the corner of Stony Point Road and Occidental Road,

FAST TIMES
By John Schliemann
Hi Everyone,
June, that means we’re almost halfway through the year!
ESCA held its 2nd autocross of the year on April 25th. Jim
Winston and Craig LaMothe were the chairmen of the
event. Top Time of the Day (TTOD) went to Ace Robey,
driving his brand new Blue BMW M3, 2nd place went to Alex
Ivakhnenko, driving his Green 2006 Lotus Elise, followed by
Jim Winston in 3rd, driving his Black 240z. Great job guys!
Great track, and a great day was enjoyed by 66 competitors
even though the day started out wet. It dried out in time for
autocrossing and turned out to be a really nice day. Thank you
Brooke for loaning me a dry pair of socks after getting mine
wet from sweeping off the track in the morning before the
autocross. I think I drove faster that day with one blue sock
and one purple sock.
On, May 8th, I had the opportunity to go to my first Track
Day at Thunderhill. Blain Hendricks and I participated in
the Hooked on Driving’s 5-mile course. The day was full of
track time and classroom debriefing after each session. I was
lucky that I got one-on-one instruction throughout the day.
We did a lead-follow and my instructor also rode in my car,
she provided coaching to help improve my driving skills. It
was extremely educational and I learned some good driving
tips to help increase my speed and handling of my car for
future autocross events. Blain and I both had a lot of fun and
would recommend it to other club members.
On another note, I was lucky enough to purchase the Holy
Grail of Motorcycles a, 1996 Harley Davidson Bad Boy,
FXSTSB. It’s in absolutely perfect mint condition, it has been
stored and not driven for 15 years. It belonged to my Uncle
Rick, and so now I’m enjoying my midlife-crisis purchase. So,
if anyone’s interested, I’m selling my other two motorcycles
a 2003 Yamaha VStar Custom Street Bike and a 2003
Yamaha WR250F Dirt Bike. Both are in excellent condition,
please contact me if you’re interested.

Next month is the Annual Hoopa Hill Climb on July 25th
and 26th in Hoopa, CA. Several club members and I will be
going up on the 24th, for the Friday night tech inspection. Get
your hotel reservations now if you’re planning on going. I’m
very excited and can’t wait for the race, it’s something I always
look forward to. Lynn Miller should have his Chevy Colbalt
all highly modified and ready for Hoopa. We should start
seeing him driving it at autocross events.
This, unfortunately, means that anyone going to the Hill
Climb can not attend the July 25th Tour to Point Reyes led
by Jake Renew. I'm sorry to miss it and hope you all have fun!
ESCA is planning an autocross event on May 23rd, that Art
Battles and Kim Smith are the chairmen of, which will happen
after I’ve turned in my article, so stay tuned for an update in
next months’ newsletter. Hope you all plan on attending.
See ya at the track.

Kevan Jurin's CorV8
Woes of Registering a
Unique Vehicle without a full VIN.
By Kevan Jurin
As some of you may know I bought the 1966 Corvair Corsa
from former ESCA member Scott Cattell a number of years
back. Well at long last the car is ready for the road and also
the always-fun trip to the DMV. Well I had all the paperwork
I thought I would need, made my appointment and off I went.
As it turned out the DMV had no record of the car in their
system so I got to start at square one. Not too painful until they
told me I needed a VIN verification. The car had no tag in the
door, or in the back of the car where the engine compartment
used to be. My Corvair has been modified a bit in that it is now
sporting a mid-engine V-8. Now all the paperwork I had had
the VIN on it and I did a bit of research and did find the partial
VIN stamped on the chassis but I was not sure the DMV would
buy off on this. I made a trip back to the DMV and spoke to the
VIN verification guy (you can actually drive right up and they
will come out with no appointment needed) and he explained
that the DMV was not allowed to look under the car and that
I would have to go to the highway patrol. I called the highway
patrol and the earliest they can get me in is 2 months from the
day I called. I made the appointment, poured a stiff drink and
thought “there must be an easier way”.
A few days later I go to an ESCA club meeting and tell
my tale and got some great advice (sorry I forgot your name)
about private registration services. I went online and many,
many people with hot rods that have been built using assorted
parts and chassis recommended a woman named Donna Leek
and she runs a business called Professional Registration
Services. I emailed her and explained my situation and she
asked me to send her scans of my paperwork along with pictures
of the partial VIN. A few hours later she replied and said she
could get me registered for a fee of $150.00 due after I get the
plates and that she wanted me to send her the paperwork I had.
I sent it off and hoped I would get my plates soon.
A week and a half goes by and I get a call from the highway
patrol about my upcoming appointment. I told them I would
like to get a new tag put in my car and that I only had a partial
VIN but I had someone working on getting my registration
through the DMV. The officer told me I most likely got scammed
because there is no way a civilian could get a VIN verification
done just by pictures and that I should get my paperwork back
ASAP and let them take care of it.
So in a panic I fire off an e-mail to Donna thanking her for
her time and effort but I would like to have my paperwork back
and that if she was not able to register the car that was fine. She
promptly replied with “Your license plates are in the mail along
with your paperwork. The DMV took the original pink slip but
you should get your title in two to three weeks”. Stunned I sent
off a thank you and in two days I had my plates, registration and
all my old paperwork minus the original pink slip. I still have
my appointment with the CHP to get the VIN tag so anyone
who may register this after me will not have issues but I found
her services to be well worth it. I have read many stories on
the internet about registration nightmares but this was about
the easiest way to handle a unique situation and well worth the
money, unless of course you really enjoy going head to head
with the DMV and CHP.

