On March 12 Deb Thompson and Donna Houston boarded the plane for a return trip Guatemala City! The purpose of the trip was to meet with the people of Iglesia El Shaddai (El Shaddai Church) in the village of Chiac, Rabinal, Baja Verapaz, Guatemala. The voyage there was made lighter by reading jokes, messages, and prayers written by members of FPC. Thank you! In-country coordinator, Pablo Perez, met them at the airport. After a night’s stay at a local Hostel, the group headed for the village of Salama, approximately 3-4 hours (depending on the traffic) from Guatemala City. In Salama they were greeted by Living Waters In-Country Director, Omar Marroquin. The next leg of the journey was an hour trip up, down, and around the mountain to the Mayan village of Chiac. Continued on page 2 www.facebook.com/franklinpresbyterian Pablo (in-country coordinator) & Deb T. Where the clean water system will be installed. FPC Living Waters Team (continued)... After a hike down a rocky path, across a craggy creek and up another hill, they were greeted by Pastor Domingo, his wife Lucie, and members from El Shaddai Church in Chiac. The group then headed back down the hill, back across the creek, up the other hill, and down the road to another path which led to the water building. That’s when the excitement began. This little church has built their own wonderful water building (exactly to specifications) and dug their own well in anticipation of being able to have a Living Waters system so that they can share clean, purified water with their village of about five hundred families. Hard work, resourcefulness, and determination are the key here. The people of this church are truly amazing. impressive youth who were included in the process. After the two days we were able to sign a covenant with Iglesia El Shaddai in Chiac. This means that all parties have agreed that the site is sustainable, both parties have agreed to certain steps to make the site ready, and that FPC has a new partner in Guatemala! This covenant provides a bond with Iglesia El Shaddai – not just for the installation of the Living Waters System, but a bond that will last into the future. We are committed to help them until they are self-sustaining, the ultimate goal of all Living Waters partnerships. The last day was spent in Guatemala City. Deb and Donna were fortunate to get to visit the Synod Offices there, where Pablo’s office and the warehouse for Living Waters are located. The By the way, the water building is centrally located in warehouse holds extra parts, filters, etc. which partners in Guatemala can purchase them as the village, directly behind the health clinic. The needed. church plans to give water to the clinic and to the local school as part of their mission. Plans are being made for a return trip, probably The next days were spent meeting in detail with the in the fall of this year.
