Lent 2015 - Cathedral Parish
SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ February 15, 2015 MADISON’S DOWNTOWN CATHOLIC COMMUNITY Lent 2015 ABOUT OUR PARISH The Cathedral Parish of St. Raphael was formed on July 1, 2008 by the merger of three historic parishes located within a few blocks of the Capitol Square. 404 E. Main St. The buildings of two of those historic parishes – Holy Redeemer and St. Patrick – provide the current facilities for the Cathedral Parish. Mass is offered every day in both churches. The parish rectory is at the Holy Redeemer site, while the offices are at the St. Patrick location. Old St. Raphael Cathedral was destroyed by arson in 2005. Bishop Morlino has announced his intention to erect a new cathedral on the same site (at West Main and Fairchild). In the meantime, an outdoor Way of the Cross is located there. SAINT PATRICK HOLY REDEEMER 120 W. Johnson St. Sr. Sophie Marie This Tuesday 7:00 p.m. at St Patrick: Sister Sophie Marie tells her conversion story. Festive Mardi Gras refreshments served. Ash Wednesday after the 7:00 p.m. Mass at St. Patrick: Sister Sophie Marie gives a meditation — “Lent: A Time to Be Transformed by Love.” A Lenten supper will be served. www.isthmuscatholic.org Facebook.com/CathedralParishMadison CATHEDRAL PLACE W. Since Ash Wednesday is a penitential day, the obligation is fast and abstinence (according to the regulations printed on page 5). The Mass schedule for Ash Wednesday is as follows: 12:10 pm—St. Patrick 7:00 pm—St. Patrick 5:15 pm—Holy Redeemer 7:30 pm—Holy Redeemer (español) The Saint John’s Bible Pilgrimage February 28th Register this week for our parish pilgrimage to visit Illuminating the Word: The St. John’s Bible, an exhibit at the Chazen Art Museum on Saturday, February 28th. We will meet at Holy Redeemer at 10:45 am to walk to the museum. After the docent-led tour, we will return to Holy Redeemer for Liturgy of the Hours and a light meal. To register, please complete a pilgrimage form found in the kiosk and return it, with your fee, to the parish office before this Friday, February 20th. Do you feel like you are living the same day over and over again, without seeing beauty or the possibility for change? Monotony. It happens to everyone. Good news. You are being given the opportunity to wake up at every moment! Christ comes to us where we are, and He invites us to change and transform. You are invited to Encounter Culture this Saturday, February 21st, at 6 pm in the St Patrick Church hall, where we will observe this transformation in the film Groundhog Day. Join us for an eye opening discussion and some good wine! Did you miss the first session of Encounter Culture: New Year, New Way of Seeing? Or maybe you can’t get away from home on Saturday evenings… Don’t worry, you won’t miss out! Everything you need to do Encounter Culture at home is online! Check out the parish website 'Encounter Culture' page or contact Morgan at [email protected] with any questions. Rite of Sending Next Sunday Next Sunday, February 22nd, at the 9:00 am Mass at Holy Redeemer, the Cathedral Parish will publicly send those preparing to enter the Church here at Easter to the Rite of Election, which Bishop Morlino will celebrate in Waunakee later that day. The group includes four adults who have been baptized in another Christian denomination and are preparing for full reception into the Catholic Church. (While there are also two Catholics preparing for Confirmation in the RCIA process, this ceremony is specifically for people who are becoming Catholic at the Easter Vigil.) We will be praying for all our candidates at each of the Masses for the First Sunday of Lent, but all are especially invited to come to be with them for this Rite of Sending at the 9:00 Mass. Page 3 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 15, 2015 FROM SR. SOPHIE MARIE Dear Friends in Christ: My name is Sister Sophie Marie. I have been a contemplative (noncloistered) sister for coming up on ten years. I made my simple profession on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception in December of 2008. I belong to a community called Sisters of Mary Morning Star. Originally founded in Spain, the community now has fourteen convents and about 250 sisters worldwide. Currently, we have just one convent here in the States (Ghent, MN) but are hoping to soon have more! As you may already know, this year has been dedicated by Pope Francis as the year for consecrated life. It began last November 30th with a threefold intention: to spark a renewal in consecrated life, to thank those who put themselves entirely at the service of Christ and His Church, and lastly to extend an invitation to young Catholics to consider a religious vocation. In light of this third intention, I have been sent on mission to share the joy of friendship with Jesus. I am very excited to share this with your parish in a particular way with a couple of talks to help start off Lent with a greater desire for holiness. At the invitation of Msgr. Holmes, we will have a first talk this Tuesday (Mardi Gras, Feb. 17th) where I will develop my conversion story which you may have heard a few months back on the Drew Mariani show “Hairstylist to Sister.” You’ll see how I was an extremely typical “kickbox loving,” 23 year-old who put away the perm rods and color tubes in order to walk