We are going into today’s game full of confidence after a string of good performances and results. The tie has a real buzz about it and in my opinion is the pick of the FA cup ties at this stage of the competition and will hopefully attract a bumper crowd. I’m a big believer that each year a North East non-league team will do well in the competition and last year we had our own heartbreak when we were robbed at home to Telford but you just had to sit back and admire what our opponents achieved and hope that this is going to be our year. It’s going to be a very difficult game and a benchmark on where we are as a team but we have the quality in our side to certainly cause an upset. Competition for places is fierce and the lads are playing with real confidence which is great to watch. If we are going to get anything out of the game we will need to be at our very best and also have the supporter’s right behind us which I’m sure you will as the crowds this season have been fantastic. We have a few injuries which we will assess before the game but the main thing is that the players who play do themselves justice and continue the early season form they are showing. Enjoy the game and get behind the lads. Jay www.spennymoortownfc.co.uk Twenty to Tackle Are you an expert on the FA Cup? Do you know your Wembley from your Wimbledon? Moors recorded their fourth league win on the spin after a hard fought victory over Ossett Albion at The Brewery Field on Tuesday night. Moors are now up to third and remain unbeaten in all competitions this season. Manager Jason Ainsley named the same team that beat Clitheroe 5-0 on Saturday and they almost caught Albion cold inside the first minute when Liam Henderson’s flick on sent Nathan Fisher clear but his shot was saved by the feet of keeper Brett Souter. Kallum Griffiths tried an audacious 40yd volley which went just over, then Shane Henry picked up a pass from Henderson to see a snap shot saved by Souter. Moors were doing all the pressing as Andrew Stephenson cut inside from the right but his shot was deflected behind which he took himself and picked out Henry who saw his looping header saved under the bar by Souter. Henry went close again as he tried his luck from 22yds which took a slight deflection and it skimmed past the post. Scott Kerr then tried his luck with a volley after a corner was only half cleared but Souter held well after it bounced into his path. Moors pressure finally told as they broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute through a fantastic individual goal by Stephenson, who picked up the ball in his own half and advanced into the Albion half to race into the box and slide the ball past the keeper into the far corner. Moments later and Joe Tait went close to making it two when he kept the ball in play and cut inside but his blistering strike flew over the top. Albion didn’t trouble Dan Lowson in the first half but the pace of Connor Bower and the movement of Rob Boardman meant Moors defenders had to be right on their game. The second half was less than five minutes old when the Assistant Referee pulled up with an injury, and following a delay, Moors Secretary Steven Lawson ran the line. Moors went close soon after as Henderson - who worked tireless throughout - Spennymoor Town 3 – 0 Ossett Albion broke into the right hand side of the box and he rifled a shot which Souter manager to get a hand to and divert it onto the woodwork. Albion were slowly getting into the game and perhaps getting on top in possession. Moors then made changes with Lewis Dodds replacing Kerr and Danny Frost coming on for Fisher. These changes were to be pivotal as the game progressed. Another change was forced by Moors after Stephenson was on the receiving end of an unsavoury challenge by Dominic Riordan. Albion were then denied a golden opportunity when a ball through the middle was misjudged by Moors and this allowed the pacy Bower in with a one on one but Lowson managed to get a touch on the ball to send it past the post. It was a game changing save from the Moors keeper as he preserved his fourth clean sheet in succession. That miss proved costly to the visitors 1 Dan Lowson as Frost doubled the Moors lead 2 Kallum Griffiths after Henderson had a shot blocked 3 Chris Mason (c) inside the area he made no mistake 4 Scott Kerr (Sub Lewis Dodds) and two minutes later the fox in 5 Joe Tait the box rubbed salt into the Albion 6 James Risbrough wounds by scoring his second and 7 Andrew Stephenson Moors’ third of the night. James (Sub Stephen Capper) Risbrough had a shot saved by 8 Shane Henry Souter and when the loose ball 9 Liam Henderson broke, Frost was onto it in a flash to 10 Nathan Fisher (Sub Danny Frost) finish from an acute angle. Line-Up... Albion had the final chance deep into stoppage time when Danny South had a powerful header superbly pushed over the top by Lowson. 