As you should know by now the September Tour is an overnighter to Ft. Bragg on Saturday and Sunday, September 24th and 25th. We will be staying at the Best Western Vista Manor, 1100 N. Main St., Ft. Bragg, Ca. Call 707-964-4776 to get a room. ESCA has six rooms held. The rooms have 2 queen beds. The discounted price (plus tax) is $129.99. Please email [email protected] , after you have booked your room. And, if you need to cancel, please let us know, as soon as possible. Sorry the motel has a “no smoking - no pet policy”. If you want to take your dog, the Surf Motel and Gardens, about 2 miles south of the Best Western, does accept dogs. The tour will be a leisurely drive up Highway One on Saturday, which may include stops at Pt. Arena Light House, Point Cabrillo Light House, the Sea Ranch Chapel, and a cruise through the town of Mendocino. I’ll save you the suspense. The answer is - nothing. The numbers are way too small for statistical validity. So, like any data analyst worth his or her salt, after acknowledging that, I’ll proceed to present my observations and discuss them anyway. First I looked at numbers of drivers per event. As you can see, through June the autocross attendance figures compared very well to last year. Since then there has been a drop off. At the August event Ron had to scramble to post enough workers to the track positions. Worrisome trend? Too soon to say. In words spoken by generations of data analysts - we need to continue monitoring. Has there been a change year to year in the dedication of the participants? I measured the percent of drivers who attended three or more of the first five events. In 2015 52% of drivers made three or more events. In 2016 this percent has dropped slightly to 50%. I have no explanation for this, since we ran the events exactly the same way in both years. I have a disclaimer though - I tried to correct for drivers who competed in multiple classes during the year, but some might have slipped through to lower the dedication statistic. Another note from the wonderful world of numbers; Cars and Coffee events are starting to proliferate alarmingly. Alongside the well established Marin Cars and Coffee continued on the next column Page 2 which has met on the first Sunday of the month in Novato for at least 5 years and in Sausalito before that, we now have Santa Rosa Cars and Coffee meeting at Coddingtown on second Sundays, and to boot, a Petaluma Cars and Coffee on third Sundays at the Washington Square Shopping Center. This last event is limited to cars of 1973 vintage or older, which, since I don’t own a car of that age, I personally find unreasonable. PLEASE WELCOME NEW MEMBERS . . . . Under a Wedding Bells listing it was stated that Bill & Beth Katz were wed in New York and there was to be a party for ESCA members in September. And under Welcome New Members were Barbara McCrory and Ron Caviglia. Awhile Ago in Pit Stop By Bob Jenkins September 1990 On the front page was an article and results of an August Autocross, which the writer stated was the third closed club event and the turn out was not so great with only 21 drivers. Top time was set by Dale Hartman in a Corvette, followed by Lee Sutton in an Opel GT, and Francesca Donig in a Corvette. Of the 21 drivers only 5 are still members. A Hawaiian Holiday article by Ted Dunlap talked about the ESCA Summer Party held in the Karen & Blain Hendrix back yard. Besides the great food and company there were fun games to play, such as a wheelbarrow Funkhana, with water balloon pineapples being passed, a coconut cracking chair, where the one partner blew up a balloon and the other partner sat on it to pop it. And finally a hula dance where one partner had to have 10 revolutions of a hula-hoop, before running to shut of the clock. There were two classes with wheelbarrows for the adults and a 4-wheel wagon for the children. And yes the children took top time of day. A Rallye School article by the Beard talked about a Course Marker School after the next meeting and a paper Course Marker rallye after the school. The paper Course Marker Rallye was to be part of ESCA’s club rallye series. There was also an up to date standings listing showing Blain Hendrix in first place, followed by John Troup in second, Fredric Blue in third, Gary O,Connor in fourth, Terry O’Connor in fifth and Marci Jenkins in sixth. A Brunch Tour article by the Beard talked about a short run stating from Coddingtown and heading out to Duncan Mills, for brunch at the Blue Heron Inn. A long Autocross article by Chris Orlie entitled “The season autocross finale: paying attention is more important than ever”, talked about ESCA’s final autocross of 1990. He stated that each run would consist of two timed laps and each lap would run the course differently. The morning fog burned off as the drivers meeting began, and by the time the first car took the line the asphalt had begun to warm. The course lent itself to the higher horsepower cars with a pair of long straights and some long sweepers. The