GREYHOUND PETS OF AMERICA - NASHVILLE | SUMMER 2012
Older dogs hold a special place in her heart
Marjory Waddill first learned about racing greyhounds
while she was working for the CEO of Arkansas Children’s
Hospital. “My boss’s wife raised racing dogs and he
would sometimes bring them in the office,” recalls the
Clarksville resident. “That’s when I knew I had to have
one.”
A life-long animal lover, Marjory says she’s had pets
since she was six years old, so welcoming her first hound
— a returned senior named Shadow — in 2006 was a natural part of her passion for animals. Shadow and Marjory
had three years together before he died. By then, Marjory
knew a senior hound would always be a part of her life,
so when she was ready, Poncho, another returned senior,
came to live with her.
“Greyhounds are the most relaxing, loving creatures,”
says Marjory, 86. “And there’s nothing better than a
senior hound. They’re sweet and they’re already adjusted
to being a pet. People worry that a senior hound won’t
be with them long, and that’s possible. It’s also possible
they could live four-five years and a two-year-old dog
could die tomorrow.”
Hounds at Home
Like all greyhound owners, Marjory has found no two
hounds are alike. “Shadow walked in and the first thing
he did was get on the couch, but you just can’t persuade
Poncho to do that,” she says. “When I’m reading the
paper, Poncho comes up and pushes it out of the way.
He wants to be scratched and then he almost purrs. I love
that about him.”
Marjory’s 87th birthday is in November and she’s looking forward to continuing to share her life with hounds.
“I tell people I want to make it to 100, and I want to have
greyhounds all the way there.”
Marjory Waddill & her greyhound best friend, Poncho.
Check out Senior Incentives

Celebrate the 2012 election season at GPAN’s fall picnic. It’s 1-4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 23 in the large events
pavilion of Centennial Park. Our theme is “Greyhound
for President” and the day will include the election of a
greyhound president and vice president plus a Hound
& Human Patriot Costume Contest.
Our goal is to raise $5,000 which
will help pay for surgery for trackinjured dogs. The picnic is free and
open to greyhound adopters and people
interested in greyhound adoption.
Food and fun
For lunch, Todd and Jessica Hogue
(Zoom) will grill burgers on site, courtesy
of Jessica’s employer, Jim ‘n’ Nick’s Barbecue.
The burgers, along with all the fixings and two
sides, are just $6.50 each. You can pay in advance via the Paypal button on the bottom left of our
website or buy them at the sign-in table. To supplement lunch, please bring a side item or dessert to share
or a case of water or soda.
The silent and bag auctions start promptly at 1 p.m.,
so come ready to bid high and bid often. Items range
from dog beds and jewelry to gift certificates, feeding
stations, gift baskets and framed art. We’ll also be selling tickets for our famous bag auctions as well as for a
giant, handcrafted felted-wool dog bed. (See Pg. 2 for
a sample of the auction items.)
At the GPAN booth we’ll be selling beautiful tag and
Martingale collars, leashes as well as coats for hounds
and tiny, hand-knitted greyhounds. All proceeds from
this booth support GPAN.
The Dunking for Dogs contest is back and hounds
will be competing in a timed competition to see how
many hot dog slices they can snatch from bowls of
water. And, there’ll be prizes.
Please stop by the Foster Dog Grab Bag table. Lynnae Van Doren and Wayne Ingstrup will be selling grab
bags valued at at least $15. Each bag honors an adoptable dog. While you’re there, check out the available
hounds near the Grab Bag area. As always, nail trims
will be available for $5 per dog.

This is a sighthound only event. Please do not bring
other breed dogs.

Helping hands needed
Being a volunteer at the picnic is a great way to meet other
adopters and to have a good time. Typically, we get 250
people and 200+ hounds attending, so we need all the help
we can get.
Volunteers typically work a 30-45 minute shift, leaving
plenty of time to enjoy the day. Ready to pitch in? Here’s who
to contact:

n Auctions: Sonja Rine – [email protected]

President’s Column
A word on sponsors
Our Sept. 23 picnic is shaping up nicely. There’ll
be great stuff in the auctions, good food and good
shopping. Of course, there’ll be lots of people and
hounds. You will be joining us, won’t you?
This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and
everything we raise goes to the Angel Fund. That’s
where we set aside money to care for track-injured
dogs like Marmaduke and Undercover.
The picnic is always busy, so I want to say thanks
here to our sponsors and donors whose financial
and in-kind support powers greyhound adoption. As
you look at this list, remember — when you support
our sponsors, you support people who support
greyhound adoption. As of Aug. 15, they include:
n Blue Paw
n Books a Million
n Dennis Paper
n Designs by Sylvia
n Dizzy’s Dog Wash
n Factory at Franklin
n Frankln Kennels
n GiGi’s Cupcakes
n Grassmere Animal Hospital
n Jim ‘n’ Nick’s Barbecue
n Nashville Pet Products
n Mailer’s Choice
n Mars Pet Food
n Mid-South Greyhound Adoption Option
n Mobley Veterinary Clinic
n Nashville Originals
n Noshville Deli
n Pet Med Veterinary Hospital
n PetSmart
n Petco
n Red Dog Wine & Spirits
n Stage Road Animal Hospital
n Starbucks
n Taco Mamacita
n Total Pet Care Hospital
n Trader Joe’s
n Vet-Med Veterinary Hospital
n Williamson County Animal Hospital
The problem with a list is that inevitably, someone
gets left out. If that’s happened we’ll set it straight
at the picnic where we’ll have a board up listing
everyone whose donations make our work possible.
Look forward to seeing you on Sunday, Sept. 23
at the large events pavilion in Centennial Park. You’ll
find me in the foster dog area, so drop by to say
hello.

appears on the website and on adoptables boards with the description of the
hound you’ve decided to sponsor as well as in the newsletter. A profile of each
sponsor is posted on the GPAN Yahoo board. For more on 401(Grey), email

Potential buyers
are already talking
about this cool hat.
Black-hound lovers,
come ready to battle
it out for this original work of art.
This vintage racing silk and muzzle are perfect for framing.
Since September 2011, 401Grey Foster Dog Sponsorship has raised nearly
$5,000 for GPAN. These dollars help cover the rising cost of vetting, feeding and
caring for recently retired greyhounds who are awaiting adoption. GPAN is a
501(c)3 organization so donations are tax deductible.
Used jewelry to help hounds
This hand-knitted, 100% wool fawn
cutie is waiting for a forever home.
Don’t disappoint him.
Look for this adorable clay art pin at
the sack auction
table. You’ll wear it
with Greyt Pride.
Who doesn’t have out-of-style costume jewelry? Ditto watches that are dated
or don’t run. Donate these items to GPAN and you’ll help the hounds when
they’re resold at our upcoming Bling Blast. Proceeds will support adoptable
hounds.
Bring jewelry donations to our Sunday, Sept. 23 picnic in Centennial Park and
leave them with Lynnae Van Doren at the Foster Dog Bag table. Donations also
will be accepted at selected upcoming Meet & Greets so watch the website and
Yahoo list for days/locations. They can be mailed to: GPAN, PO Box 1042, Goodlettsville, TN 37070. Need a receipt? Label your donations with your name and
address and state a value. Receipts will be mailed.
The sale will be in late October or early November. Watch the Yahoo List/website for details. Lynnae’s looking for volunteers to help put on this fundraiser. To
volunteer to give a hand, email her at [email protected].