11 Anthony Peacock Subs Not Used: Jordan Robinson, Paul Johnson Attendance: 409 Referee: Mr C Dean www.spennymoortownfc.co.uk Northern Premier League Date 15-Aug 18-Aug 22-Aug 25-Aug 29-Aug 01 Sept 05-Sep 08-Sep 12-Sep 19-Sep 22-Sep 26-Sep 29-Sep 03-Oct 10-Oct 13-Oct 17-Oct 20-Oct 24-Oct 31-Oct 07-Nov 10-Nov 14-Nov 21-Nov 28-Nov 05-Dec 12-Dec 19-Dec 26-Dec 28-Dec 02-Jan 09-Jan 16-Jan 23-Jan 30-Jan 06-Feb 13-Feb 20-Feb 27-Feb 05-Mar 12-Mar 26-Mar 28-Mar 02-Apr 09-Apr 16-Apr 23-Apr TBA Opponents H/A Glossop North End A HARROGATE RA H RADCLIFFE BORO H Ossett Town A Harrogate RA A HARROGATE RA H CLITHEROE H OSSETT ALBION H BLYTH SPARTANS H Trafford A Lancaster City A BURSCOUGH H Kendal Town A Glossop North End A DROYLSDEN H BRIGHOUSE TOWN H Witton Albion A OSSETT TOWN H Radcliffe Boro A TBC TBC GLOSSOP NORTH END H BRIGHOUSE TOWN H Harrogate RA A Bamber Bridge A NEW MILLS H Warrington Town A NORTHWICH VICTORIA H LANCASTER CITY H Scarborough Athletic A FARSLEY CELTIC H Burscough A Prescot Cables A MOSSLEY H Clitheroe A TRAFFORD H Droylsden A KENDAL TOWN H Brighouse Town A WITTON ALBION H Mossley A PRESCOT CABLES H Ossett Albion A SCARBOROUGH ATHLETIC H New Mills A BAMBER BRIDGE H Northwich Victoria A WARRINGTON TOWN H Farsley Celtic A Comp NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 FACP FACPR NPL1 NPL1 FAC1Q NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 FATP NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 TBC NPL1 LC NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 NPL1 Result DRAW 1-1 DRAW 1-1 WON 1-0 WON 5-1 DRAW 0-0 WON 2-0 WON 5-0 WON 3-0 Att 471 375 391 159 172 388 487 409 1 Lowson Lowson Lowson Lowson Lowson Lowson Lowson Lowson 2 Griffiths Griffiths Griffiths Griffiths Griffiths Griffiths Griffiths Griffiths 3 Mason Mason Mason Mason Mason Mason Mason Mason 4 Dodds Dodds Dodds Dodds Dodds Kerr Kerr Kerr 5 Johnson Tait Tait Tait Tait Tait Tait Tait 1st Division North 2015/16 6 7 Capper Stephenson Johnson Briggs Capper Stephenson Capper STEPHENSON 1 Risbrough Stephenson Risbrough Stephenson Risbrough 1 Stephenson Risbrough STEPHENSON 1 8 Henry Henry Henry Henry Henry HENRY 1 HENRY 1 Henry 9 TAYLOR 1 Taylor TAYLOR 1 Taylor Henderson Henderson Henderson1 Henderson 10 Frost Cogdon Fisher FISHER 3 Fisher FISHER 1 FISHER 1 Fisher 11 Briggs Hoganson Peacock PEACOCK 1 Peacock Peacock Peacock1 Peacock SUB 1 Cogdon Fisher Henderson Henderson Cogdon Cogdon Robinson FROST 2 SUB 2 Henderson Risbrough Kerr Robinson Kerr Dodds Frost Dodds SUB 3 Risbrough HENDERSON 1 Risbrough Risbrough Keithley Keithley Keithley Capper SUB 4 Fisher Capper Johnson Johnson Johnson Johnson Johnson Johnson SUB 5 Robinson Robinson Robinson Cogdon Robinson Robinson Dodds Robinson C W MOTORS Buying and Selling Quality Used Motor Vehicles C W MOTORS Marmaduke Street Spennymoor • DL16 6DN Tel: 01388 811328 Mobile: 07836 653950 www.marmadukegarage.co.uk our sponsors... Clitheroe must walk under a few ladders on their way to the Brewery Field, last season they were beaten 8-3 and on Saturday were again beaten by 5 goals this time without reply. I thought that given the opportunity to play against a side without 11 men behind the ball that we’d come into our own, it proved to be the case with Spennymoor producing some quality final balls with the space provided. You couldn’t argue with the management naming an unchanged side on Tuesday night for the third straight game, I can’t quite remember the last time we’ve done that, there were some great individual performances from Risbrough, Henderson, Fisher, Peacock and Kerr. Tuesday night saw the visit of Ossett Albion, who made things more difficult for us than Clitheroe had done. Albion worked hard while Spennymoor struggled to get going in the first half after Fisher’s early excellently timed run from Henderson’s knock on nearly produced the dream start that has been our biggest ally so far this season. It’s was up to Stephenson to go it alone with limited options to break Ossett’s resolve and hand Spennymoor the advantage they’ve never let slip so far this campaign. Ossett Albion needed to get themselves back into the game and should’ve equalised if not for the great 1 on 1 stop by Lowson in the Spennymoor goal, who as I’ve said before is looking better than the keepers available last season. Two second half goals from Frost secured the points, despite only playing 6 games I’m confident that we can improve on last season’s fifth place finish. We are 3 points better off than the first 6 this time around with 7 more goals, we’ve been critical of our goal scoring ability now we’ve bagged 8 in the last 2 games at the Brewery Field, keep them coming! This afternoon see’s the visit of Blyth Spartans in the FA Cup, current pace setters in the NPL Premier Division. They will come into this game as favourites, obviously, you cannot underestimate the start they’ve had to the season though and they’ve played 5 of the other 6 teams in the top 7. Nonetheless I think today represents our toughest task of the season so far, it will be a barometer of where we are at. I’m not expecting a result, Blyth’s well documented FA Cup pedigree along with the fact they’re top of a higher division will put the onus on them to get the result, so I’m hoping we can go out there without the pressure on us. They won’t put 11 behind the ball so knowing what we can be capable of this match has the potential for goals, it certainly shapes up to be a mouth-watering encounter, there I said it, it’ll finish 0-0. The History of We take a brief look at the rich history of the oldest and best domestic Cup competition in the world. the FA Cup... At