2011 OCTOBER NEWSLETTER.pub - Callala Beach Progress
OCTOBER 2011
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Hey great to see some warm weather happening, bring on
summer.
A well attended information night was held on the 26th September at the Callala Beach Community Hall. The aim of the night was to
explain the Draft Shoalhaven Local Environmental Plan to the local
residents and to give the locals an opportunity to raise any concerns
with the Council representatives. The SLEP is a very important document for our community as it sets out the land use zonings for all of the
Shoalhaven. These zonings dictate what can and can not be built on all
of our properties. The SLEP also includes such controversial items such
as building height limits.
The meeting was run by two very helpful and knowledgable
Council officers who presented an informative powerpoint presentation
and fielded a variety of questions from the public. A good sized group
of locals attended and it was good to see some new faces with some
new opinions and views. Generally it appears that the new zonings are
very similar to the existing zonings so there is no need for any great
concern. The Progress Association took on board some of the matters
raised at the meeting and the two recent monthly meetings when formulating our submission to Council on the SLEP. Full details of the submission to Council are given later in the newsletter.
More progress has been made on the Callala Strategic Plan with
Council appointing a development officer, Melissa Hedger to work on
the project. Melissa hails from Callala Bay and we look forward to her
input and assistance.
See you at the next meeting on the 14th November.

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE OCTOBER MEETING OF

Trevor Smith has received three new doggy doo bags and dispensers.
The dispensers to be erected during the next month. The purchase
was very good value as it was an introductory offer. New dispensers
are more robust than the old ones which were vandalized.
The draft SLEP was discussed at length and it was decided to make
a submission to Council recommending several changes to the zonings.
Pat has been working on applying for grants for the construction of a
composting toilet at Myola break wall. Apparently we need an
approved DA before we can apply for some grants. This is to be
pursued.
It was suggested that the Rural Fire Brigade be encouraged to use the
website for communication. Greg to discuss with Dave and Jenny
Lawther. Perhaps we can put up info on their behalf if they are
constrained by regulations.

SUBMISSION TO SHOALHAVEN CITY COUNCIL ON
THE DRAFT SHOALHAVEN LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL
PLAN
The following letter has been submitted to Council. We would appreciate any comments on the suggested changes.
The Callala Beach Progress Association has spent considerable time and energy over the last two months to advise the local community of the new
SLEP and gain their comments. This has included a letterbox drop and the
organisation of a community information night last month which was presented by two of Council’s very competent officers.
Our monthly meeting was held on the 10th October and based on the information gathered the meeting moved that Council be approached to make the
following changes to the local zonings. We therefore request that you review
the following:
1. It is our opinion that an R2 ‘Low Density Residential’ zoning would be
more appropriate for Myola rather than the proposed RU5 ‘Village’ zoning.
We consider that the R2 zoning still allows sufficient development of the
area and that the ‘Village’ zoning is not suitable for a small community located so close to the larger Callala Beach.
2. We suggest that Council consider increasing the area of B1
‘Neighbourhood Centre’ to encompass more of the land surrounding Parkes
Crescent Park, i.e. land around Parkes Crescent. This will allow for long
term growth of the business centre of Callala Beach.
We recommend that the ‘Sensitive Biodiversity Zoning’ which applies to
residential blocks on the south west and north east sides of Myola, as well as
the Flower Farm to the north east of Myola (114 Myola Rd) be removed.
The zoning over domestic blocks appears unreasonable as is the zoning over
the Flower Farm which may affect the owner’s right to clear more land for
farming purposes.
We look forward to your serious consideration of these suggestions and
working with you to advise the local residents of any changes.

WILD ABOUT WHALES
With whales a common sight at the moment and in fact causing a few
close encounters with local boaties we though it would be a good time to
provide some information to help identify these wonderful creatures.
Some of the most common whales seen in our waters are shown below.
Southern Right Whales
Description:
Southern right whales are robust and have a strongly arched mouth and
long baleen plates. Large white bumps (callosities) occur on top of the
head, along the edges of the lower jaw and above the eye. Southern Right
whales have no dorsal fin. The flippers are large and rounded, and the
flukes have a broad, smooth rear margin separated by a deep notch. The
flukes are often lifted out of the water as the animal dives. Southern
Right whales are predominantly black, but some may have patches of
white.
8
9
Humpback Whale
Description:
Humpback whales have a stocky body with a broad head and long flippers up to one third of the total body length. The dorsal fin is small, often
sitting on a 'hump' in the back. Knobby protuberances with bristle hair
and often with barnacles growing on them, occur on the head, jaws and
flippers. The lower jaw has a rounded projection near its tip. The rear
margin of the tail flukes and the leading edge of the flippers are scalloped. The body is black on the back and white underneath and sometimes on the sides. The flippers and underside of the tail flukes are
usually white. The baleen plates are black.

CALLALA BEACH
PIZZERIA & RESTAURANT
Kellie and Jeff Sprowles are the new owners of Saluté Callala, formerly known as Callala Beach Pizzeria. Kellie grew up at Culburra and
at the age of 16 moved to Sydney to pursue her career where she studied and became a qualified chef, leading one of Sydney’s finest dining
venues of it’s time.
In 1991 Kellie and Jeff decided to move back to the area to be amongst
family and a slower paced life to raise their children. They have now
lived in ‘The Bay’ for over 20 years and since moving to Callala they
have enjoyed a multitude of career changes, including owning and operating two local businesses, Callala Videos and an Ice Cream Van.
After 16 years of eating at ‘Franks’ when Frank and Bernadette retired
the family missed it so much they figured something just had to be
done, Callala really needed the shop to re-opened.
Their decision to open Saluté was a family one, with their three children Maddison, Sam and Ellie being an integral part of the restaurant’s
daily operation. With Sam just finishing year 12 and no real career
path determined yet, they felt it would be a good opportunity for the
whole family, whilst encouraging the kids to gain a solid work ethic.
Both Kellie and Jeff continue with their ‘day jobs’. Jeff is a printer
with Nowra Printing Company whilst Kellie enjoys her ongoing career
as a licensed real estate agent with Callala First National.
They have been overwhelmed by the level of local support since opening the restaurant and are proud to say that Frank and Bernadette, (who
are also family friends) were the first patrons to dine in.

