The Generations
of Greenwood…
I am not sure John W. Madden, Jr. and J. Madden realized
when they were building Greenwood over 26 years ago,
that it would evolve into such a community in and of itself.
Sitting on 13 acres in Greenwood Village, GATC has
become a focal point on the corner of Quebec and
Orchard with a manicured lawn, expansive flower
additions, a combination of traditional and modern
architecture, and cherry blossom trees that produce some
of the most beautiful photos in the city. But it isn’t the
outside that makes Greenwood what it is today, it’s what
happens inside and the people that pass through our
doors that make our 8,000 members and 240 staff
members part of a community filled with inspiration,
motivation, hard work, laughter and fun!
Greenwood has been home to tens of thousands of people
over the past 26 years, some of whom have been here
from day one and are still here today; growing up with
us! Featured on the cover is the Melton family, Tom and
Jill (joined October of 1987), their daughter Ashley, their
son Brandon, his wife Kati and their children Ava and
Addison; three generations of Greenwood members! The
Melton’s are not our only three-generation members,
there are many more. Another great story is Greg and
Ann Fulton who are Charter members of GATC. They
joined with their daughter Sara over 26 years ago before
the club opened. Sara grew up at GATC, joined our staff,
met her husband Joe Talbert at the club and they have
three children, Juliana, Evie and JJ, all Greenwood
members!
When I walk the club, talk to members, read your survey
responses and study our data, what I find is that
Greenwood is so much more than an athletic and tennis
club; it’s a place people call home and surround
themselves with friends and family. We need to deliver
the best member experience possible and one way is
making sure each member feels they belong to our
extended Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club family. We
will keep our equipment new and clean, we will continue
to upgrade where necessary, we will add cutting edge
programs and services and we will continue to train our
staff to deliver an experience like no other. Our MXM
survey is helping us fine tune operations and training. We
know our members have come to expect the best from
GATC and we are prepared to deliver!
I wish each of you a healthy and happy New Year and I
look forward to seeing you and generations of your family
at the club!

Member SPOTLIGHT!
Karen Kafadar
Karen first joined Greenwood in 1992, left for a few years and rejoined in
2007 to enjoy the new six lane 25 meter outdoor pool. Being a single
member, Karen also enjoys the sense of community and the social
atmosphere GATC provides. She especially enjoys chatting with other
members like Pam Thomas and Karen Giem, and seeing Crystal, Virginia,
Susan, Tim and Mr. Madden at the pool, all of whom make the club special
to her and keep her connected both socially and physically.
Karen was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis 35 years ago. She has not
let her condition prevent her from taking full advantage of what Greenwood
has available, though her main focus is the pool. A contemporary once said
“If a day goes by and you haven't been to the pool, then you must be in
the hospital!" Not much else will prevent her from getting to the pool. her dedication
is proven by the fact that she rides her bike to the club year round! In 1985 her physician
said, “I cannot prescribe a drug for you that will be as effective as swimming and biking.”
Karen taught math at the university of Colorado at denver and is currently a professor
of statistics at Indiana university. “It is always possible to make time for something
important in your life” and she proves this every day.
One experience Karen shared is the time she was having a flare up and almost opted not
to come in. She came in anyway and stopped at the Welcome desk to see if someone
could help her. The staff person walked her to the elevator, took her to the locker room
and assisted her into the pool. She said it was as if she had simply asked for a glass of
water. Nothing unusual - it is just what GATC does.
“I try to always keep a positive attitude”, Karen says. Words for us all to live by!

DECISIONS; THE PROS AND THE CONS
When making important decisions, especially those with the potential to affect
your life for years to come, it is often wise to make a detailed list of pros and cons.
This process can be extremely helpful when evaluating a new job opportunity,
deciding which home to buy, choosing the best college to attend or even which
vehicle is best for your family. The hope is that the pros associated with one option
will significantly outweigh the cons of the other. This process should help make the
decision simple and clear. When deciding whether or not to exercise each day, the
decision should be easy! There are no cons to exercise, barring injury of course.
Every time you decide to move, whether by running, Spinning, swimming, strength
training, taking Pilates, Yoga, or joining a program like Snow Sports Conditioning,
there are only benefits. Your heart, your mind, your muscles and your bones all
get stronger. Every step, lunge, stroke or plank creates a training affect with associated benefits that last far beyond that
workout. Studies also verify that people who exercise not only decrease their risk of disease, but their general, overall,
daily outlook improves dramatically simply by increasing movement. Who wouldn’t want that? What are you waiting for?
Choosing to exercise is AlWAYS the best decision. There are no CONS to exercise and your decision to move your body
will influence how you feel and how you live for the rest of your life. don’t let a busy schedule stop you. Trim something
from your life that does have a con and replace it with exercise. Add exercise to your family time and build positive
habits together. Make the easiest, clearest, best decision you can ever make – exercise for yourself and for those who
love you!

