, instead of our mission and
vision. Thus, I asked that we take the time to look at our mission and
vision statement with one thing in mind. Does it tell others what drives
the ministry of this church? What are we doing to change lives in our
community and the world?
(Continued on next page)

(Continued from previous page)
Since October is the beginning of our 2016
Stewardship Campaign, and you are invited to
give generously to the mission of First UMC-Des
Plaines, I want to introduce the second step to
Developing a Spirit of Generosity in Your Church.
According to Dr. Michael Vilardo, the speaker of
the training mentioned above, the second step is
to state clearly your case for ministry. In other
words, we must ask the question of Why? Why do
ministry—is the compelling reason for the
church’s existence. Vilardo states that at this
junction, we must create a document that makes
a compelling case for the church’s existence. We
must be able to articulate with clarity where we
are going. It is my belief that this will not only
create a spirit of generosity, it will also increase
attendance and the membership of the church.
The Messenger — October 2015
Urgency is the opportunity to act now
to change lives. As we work to develop our case
for ministry in this community, let us remember
ministry is about helping not getting. A spirit of
generosity flows from knowing that our giving is
changing lives. Our identity (Why this church),
our mission (ministries we extend), our perceived
urgency (now is the time) and our vision (to
change lives) will lead to a spirit of generosity;
this holds true in any community, be it a wealthy
or poor community.
Again, it is important that as we plan for
the future of the church we keep in mind the
words of J. Clif Christopher from Not Your
Parents Offering Plate: A New Vision for Financial
Stewardship,
“Please hear me when I say that you are not in
business to balance budgets or manage money.
You are in business to change lives for the sake of
the gospel of Jesus Christ__that is it.”11
According to Michael Vilardo to help us
answer the question, why do we existence; we
need to answer the following questions. Why was

What are our milestones? What are our

We must be clear that our “Case for
Ministry” is not the same as the “State of the
Church.” A case for Ministry engages members
with the urgency to act. Michael Vilardo warns
that urgency is not the same as desperation.
Remember: the one who sows sparingly will
also reap sparingly, and the one who sows
bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each
of you must give as you have made up your
mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion,
for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is
able to provide you with every blessing in
abundance, so that by always having
enough of everything, you may share
abundantly in every good work.

Special thanks to John Hardy who has

Lord in eternal life. *Please notify Jeanette by October 28 if you have a loved one
you would like remembered at this special service. Their name will be included in the bulletin.

