PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
My kcwc mind never stops working, for example, when I was travelling
to Spain this summer on the car ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao, I
asked someone how many passengers were on-board. When I learnt that
it held over 800 I began to organise a trip for our entire membership in
my head! I needn’t have worried as our Travel Group was already on
the job, planning a wonderful excursion to the Basque country in Spain
and France.
This is one of the many activities and events being organised for the 2015–16 kcwc year.
Quick action is needed ladies, as lots of trips are fully booked as soon as they hit the kcwc
website, which was the purpose of moving on to this electronic wonder – to make it easier to
join the fun! If you’re not sure yet how to sign up to our activities online, we will be
conducting several training sessions this year starting at the October GM. They are intended to
help overcome computer shyness and to demonstrate how easy and efficient it can be to pay
for activities or to renew your membership online with a touch of the right keys.
General Meetings require no sign-up, so do come and hear our speaker for October, Francelle
Bradford White, who wrote an inspiring book about her mother’s achievements during the
war. Andree Griotteray was a remarkably brave young girl who outwitted the Nazis in
occupied France. After she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease Francelle began to research
and write about her mother’s life during the war and her remarkable achievements afterwards.
Francelle also set up a charity in honour of her mother, The Andree Griotteray White
Charitable Trust, which funds research into any form of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia and
supports those suffering from it, something many of us unfortunately are having to deal with
in our lives.
November’s GM features another inspiring woman, Felicity Aston, who led eight women from
around the Commonwealth on an expedition to the South Pole. Some of them had never
seen snow let alone knew how to ski! I hope you will join us on Thursday 5 November in a
splendid new venue, the Law Society at Chancery Lane, to hear a wonderful true story about
what women around the world have achieved in their lives.
On a sad note, I am sorry to tell you about the passing of a wonderful member of the club,
our Activity Leader Gail Reichert. Gail lost her long and courageous battle with cancer in July.
She was part of the Antiques & Design team for eight years (see Mary Narvell’s tribute to
Gail on page 11), and among her many contributions she was also very involved with the
specially designed Hermès scarf to honour kcwc’s 30th anniversary. Gail was a wonderful
contributor to our club and will be truly missed by many friends and colleagues.
ACTIVITY LEADERS’ UPDATE
Hello Ladies,
As Anne of Anne of Green Gables said, “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.
It would be terrible if we just skipped from September to November, wouldn’t it?” We
certainly wouldn’t want to miss out on all of the wonderful kcwc events which are planned
this month: two separate Walking trips in Alsace-Lorraine, private tours of Highgrove
Gardens, the World War I Gallery at the Imperial War Museum and BBC
Broadcasting House… plus LifeStyling are hosting their first event with a Back to Work
session. The many regular language, craft and cultural sessions are also back in full swing.
I’d particularly like to welcome Susie Whitfield who has set up the Foodies group and is
kicking it off with a Cookery day in the Cotswolds. If any member has any ideas for
activities they’d like to set up, please get in touch at [email protected]. Or contact me if
you’d like to join an existing activity committee – it’s a great way to get to know people.
On a more sombre note, I am deeply saddened to announce that Gail Reichert, a member
and Activity Leader for many years with Antiques & Design, passed away this summer. She
will be very much missed. We are all extremely grateful for her involvement with kcwc and
for her friendship as well.
ACTIVITY LEADERS’ TRAINING
The Activity Leaders’ Training session will be at the East India Club, Thursday 15 October
10:00 – 12 noon (coffee from 9:30am). I hope that as many Activity Leaders as possible will be
able to attend for tips ranging from managing accounting to learning about the latest website
features. If you haven’t already done so, please RSVP to me at [email protected].

