Here we have a late lunch of savoury pancakes and of course some wonderful coffee. We will then transfer you to your hotel where you can relax for the rest of the day. Day 3 Cambodian Elephant Experience (Meals _/L/D) Kratie Today you have 2 choices: Cambodian Elephant Trekking: Today you will be taken to a Phnong minority village where your Cambodian elephant and local guide (Mahout) will be waiting to greet you. The Elephant takes you through some stunning jungle, across rivers and past some local minority farms before ending up at the Trok River for lunch. During lunch the elephants are released and free to wonder around the forest to rest and to scavenge for food. After lunch you then have to go and search for your Cambodian elephant with your guide. The elephant is then taken down to the river for a wash and to cool off during this time you can either watch from the river bank or go for a swim and help wash your elephant, which is great fun! The Elephant Sanctuary: Kratie Today we travel to the nearby Elephant Valley Project, situated about 11km from town. Surrounded by forest and grassland dedicated to the conservation and welfare of the Cambodian elephant this location is ideal for the rehabilitation of the elephants and is one of only a handful of elephant sanctuaries in the world. The sanctuary with the support of the Bunong villagers rescues and treats elephants who have suffered injury and abuse. Enjoy a unique ‘Walking with the Herd for a day’ experience. You will be introduced to the herd of elephants and get to know more about their history, character, behaviour and body language while walking alongside them in their natural environment. You will be able to feed the elephants buckets of bananas and bathe the elephants before watching them cover themselves in mud again. After lunch, you will undertake a walking trek with the Cambodian elephant through the stunning Mondulkiri countryside to a waterfall for a refreshing swim and elephant bath. Evening: Cambodian Elephant Trekking As a wonderful insight into Cambodian culture, after returning from your chosen Cambodian elephant experience we take you to a local village just outside the town. Additional Days: Before the Elephant Experience: Koh Trong Island End of Day 1 Phnong Village Once in Kratie you are free to briefly explore the local market or walk alongside the riverfront, before catching a local ferry across to the Island of Koh Trong. Once we land we will be met by a convoy of moto’s who will carry both yourself and your luggage over the beach and round the island to the hotel. You are free to enjoy the rest of your evening as you wish. Day 2 Koh Trong Island Addition (Meals: B/_/_) Today you have the entire day to immerse yourself into traditional Cambodian life. You can discover the island by bicycle or via the hotels tuk-tuk, the only one on the island. Apart from some good examples of French colonial architecture and the wonderful sunset, Kratie does not offer the tourist too much. Kratie is only used as a stopover unless staying on the Island. Phnong BBQ Koh Trong allows the visitor a deep immersion in an unspoiled part of old Cambodia for travellers fond of nature and discovery. The island is also home of one of the world’s largest and least studied freshwater turtles, raising hopes that the threatened species can be saved from extinction. Also set on the south-west corner of the island, lays a floating Vietnamese village which has been there for generations. Their village moves according to the seasons, stuck to the banks in the rainy season it then glides toward the middle of the river in the dry season and people reach it by boat or wooden gangways. The Vietnamese have their own pagoda on terra firma, just above the village at the south point of the island and true to tradition; they make the best coffee in the province. Option for an extra day in Sen Monorom A Day’s trekking in the Jungle (Meals: _/L/_) We start the day by visiting a traditional Phnong village where you will meet your local trekking guide for the day. You will be taken across the cool open plains before heading into the Jungle. Lunch will be taken by a river giving you the chance to take a swim and cool off before you set off on your final leg of the trek. Once at the finish you will be picked up and taken back to Sen Monorom for a well deserved shower. Alternatively it is possible to hire mountain bikes and discover the red earth tracks on two wheels. Koh Trong Additional Experiences: The below option can be added on after your chosen elephant experience: Local Phnong Home Stay (Meals: _/_/D) Includes all of the Phnong village visit, BBQ experience apart from rather than returning to your hotel you will spend the night with your new family in their traditionally made hut. This experience is not suited for everyone, only the more adventurous as you will be giving up a nice bed to sleep in specially designed hammocks in a slightly smoky environment as it is common to have a fire smoldering for the duration of the night in the huts. There is no better way to experience their way of life. © See Cambodia Diferently Sambok Mountain Page 4