a meeting held in the offices of The Sportsman in London on 20th July 1871, a proposal by FA Honorary Secretary Charles Alcock “that it is desirable that a Challenge Cup should be established in connection with the Association, for which all clubs belonging to the Association should be invited to compete” met with favour and was finally approved three months later. The first FA Cup competition in season 1871-72 had fifteen entries. (This season more than 700 took part.) Wanderers, a team formed by ex-public school and university players, won the first final 1-0 against Royal Engineers at Kennington Oval. A crowd of 2,000 attended the match and they each paid one shilling for the privilege. The first Cup Final goal was scored by Morton Betts, playing under the assumed name of ‘A.H. Chequer’. He was an Old Harrovian who had once played for Harrow Chequers. The original trophy, much smaller than the present one, was made by Messrs Martin, Hall & Co. and cost £20. In 1895, after Aston Villa had won the competition, the cup was stolen from the window of a firm of football outfitters in Birmingham where it had been placed on display. It was never recovered. The present trophy, played for since 1992, is the competition’s fourth and an exact replica of the third. Manchester United have won the Cup the most times (11), followed by Arsenal (10) and Tottenham Hotspur (eight). Forty-two different clubs have won it. In January 1922 the Duke of York, later to become King George VI, cut the first turf to mark the beginning of the building of Wembley Stadium and it was completed in under a year at a cost of £750,000. The 1923 FA Cup Final between Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United (pictured) was the first football match at the new stadium and it drew an estimated crowd of 200,000, vastly exceeding the official capacity. It was only due to the good nature of the spectators and the efforts of the police, notably PC George Scorey on his white horse ‘Billie’, that the match took place at all. The Cup Final was played at Wembley in every year, excluding the war years, until 2000. The FA Cup has become established as one of the country’s great sporting institutions. It is now over 130 years old and yet, season by season, it generates tremendous interest not only in the country of its birth but all over the world. The history and tradition of the competition, and the pageantry of the Cup Final, is familiar to millions. The new Wembley hosted its first Final in 2007. Sir Bobby Robson, a Cup winner as Ipswich Town’s manager, once said. “The FA Cup Final is the greatest single match outside the World Cup Final - and it’s ours”. Mr Fred Stoker, who was the first club secretary, suggested the name “Spartans” – as he thought it appropriate to name the team after the Greek Spartan army, in the hope that the players gave their all as they went into “Battle” on the field of play. Fred eventually left the club for London, forming a practice as a distinguished physician in London’s Harley Street. He died in 1943, but his legacy lives on with the name Spartans unique in the annals of English non-league football. In the beginning, the club played only friendly matches, before joining the Northumberland League in 1901. The first recorded honour was a league success in 1901, followed by further victories in 1905/06 and 1906/07. The club then joined the Northern Alliance, remaining there for six seasons and winning the league in 1908/09 and 1912/13. In 1913, the club moved upward; joining the ranks of the semi-professionals in the North Eastern League and remained there until it folded in 1958. The fierce competition meant that honours were far and few between. However, the League was won in 1936/37 and the League Cup won in 1950 and again in 1955. After the demise of the North Eastern League, the club tried their luck in the Midland League and Northern Counties League, both ending when the leagues folded. The early 1960s saw the revival of the North Eastern League, with the club doing quite well. However, the league suffered many problems and eventually folded for good. The club was now at a loss for a suitable semiprofessional league and, in 1964, decided to turn amateur and join the ranks of the Northern League. During the 29 years the club were members, their record was second to none; winning the Championship on 10 occasions and finishing runners-up five times. However, a new regime at the club was keen to progress up the league pyramid and a successful push ended with promotion to the Unibond League in 1993/94. The club’s first ever season in the Unibond League was memorable; winning the First Division Championship and the Unifilla First Division League Cup. Since gaining promotion, the club held its own in the Premier Division – finishing sixth and seventh in its first two seasons. These seasons also saw Blyth knock Division Three side Bury out of the FA Cup and win the President’s Cup, defeating former Conference Premier side Runcorn in the final. It was just after the centenary season that the club encountered severe financial difficulties, being £148,000 in debt. Supporters and businesses alike rallied around to help save the club from extinction, by raising immediate funds to pay an