OCTOBER GENERAL MEETING
Thursday 8 October 2015
9:30am – 12:30pm
The Royal Geographical Society
1 Kensington Gore, London SW7 2AR
(Closest tube: South Kensington or High Street Kensington)
GUEST SPEAKER: FRANCELLE BRADFORD WHITE
Author of Andrée’s War:
How One Young Woman Outwitted The Nazis
Based on Andrée’s diaries from the time and conversation over the
years, Francelle Bradford White recounts her mother’s incredible
story about her struggle and bravery that ultimately led to her being
awarded the Médaille de la Résistance, Croix de Guerre and the
Légion D’honneur.
“When my highly resourceful and intuitive mother Andrée was
diagnosed with Alzheimers, I found it very difficult to cope with
my emotions. As I watched this devastating disease take hold of her
personality I decided I would write about her enormous
achievements during WW2 when she had worked as a member of
the French resistance movement and which led to her being one of
the most highly decorated women of the war.”
Francelle Bradford White
Whilst researching her book, Francelle spent many hours going through the archives of Police
headquarters in Paris where she had worked. She meticulously searched through all the files
held at the Ministry of Defence in Vincennes on the resistance group and it’s members. She
quoted from her personal journals which describe day to day life under the occupation. She
visited the Chateau d’Orion in the Pyrenees, headquarters of Andrée’s resistance group where
intelligence destined for the allies and men wishing to escape France were taken before
making their perilous journey through the mountains to Spain.
NOVEMBER GENERAL MEETING
Thursday 5 November 2015
9:30am – 12:30pm
The Law Society
113 Chancery Lane, London WC2A 1PL
(Closest tube: Holborn or Chancery Lane)
GUEST SPEAKER: FELICITY ASTON
Author of Call of the White:Taking the World to the South Pole
Call of the White:The Commonwealth Women’s Antarctic Expedition
On December 29 2009, Felicity Aston arrived at the South Pole
with an international team of seven women after skiing 900km
from the coast of Antarctica in 38 days. The really remarkable part is
that just eight months previously many of the women in the team
had never seen snow, never put on a pair of skis, never experienced
sub-zero temperatures and never spent the night in a tent.
Representing the Commonwealth countries of Brunei Darussalam,
Cyprus, Ghana, India, Jamaica, New Zealand, Singapore and the
United Kingdom, this was the most unconventional team ever to
face the extreme hazards of Antarctica. During this talk Felicity tells
the fascinating and inspiring story of finding the women and
creating a team as well as their courageous journey to the bottom
of the world.

MEMBER INFORMATION
CHARITY CONNECTION
NEW MEMBERS/RENEWALS
Annual dues are £92.00. You can join or renew online at www.kcwc.org.uk. To join or
renew offline bring a cheque, debit card, or credit card to the General Meeting or alternatively
send a cheque made payable to kcwc, along with a filled-out membership form (available near
the back of the newsletter) to our bookkeepers, A/C Bookwise (Office 14, Greenhill House,
26 Greenhill Crescent, Watford Business Park, Hertfordshire WD18 8JA). Offline payments
may take longer to process. We incur significantly lower transaction charges if you use debit
cards or cheques.
A new membership is effective for 12 months from the date that payment is processed or a
member ID number is issued, whichever occurs first. Subsequent renewals are effective for
12 months from the original expiration date. Members who renew up to three months after
their expiration date will be considered to be renewing retroactively to their last expiration
date. After three months, the payment will be considered to be for a new membership.
Greetings all,
I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Nancy Thorington and I will
be serving as Vice President of the Board this year. I joined kcwc in 2007 and have enjoyed
participating in many wonderful activities over the years. As I reside both in London and
Houston, I have especially enjoyed the opportunity to learn about my adopted city and make
wonderful friends who share my interests in art history, antiques and design, travel and golf.
One of the responsibilities of the VP position is working with our chosen charity and for the
past year that charity has been Kids Company. As most of you will be aware, Kids Company
closed its doors in August. The charity had been under investigation for several months for
alleged mishandling of funds and breaches of financial control and subsequently lost much of
its funding. As reported, the charity did not have the reserves in place to support its on-going
activities and as a result was forced to cease operations. This is a very unfortunate situation for
the many children and families needing its services.
MEMBERSHIP CARDS
Membership cards are useful for attending General Meetings, signing up for and attending
Activities, using Member Benefits, and booking Showcase Tables. We have introduced new
cards from September 2015. The new cards will be issued first to new members when they
join and to current members as they renew their membership. You will still be able to request
a hand written card at General Meetings. If you are unable to attend a General Meeting, please
email [email protected] to request a membership card to be posted to you.
The June Luncheon auction proceeds did not reach Kids Company before its closure.
These funds, as with all kcwc charitable revenues, are held in a separate ring-fenced
account. It should be noted however that the proceeds raised earlier in the year, namely
through the Boucheron event and the December Designers Sale, were donated to Kids
Company as planned.
Have a friend who is interested in attending the General Meeting?
Guests are welcome at General Meetings. The guest fee is £10.00, redeemable if joining on
the day.
Going forward, the Board will be working to evaluate our future charity involvement and will
keep the membership informed. In the meantime, there are opportunities to volunteer your
time with the wonderful Volunteers for Charity activity group who go to various charities
in need of practical hands-on help.
MOVING HOUSE?
If you have a change of address, you can make those changes online. Simply log in, click on
My Account, and then click on the grey Edit box that appears below your Username. Enter
the new data and click on the Save button at the bottom of the page. Alternatively send an
email to [email protected], fill out a new form at the General Meeting, or drop a
line to A/C Bookwise at the address above.
I look forward to working alongside the many dedicated members of our Executive Board
and especially assisting Anna, who has been tirelessly acting as both President and VP for the
last year. I also look forward to meeting many of you at the General Meetings and at other
kcwc activities.
kcwc newsletters are sent only to UK addresses. If you are moving abroad, you can access the

