History
The Man that Built the Foundations of Yonezawa
Uesugi Kagekatsu
Naoe Kanetsugu
Uesugi Kagekatsu was the adopted son of Uesugi Kenshin. In
1598, he was given the domain of Aizu, which was worth 1.2
million koku (bushels of rice). After his defeat in the Battle of
Sekigahara (1600), his domain was reduced to 300,000 koku
and was forced to relocate to Yonezawa in 1601. Until his
death at age 69 in Yonezawa Castle, Kagekatsu saw the world
change from war to peace and stability under the Tokugawa
Shogunate.
Kanetsugu’s childhood name was Yoroku. He was
recognized as being wise from an early age and was chosen
to serve under Uesugi Kagekatsu. He married a woman
named Osen, and served as a senior retainer to the Uesugi
Clan. Kanetsugu sent Tokugawa Ieyasu the famous "Naoe
Letter" which provoked the Battle of Sekigahara, a battle
that saw Japan divided between the Toyotomi and the
Tokugawa Clans.
Even after the Uesugi Domain was reduced and relocated to
Yonezawa after the Battle of Sekigahara (1600), Kanetsugu
devoted himself to his lord and the people
of the domain, laying down the
foundations of modern Yonezawa
until his death at age 60.

The Man that Restored the
Yonezawa Domain to Prosperity
The Genius of the Warring States Period
To achieve, one must act.
To not act is to not achieve anything.
This is true in all things.
The inability to achieve is the result of
inaction on the part of the individual.
Uesugi Yōzan
Maeda Keiji
Uesugi Yōzan was the 9th lord of the Yonezawa Domain.
Yōzan became ruler of Yonezawa at age 17, and was
successful in restoring the economic health of the domain.
He retired at age 35, and died at age 72.
The various foundations that Yōzan established based
on frugality and simplicity continue to shape modern
Yonezawa. It is said that former US President Kennedy
once said that "Yōzan is a brilliant politician".

Maeda Keiji excelled at literature and waka poetry, and
exchanged renga (linked poetry) with some of the finest
poets of the day. He was also skilled in horseback riding
and the martial arts, and was noted for his heroism in many
battles.
It is believed that Keiji came to serve the Uesugi Clan as
a result of his friendship with Naoe Kanetsugu, and his
admiration for Uesugi Kagekatsu’s personality and emphasis
on loyalty.

Said to be the place where Uesugi
Kenshin and Takeda Shingen met in
personal combat. Uesugi struck at
Takeda three times, which Takeda
parried with the military fan he used

examined the fan and saw it had been

the name, “Three Swords, Seven
Swords”.

Ssasano-Itto-bori (Sasano Single-Blade Wood Carving) is
a local craft made in the Sasano area of Yonezawa. These
carvings are called “single-blade” wood carvings since they
are made from a single knife, called a sarukiri. Wood from
the koshiabura tree are used, and the most famous type of
carving is the " Otaka-Poppo " (hawk).