initial £30,000 to stave off closure by HMRC. The remainder was raised as loans, to be paid back “as and when” to sympathetic businessmen and supporters. With the club’s future saved, a newly formed executive committee looked firstly to John Charlton – followed by Paul Baker – to bring success, but these were without the required success demanded by the fans. And so, the experienced Harry Dunn was appointed in October 2004, for a second time. Success was almost immediate. In 2005/06, Harry Dunn and his assistant Graham Fenton created another successful chapter in the Spartans’ history, by winning the UniBond Premier Division – as well as the Unibond League Chairman’s Cup and the Peter Swailes Memorial Shield – and with History... it, promotion to the Conference North. In their first season in the Conference North, Blyth hit the ground running and cemented themselves in the top half of the table. The season ended with Blyth narrowly missing out on a playoff position on the final day, finishing a creditable seventh. The following seasons were not as successful and – after two hard fought campaigns to preserve Conference North status – the end of the 2008/09 season saw Harry Dunn’s second spell at Croft Park come to an end. Former Hartlepool United, Darlington and Sheffield United Reserves Manager Mick Tait was soon appointed to take up the post, for his second spell in charge at Croft Park. Mick guided the club to two credible finishes in the Blue Square North (13th and ninth respectively.) The Club decided to replace Mick at the end of the 2010/11 season with a management duo of Steve Cuggy and his assistant Gavin Fell, both of whom had had successful seasons as part of the management team at Whitley Bay. Steve previously had two seasons at Blyth, before leaving to play professional football in 1991, with Maidstone. Cuggy scored a remarkable 42 goals for Blyth in his second season at the club, while Gavin previously played for Wimbledon’s “Crazy Gang.” After a run that saw the club rooted to the foot of the Conference North and a total of just two wins from 20 games, Cuggy agreed to leave the club and was replaced by former Newcastle and Burnley midfielder and ex-Workington and Whitby manager Tommy Cassidy. Despite an upturn in performances in the second part of the season, Cassidy’s efforts were in vain – as Blyth Spartans endured their first relegation in their 113-year history, leading to Fell’s departure as well. An indifferent start to Blyth’s return to the Northern Premier League – coupled with two cup defeats in three days – saw the club dispense of the Northern Irishman’s services in October 2012. Former Spartan Paddy Atkinson – Cassidy’s new assistant – was appointed caretaker manager and he brought former assistant manager Tom Wade back to the club, to help with the running of the club. Atkinson and Wade’s appointments were then made permanent the following month. However, this setup would only last six months, before Atkinson was forced to step down. Wade took on temporary charge of Spartans and was then announced as manager in April 2013, with ex-Swansea, Birmingham and Sunderland Welsh international John Cornforth acting as his assistant until the end of the season. In the following close season Wade recruited former Bishop Auckland boss Colin Myers as his assistant for the 2013/14 season. ...CONTINUED OVERLEAF BLYTH SPARTANS AFC Following a run of somewhat disappointing seasons the new management team are determined to bring some much success to Croft Park. The 2013/14 season saw the club begin the campaign with a whole host of new signings. A young, enthusiastic squad was put together, complimented with the experience of the likes of Robbie Dale and Neal Hooks. A bright start to the campaign saw the club amongst the title challengers come October and the side were playing some fantastic attacking football. Daniel Maguire There was recognition on an international level too. Seven of Spartans young players were called up to an England ‘C’ representative squad to face a Northern League side in a game organised to celebrate the league’s 125th anniversary. As the season continued and the schedule got busier the play offs were increasingly a long shot. The club finished just outside of the play-off spots but progress had been made. There was disappointment in the Cups too. Spartans failed to get past the first hurdle in the FA Cup and the Doodson Sports Cup due to defeats against AFC Fylde and Darlington respectively. A 6-0 FA Trophy hammering of Skelmersdale United in the First Qualifying Round gave promise, however that was quickly taken away as Ramsbottom United knocked Spartans out with a 1-0 win at Croft Park on a stormy November day. The Northumberland Senior Cup was the only cup competition that the club saw success in. Victories over Northern League sides Bedlington Terriers and Ashington saw Spartans head to St James Park in the final to face Newcastle United U21s. The Magpies ran out 4-0 winners, as Spartans felt the effects of three games in just four days. Adam McHugh Last season, Tom Wade’s men went about in setting history and were involved in one of the club’s best-ever seasons. This was mainly due to the success in the FA Cup, when they reached the third