race tire classes were won by Angelo Klavin (GTA-R), Craig Hammond (GTB-R) and John Schliemann (GTC-R). Street went to Chuck Banks (GTA-S), Brent Werder (GTB-S) and Jiro Tulley (GTC-S). Our open class was taken by just 0.077 seconds by Blaine Pope. With this event behind us, we have just two more events left to decide the championship leaders. As was emailed out, the double points event was moved up from October to September, so be ready for next month where we will be running the track in both directions. RallyCross??? It was great to see these twisty roads full of ESCA members and their cars. At the end of the drive the 30 attendees were greeted by a friend of Gerry’s that has an amazing collection of Mercedes Benz automobiles. In ‘98 I bought another new Honda Accord. Then in ‘03 I bought a new Nissan 350Z, and finally in 2014 a new Lexus IS 350 F Sport. I have never owned a V-8, but I did get to drive Terry Eaton’s white Cobra for three straight days. In between ESCA events in 1984 I married fellow ESCA member, Marci Tarleton, our only children have been several cats, which seem to live very long lives in our home, the present cat is a lady named Lauren. I participated in ESCA events in 1963 and joined in March of ‘64, which is the same year I started putting on rallyes. Rallyes are "my thing", having put on well over a hundred, but I like all ESCA events. The first of my many terms as an ESCA Board member was as Chairman in 1966. My hobbies, besides ESCA, are photography, and ZONC, a Datsun-Nissan Z Car Club, I have belonged to for 42 years. As this is my 52nd anniversary as an ESCA member, I thought it was about time for another profile. I was born in Stockton California and moved around Northern California a lot until starting school in San Francisco. Our family (including two younger sisters) next moved to Santa Rosa in 1954 and I graduated Santa Rosa High School a few years later. I next did three years in the U.S. Navy, stationed around the Washington D.C. area. Returning to Santa Rosa, I tried my hand at carpentry, before getting a steady job at the Post Office, from which I retired in 2001. My first car was a hand painted yellow and black ‘29 Model A Ford and my second was a ‘49 Chevrolet two door, which I sold when I joined the Navy. I then just drove Navy vehicles until near the end of my enlistment when I bought a ‘58 Peuguot 403 with a moon roof, which started me into foreign vehicle. I drove the Peuguot home to California, but soon started my new car period with a ‘62 Volvo 544, but I had to have seat belts put in, which was good because this was my "crash and burn" period and the Volvo took 6 crashes and kept running. My next car was a new ‘67 Volvo 122S, and it came with seat belts. I added Buick rims to go from 4” tire width to 6”. Then in ‘70 I fell in love and bought a new gold Datsun 240Z, which started my Japanese period. Next came a new ‘82 Honda Accord, followed by a new ‘93 Acura, which got autocrossed continued in next column Page 8 www.empiresportscar.org August Tour to Marin Cars and Coffee By John Perlis Three cars met up at Cars and Coffee for the tour. Marci and Bob came in their Lexus IS350 F Sport. Chuck Banks was there with his Fiero, into which he has fit a supercharged V6. Finally, I brought the Birkin. There were lots of cars to see, although the number of really exotic rides was down some from previous months. My favorite was a beautiful yellow 60’s Lotus Elite, lovingly maintained and restored to perfection. The fact that I would have to lop 8 to 10 inches of height off my body to be able to fit inside and actually work the pedals, has not seemed to cool my ardour for this gorgeous fiberglass monocoque chassis with the Coventry Page 9 Climax engine. If only Colin Chapman had been taller! After enjoying looking at other people’s cars, we got back in our own and headed for the coast. We were accompanied on the ride by Alex Delzel, who joined ESCA at the August 16 meeting, and, who drove an E46 M3. Our route included back roads out of Novato, joining Route 1 just north of Pt. Reyes Station. In between the requisite episodes of “sharing the road” with bicycles, we made good time up the coast to just south of Tomales, where we turned east again, eventually rolling into Petaluma just about noon. Alex left the group in Petaluma, and the rest of the party plus my wife, Karen, and Bonnie the Corgi, had a great lunch at Rosso Pizzeria. The tour ended after lunch. In the 1920s. . . . Speculators developed an immense wooden auto racetrack near the railroad tracks on East Cotati Avenue, and drivers and fans converged from far and wide. This was Photo from the family collection of Marci Jenkins'. however, prior to the completion of the Golden Gate Bridge (1937) and the trip required a series of ferry and railroad connections. Not enough fans could manage the trip and the track was soon a financial failure. The lumber salvaged from its demolition produced several of the buildings still in use in downtown Cotati.