across the country as a pro-life advocate, finally deciding to give my life completely to Christ. In the second talk, on Ash Wednesday after the 7:00 pm Mass, I would like to share with you “secrets to happiness” I have discovered in what I call “starting Heaven early” aka contemplative, religious life. After ten years of a life, exclusively devoted to philosophical, theological, and mystical contemplation, I have been able to delve into the mystery of our human person and our ultimate purpose in a unique way. I am delighted to offer this parish my thoughts on evangelization through personal transformation. What a great way to start off Lent by reflecting on the true conversion God is calling each and every one of us to: allowing His grace to change our “hearts of stone” into hearts burning with the fire of the Holy Spirit, so we can, in turn, follow Christ setting the world ablaze with His love. Stations of the Cross At St. Patrick, the Stations of the Cross will be prayed following the 12:10 pm Mass each Wednesday (after Ash Wednesday) during Lent. At Holy Redeemer, Stations of the Cross will be prayed in English after the 5:15 pm Mass each Friday. On each Friday during Lent, a Mass will be celebrated at Holy Redeemer in Spanish at 7:00 pm, followed by Stations of the Cross in Spanish. Singing the Ordinary in Latin In November 2007, the bishops of the United States published a document entitled Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship. In #61, we read: “[C]are should be taken to foster the role of Latin in the Liturgy, particularly in liturgical song. Pastors should ensure ‘that the faithful may also be able to say or to sing together in Latin those parts of the Ordinary of the Mass which pertain to them.’” Here at the Cathedral Parish, we implement this directive by singing the Mass parts in Latin on the Sundays of Lent (and Advent). Programs with the Latin text and music (or with directions where to find longer pieces in the hymnal) are provided so that all are able to join in the chants of the Mass. Diocesan Annual Catholic Appeal 2015 Banns of Marriage The names of parishioners planning to marry are published three times prior to the ceremony. Anyone knowing of any impediment to the proposed marriage must make that known to the Rector. III. Adam Rieves & Rachel Witt The theme for the 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal — Living Our Mission of Charity — reminds us that each of us is touched by faith and charity. We ask that God grant us a renewed sense of responsibility for the work of our parish, our diocese and the Church throughout the world. We ask that His grace make us even more generous in supporting those needs. Each pledge to the Annual Catholic Appeal supports diocesan ministries, education and services today, and assures a strong future for the Diocese of Madison and the people that it serves. This year each of us is asked to consider making a pledge, payable over five months. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back to the Diocese. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response. Page 5 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 15, 2015 LENTEN REGULATIONS 1. Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all Fridays in Lent, and Good Friday. 2. In addition to abstaining from meat, Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday, until they celebrate their 59th birthday, are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Those who are bound to this regulation may eat only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. These minimal penitential practices should not be lightly excused. There are also a few liturgical restrictions during Lent. Funeral Masses may not be celebrated on the Sundays of Lent nor from Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday. When a marriage is celebrated during Lent, it is to reflect the penitential nature of the season. CATHEDRAL 20S&30S Theology on Tap—Thursday, February 26th Join us for our next TOT on Thursday, February 26th, with a special starting time of 8:00 pm. Msgr. Kevin Holmes will speak to us on Why Christianity? A Catholic Looks at Atheism. This is a first in a series of TOT talks in which we will dialogue with other religious traditions and perspectives. Each Why Christianity? talk will seek to identify similarities and differences between Catholicism and another religious perspective. The goal is to understand better and appreciate what others are saying while also growing in our appreciation of the richness of our faith in Jesus Christ. To receive email updates about Young Adult activities in our parish, please contact Marc Laudonio at 257-5000 or [email protected]. FAITH FORMATION No Main Event This Week: Come to Sister Sophie Marie’s Talk Instead! There will be no Main Event on Tuesday, February 17th, in lieu of the presentation by Sister Sophie Marie. All who might normally attend ‘The Main Event’ are invited to her talk. Please see Page 3 of this bulletin for more specific details. ‘The Main Event’ is an adult faith-formation gathering incorporating prayer, teaching, and discussion that is held weekly on Tuesday evenings from 6:30—8:30 pm at St. Patrick. Check the website for more details, including the full schedule and topics of each gathering. Catholicism 101—What is the Catholic Faith All About?