round to face Birmingham City. Going 2-0 up through two Robbie Dale goals, Blyth fell with City scoring three times to come out on top at Croft Park. Spartans had previously beaten Altrincham and Hartlepool United in the first and second rounds respectively. In the league, their form was brilliant despite the number of games the club played due to the cup run. A run of two defeats in the last 27 games led them to a sixth-place History CONTINUED... finish, just missing out on the play-offs. The club, did though, pick up the silverware in the Northumberland Senior Cup, when they beat Morpeth Town 2-0 at St. James’ Park. Croft Park The 2009/10 season marked Blyth Spartans centenary year at Croft Park. The ground was opened on the September 1, 1909 by Mrs Clarke, of the grandly named Bellister Castle, Haltwhistle. The first game against Newcastle United ended in a 4-2 reverse. To celebrate Croft Park’s centenary, Blyth once again faced a Newcastle United side and, again, the score finished 4-2 to the visitors. Not only did the game mark 100 years at Croft Park, but it also saw the opening of the new Croftway Stand, which means for the first time Croft Park is covered on all four sides. It also completes seven years of extensive developments which have completely changed the look of the ground. The old ash terracing and grass banks are now long gone and have been replaced by concrete terracing. A covered wheelchair enclosure has been added, beside the main stand and the main stand itself has had more seats added, to meet Conference North criteria. A new Sponsors’ Lounge and offices were also added. The new Sponsors’ Lounge also doubles up as a study support centre, which was built with funding from the ‘Playing For Success’ scheme. FA Cup The history of Blyth Spartans is not complete without reference to the team’s FA Cup exploits. Having beaten a number of league clubs over the years, the club reached the Fifth Round of the FA Cup in 1977/78. Beating Chesterfield and Stoke City along the way, the club drew 1-1 with Wrexham (and were then drawn against Arsenal in the Quarter final), before losing 2-1 in a replay at St James Park, watched by a crowd of 42,167! This was the first competitive game against a top flight side in the club’s history. This cup run also saw Blyth receive more TV coverage than ever before, with both Bournemouth games and the Blackburn game shown live on Setanta Sports, while the Shrewsbury game was shown as the main feature on ITV’s highlights programme. The money generated from the TV coverage and the FA Cup prize fund was enough to pay off all the clubs debts and help secure the future of the club. Overall, Blyth have reached the First Round 33 times, the Second Round 15 times, the Third Round four times and the Fourth and Fifth Round once. Player Progression The club has also supplied over 100 players to Football League Clubs and has also had seven players selected to play for the England semi-professional team. Dave Clarke, Peter Robinson, Les Mutrie, Paul Walker, Dave Buchanan and Keith Houghton all represented their country whilst with Blyth. The most recent selection was former goalkeeper Adam Bartlett, who made his England ‘C’ debut against Finland in May 2007. ...CONTINUED OVERLEAF BLYTH SPARTANS AFC Honours East Northumberland League Champions 1903-04, 1905-06, 1906-07 Northern Alliance League Champions 1908-09, 1912-13 North Eastern League Champions 1935-36 North Eastern League Cup Winners 1950-55 Northern League Champions 1972-73, 1974-75, 1975-76, 1979-80, 1980-81, 1981-82, 1982-83, 1983-84, 1986-87, 1987-88 Northern Cup Winners 1972-73, 1977-78, 1978-79, 1984-85, 1991-92 Northumberland Senior Cup Winners 1914, 1915, 1932, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1937, 1952, 1955, 1959, 1963, 1972, 1974, 1975, 1978, 1981, 1982, 1985, 1992, 1994 Cairns Cup Winners 1905-06, 1906-07 Tynemouth Infirmary Cup Winners 1908-09, 1909-10, 1932-33 Tyne Charity Shield Winners 1913-14 Tyne Charity Shield Joint Holders 1925-26 Northumberland Aged Miners Homes Cup Winners 1909-10, 1911-12, 1919-20, 1936-37, 1938-39 Northumberland Aged Miners Homes Cup Joint Holders 1920-21 Debenhams Cup Winners 1978 J.R. He returned to the UK and played for Blyth at the back end of last season but will continue at Boston from September. Adam McHugh: Goalkeeper McHugh has signed this summer from Spennymoor Town and comes into the squad as before Thomson departs for Boston once again in September. McHugh has previously had time at St. Mirren, Forfar Athletic, Hartlepool United and Forest Green Rovers. Danny Parker: Defender Paker was a key player for Blyth in 2013/14 but after suffering a broken jaw at the start of last season, was out of action until Christmas time. He made his impact, as expected, once again after that. He made a two division step up, from the Northern League, and after the impressive season in 2013/14, was given an England ‘C’ representative call up. Alex Nicholson: Defender Nicholson, a Wales U19 right back, signed for Spartans following his release from Preston North End at the end of the 2013/14. The full-back, from Cramlington, started his career with Newcastle United before moving to North End - spending time on loan with Chorley last season. He