AUTOCROSSERS
THE MEETING
By Bob Jenkins
The sun was shining brightly and the road which lead out
of the Santa Cruz Mountains was empty of traffic. The black
289 snake with its two occupants was just motoring down the
empty four lane road in the slow lane at a leisurely 65 miles per
hour, which was the posted speed limit. The Cobra, or snake as
it was fondly known as, had no radio and conversation was not
easy over the roar of the engine, but the driver’s hand motion
to the navigator to check to the rear set the event into motion.
Checking the rear view mirror (as looking back would have
been un-cool) the navigator saw the out -line of the yellow
corvette roadster coming up in the fast lane. Using the mirrors
driver and navigator closely followed the approach of the
corvette. As the corvette (now recognizable as a 427) pulled
along side it slowed and matched the pace of the snake.
The occupants a pretty blonde girl and a dark haired young
man wearing black driving gloves, looked over and smiled. The
corvette driver checked as to “How the snake was running”.
The answer from the snake driver was “Just fine”. After a pause
the corvette driver stated, “That he had always wanted to try a
snake, but as he had just got his license back, maybe this wasn’t
the right time.” The snake driver just smiled back, and after
a short pause the corvette driver gave a little salute and then
slowly motored ahead.

A Welcome New Members article listed 6 new members
and Dan Clary is the only one who is still a member.
The 2005 ESCA Board was listed as Chairman Kevan
Jurin, Vice-Chairman Paul Ferrin, Secretary Marci Jenkins,
Treasurer Claudia Quinlivan, and Ex-Officio Blain Hendrix.
TEN YEARS AGO IN PIT STOP
June 2005
By Bob Jenkins
On the cover was an announcement for a June ESCA
Autocross at the airport. The cost was $30 per driver and only
members allowed on site. Also, on the cover was an article
about a tour to the Wine Country Classics at Infineon
Raceway in June, but due to a small sign-up there were no
ticket discounts and no car corral.
In a Kevan’s Corner article the Chairman talked about
the first autocross of the season, and asked members to step up
and chair an autocross. He also asked members to come to the
meetings, as that is where a lot of the work gets done. He also
thanked the members for all the work done at the autocross.
A First ESCA Autocross - A Great Success article by
Paul Ferrin talked about the 38 entrants and the great weather.
A results sheet showed top time was taken by Scott Torgerson
in his 240Z, followed by Kevan Jurin in the Rotus Super 7,
while Frank Jurin, also in the Rotus, was third, and Justin
Bowen, in his 240Z, was fourth fastest. Of the 38 drivers, 25
are no longer members.
An ESCA Wins Again article stated that the contestants
named an ESCA Rallye “Best Variety Rallye of the Year” for
2004. It also stated it was the 26th time an ESCA Rallye had
won the award in the 44 year history of the award which
was presented by the Northern California Sports Car
Council. (The Council no longer exists.)
A Mendocino Tour article by Linda Jurin, was about the
club’s run up the coast to Mendocino. In the ESCA 4-car group
were the Jurins (Corvette), the Jenkins (350Z), the Mugeles
(SLK 350 Mercedes) and, the Seratts (BMW 740). The Hill
House Inn in Mendocino was the over-night stop. The route
home took the group over to Booneville and to the Anderson
Valley Brewery.
