Not by our own power
Maybe it doesn’t occur frequently, but there
are times when things turn out so well for us that
we may even believe we are powerful or important.
But then, if we only rely on our own strength, we
can become frustrated when things don’t turn out
as well as we expected. Believing we could resolve
our own problems, when we find ourselves incapable
of doing so, we feel depressed.
In today’s readings we are advised not to lose
our joy. That is our vocation as Christians. But our
joy does not come from being able to do lots of
things or from our own triumphs and victories. It is
from trusting Jesus, who is coming, and has the
power to change our life. He is our hope and can
truly give us the strength to carry on with our
mission in life.
John was well known and admired for the power
of his preaching. He could have passed himself off
as the one the Israelites’ were waiting for, but
John knew well who he was and where his strength
was derived. He was only a voice that called out in
the desert and proclaimed the coming of God. He
said he was only a voice, but he wasn’t dissuaded
from carrying out his responsibilities.
He fulfills his mission although it may
sometimes appear to be uncomfortable or difficult.
He knows where his strength is derived. He does
not proclaim himself and does not seek fame or
prestige for himself, but for the Lord who is
coming.
Who do we think we are? From where does our
strength and ability to fulfill our mission in this
life come from? Do we do things so we can be
praised or to feel good about ourselves?
For reflection
What achievements do I feel satisfied with? Do I
feel that I have achieved everything through my own
strengths? When something does not work out the
way I want it, am I frustrated and discouraged? Do I
always expect to be praised when I do things well?
How can I be the voice and message of the love Jesus
has for everyone? What things take away my joy?

FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS … once again, a
suggestion that funeral plans be made ahead of
time … a funeral is expensive, the funeral homes
are expensive and, if you do not have a cemetery
plot, that is expensive. Pre-planning and prepaying are important things to do and makes the
experience for the family much easier at the time
of dying and death.

NO 7AM MASS … during the Christmas break there
will be no 7 am Mass from December 22nd until

VOLUNTEERS DINNER … once again thanks to the
generosity of a friend of the parish, Mr. Stuart
Miller, we will be hosting our annual volunteers
dinner on Saturday, January 17th. We begin with
the 5:30 pm Mass followed by dinner and dancing
in the auditorium. Each parish volunteer is invited
to bring a guest. Please no one under 18 years of
age. Please complete the coupon below and place
it in the collection basket or give it to one of the
priests.

THANK YOU … to the Comite Hispano for the
Advent Retreat last Saturday. There were about
30 people present for the conferences,
confessions and Holy Hour.
THANK YOU … to the Pax Christi Sisters for the
celebrations of Our Lady of Guadalupe last week …
the Masses, the mañanitas (morning songs), the
fiesta and food.
FAMILY CATECHESIS … is today. Please come to
the school cafeteria and speak with the Pax Christi
Sisters. The family catechesis is a program to
involve the parents and families in the religious
education of their children. Religious education
begins in the home and we hope to assist our
parents to become the best and first teachers of
their children in the ways of faith.
ADVENT EVENING PRAYER AND SONG … all are
invited to the bi-lingual celebration of Advent on
Friday, December 19 at 7:45 pm in the church.
The service will be presented by the Coro Hispano
of the Archdiocese of New York under the
direction of Mrs. Rosario Granda. You are able to

ARREGLOS FUNERALES... Una vez más, una
sugerencia para que haga sus planes funerales con
tiempo por adelantado... Un funeral es caro... Las
funerarias son caras y, si usted no tiene un lugar
separado en el cementerio, eso también es caro.
La Pre-planeación y el pre-pagado son cosas
importantes de hacer para que la experiencia para
la familia sea más fácil en el momento de la
agonía y la muerte.

GRACIAS... A las Hermanas Pax Christi por la
celebración de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe la
semana pasada. Las Misas, las Mañanitas(cantos de
la Mañana), la fiesta y comida.
CATEQUESIS FAMILIAR... Es hoy. Por favor venga a
la cafetería y hable con las Hermanas Pax Christi.
La catequesis familiar es un programa para
envolver a los padres y familias en la educación
religiosa de sus hijos. La Educación Religiosa
comienza en el hogar y esperamos poder asistir a
los padres para que sean los mejores y primeros
maestros de sus hijos en los caminos de la fe.
TARDE DE ORACIÓN Y CANTOS DE ADVIENTO...
Todos están invitados a la celebración bi-lingüe de
adviento el Viernes 19 de Diciembre a las 7:45 de
la noche. El servicio cera presentado por el Coro
Hispano de la Archidiócesis de Nueva York bajo la
dirección de la Señora Rosario Granda. Usted está
invitado a participar en oración y en canto en este
servicio tan hermoso. El servicio será dedicado a
la memoria de una de nuestros feligreses por
mucho tiempo y miembro del Coro--- la Señora
Miguelina Aguilera, que descanse en paz!
NO MISA DE LAS 7 DE LA MAÑANA... durante las
vacaciones de Navidad no habrá Misa a las 7 de la