impressed towards the back end of last season as an exciting forward-thinking right-back. Jordan Watson: Defender Watson joined Spartans last September after his release from Premier League side Sunderland. After making an impressive start to life at Croft Park, he went from strength to strength in the Evo-Stik Premier League. He’s able to play at left-back and centre-back he has a number of Northern Ireland U19 appearances to his name. Chris Bell: Defender In his second spell with the club Chris can play in a number of positions. He rejoined the club in the summer of 2014 from Northern League side Consett and has also had spells with Whitley Bay and Bishop Auckland. He combines his role as a player with the job of physio at the club. Ryan Hutchinson: Defender A former youth player at Glasgow Celtic and St Johnstone, Ryan joined Spartans from Northern Alliance side Seaton Delaval at the back end of the 2013/14 season. He made a couple of appearances and was resigned for the following season. He has gone on to make a big impact playing in both defence and midfield, however is now firmly seen as the club’s main centre-half. Stuart Bramley: Defender Centre-half Bramley is another who has had time playing in the USA (for Dallas). He signed towards the back end of last season as Blyth suffered a number of defensive injuries but with some impressive performances, will be hard to push out the side this term. Dillon Morse: Defender Defender Morse has joined Spartans this summer after a successful trial period with the club. Morse, who had spells with Carlisle United and Gateshead earlier in his career, played in a number of pre-season friendlies, impressing the staff with both his footballing abilities and attitude. Stephen Turnbull: Midfielder Nicknamed “Twinny”, midfielder Turnbull is currently in his third spell with Spartans. A massively popular player with the Green Army, he has played in Australia with Bayswater City and began his career at Hartlepool United. Was Spartans’ key midfield player last season and controlled matches from his position at the base of Blyth’s midfield. SQUAD... Robbie Dale: Midfielder Winger Dale is a Spartans legend and claimed the Unibond Premier Divison Golden Boot, Spartans Fans’ Player of the Season and Supporters’ Club player of the Season in 2006. Always looking to cut inside from the wing, or capable of playing as a forward, “Bingo” recorded the most goals and assists for Blyth last season. Robbie lists Ryton, West Allotment Celtic and Whitley Bay as former clubs. Last season, Robbie combined scoring goals against Championship Birmingham City with winning the Evo-Stik Player of the Year and Fans’ Player of the Year. Neal Hooks: Midfielder The 2011 Players’ Player of the Year re-signed for Spartans, after a 12-month stint at Spennymoor Town at the start of last season. “Hooksy”, 26, has played for Ross County, Newcastle Blue Star, Ilkeston Town and Sunshine George Cross in addition to Spennymoor. Damen Mullen: Midfielder Mullen is another in his second spell for the club and is a hugely versatile player, able to play both flanks, full-back positions and in the centre of midfield. Damen is easily recognisable on the pitch, with his current haircut being self-dubbed the “brutal Damo” and has formerly turned out for: Hartlepool United, Morpeth Town, Newcastle Benfield and Ashington. Matthew Wade: Midfielder Central midfielder Matthew, son of current Spartans boss Tom Wade, signed to play at Croft Park last summer. Wade, 22, joined from Washington FC and dictates the pace of games from the centre of the park. He emerged, towards the end of last season, as a holding midfielder who wins headers and makes important challenges in front of the defence. Michael Richardson: Midfielder Ex-Newcastle United midfielder Richardson is a forward-thinking player who is always looking to create attacks. He was a key man in Spartans’ brilliant season last term, and scored in the 2-0 Northumberland Senior Cup final over Morpeth Town. Arran Wearmouth: Midfielder Wearmouth is a powerful winger that stands at 6ft 3’. “Azza” cancelled his holiday to Ibiza to sign for Spartans in time for competitive action at the start of last season, after turning down the advances of other clubs. Wearmouth has previously played for Riverside, Lumley, Middlesbrough and Bishop Auckland. Sean Reid: Midfielder/Forward Reid, who can play either up-top of behind in the midfield, has recently signed from West Allotment Celtic. Manager Tom Wade admitted he’d been watching Reid last season and was keen for the midfielder to make the step up to the Evo-Stik League this season. Paul Robinson: Midfielder Robinson has re-joined Blyth after he left for Whitley Bay last season. Injury troubles had limited him to just a number of starts at Blyth but Tom Wade has expressed his faith in Robinson, saying “when fit, Paul is as good as anyone in this division”. Ash Davis: Forward Davis is another who re-joined Blyth, towards the end of last season. He was limited to just substitute appearances behind Dan Maguire, but with the latter leaving for Halifax, it could leave Ash with a great chance to make the striker’s position his own. He has five goals for Spartans over his 24 appearances for the club. Dan Maguire: Forward ‘Nipa’ was Spartans’ top scorer last season and has been a pivotal part of Blyth’s game for the last two campaigns. His tireless work rate in attack is second-to-none and he often finds himself in the right positions in front of goal ready to snatch chances. Maguire scored two in the first round of the FA Cup last season against Conference Altrincham and is a firm fans’ favourite around Croft Park. Latest News... Brewery Field Works Spennymoor Town are currently upgrading the electrical system in the Club Shop and adding new lighting to the main stand. The upgrade to the club shop system will allow the catering team to provide additional products to supporters on match days. The works to install a new ring main within the cabin canteen has started with the job to be completed by Friday in time for us to service supporters accordingly for the game Saturday and future home fixtures. We are also installing a new 32 amp ring main circuit to feed the cooking equipment which has been installed within the cabin over the pre-season because at present the cabin has only 1 x 32 amp ring main circuit and with the equipment currently being used both on the shop side and the canteen it was causing the circuit to overload and the staff have been unable to utilise all the equipment. The improvements mean that by having 2 ring main circuits 1 supplying the shop side and the second supplying the catering equipment this will reduce the electrical load and help the staff in serving the supporters in a timely manner. Work to install lighting in to the main stand area will also be undertaken to improve safety for supporters. We are going to install 8 1x58W light fittings within the canopy off the main stand. This will also incorporate emergency lighting and it will which will be positioned above each stairwell to provide illumination under any power outage, for the safe exit of the public. We are also installing a new mains board in the main stand to help with the existing load and new lighting improvements. diary of a groundhopper... 1) 1971/72 Blyth Spartans v Reading (2-2) (F.A.CUP 3rd Round) This was a 3rd round tie between Northern League Blyth Spartans and 4TH Division Reading in January 1972. Blyth had beaten Boldon C.A. 3-1 at home then Willington also 3-1 at home before thrashing Consett 8-1 again at home. In the 4th qualifying Round they drew away 1-1 at Whitley Bay before winning the replay 2-1. The 1st Round saw them beat 4th Division Crewe Alexandra 1-0 away and the next round they again beat League opposition in Stockport County again by 1-0. This 3rd Round tie saw Blyth draw 2-2 before losing the replay by 6-1. Reading lost in the next Round at home by 2-1 against Arsenal. Programme is a nice glossy 12 page effort. 2) 1977/78 Blyth Spartans v Chesterfield (1-0) (F.A.Cup 2nd Round) Blyth were playing their 6th game in the F.A.Cup as they hosted 3rd Division Chesterfield and up to this point had only lost twice that season in games against Spennymoor United and Whitby Town in the League. This match they saw off the Derbyshire side by 1-0 (Stephen Jones) to go into the 3rd Round. Chesterfield ended the season in 9th spot whilst Blyth were runners up to Spennymoor United. Programme looks like an ordinary Blyth programme at the time and only consisted of 12 pages but still a very collectable programme as part of the famous cup run. 3) 1977/78 Stoke City v Blyth Spartans (2-3) (F.A.Cup 4th Round) It looked a bridge too far for the Spartans as they played away at Second Division Stoke City in the 4th Round of the Cup. Blyth had beaten Enfield 1-0 at home with a goal from Alan Shoulder in the previous round and were in the 4th Round for the first time. If I remember this match was postponed a few times before it got underway but the Spartans stunned Stoke by winning 3-2 with goals from Steve Carney and 2 goals from Terry Johnson for one if not their greatest win in the F.A.Cup. Stoke finished the season 7th in Division 2 that season. Programme is a 14 page glossy programme and another nice programme for my collection. 4) 1977/78 Wrexham v Blyth Spartans (1-1) (F.A.Cup 5th Round) So it was to Wales and Wrexham in the next Round of the Cup for the mighty Spartans and the game now is in history about the corner which wasn’t which I will explain in a minute. First of all Blyth had won through against Stoke before finding out the draw was between Wrexham and Newcastle United which had finished in a 2-2 draw at St James Park. It would have been the dream draw for Spartans away at Newcastle United if the Mags could win the replay but no Wrexham spoiled the party by winning 4-1 in the replay. Blyth stunned the Red Dragons by taken the lead in the 1st Half and it was into Injury time before Wrexham scored with a highly disputed goal from Dixie McNeil. Wrexham had won a corner and Blyth had cleared the ball twice but in the meantime the corner flag kept falling over so the ref in the meantime told Wrexham to play it again before in the 3rd corner they scored even though the corner flag again fell over. Programme is again a glossy but ordinary programme from Wrexham with 14 pages. 