PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
A very warm welcome to the new season of kcwc – its 33rd year. From
three humble American ladies meeting in a coffee shop in Chelsea the
Club has grown into one of the largest international women’s clubs in
London. We currently have about 800 members.
It is a privilege to serve as your President for another year and I would like
to welcome our new Board Members for 2015/16 season: Nancy
Thorington (Vice President), Rhoda Bucknill (Secretary), Susanne Cambern (Treasurer),
Dianne Stewart (Activity Leader Liaison), Jilly Ferrero (Potential Membership), Haydee

(Classifieds) and Emine Clark (Website Manager) we have a fantastic group of volunteers for
a great new Club year.
Our September General Meeting will take place at The Royal College of Surgeons, a
brand new venue for us. It is located in the beautiful Lincoln’s Inn Fields and is renowned
for being designed by the same architect as the Houses of Parliament. We are sure it will be
a venue in keeping with our high kcwc standards. Apart from socialising and signing up for
our fantastic activities, the meeting will be focusing on our regular Advertisers and Member
Benefit companies. Let’s show our support and appreciation by meeting them at the GM,
also, please do use our Advertisers and Member Benefits as much as possible and let them
know that you are from kcwc. They like to know that their involvement with our Club pays
off for them as well as the revenues which help us.

collaboration of fashion designers and artists on clothing collections, the links today are more
present but no less controversial than in years past. We welcome Jenna Rossi-Camus, our guide

Perhaps no company in the world is as emblematic of silk as the French brand Hermès. Their
scarf or carré introduced in 1937, is synonymous with elegance and celebrity. Whether worn by
HM The Queen on country pursuits, by HSH Princess Grace as a sling supporting her broken
arm or the choice of bondage tool by Sharon Stone in the movie Basic Instinct, the Hermès
scarf is limitless in its applications and appeal. What makes it the scarf of choice for royalty and
commoner alike? Discover why when Hermès opens its doors privately to kcwc. Our own
Polly McElroy will share her story as a collector of over 800 vintage scarves revealing some of
her rare treasures. Representatives from the company will also explain the process behind the
product and why Hermès is the gold standard in silk.
A portion of the evening’s proceeds goes to our kcwc supported charity, Kids Company, so registration and
payment via the kcwc website is NOT possible. Please email for registration and payment instructions

their historical and social context. Anne Haworth returns to kcwc to introduce us to the story
of shoes highlighting their cultural significance and transformative “powers” for women and

Tate Britain will open the first major Barbara Hepworth exhibition in London for almost fifty
years.
Britain’s famous female sculptor Barbara Hepworth (1903–75) is most commonly associated
with St Ives, Cornwall, where she lived from 1939 until her death in 1975.
This major retrospective will emphasise Hepworth’s often overlooked prominence in the
international art world, of which she was a leading figure in the 1930s, and one of the most
successful artists in the world during the 1950s and 1960s. The exhibition charts Hepworth’s
progress from small carvings made as a young woman to the magnificent bronzes that became
part of the great sculpture collections of the world. It will present many of her surviving prewar carvings, and some of her most significant sculptures in wood, stone and bronze. Our
lecturer for the morning will be the inspiring art historian Dr James Hicks.
AI WEIWEI AT THE ROYAL ACADEMY
When: Tuesday 6 October, 10:00am
Where: Carlton Club, 69 St James’s Street, SW1A 1PJ (Closest tube: Green Park)
Cost: £25.00
Limit: 30
Register with Karen Winget
Ai WeiWei has been a significant force in the international art world for more than ten years.
This will be the first major institutional survey of his work ever held in Britain and it will
bridge over two decades of his extraordinary career. Our lecture will focus on the artist and
the work presented at the Royal Academy.
Curated in collaboration with Ai Weiwei from his studio in Beijing, the Royal Academy will
present some of his most important works; from the time he returned to China from the US
in 1993 right up to present day.
He is well known for his skilled craftsmanship and ability to master different materials and this
show will be a testament to that. Chosen works will explore a multitude of challenging
themes, drawing on his own experience to comment on creative freedom, censorship and
human rights.
Ben Street, art historian, BBC presenter and a kcwc favourite will be our lecturer.
GOYA AT THE NATIONAL GALLERY
When: Tuesday 13 October, 10:00am
Where: Carlton Club, 69 St James’s Street, SW1A 1PJ (Closest tube: Green Park)

Francisco de Goya (1746–1828) is one of Spain’s most celebrated artists. He was considered a

portraiture to new heights through his ability to reveal the psychology of his sitter.