DAYS TO KNOWING GOD FOR GIRLS. High schoolers’ is titled ONE GOD, ONE PLAN, ONE
LIFE: A 365 STUDENT DEVOTIONAL, by Max Lucado. Kids who received one (or soon will)
include: MONROE, LOGAN and CLARK LAY, TOBY, LEO and ROB JUAREZ, TYLER and
COLIN HARDY, ARRIELLE HARDY, TYLER AND EVAN GOYTIA, LETHRESE and LEVIN
ROSETE, JULIA BOESCHE, LIBBY EDMONDSON, ALLIE TWOREK, JACOB HARTNESS, MATT
EDMONDSON, and JOE HOLMBERG. (If you were missed, look in the literature box near the
bulletin board or ask in the church office.) PASTOR IRENE TAYLOR prepared a welcoming,
inclusive RALLY DAY SERVICE, and what a tasty LUNCHEON we were treated to, after worship!
 I could be very round from church luncheons, but, I get lots of exercise at FUMC, sliding down stair
railings, climbing on the DONATIONS (all kinds!) in the METAL MINISTRY BOX downstairs
(thanks, LAURA MILLER, for that idea), and skating on MIKE DUCE and CHUCK FABIAN’s
freshly CLEANED, STRIPPED, and POLISHED TILE FLOOR in the dining area. JACKIE POFAHL
says that tile dates to the 1950s! I loved scampering among colorful pinwheels turning and
sparkling on the church’s front lawn Sept. 20th week; the LAY BROTHERS planted them there.
Made for the PINWHEELS FOR PEACE PROJECT (Google that for more information), they
commemorate the annual INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE, Sept. 21st. Thanks, pinwheel crafters
and planters! I skip through the RED GERANIUMS planted at Pentecost, MARIGOLDS and new
HOSTAS on the north side of the building, and over fresh MULCH. The hosta flowers are so
fragrant! MARION PUGH provided the hostas, and CHUCK and CHAD FABIAN mulched our
plantings, I was told. Thank you! FUMC looks so fine. After exercising, I enjoy the view from the
comfy wooden seat under the big tree out front. Leaves rustle in the breeze, flowers nod, shady
trees and pretty shrubs surround, sometimes birds alight on the lawn and chirp softly. Come and
sit, too! Let your thoughts drift, treat your senses, thank God and our gardeners, and relax in
FUMC’s own MEDITATIVE GARDEN.
 Of many joys September brought, a few: FUMC welcomed NEW MEMBERS GEORGE, TAMMY
and ALLISON TOMMASI; BILL KNOPF and DAVE DUNCAN are RECOVERING after surgeries;
ESTHER and JOE ESTELA introduced their newborn son LORENZO to delighted churchgoers.
Some sorrows, as well: ROBERT WEBER, in church just weeks ago, passed away August 31st.
Robert’s wife JAN and family and many more celebrated Robert’s life at a very personal, meaningful
memorial service and luncheon, Sept. 5th, at FUMC. “God’s house was packed,” PASTOR IRENE
observed. Please reach out to NANCY, CHAD and CHRIS KINCHELOE as Nancy’s dad CARL
SATTELBERG has died, and to KAREN and JIM GAPINSKI, who lost their son, ED NEWTON.
Looking forward, if you have news to share, e-mail me, Gracie, at: [email protected].

Dear Friends,
Thank you for arranging the Reception after Roberts Memorial Service. I know it was a
busy, busy weekend for you. It was all so nice. Many people complimented me on what a
lovely church we had and how friendly everyone was. I did feel so surrounded by family,
friends that it was a day of joy celebrating the life of a wonderful man. It was so nice to have
the Reception Committee in place could use the church instead of going somewhere else.
Sincerely, Jan Weber
I would like to thank all of the congregation for their cards, best wishes and
prayers for my successful surgery and healing process afterwards. I would also like to
thank Pastor Irene for her visits and prayers. The surgery and recovery has been
much better than the first time. Thanks be to God.

A BOOK REVIEW — By Harolyn Thogersen
‘THE DORITO EFFECT: THE SURPRISING NEW TRUTH ABOUT FOOD AND FLAVOR’
by Mark Schatzker.
New York: Simon & Schuster, c2015. 259 p. hardcover.
If you’re eating all the ‘right things’ but are in a food coma after consumption, if you feel guilty and
unhappy instead of pleasantly satisfied after eating, if you are growing larger, heavier, sick or sicker,
take another look at that food. What’s in it, really? What’s been added? What seems to be missing?
Schatzker says, food producers have altered plants and animals we consume in order to make them
grow larger, faster (or slower), prettier, etc., but, our food is bland! Nutritional value and flavor have
been lost, along with compounds that promote satiety – the signal that further consumption will result
in toxicity. Added flavorings and complicated preparations make bland foods tastier, but they stifle
restraint, causing us to overeat.
How did this happen? In part, through good intentions, inspirations and ignorance, all of which have
adversely affected our food supply. Plants and animals we breed for food have no choice in the
matter, but we do, and Schatzker makes a compelling case for intentionally choosing wholesome
foods. Imagine chicken that takes “gold in the chicken flavor Olympics,” (p. 196), a tomato so
delectable, it emits a ‘tomatoey plume’ when unwrapped (p. 193), a potato so beautiful that “it looks
like an egg yolk with a suntan,” (p. 181), and arugula “potent enough to make you aware of sinus
passages you didn’t know you had.” (p. 188).