5) 1977/78 Blyth Spartans v Wrexham (1-2) (F.A.Cup 5th Round Replay) Sadly it was just a bridge too far for Spartans in this replay played at St James Park, Newcastle with 42,000 inside and many more locked out on the outside. Everyone was wanting to see this famous Non League side win through to play Arsenal in the next round. It was not to be however as Wrexham scored 2 early goals before Spartans pulled a goal back but it was not enough and it was the Welsh side who went on to play Arsenal and they lost 3-2 at home in the next Round. At the end of the season Wrexham won the old 3RD Division. Programme is a special Glossy production with 20 Pages but it is quite an easy programme to get hold of it went for 20 pence at the time. 6) 1978/79 Blyth Spartans v York City (3-5) (F.A.Cup 1st Round replay) Blyth had a fine 1-1 draw against 4th Division York City on the Saturday but in a thrilling match the Spartans could`nt replicate the season before and lost out to the Minstermen by 5-3. York then despatched Non League Scarborough by 3-0 at home in the 2nd Round before beating Luton Town by 2-0 in the Third Round again at Bootham Crescent before losing to Nottingham Forest away by 3-1. York eventually finished the season in 10th spot. Blyth ended their season in 5th in the Northern League. Programme just a 10 pager and looks like a normal League issue. Blyth Spartans programmes in the F.A.Cup (1971 – 2015) Thanks to Harry Watson for this interesting article on some of his Blyth Spartans Programmes 7)1981/82 Blyth Spartans v Walsall (1-2) (F.A.Cup 1st Round) Third Division Walsall were the visitors to Blyth for this match but sadly for the Spartans it ended in defeat by 2-1 but at the end of the season Blyth won the Northern League. Walsall lost in the next Round of the Cup by 2-1 away to Peterborough United. At the end of the season Walsall just escaped by relegated to the 4th Division on goal difference finishing 20th. Programme is a 22 page ordinary issue but as you can see I have the programme autographed by 12 of the Spartans side. 8) 1997/98 Blackpool v Blyth Spartans (4-3) (F.A.Cup 1st Round) Another thriller this time away to Blackpool who were mid table in the 2nd Division at the time. Blyth stunned Blackpool and were leading 2-1 at the break but the League side fought back and in the end beat Unibond Premier League Spartans by 4-3. Blackpool lost 2-1 away at Oldham Athletic in the next Round. Blyth ended the season in 7th in the Unibond Premier League whilst Blackpool finished in 12th. Programme is a nice glossy 38 pager for £1.70. 9) 2008/09 AFC Bournemouth v Blyth Spartans (0-0) (F.A.Cup 2nd Round) Division Two side Bournemouth was the destination for Blyth Spartans after despatching Shrewsbury Town also of Division 2 in the 1st Round by 3-1 at home in front of just under 2500 supporters. Blyth put up a sterling display and Keeper Marc Bell was outstanding and the game finished 0-0 in front of 4165 supporters with over 400 from Blyth. The replay saw Blyth win with an 89th minute goal from Ged Dalton to send the Blyth supporters into ecstasy with a home game against Premier League Blackburn Rovers. Programme is a glossy 40 Pager for £2. 10) 2008/09 Blyth Spartans v Blackburn Rovers (0-1) (F.A.Cup 3rd Round) Next up for Blyth in this run was Premier League Blackburn Rovers and with the TV cameras hoping for a shock also at the game. On a freezing January night Blackburn won through by 1-0 but the Spartans nearly scored at the end but it was not to be. Blackburn sadly on the night played with mainly reserve players but that is the way the Premier sides play now with the Premier League being the be all and end all and where the money is. Blyth ended the season in 15th position in the Conference North. Blackburn beat Sunderland in the next Round of the Cup before losing to Coventry City after a replay. Blackburn finished the season in 15th in the Premier League. Programme was a special 40 pages for £2. 11) 2011/12 Blyth Spartans v Gateshead (0-2) F.A.Cup 1st Round) This was a big local derby and all ticket for this match with Conference North Blyth Spartans playing Conference Gateshead. Blyth at the time were struggling in the Conference North whilst Gateshead were high up in the Conference table but on the day Blyth never really turned up and Gateshead had an easy 2-0 win. Gateshead lost at home to Conference side Tamworth in the next Round. Gateshead finished the season in 8th in the Conference whilst the Spartans ended the season in 21st and relegation. Programme is a 36 page issue costing £2 and quite hard to get hold of. 12) 2014/15 Blyth Spartans v Birmingham City (2-3) (F.A.Cup 3rd Round) Another big game for the famous cup fighters as they played host to Championship side Birmingham City who at one stage were having a disastrous season but Manager Gary Rowett had steadied the side and they were moving up the table. Blyth had seen off Nationwide Conferernce side Altrincham by 4-1 at home in the 1st Round before another Giant Killing act in beating Division 2 side Hartlepool United 2-1 at their Victoria Ground in front of the TV cameras. Blyth were in the Evo Stik Premier League at the time and they stunned Birmingham City by leading 2-0 at half time. The second half was a different story with Gary Rowett giving his side a kick up the back side as they came back to beat the Spartans by 3-2.
