The technology used in nowadays fruit- and
vegetable processing machinery is based on
classic mechanics. Motion and action inside
the machine is achieved by springs, friction
drive belts, and other moving components.
All causing wear and requiring frequent
maintenance.
Dofra has applied a technology using permanent super magnetism, eliminating the use
of wires, tubes, belts and springs resulting
in a machine running with frictionless
components, tremendously reducing the costs
of maintenance.
Product description
The Magnetic Driven Onion Peeler operates as
follows:
- The onions are fed into the hopper and
are transported up via adjustable fingers.
A wiper system assures that onions are
singulated before they are positioned in
cups which move into the peeling section.
- An operator has to position the onion
horizontally in the cup, after which the
onion is topped and tailed via the topand tail knives that dynamically follow the
shape of the onion. As the onion moves
through the peeling section it is kept in
the cup via an adjustable pressure system.
- An incision cutting mechanism makes a
horizontal incision at the back and at the
front of the onion to ease the removal of
the outer skin of the onion. The depth of
the cutting can be set to cut one or more
layers depending on the required quality.
After the horizontal incisions have been
made the Magnetic Driven peeling wheel
takes the onion off the cup and rotates the
onion, completely frictionless, in a double
horizontal Magnetic Driven onion holder.
All rotating, clamping and opening actions
of the Magnetic Driven peeling wheel
occur completely frictionless, based
on magnetism, without springs, belts or
other components.
While rotating the onion around its own axes,
another incision is made around the entire
circumference of the onion. The incision depth
can be regulated so that either one or more
layers can be cut.
- Machine components are placed with more
space between them, in a more open construction, greatly improving the hygiene of
the machine and the ease and effectiveness
of cleaning.
A directed jet of air, limiting the air consumption, blows the cut skins from the onions.
The waste is transported to a waste hopper
via a funnel. The out-feed of the peeler has
an adjustable centrifugal fan, which keeps
the loose skins in the machine and separates
them from the peeled onions.
Innovation
The uniqueness of this product lays in the
application of a technology that is completely
new. Because of the application of this new
technology machines can be build and maintained easier with less components, are more
hygienic because of less components that
are easier accessible, are more sustainable
since permanent super magnets do not wear
and run without friction and the technology
is used to replace components that do wear
(springs, belts, moving components).
Characteristics in short
Economic impact
The Magnetic Driven onion peeler has a significant positive impact on the following cost
factors that determine the economic return of
an onion peeler in his process:
- The yield of the onion peeling process is
higher (up to 90% reduction of onions lost
during peeling due to centrifugal forces in
the conventional peeling process).
- The human labor costs for daily cleaning and
periodical maintenance are less since the
Magnetic Driven peeling wheel consists of far
less components and is thus much easier to
clean and requires far less time to maintain.
- The onions to be peeled can have a far
wider range in diameter without having
to adjust the machine’s setting due to the
better processing control of the Magnetic
Driven peeling wheel. Less time for machine
setting, less time for onion grading results
in a higher economical return.
- Components moving with friction (belts,
springs, arms etc.) are replaced by frictionless operating super magnets which highly
increase the reliability of the machine and
give a longer “up time”.
John de Groot, CEO of Dofra Foodtec
“We realized that if we wanted to offer our clients a good solution to the inconveniences of today’s
machines, we had to look at machine engineering from a complete different perspective. Avoid springs
that can break, avoid metal arms that can tear, avoid belts that can stretch, avoid friction that causes
wear, reduce the number of components to increase hygiene and make maintenance easier.
Quite a challenge. But we have realized huge improvement on all these issues via the application of a
technology using super magnetism. It took us three years of dedicated research and development which
was subsidized by the European union. The results are impressive.”
Technology
Dofra has developed and applied a technique
using permanent super magnets. Using this
technology Dofra is able to position, rotate,
clamp and release onions in a machine
environment, based on the physical position
of the onion in the machine. Frictionless!!
The machine is equipped with various kinds
of super magnets which were researched
by Dofra for a period of three years under
subsidy of the European community.
The related technology of applied super
magnetism in food processing machinery is
patented worldwide by Dofra.
Quality
In the same workspace as before, productivity
is increased by 50% as the capacity of the
machine increased by 50% due to the applied
super magnets.
The super magnets that are applied in the
onion holders have been constructed in such
manner that big onions do not get crushed
and smaller onions do not get lost, without
leaving deep (holding) marks in the onion.
The onion that leaves the Magnetic Driven
onion peeler has an identical quality as a
hand peeled onion.
For quality aspects on maintenance and
hygiene see Productivity.
Productivity
The Magnetic Driven peeling wheel works
with 6 onion holders compared to 4 onion
holders in conventional onion peelers,
increasing the peeling capacity with 50%.
The Magnetic Driven peeling wheel moves
with more onion holders at a lower rotational
speed. This results in a better control of the
onion peeling process with up to a stunning
90% reduction of onions that are lost during
the peeling due to centrifugal forces in the
conventional peeling process.
The conventional peeling wheel in an onion
peeler consists of some 600 parts. The Magnetic
Driven peeling wheel consists of around
150 components. This greatly reduces the
complexity of maintenance and thus the
costs of maintenance.
As the construction of the Magnetic Onion
peeling wheel is an open construction with
rounded components and without the
conventional springs and belts it is far more
hygienic and easier and faster to clean.

Sustainability
All components that move and have friction,
such as friction belts, springs, arms moving on
a curve disk, have wear and require periodical
replacement, using up the earth’s resources.
The permanent super magnets used by Dofra
have a permanent magnetic field, with no loss
of strength, no wear. The clamps are driven
by magnets, opening and closing the clamps
completely frictionless, thus no wear. The rotation of the onion in the onion clamp holder
is done by magnets, without physical contact,
thus completely frictionless with no wear.
If ever a technology excels in sustainability,
it is the super magnetism technology patented
worldwide by Dofra.