FEWER FAT CELLS=LOWER CANCER RISK
Scientists have known since the early 2000's that there is a strong relationship between number of fat cells and cancer
risk. Cancers such as breast, endometrial, colon, esophageal, kidney, leukemia, cervical, liver, gallbladder, ovarian,
aggressive prostate and pancreas have a linear relationship. In other words, the more overweight you are, the higher
the possibility that you may get these cancers.
Too many fat cells means that the body produces more hormones that cause cancer. For example, the hormone insulin,
like growth factor one, is a hormone that stimulates cells to grow. This can be a good thing in terms of growing healthy
cells for tissues and organs. however, an abundance of this hormone can also cause unhealthy cells to grow, such as
cancerous tumors. This particular hormone is associated with an increase in cell growth, which creates tumors.
If you are not overweight, think about the amount of fat compared to muscle on your body. Just because one is not
overweight, does not mean you are not at risk. One can be at ideal weight but have excess body fat.
looking to change your body? Start with these tips:
1. If you are overweight, set a goal of losing 10% of your body weight. Not only will this amount reduce your risk of
cancer, diabetes and heart disease but it is an achievable goal.
2. Exercise daily. Cardio, strength training, group exercise, yoga, pilates, swimming and tennis are all great ways to
mix it up. If you need guidance, please see Sheri Warren, Member Coach.
3. Keep a food journal. The easiest, most convenient way to do it is on your smart phone, computer or tablet. My
Fitness Pal is one of many great websites to use.
remember, skinny does not mean healthy or fit. We have to live a lifestyle full of nutritious foods and exercise daily.

THE VALUE IN MARTIAL ARTS
Martial arts training refers to any form of training that is based on movements historically developed in combat or self
defense. Below is a sampling of martial arts from around the world:
Kung Fu - Chinese - historically created by monks to defend themselves
Karate - Japanese or Okinawan - relies on empty hand kicking and punching
Judo - Japanese throwing art
Kickboxing - various countries - this art practices striking
Boxing - originally English - hands only sport derived from Kung Fu
Jeet Kune do - developed by Bruce lee to fit each individual differently
Wrestling - dating as early as pre roman times- a form of grappling for one person to submit
Tae Kwon do - Korean - focuses on kicking with some punching
Kali - Filipino weaponry martial art created from combat
Tai Chi - an internal martial art that has been proven to be beneficial for seniors
Some people begin martial arts training for the physical workout, while others use it for the self discipline it provides.
Others use it for self defense or combat skills. Not everyone who studies martial arts is a fighter or wants to fight. Some
enjoy the camaraderie and group setting while learning about the sport and working out.
Martial arts training also provides a complete body workout. Flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, anaerobic strength and
body weight strength training are areas of fitness that martial art training addresses. Aside from providing these fitness
benefits, it also addresses balance, coordination and footwork, when applying techniques.
Martial arts training also helps self confidence and self esteem. Knowing how to protect yourself and feel confident in a
difficult situation is a huge factor in having a positive life. The confidence one gains as well as the empowering feel it
gives you is something no other activity offers.
It is my personal belief that martial arts training is something everyone should undertake at some point in their life. The
mental and physical benefits surpass many other forms of activities. As a practitioner of several martial arts for over 20
years and as an expert in fitness, I truly believe the benefits of this type of training are unlimited.

Even though I’m looking at the snow from my office, I know
that summer swimming is only a few months away.
Swimming during the winter is the best way to be prepared
for summer time by the pools. Our Parent Tot classes,
SwimAmerica learn to swim program and our adult swim
classes will help build confidence for any age swimmer.
Our popular Stroke School 45 minute class is perfect for
ages 6-13, who can swim two lengths of the pool with side
breathing, one length of backstroke and butterfly. We offer
a variety of classes that will help get your swimmer ready
for Swim Conditioning, Tiger Sharks Swim Team and
summer swimming. Contact Crystal for more information.