Antiques & Design
Gail Reichert, back row second left, together with other kcwc Activity Leaders and members
Our Antiques team sadly announces the loss of our colleague and friend, Gail Reichert, to
cancer on 25 July in London. In Gail we say goodbye to someone so humble about her
accomplishments – a degree from Smith College, a Masters in Public Health from Yale
University, a Medical Society honours degree from Cornell Medical School, and a career as a
corneal surgeon in Florida before she and her husband Bob chose to live in London almost
two decades ago. Then she pursued a whole new interest completing the Design degree at
Chelsea Harbour School – no easy task. Many of you will remember Gail not only for her
wonderful Antiques events but for her instrumental role in making the kcwc 30th anniversary
special commission Hermès scarf a reality. For those who bought one, please wear it now in
her memory. Others may honour her with a donation to a charity in her name. Please contact
me for this information and the address to send condolences to her husband and son.
I miss my friend more than I can say. Respectfully, Mary Narvell

“We are all Adam’s children. But silk makes the difference.” Thomas Fuller
Perhaps no company in the world is as emblematic of silk as the French brand Hermès. Their
scarf or carré introduced in 1937, is synonymous with elegance and celebrity. Whether worn by
HM The Queen on country pursuits, by HSH Princess Grace as a sling supporting her broken
arm or the choice of bondage tool by Sharon Stone in the movie Basic Instinct, the Hermès
scarf is limitless in its applications and appeal. What makes it the scarf of choice for royalty and
commoner alike? Discover why when Hermès opens its doors privately to kcwc. Our own
Polly McElroy will share her story as a collector of over 800 vintage scarves revealing some of
her rare treasures. Representatives from the company will also explain the process behind the
product and why Hermès is the gold standard in silk.
A portion of the evening’s proceeds will support a charity in memory of Gail Reichert. Registration and

Ai WeiWei has been a significant force in the international art world for more than ten years.
This will be the first major institutional survey of his work ever held in Britain and it will
bridge over two decades of his extraordinary career. Our lecture will focus on the artist and
the work presented at the Royal Academy.
Curated in collaboration with Ai Weiwei from his studio in Beijing, the Royal Academy will
present some of his most important works; from the time he returned to China from the US
in 1993 right up to present day.
He is well known for his skilled craftsmanship and ability to master different materials and this
show will be a testament to that. Chosen works will explore a multitude of challenging
themes, drawing on his own experience to comment on creative freedom, censorship and
human rights.
Ben Street, art historian, BBC presenter and a kcwc favourite will be our lecturer.

Francisco de Goya (1746–1828) is one of Spain’s most celebrated artists. He was considered a
supremely gifted portrait painter and an excellent social commentator who took the genre of
portraiture to new heights through his ability to reveal the psychology of his sitter.
This landmark exhibition at the National Gallery is the first ever focusing solely on his
portraits and will re-appraise Goya’s genius as a portraitist and provide a penetrating insight
into both public and private aspects of his life. It will explore Goya’s ambitions and
development as a painter and his innovative and unconventional approach to portraiture
which often broke traditional boundaries.

dawn of the 19th century and in his own mind. We will then look at his legacy and influence
on Picasso, Ramon Casas and others. The three classes will focus successively on:
1) The Spanish tradition of painting
2) Goya’s modernity
3) Picasso and his entourage

If you would like to acquire an in-depth understanding of the Impressionist and PostImpressionist movements join us for this series of three lectures and a tour of the National
Gallery Impressionist collection.
The term ‘Impressionist’ was first used as an insult in response to an exhibition of a new type
of painting exhibited in Paris in 1874. Radicals in their time, early Impressionists sought to
explore new painting techniques and subject matter. Constructing paintings from freely
brushed colours they painted scenes of modern life, often en plein air. By the end of the 20th
century artists such as Van Gogh, Gauguin and Cezanne developed the course of modern art.
Join our favourite lecturer Jacqueline Cockburn as we explore how this originally radical
movement became increasingly popular and served as a precursor to many of the styles
dominating the 20th-century art world.

British bookseller Mr Frank Doel.Through their love of books and her warm and witty letters,
we see the bookseller’s British reserve gradually disperse and a friendship across the Atlantic
flourish for over twenty years. Helene’s book, based on their correspondence, has achieved
iconic status and became the highly successful film, 84, Charing Cross Road, that starred Anne
Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins. We shall meet in the stunning Café on the 5th floor.