CALLALA BUSHCARE REPORT
John Hawksworth
Callala Bushcare Group looks after several patches of natural area
bushland in the Callala-Myola area. Without exception these sites are
threatened by the invasion of exotic species and without exception the
threats are worst where housing or a road borders the bushland. It
shouldn’t take much thought to work out where the weeds are coming
from.
When Bushcare takes on a dense infestation
of weeds such as for example the lantana,
senna (cassia) and japanese honeysuckle
thickets along the Lackersteen St edge of
Callala Creek Bushland Reserve, we realize
we are making a long term commitment.
However well we weed on our first pass
there will always be re-growth to come back
to.
Our first efforts along Lackersteen St were
in 2007 and we have been back several
times. Most recently in October we completed a sweep, we began in June at the
footbridge, finishing behind the houses at the corner of Lackersteen
and Sheaffe Streets. Council’s aboriginal bushcare workers are now
working along the Sheaffe St side of the Reserve. They also intend to
spray a patch of japanese honeysuckle near Watt St. So the Bushcare
Group will shift its attention to our sites on the other side of Callala
Creek for a while.
Our session on 18 October involved the completion of a plant species
list for Sir Henry Crescent Bush Park in Callala Beach. We are also
progressively installing signs in the Park to identify key plant species
and birds that inhabit the bush. Please let us know what you think of
the signs.

FISHING NEWS
Hi fellow fishos,
Spring is here and the fishing is about to get interesting again. I am looking forward to a good year to come.
The Callala RSL Fishing Club year has just ended with the first meeting
for next year being held next weekend.
Looking back on the last year, in retrospect, it was pretty disappointing.
Our attendances were mainly good with a lot of good catches from a lot
of consistent anglers, but the big fish eluded us, with the exception of
Luke Ganderton’s 30kg kingfish.
The junior anglers were missing. Only Blake Deeves and Anna Gardner
fished consistently. Both well deserving of awards they won. Blake winning the Junior Male Deep Sea Award and Anna winning the Junior
Female BRE Award. Congratulations to Anna and Blake.
The game fishing section was a complete wash out, with not a single
game fish being weighed in. The first time this has happened to my
knowledge since the club began. The other winners were as follows:
Ladies Deep Sea Winner: Myrna Burnes Runner Up: Tania Deeves
Ladies BRE Winner: Jan White
Men’s Deep Sea Winner: Alan Barnes Runner Up: Wayne Peck
Men’s BRE Winner: Shane Green Runner Up: Darren Gardner
Club Champion: Alan Barnes
The biggest fish of species winners were:
Alan Barnes: Trevally 0.40kg and Marwong
1.62kg, Steve Robinson: Drummer 1.94kg,
Groper 2.91kg and Luderick 0.49kg, Jason
Delaney: Mulloway 1.98kg and Tailor 1.02kg,
Shane Green: Flathead 2.78kg, Myrna Barnes:
Leatherjacket 1.04kg, Shane McMillan:
Salmon 2.50kg, Toby Coulthard: Snapper
3.50kg, Wayne Peck: Striped Tuna 3.91kg,
Anna Gardner: Whiting 0.27kg, Luke Ganderton: Kingfish 30.00kg being biggest fish
caught overall and biggest of species, I think
this will be the hardest to beat next year. Congratulations to all the above
winners and good luck to all in next years competition.
Well that is it for another month. Go get ‘em guys! Would be fishing.

CALLALA BEACH
VOLUNTEER RURAL FIRE BRIGADE
Over the past month there were no callouts.
With the current weather patterns gradually settling to dryer periods it is
very likely that the hazard reductions that are planned to take place in the
Callala Beach/Bay, Culburra and Currarong areas will
now take place over the coming months. In the local
area hazard reduction burns are planned for the areas
behind Roskell Road, the end of Quay Road, near the
boat ramp at Myola and at Myola just before the
Flower Farm opposite the caravan park. Before any
hazard reduction burns take place notice will be given
to residents by letter box drops and signs in the notice
board at least 24 hours in advance of the burn.
Training has tapered off to local and brigade exercises and with the start
of the fire season there is the possibility of the many hazard reductions
planned for the area going ahead. These HR’s are the best training available to prepare members for the fire season.
The brigade held an Open Day at the station on Saturday 1st October with
many demonstrations being held for the public. Handouts concerning fire
preparation, prevention and rules were available.
Permits are now required until end of March 2012 for all fires in
the open. Residents requiring permits can contact the Permit Issuing Officers on 4446 5728 or 4446 5455 (Myola). Please give the Permit Officers
a few days notice when requesting a permit. Details on permit requirements will be given at the site inspection. Briefly, the permit holder must
notify their neighbours and Fire Control (4424 4424 during office hours )
24 hours before burning. It is advisable to have water available, the size
of pile to be no bigger than 1.5 metres across and a responsible person
must remain with the fire at all times until it is extinguished. If water is
not available then an alternative method of extinguishing the fire must be
available. This could be a tractor, loader or handtools to make a fire
break to prevent the fire from spreading. New members are always welcome. Please contact Captain Jenny Lawther on 44465728.
