This major retrospective will emphasise Hepworth’s often overlooked prominence in the international art world, of which she was a leading figure in the 1930s, and one of the most successful artists in the world during the 1950s and 1960s. The exhibition charts Hepworth’s progress from small carvings made as a young woman to the magnificent bronzes that became part of the great sculpture collections of the world. It will present many of her surviving prewar carvings, and some of her most significant sculptures in wood, stone and bronze. Our lecturer for the morning will be the inspiring art historian Dr James Hicks. This will be the first major institutional survey of his work ever held in Britain and it will bridge over two decades of his extraordinary career. Our lecture will focus on the artist and the work presented at the Royal Academy. Curated in collaboration with Ai Weiwei from his studio in Beijing, the Royal Academy will present some of his most important works; from the time he returned to China from the US in 1993 right up to present day. He is well known for his skilled craftsmanship and ability to master different materials and this show will be a testament to that. Page 14 September 2015 www.kcwc.org.uk This landmark exhibition at the National Gallery is the first ever focusing solely on his portraits and will re-appraise Goya’s genius as a portraitist and provide a penetrating insight Page 15 into both public and private aspects of his life. We will look back to the art of Goya’s predecessors such as El Greco, Zurbaran and Velazquez. We will then focus on Goya more closely and explore the turbulent times both in Spain at the dawn of the 19th century and in his own mind. We will then look at his legacy and influence on Picasso, Ramon Casas and others. The three classes will focus successively on: 1) The Spanish tradition of painting 2) Goya’s modernity 3) Picasso and his entourage IMPRESSIONIST ART SERIES When: Tuesdays 12, 19, 22 and 26 January; 10:00am Where: Carlton Club, 69 St James’s Street, SW1A 1PJ (Closest tube: Green Park) Cost: £100.00 Limit: 30 Register with Kathleen Cheek-Milby If you would like to acquire an in-depth understanding of the Impressionist and PostImpressionist movements join us for this series of three lectures and a tour of the National Gallery Impressionist collection. The term ‘Impressionist’ was first used as an insult in response to an exhibition of a new type of painting exhibited in Paris in 1874. Radicals in their time, early Impressionists sought to explore new painting techniques and subject matter. Constructing paintings from freely brushed colours they painted scenes of modern life, often en plein air. By the end of the 20th century artists such as Van Gogh, Gauguin and Cezanne developed the course of modern art. Join our favourite lecturer Jacqueline Cockburn as we explore how this originally radical movement became increasingly popular and served as a precursor to many of the styles dominating the 20th-century art world. Cost: £395.00 Limit: 35 Register with Josie Law Don’t miss kcwc’s longest running lecture series. Entering its 15th year, this survey course covers Western Art from Greek and Roman art to Contemporary Art. Under the guidance of Dr Chantal Brotherton-Ratcliffe, Director of the Master of Arts at Sotheby’s Institute, this course is taught by some of the best art experts in London. We will look at each of the following stylistic periods: • Ancient Greece • Ancient Rome • Medieval Art • Renaissance • Mannerism • Baroque • Rococo • Neo Classical • Romanticism • Pre-Raphaelite • Impressionism • Expressionism and Cubism • Surrealism and Pop Art • Conceptual Art The course runs from January 2016 to early June 2016. It includes 18 lectures (Wednesdays, 9:30am to 12 noon) and 10 museum tours (Fridays, 10:00am or 11:30am). Museum tours include visits to the British Museum, the National Gallery, the Wallace Collection, Tate Modern and Tate Britain. Toughness Rating: Each of our walks has been given a rating between 1 (undemanding) to 9 (the most effort required). Since 1980 when The Prince of Wales first arrived at Highgrove, His Royal Highness has devoted much energy to transforming the gardens around the house. With the help and advice of notable individuals and the dedicated assistance of the garden staff, what was once a somewhat bleak landscape is now one of the most creatively inspired gardens of today. A series of interlinked areas, each with its own character and purpose, weave magically around the garden. For the last 25 years the gardens and surrounding land have been managed to the organic and sustainable principles that His Royal Highness has for so long championed. Our group will have a private two-hour guided tour. Afterwards, we will enjoy refreshments (your own tab) and have time to visit the lovely Highgrove shop.
