Rhonda Ellisor, Huntsville Rotary’s president, called
the regular luncheon meeting to order in the Community Room
of the West Hill Mall, with catering by McKenzie’s BBQ
Restaurant. Rotarian and Sam Houston U. Dean of Students,
John Yarabeck led the prayer and pledge. Rotarian Dennis Reed
called for introduction of guests. Rotarian Becky Martin
introduced her guest, Don Splece.
President Rhonda expressed Rotary’s sympathy for the family of
Rotarian Jacki Lawson in her family tragedy. Jacki Lawson
appreciates your prayers. Please continue to pray for the family.
At the Brag Bucket, Mayor J. Turner invited Rotarians
to visit the new H.E.A.R.T.S. Veterans Museum now under
construction in its pentagon architecture. President-Elect John
Yarabeck bragged on the great Bearkat basketball team entering
the playoffs this weekend. (Go BearKats!) Rotarian Becky
Martin FINALLY passed her real estate broker’s exam (whew!
applause!) Chamber of Commerce Executive Dee Everett
offered complimentary tickets for the Bearkat games. Rotarian
Richie Harris bragged, reminding Rotarians of the grand
opening at the Veterans’ Conference Center Saturday, March 21
and a special tribute to Madison Wolfe, official photographer to
General Douglas MacArthur ceremony at 3 p.m. There will be
music from the Huntsville Men’s Choir, a photo display and war
memorabilia. He also bragged that he caught a 6 pound bass,
likely weighed with a thumb on the scale.
Rotarian Becky Martin reminded Rotarians to help
support the International effort for Polio Plus and buy tickets to
the NIGHT FROM ITALY concert Friday, March 20 at the Old
Town Theater at 7 p.m. Begin the evening with a reception at
Giovani’s Restaurant from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. (Tickets are
available at the Main Street Office). Huntsville State Park
Superintendent Chris Holm happily bragged that they are
expecting their first child. Will Chris smile so happily when he
gets his first bill for college tuition? El Presidente’ Ellisor
invited Rotarians to the Rally in the Valley district conference in
Bryan/College Station April 24-26.
Rotarian David Standlee described his and Rhonda’s
recent trip to Nicaragua with a Power Point presentation of
colorful photos of the scenic area. In Nicaragua District 5910 is
involved in water well drilling, thereby aiding Nicaraguans to
have clean drinking water in their hillside villages. The current
center for drilling operations is now in the City of León. Rotary
has drilled approximately 20 water wells and plan to drill
another 35-40. The drilling rig operation is handled out of Tulsa
but Nicaraguans now are trained to operate the drilling rig which
is comparable in size to a 1500 rig. Rotarians have built a
pipeline to one remote village where no fresh water could be
located by drilling. Our district governor asked Rhonda and
David to look around in Nicaragua where Rotary might build a
one-room school at a reasonable cost. They found a location and
would like to take a group of Huntsville Rotarians back to
Nicaragua to participate in the project.
President Ellisor closed by leading Rotarians in the
Four Way Test, the pledge of all Rotarians: Is it the Truth? Is it
Fair to all concerned? Will it build Goodwill and Better
Friendships? Will it be Beneficial to all Concerned? Huntsville
Rotary adds a fifth, Is it Fun?

The concert will benefit Rotary International’s Polio
Annika Kaschenz
Plus, an effort to eradicate Polio. Funds will help
Rotary to match a $100 million challenge grant from
the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and will directly support immunization
campaigns in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and
paralyze children, robbing them of their futures.