This landmark exhibition at the National Gallery is the first ever focusing solely on his
portraits and will re-appraise Goya’s genius as a portraitist and provide a penetrating insight

into both public and private aspects of his life. It will explore Goya’s ambitions and
development as a painter and his innovative and unconventional approach to portraiture
which often broke traditional boundaries.
Chantal Brotherton-Ratcliffe of Sotheby’s, a long-time kcwc favourite, will be our lecturer
for the morning.

dawn of the 19th century and in his own mind. We will then look at his legacy and influence
on Picasso, Ramon Casas and others. The three classes will focus successively on:
1) The Spanish tradition of painting
2) Goya’s modernity
3) Picasso and his entourage

If you would like to acquire an in-depth understanding of the Impressionist and PostImpressionist movements join us for this series of three lectures and a tour of the National
Gallery Impressionist collection.
The term ‘Impressionist’ was first used as an insult in response to an exhibition of a new type
of painting exhibited in Paris in 1874. Radicals in their time, early Impressionists sought to
explore new painting techniques and subject matter. Constructing paintings from freely
brushed colours they painted scenes of modern life, often en plein air. By the end of the 20th
century artists such as Van Gogh, Gauguin and Cezanne developed the course of modern art.
Join our favourite lecturer Jacqueline Cockburn as we explore how this originally radical
movement became increasingly popular and served as a precursor to many of the styles
dominating the 20th-century art world.
Cost: £395.00

Please use the Virago Modern Classic Edition. This true story began in 1949 with a letter
asking about second-hand books she required, being sent from Helene Hanff in New York, to
an independent bookshop in London.
A life-long correspondence ensued between the struggling American playwright Helene and
British bookseller Mr Frank Doel.Through their love of books and her warm and witty letters,
we see the bookseller’s British reserve gradually disperse and a friendship across the Atlantic
flourish for over twenty years. Helene’s book, based on their correspondence, has achieved
iconic status and became the highly successful film, 84, Charing Cross Road, that starred Anne
Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins. We shall meet in the stunning Café on the 5th floor.

Beginning with Deep Time when hippos grazed in Waterloo Place, through the Romans who
founded Londinium, the Italian Medieval monks who built monasteries – some now
atmospheric City churches – on to the Tudor merchant adventurers who were granted a
charter by Queen Elizabeth I to trade with the East Indies, and ending with the Stuart,
Georgian and Victorian Eras, this class will trace London on her ascent to become the capital
of the greatest Empire the world has ever seen. In this autumn class alternating between
lecture and tour, we will study the extraordinary and enthralling history of our home, looking
at how despite geography, Civil War, plague, fire and the Blitz, London is today the most
extraordinary world city of the 21st century.
Our class will meet every Monday morning for 9 weeks with lecturer and tour guide,
Caroline Macdonald-Haig whose extensive knowledge and delightful story-telling approach

Country Walks
Activity leader:
Emine Clark
[email protected]
The beautiful English countryside is criss-crossed with many interesting walking routes. This is
a group for those who like to get out of the big city and explore the countryside on foot. We
will travel by train and also stop for a lunch break.
What to bring: Footwear is the most important piece of gear. Proper, broken in walking
boots will be more comfortable than trainers. Also essential are waterproof jackets and plenty
of water (especially on warm days). Walking poles are optional but can be useful on slippery
and steep terrain.
Toughness Rating: Each of our walks has been given a rating between 1 (undemanding) to
9 (the most effort required). They take into account the amount of climbing, if there are
exceptionally steep sections, and the length of the walk.
COUNTRY WALK: BALCOMBE TO EAST GRINSTEAD
**CHANGE OF DATE**
When: Wednesday 23 September, 9:30am
Where: London Bridge Station, in front of ticket booths (Closest tube: London
Bridge)
Cost: £20.00 includes return train ticket; lunch is your own tab
Limit: 14
Total length: 17.2 km (10.7 miles); Toughness: 6 out of 10.
This walk has a fair number of relatively gentle ups and downs but is well worth the effort. It
starts in the old village of Balcombe, passes through the woods and reaches Wakehurst Place
(the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew’s country estate). From there the route continues through
some further woods finally reaching the station via a walk along a stream and through
potentially very muddy fields that mark the outer edges of East Grinstead.

the horse and carriage dominated the streets of London. Knowledgeable author, architect and
Director of Savills UK, Sebastian Deckker, will share with us the history of these aristocratic
estates in London and the development of the mews. He will also cover the preservation of
the equestrian character as well as the current styles of mews interiors that are designed to

The Gardens at Highgrove embody HRH The Prince of Wales’s environmental philosophy: “it
is better to work with nature than against it”. Since 1980 when The Prince of Wales first
arrived at Highgrove, His Royal Highness has devoted much energy to transforming the
gardens around the house. With the help and advice of notable individuals and the dedicated
assistance of the garden staff, what was once a somewhat bleak landscape is now one of the
most creatively inspired gardens of today. A series of interlinked areas, each with its own
character and purpose, weave magically around the garden.
For the last 25 years the gardens and surrounding land have been managed to the organic and
sustainable principles that His Royal Highness has for so long championed. Our group will
have a private two-hour guided tour. Afterwards, we will enjoy refreshments (your own tab)
and have time to visit the lovely Highgrove shop.

Personal endorsement:
“Shortly after moving to London, my husband suffered an incapacitating back spasm
on a Sunday morning. I had recently registered at the SKGP and called the 24 hour
number. Within two hours Dr Kapila was at our home, prescribed and delivered
medication and coordinated physio care in our home later that day. My husband was
up and about the next day, in the past these episodes often resulted in up to one
week of bed rest…”
