Yet, God tells us that only the hand that is open to give can also be open to receive His peace and joy. A heart or a hand clenched in anxiety and greed can never truly receive anything. JANUARY 29, 2012 ~ THE FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Thoughts For The Week Dear Sisters and Brothers, Recently I read and article about a movie that was to be a true story of one woman’s struggle against the military authorities in a corrupt South American country. But the director and leading actress were in dispute about the interpretation of the character’s role. The scriptwriter had not made it clear. So the studio authorities called in a variety of people who had worked with the real character or who had studied her life and actions. A professor, a leading authority on modern South American history, shone some light, but the character remained an enigma. Even the authorized biography left gaps in the full picture. Eventually they decided to consult the woman herself, now living quietly in Australia. She was the only real authority on what had motivated her. She was the author of her own story, her life. As a result, the script was changed, and the actress went on to play the role with real conviction, her authoritative performance winning her an Oscar. Note the number of times the word “authority” and its derivatives are used, in many different senses. There is one use of authority, usually in the plural, applying to those people whose office endows them with power over others, for good or ill – “the authorities”. Then there is the authority of expertise, knowledge being a form of power. “Authorized” implies something official, approved, genuine; and “authoritative” has the strength of truth and conviction about it. All stem, in fact, from the word “author” – an original creator, the real source of authority on that which is created. In today’s Gospel Lesson, when Jesus taught in the synagogue, his authority was derived not from the power of holding a religious office, nor from mere expertise. For he was no ordained rabbi, nor a scholarly scribe, and, although Luke’s Gospel reports that even at a young age he had astounded the teachers in the Temple, he was not an academic. The authority that Jesus possessed, then and now, is from his being one with the Author, the Creator, of the very truth he propounded. Also his words and his acts were one and the same. As his teaching could fill the mind and heart with the wonder of God’s love, so his acts could restore broken people to wholeness and God’s peace. As God creates the world by His word alone, so Jesus uses his words alone to subdue the forces of evil that had taken possession of the man in the congregation. On the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, the voice from heaven at Jesus’ baptism had acknowledged his identity. In our account today, another supernatural being does the same. Jesus’ authority is drawn not from this world but from the divine. Although there were many teachers of the law and interpreters of Scripture at the time, and many exorcists and healers, none was invested with this direct authority. Yet, even while Jesus restores health and wholeness, hostility and conflict are ever present. In today’s Gospel Lesson, the unclean spirit immediately recognizes Jesus and, in the act of leaving its human host, causes the man to suffer convulsions. The competing authorities of good and evil are ranged against each other from the start. Hostility between them is a constant theme in St. Mark’s Gospel, although we know who ultimately triumphs. The people in the accounts are challenged to take sides: the disciples, the authorities, the people in the crowds, the listeners. So are we. When we hear the uncompromising position Jesus takes against evil, we are asked where we stand on that. Do we tolerate it, for an easy life? Do we give in, and behave in ways more in keeping with Satan than with Christ? Do we face our own demons and, with God’s grace, expel them from our lives? Are we prepared to hear a new teaching, to be shaken by the radicalism of Jesus’ message, or do we prefer to go through the motions of habit and conformity? How can we take on the mantle of being other Christs in our world? To speak, act and live with Christ’s authority is a vocation that calls us constantly to grow closer to him, day after day. We have the means to do that through prayer; through daily attention to scripture reading, study and meditation; through the sacraments, and through the constant practice of the virtues. Challenging authority in this world is something that we all may be called to do from time to time. But we are also called to recognize the ultimate authority of God, and to reflect on how that challenges us in our everyday lives. In your charity, pray for the sick and the lonely—visit them if you can. Also, please remember to pray for all who have wandered from the faith, and all who have died. May God always be pleased with us! Monsignor Michael 2011 Bishop’s Annual Appeal In Faith, With Hope Our goal is to have 100% participation in the 2011 Bishop's Annual Appeal. Please call to register at 908-725-1008. Sponsors & Godparents If you are 18 years or older, you must register as an adult and be Confirmed in the Catholic Church. If you are married, your marriage must be recognized by the Church. This is especially important if you wish to be a Sponsor for Confirmation or Godparent. It takes 6 months of attending Mass to be eligible for both of these privileges. Marriages The common policy of marriage requires that arrangements be made at least One Year before the date of marriage and before any social plans are made. Either the bride or groom must be a registered parishioner. Weddings may be scheduled for Friday afternoon, Saturday morning or afternoon, or Sunday afternoon ceremony only. Wedding Masses are not celebrated on Sunday’s. PRAY FOR THE SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE According to Church teaching, marriage between a man and a woman-in a manner unlike any other relationship—makes a unique and irreplaceable contribution to the common good of society, especially through the procreation and education of children. The union of husband and wife becomes, over a lifetime, a great good for themselves, their family, communities, and society. In short, marriage is a gift to be cherished and protected. No religion, government, or individual has the right or authority to alter the basic meaning and structure of marriage that has existed ever since God created the first man and woman. Civil laws make a just and necessary distinction when they recognize the unique role the institution of marriage has in society, rather than reducing this institution to nothing more than one of many alternative kinds of voluntary relationships. The sacrament of marriage is a commitment that calls forth the grace of God. As members of the human family, let us continually pray for all of our married couples and for the strengthening and protection of marriage. Catholic Schools Week 2012 Date: January 29 - February 5, 2012 Theme: Catholic Schools - Faith · Academics · Service Explanation of Theme: The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2012 logo is "Catholic Schools: Faith · Academics · Service." The annual observance starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2012 is January 29th to February 5th. Schools typically celebrate Catholic Schools Week with Masses, open houses and activities for students, families, parishioners and the community at large. The Catholic Schools Week 2012 logo is a rectangle, with the words Catholic Schools in red across the bottom of the rectangle. The "t" in Catholic is a purple cross and from the right top corner of the T/cross is an undulating green banner with words in white lettering that proclaims: Faith · Academics · Service. The theme focuses on three priorities that Catholic Schools establish that make them stand out from other educational institutions. Children are taught Faith - not just the basics of Christianity, but how to have a relationship with God. Academics, which in Catholic schools are held to very high standards, help each child reach his or her potential. Service, the giving of one's time and effort to help others, is taught both as an expression of faith and good citizenship. World Marriage Day Celebration Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012 ~ ‚Love One Another‛ World Marriage Day, which is held each year on the second Sunday in February, honors the lifelong commitment of husband and wife. The commandment given to us by Jesus in John 15:12 is to love one another. Loving one another as husband and wife is a daily decision, simple but challenging. It is an ongoing process of learning about each other and how to accommodate differences so that both spouses can feel satisfied and grow in love for each other. For helpful insights and suggestions on how to love one another more fully log on to the Catholic Bishops (USCCB) marriage resource website: www.foryourmarriage.org. Be prepared to find videos along with interesting articles for couples in every stage of marriage including the challenges facing couples today: unemployment, parenting, balancing work and family, care giving, etc. JANUARY 29, 2012 Let Us Remember....
