MAKE Today and Tomorrow
Designing a Future-Proofed Maker Space
Are Maker Spaces a fad or the future of hands-on education?
We’ll discuss how we transformed two classrooms into cuttingedge Maker Spaces in a summer and without major remodeling or
expense. Learn principles for creating flexible, dynamic and evolving

Nine big ideas for envisioning a maker space that will
be relevant today and also stand the test of time
Keep it
nimble
Put it on
wheels
Make it
kid-friendly
Design a space that is flexible
and can adapt to be “just
right” for any learning need.
Furniture on wheels allows for
quick and easy transformation
of the space. The front of the
classroom is wherever it needs
to be… or nowhere at all!
Make spaces where
students will want to be
with a range of work areas
& seating options.
Give kids
ownership
Enlist student help in
envisioning, creating,
and adapting the space.
Make sure student work is
displayed prominently.
Plan for an
evolving
space
Think of your space as an everevolving prototype. Be ready to
address emergent needs (and
keep a budget to do so.
Make
materials
accessible
Easy access to materials
leads to efficient and
inspired making.
Build in
storage
Allocate ample space for
supplies and projects-inprocess. Well-planned storage
systems allow for more efficient
work time and clean-up.
Design with
safety in mind
Design a space with
safety in mind, including
equipment/tools, safety
gear, and classroom
routines.
Cultivate a
mindset
Encourage students,
faculty, and families to see
themselves as makers, and
making will begin to show up
everywhere – playgrounds,
classrooms, and beyond!