COMMITMENT
developing a program that kids want to join is a difficult
task, especially for an athletic team that occupies 70% of
their free time. Four of our six groups are in the water six
days a week, with the top group swimming nine times
during that period. It’s a lot to ask of anyone at any age,
yet these are the requirements and expectations of the
Greenwood Tiger Sharks.
Imagine being a middle schooler going to a Friday night
football game after two hours of swimming and one hour
of weights, knowing that you will be waking up before
sunrise on Saturday to swim for another two hours. Or a
high schooler whose friends are making plans to go hang
out and watch a movie after the game, to which you must
reply, “Sorry guys, I need to be on deck at 6:30am for
practice. I’ll see you tomorrow night.” Neither scenario is
the easiest for teenagers to manage. Yet the athletes on
this team face it, or something similar, every Friday
evening. Not only do they swim early on Saturdays, but
many swim very early on Tuesdays, Thursdays and/or
Fridays, practicing for an hour before school and returning
to the pool to swim for another two hours in the afternoon.
how do you get kids, ages 9-12, to give up after-school
fun in the neighborhood or extra-curricular activities to be
at the pool for an hour or two most afternoons? There are
a lot of things that are missed when you spend your
afternoons practicing yoga or running, followed by an hour
and a half of swimming, all while still completing your
homework. how hard is it to make those sacrifices to miss
the football game or to skip out on baseball with your
friends from school?
Why do kids, ages 9-18, step away from these other
activities to commit to their swim team? What helps them
buy into the program? Is it the coaches, the club or their
friends on the team? The coaches push them to hold one
another accountable, to make the commitment, and to
make the Tiger Sharks their family. Their relationship with
their coaches and more importantly, with one another
helps motivate them to be at Greenwood at 6:30am on
Saturdays. (Of course, sharing post-workout breakfasts
helps too.) They listen to the coach’s guidance and learn
that their goals are attainable. This helps them commit
not only to their sport, but also to their teammates, to
their coaches and to the Tiger Sharks, their extended
family!
*Prices do not include race entry fees, but do include both
the in-person and online coaching and nutrition
consultations (one 30 minute consult during the Pre-season

ARE YOU A BALL MACHINE FAN?
It just got better!
I’ll say right up front that I’m a huge advocate of practicing with a ball machine. I’ve been utilizing ball machines as an
integral part of player development for over 30 years! We’re very fortunate here at Greenwood to have three of the best
ball machines available and I’m extremely happy to announce that you now have access to one of the coolest features
in ball machine technology that I’ve ever seen. I should point out that we’re one of the few clubs in the country and for
sure the only club in Colorado to make this available to members.
Believe it or not, you can now control one of our machines with an iPhone or iPad. Simply download the app “like My
drill” in the iPhone only section of the app store and you will own an extremely powerful training tool. This app has over
60 drills preloaded, you select the drill and since the machine has been pre-calibrated, all that’s left is to touch the start
button. Another cool feature of the program is that each drill has a short video that demonstrates exactly how the drill
works. You also have the ability to customize the program and create your own drills or tweak the preloaded drills to
suit your specific needs or level. regardless of whether you choose one of the pre-loaded drills or one of your own, the
reduction in setup time will be greatly reduced. You know what this means, more hitting and less setup leads to
maximizing your training time!
As you can see, you have unique opportunities to train whether you use our new iMachine or perhaps the return lift to
practice your return of serve. Both are effective training tools and we encourage you to give them
a try. We also offer ways for you to take advantage of cost effective programs such as the Ball
Machine Addict punch card which provides you with a free machine rental on your sixth
session. The best value is our Ball Machine Club which allows you unlimited use for a year
for a flat fee of $250, a huge savings for the frequent user!
I hope you’ll give the iMachine a try. There are endless practice possibilities and most
importantly, it’s a lot of fun! let me know if you have questions, I look forward to seeing you
on the courts!

Marda Zechiel | Yoga Manager | 303.770.2582 x324 | [email protected]
MINDFULNESS IS MEDITATION
The idea of meditation causes panic and resistance in most
people. Sitting still for an hour trying to keep your mind
from wandering is a difficult, seemingly impossible task for
most. Visions of a yogi sitting in lotus position in front of
Buddha come to mind!
In reality, mediation can be a much broader practice.
Meditation can be as simple as facilitating mindfulness,
rather than a classic seated practice. Mindfulness means
taking the time to stop and smell the roses, so to speak.
Take a few minutes each day to take in your surroundings
and stop multitasking. Mindfulness practice can be achieved
by simply turning off your radio on the way to work as you
take in another beautiful Colorado morning, taking a slow
walk around the block, listening to soft music, sitting under
a tree eating your lunch or a yoga practice.
The trick is to do one thing a day with absolute mindfulness.
Focus completely in that moment, feel everything, every
physical sensation, every emotion that comes to the
surface. Breathe slowly and smile at the stillness.
The easiest technique to help you get started is breathing.
Conscious breathing truly is the difference between feeling
anxious and feeling relaxed. Try adding a few rounds of
4,4,8 count breath into your daily routine. Inhale for four
counts, hold for four counts and exhale for eight counts.
Close your eyes. Be slow and repeat.
Namaste!