CATHOLIC GUARDIAN SOCIETY Y
HOME BUREAU en conjunto con el
Departamento de Servicios de Maternidad le
provee consejería gratuita para toda persona
sin repara en edad, estatus legal, religión, raza o
estatus económico, que se le presenta la
preocupación de un embarazo inesperado. La
consejera es proveída por trabajadores sociales
profesionales quienes les programan una cita
en un lugar conveniente como las oficinas de
Caridades Católicas, en su casa o algún lugar
que usted escoja o prefiera. El personal le
ofrece apoyo y seguimiento en conserjería,
ayuda para obtener cuidado prenatal, referidos
de vivienda, WIC, asistencia financiera
limitada, ropa de maternidad, ropa para el
bebe, panales desechables, algunos artículos
para el bebe, asistencia legal (pensión
alimenticia), como cuidar del bebe y clases para
el cuido del bebe, discusiones sobre toda
opción disponibles para aconsejar a los padres.
El personal quiere envolver las madres de los
menores y al mismo tiempo, también incluir a
los padres expectantes. Nosotros mantenemos
contacto con los clientes aproximadamente 8
semanas después que el niño nace.
Nosotros también estamos autorizados por el
estado de nueva York como una agencia de
adopción y ofrecemos una grande cantidad de
consejería,
educación,
servicios
de
colocaciones (para los padres) al igual para
padres de crianzas en adición para conducir
estudios de la casa para adopciones
internacionales.

No por nuestro propio poder
Quizá no sea frecuente, pero sí e posible que a
veces nos salgan las cosas tan bien, que lleguemos a
creernos poderosos o importantes. Pero luego, si
confiamos todo a nuestras propias fuerzas, a veces
nos frustramos cuando algo no va tan bien como
pensábamos. Creíamos que podíamos resolver
nuestros propios problemas y, cuando nos vemos
incapaces, nos sentimos decaídos.
En las lecturas de hoy se nos aconseja no perder
la alegría. Esa es nuestra vocación como cristianos.
Pero nuestra alegría no viene de que podemos hacer
muchas cosas; no viene de nuestros propios
triunfos y victorias, sino de la convicción de quien
viene, es decir, Jesús, es quien tiene el poder de
cambiar nuestra vida. Es Él nuestra esperanza y
quien de verdad nos puede dar fuerza para llevar a
cabo nuestra misión en la vida. Juan era bien
conocido y admirado por la fuerza de su
predicación. Podría haberse hecho pasar por aquel a
quien esperaban los israelitas. Pero Juan sabe muy
bien quién es y de dónde le viene la fuerza. Él sólo
es la voz que calma en el desierto y anuncia la
llegada de Dios. Dice “sólo” es esa voz, pero no se
retrae de hacerlo. Cumple con su misión aunque a
veces puede parecer incomoda y difícil. Sabe de
dónde le viene la fuerza. No se anuncia a sí mismo;
no quiere la fama y el prestigio para sí mismo, sino
para el Señor que viene.
¿Quién nos sentimos que somos nosotros? ¿De
dónde vendrá nuestra fuerza y capacidad para
cumplir nuestra misión en esta vida? ¿Hacemos las
cosas para que nos alaben, o para sentirnos bien
con nosotros mismos?
Para la reflexión
¿De qué logros me siento satisfecho? ¿Siento que
he hecho todo esto por mis propias fuerzas?
Cuando algo no me sale bien, ¿me siento frustrado y
desanimado? ¿Espero siempre alabanzas cuando
hago bien las cosas? ¿Como será que puedo ser yo
la voz y el mensaje de amor de Jesús para todos?
¿Qué cosas me quitan la alegría?
ST. RAYMOND’S YOUNG ADULTS (SRYA) & LIFE LINE

St. Raymond’s Young Adults, for ages 18-49, meets one Saturday each month at 7:30pm for
Eucharistic Adoration followed by fellowship and a discussion on a relevant topic of faith.
Upcoming Adoration/discussion night: Sat. Jan. 10th 7:30pm beginning in Church.
LifeLine, for ages 18-25, travels to Catholic Underground at OL Good Counsel in Manhattan
usually the first Saturday of each month. We also gather for periodic discussions/fellowship,
usually coinciding with college breaks. We are also planning a couple of service activities this
year. Join us!! Next Catholic Underground: Sat. Jan. 3rd 7:30pm (meet at 6:30). Next
discussion night: Fri. Jan. 2nd 7pm at 1720 Metropolitan Ave. LifeLine is invited to the LIFE
TEEN Christmas party on Sun. Dec.21st, beginning with the 4:30 Mass. There is also a trip being
planned to Manhattan to see the Christmas lights, etc. Please make sure we have your email

4:30pm LIFE TEEN MASS each Sunday for teenagers, young adults, their families and
friends. Please join us as we worship the Lord as one family in a “youth-friendly” style where
the music and the homily are geared for the younger generation. Our high school aged youth are
invited to serve as ushers, greeters, readers, and altar servers.
Life Night for high school age youth every Sunday following the 4:30pm LIFE TEEN MASS,
from 6-8:30pm, usually in the Auditorium.
Life Night for Sun. Dec.14th – Life Night on the Sacrament of Reconciliation with the
opportunity to have a one-on-one encounter with Jesus in this great sacrament of mercy. Let us
continue to prepare our hearts for Jesus through prayer, sacrifice and service!
Service opportunity: Help with the distribution of food and presents to families in need. Sat.
Dec. 20th & we will likely have to do another day either the 22nd or 23rd.
Life Night for Sun. Dec.21st – Christmas party LIFE TEEN style! Real home-cooked food
(thank you Core members & volunteers!), unique games, prizes, dancing, and a skit at the end.
College age “alumni” home for Christmas are invited!
