21st Street Home Gets Updated
Improvements to the 21st Street
Home are progressing nicely, all
because of you. Through donations
from our annual appeal which
focused on our 21st Street Home, we
now have new carpet in the common
areas and the residents’ rooms. The
main living space and hallway
received a new coat of paint to
freshen up those areas. Our 21st
Street Home has a new medications
refrigerator and there is a new
refrigerator in the kitchen, as well.
Thank you!

Variety Club Van at Horizons
A bit of sunshine was delivered to the 21st Street Home in December of 2013 when Variety Club
officials drove from Des Moines to Emmetsburg with a new van for Horizons Unlimited. Wild Rose
Casino & Resort and the Palo Alto County Gaming Development Corporation (PACGDC) partnered to
make this new van possible for our members at Horizons.
Welcoming the new van in this photo are, to the left of the van: Audrey Hansen, Horizons staff at
21st Street; Travis Dvorak, Asst. General Manager at Wild Rose; Laurie Schneider, Horizons
CFO; Mary Cooper, Horizons board member; Pam Beschorner, Horizons Human Resources Manager;
and Audrey Niemann, Wild Rose Human Resources Manager. Checking out the inside of the van
are: Sheri McMichael, Executive Director at Variety Club of Iowa; Terry Hoskins, Horizons member;
Jim Frederick, Horizons member; Jack Parish, Horizons member; and Dan Brennan, Horizons
member. Celebrating to the right of the van are: Amy Rubel, Vice President of Operations at Wild
Rose Resorts; Deb Davis, Horizons Associate Director; Bill Lapczenski, PACGDC board member; Skip
Wallace, PACGDC board member; Holly Carter, Horizons 21st Street Manager; Jennifer Meyer,
Horizons Development Coordinator; and Ron Askland, Horizons CEO.
Horizons Unlimited thanks Wild Rose Casino & Resort, Palo Alto County Gaming Development
Corporation, and Variety Club of Iowa for making this possible. Our members love their new van!

Lynda Gonzales
& Paige Metzger
New Direction for Day Hab
The Day
Habilitation program,
or commonly known
as Day Hab, at
Horizons Unlimited
has new leadership
with Paige Metzger,
Day Hab Coordinator,
and Lynda Gonzales
Day Hab Assistant.
Day Hab will be
expanding their space
at the Job Training
Center to allow for a
variety of group and
individual projects.
Some projects will
have members
working on iPads to
obtain skills and
knowledge for daily
living.
Paige has already
started her goal to get
the members out and
doing more things
with community trips
to area attractions,
like the grotto in West
Bend and the tulip
festival in Orange
City.
June is “Fitness
Month” for Day Hab
members. Fitness
minutes will be
tracked every day and
members will be in
the running for
weekly prizes.
Day Hab will also
be visiting nursing
homes and
volunteering in the
community, especially
for RAGBRAI coming
to Emmetsburg for an
overnight stay on July
21st.
“Bringing our
members into the
community is so
rewarding,” reflects
Paige Metzger.
Wild Rose Recycles and Saves
“Our employees
recognize the
value of recycling
and have been
enthusiastic in
their support.”
—Amy Rubel,
Vice President of
Operations

Wild Rose Casino
and Resort has
announced the
successful year one
results of their
expanded recycling
efforts at the
Emmetsburg
property. Working
with Horizons
Unlimited, a local
leader in recycling, a
plan of action was
formed. In January
2013, employees
were introduced to
the expanded
recycling program.
The company placed
labeled recycling
containers in all
offices and key areas,
kicked it off with a
recycling challenge
between departments
and celebrated the
holiday season with a
wreath competition
that used recycled
materials. As a result
of their efforts, daily
garbage pick-ups
Po ssi b i l i ti e s
were reduced to three
times per week.
Garbage costs were
reduced by $25,000 in
year one.
Prior to the
recycling initiative,
Wild Rose had already
launched other green
measures on property
including
biodegradable
environmentallyfriendly cleaners
inside the facility and
outside,
biodegradable and low
sulfur fertilizers and
chemicals are applied
to lawns while using
facility pond water to
irrigate the lawn areas
and planting beds.
“We are proud of
the significant
progress we have
made to reduce,
reuse, and recycle
materials in our
efforts to go green.
Our employees
recognize the value of
recycling and have
been enthusiastic in
their support,” stated
Amy Rubel, Vice
President of
Operations at Wild
Rose.
Wild Rose Casino
and Resort employs
275 people and is the
gaming entertainment
destination for over
500,000 guests
annually.
Your organization
can see significant
savings with your
waste, just like Wild
Rose. If you are ready
to go green, Deb
Davis, Horizons’
Associate Director,
can work with your
business to make
recycling happen.