WHAT’S YOUR STORY?
In movement, everyone has a story. At birth, our story begins and continues to develop to be what it is today. Although
it takes time and history to create that story, there is opportunity to redefine how your story reads in the future. You
might be asking, what story?
Our bodies have shaped to our habitual activities. No two bodies are the same; it is our musculoskeletal system that
provides each of us our unique shape and story. Our bodies are shaped not only by genetic code, but from the
experiences (physical and emotional) we have encountered. We are shaped by the sports we play and have played, the
jobs we perform, our hobbies and the injuries we have sustained. Often, the things we love to do, or things we have
done repeatedly in the past, create imbalance.
With every client that walks in the Pilates studio, comes a physical shape that tells a story about their life. Picture the
man that spent years in an office rounded over a computer who was a weekend warrior on a road bike. Sometimes the
story comes free of pain but in most cases, people are dealing with discomfort or pain on a daily basis.
THE FACTS:
• Sedentary lifestyles lead to disease and imbalances throughout the musculoskeletal system
• Injury reverberates through the entire body leading to faulty movement patterns
• depression and stress “pull down” posture and negatively affect our movement
• routine leads to the over-recruitment of some of the muscles while others are under-utilized
• Improper training programs exacerbate muscular imbalance
As a result, our bodies forget how to move properly and the brain recognizes movement patterns, not muscles or muscle
groups, and these basic patterns of movement build sequentially, beginning in infancy and developing throughout
childhood. Pilates is a great way to reverse the patterns, providing a workout that restores muscle balance, movement
efficiency and builds endurance in the deep intrinsic muscles that support the skeleton and spine.
Pilates was developed decades ago to help align imbalances. It is the perfect form of exercise to deconstruct negativity
in the body. As a form of exercise practiced on a regular basis, Pilates examines the integration of movement and impact
on function. Instructors are trained to study the functional
and dysfunctional patterns in the body and are skilled at
constructing series of exercises to create balance. It is our
mission to cater to individual needs with a plan that will
gradually change what might currently be a negative
(imbalance) into a positive (balance).
“Pilates was
developed
decades ago
to help align
imbalances.”
16
remember that the body is always learning, with every
workout and every movement. Therefore, the quality of
movement dictates the outcome. Pilates is a powerful way to
improve stability and movement efficiency. When practiced
alone or in combination with traditional fitness modalities, it
educates and creates body awareness. The simple words
“change happens through movement and movement heals”
underscore the fact that the body learns by doing. What
story is your body telling you or are you telling your body?

APPRECIATING OUR MEMBERS
I have had the pleasure of being involved in
the planning of our Member Appreciation
Party for a number of years now. GATC is proud of our
sense of community and we enjoy expressing our
appreciation to our members every November. We seem
to have found a way to entertain everyone with two styles
of music for dancing, our ever popular casino and the
opportunity to socialize with other members. Members
diane and Barry Samet love the casino, Brandon and Kati
Melton dance the night away in Studio 1 and Pam and
david Thomas enjoys our band every year.
We choose a different theme from year to year to change
up the décor and the food, and the band plays some of
their music reflecting that theme. This also gives
members and staff a chance to change our attire from
formal at our Still Sparking Anniversary party in 2007 and
our Oscar Night in 2011, to a more fun and casual denim
and diamonds in 2013 and everything in between. Our
goal is truly to offer something for everyone!
We receive a few comments asking us not to spend dues
dollars on the party from members who do not attend but
many of you look forward to our party every year and add
it to your calendars as soon as the date is announced!
Between 1300 and 1500 of you attend every year and we
hope that those who have not, will come in 2014 on
November 8!

another successful event with about 1300 members
in attendance. One of my favorite parts of the night
is the opportunity I get to greet each one of you
when
you
enter
the
building. This year we found
a number of members who
attended their first party
and had a blast. Many of
them said they didn’t realize
what they were missing and
they will definitely come
back next year. remember,
it’s the second Saturday of
November so mark your
calendars for 2014!