Anita Anand, radio and TV journalist for 20 years, speaks on her riveting, recently published
book: Sophia: Princess, Suffragette, Revolutionary. This is a fascinating, true story that reveals the
life of Sophia Duleep Singh, born in London in 1876, goddaughter of Queen Victoria and
granddaughter of the illustrious last Maharajah of Lahore. Sophia’s father, as a young ruler of
only 11 years, was forced to sign away his wealthy kingdom, his family’s inheritance and move
to England, dependent on the graciousness of the Queen. Growing up as the youngest of five
children in their Suffolk home, Elveden Hall, where the Prince of Wales was a regular visitor,
Sophia saw her father’s ignominious fall from grace but found her own feet and courageously
devoted herself to battling the injustices and inequalities of the age. A two-course set lunch
will be available (at additional cost), for 30 ladies in the Grace Cafe at 12 noon after the talk
and book signing.

founded Londinium, the Italian Medieval monks who built monasteries – some now
atmospheric City churches – on to the Tudor merchant adventurers who were granted a
charter by Queen Elizabeth I to trade with the East Indies, and ending with the Stuart,
Georgian and Victorian Eras, this class will trace London on her ascent to become the capital
of the greatest Empire the world has ever seen. In this autumn class alternating between
lecture and tour, we will study the extraordinary and enthralling history of our home, looking
at how despite geography, Civil War, plague, fire and the Blitz, London is today the most
extraordinary world city of the 21st century.

Join us for a lively, surprising and even shocking historical pilgrimage through more than a
thousand years of European history. In this morning lecture and slide presentation, we will
uncover the emergence and development of the cult of St Leonard, a little known saint whose
origins were in fifth century Gaul during the final years of the Roman empire. Our lecture
will follow the trail through the Dark Ages to a corner of Aquitaine at the time of the first
millennium and show how the cult’s popularity rapidly spread throughout Europe, from
Norman England in the west, to Constantinople in the east and into our own day. This will be
a unique opportunity to learn more about this time period, prior to the opening of the
forthcoming Celtic Exhibition at the British Museum.

The beautiful English countryside is criss-crossed with many interesting walking routes. This is
a group for those who like to get out of the big city and explore the countryside on foot. We
will travel by train and also stop for a lunch break.
What to bring: Footwear is the most important piece of gear. Proper, broken in walking
boots will be more comfortable than trainers. Also essential are waterproof jackets and plenty
of water (especially on warm days). Walking poles are optional but can be useful on slippery
and steep terrain.
*Toughness Rating: Each of our walks has been given a rating between 1 (undemanding) to
9 (the most effort required). They take into account the amount of climbing, if there are
exceptionally steep sections, and the length of the walk.

The Travel Group has scheduled many new trips to satisfy our members’ keen interest in
travelling abroad with people they know or would like to know better. All of our past foreign
trips have been fully subscribed almost immediately and we understand this can be frustrating
for members who have not seen the early publicity for such tours. In an attempt to meet this
demand, we have scheduled a trip almost every month from March – November 2016. Please
note that many are still tentative at this time pending sufficient subscription.
We will attempt to see that a fair distribution of members is represented on the trips, although
the first-come, first served rule will generally apply.

The Gardens at Highgrove embody HRH The Prince of Wales’s environmental philosophy: “it
is better to work with nature than against it”. Since 1980 when The Prince of Wales first
arrived at Highgrove, His Royal Highness has devoted much energy to transforming the
gardens around the house. With the help and advice of notable individuals and the dedicated
assistance of the garden staff, what was once a somewhat bleak landscape is now one of the
most creatively inspired gardens of today. A series of interlinked areas, each with its own
character and purpose, weave magically around the garden.
For the last 25 years the gardens and surrounding land have been managed to the organic and
sustainable principles that His Royal Highness has for so long championed. Our group will

city of Salisbury which was planned and built from scratch in the fourteenth century. Inside
the new city they built one of the country’s finest cathedrals, opened in 1320. Most
importantly, it houses one of the four copies of the Magna Carta, which celebrates its 800-year
anniversary this year. This is probably the most clean and easy to read of all the copies. In the
cathedral and surroundings we will see many quirky and interesting features.

This three-night tour takes us back to medieval times when the Normans ruled not only
Sicily but much of Europe. During their brief hegemony (1072–1194) Norman invaders
proved themselves enlightened and appreciative of Sicily’s Arab culture, combining their
imprint upon the island’s Byzantine and Islamic architecture. We will follow the Normans’
footprints to the stunning town of Cefalu with visits to famous mosaics and privileged access
to lesser known abbeys and castles. It is said that the mosaics of Monreale rival those of
Ravenna and Venice. Mountain scenery and rolling hills complete a fascinating picture. Further
