Thanks to our High Priest and Prophet Bobby Caldwell for his work in organizing the Nobles at the I-Hops. We are #1 in raising the most money of all the Shrines that participated in the fund raiser. As promised the Divan has been present at every Mid-Winter and I want to thank each unit for your warm welcome and reception. We have several more Mid-Winters to attend and we are looking forward to being there. So far the Gun Club took three trophies and the Clowns brought home thirteen trophies from Tyler. The Legion of Honor won two throwaways at New Braunfels. On March 16th the Divan traveled to the Red River Shrine Club and conducted a short form for three new Nobles. The circus has come to town in Garland and Fair Park, lets give all the support we can to our Chief Rabban Morgan Robnett and make it a great time . I am looking forward to seeing the smiling faces of the children when they meet all of the clowns. The Spring Ceremonial will be April 14th honoring P.P. Jim Alford, let’s bring out all of our candidates and fill the ballroom up. This year we will also have a Parade of Units. Please encourage your Blue Lodge to attend the Blue Lodge Dinner night on April 12th and bring any Mason interested in becoming a Shriner. Yours in the faith, Roger Carney March Greetings From First Lady Julie! Dear Ladies, March arrived and of course that meant Mid-Winters for several Units. The Divan spread out into several groups and attended Mid-Winters from New Braunfels to Ft. Worth to Tyler. And several more are to take place well into the month of April. Congratulations to the winners! On March 11th, her Majesty Diane Wilson was installed as Queen of the Daughters of the Nile, Shalman Temple No. 90 in the ballroom at Hella. It was a very beautiful installation ceremony and was well attended. Thanks to all my fellow Nile members that participated in the ceremony and those who attended. I know she will continue to support the Shriners Hospital for Children and have a very successful year. Thank you Nobles and Ladies who participated at the IHOP fundraiser, it was very successful. Hella Shrine and Shriners Hospital for Children appreciate you giving up your time at the IHOP restaurants for such a great cause. The circus is in town in Garland and Fair Park. Lets get behind our Chief Rabban and make it a successful circus. Palmer The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas Plano Shrine Club The Plano Shrine Club had another great meeting on Tuesday evening, 2/21/12. We moved it up one week so as to not interfere with the Shrine I-HOP day. The meeting was chaired by our Pres., Ken Garner. We opened with a prayer from our Chaplain, Sam Tiner, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. This was followed by a great meal. After dinner we played 4 games of BINGO with cash prizes. We had our “above board” drawing this month and 4 had a chance to win – Sadly none won! THE POT GROWS FOR NEXT MONTH!! We followed this with Birthday announcements. Our sickness report was much better this month. Noble Lloyd Carpenter was able to attend and do his duties as ticket seller and running the “above board drawing”. He plans to go down to M. D. Anderson in Houston to be in a test program to fix his problems. Lady Shirley and Noble Jeff Jeffrey are still ill and home bound. Lady Barbara McGriff’s foot problems continue to improve. Pres. Ken Garner reviewed all the upcoming events at Hella and in the Masonic world here in North Texas. We signed up Nobles & Ladies to man the IHOP in Plano on the 28th and Noble Larry Kester announced the dates and preliminary meeting schedule for our participation in the Plano Ballon Festival in September. Buck Howard, Chairman of the Valley of Dallas, is a member of Hella and has worked closely with Hella Noble Grady Smith, Hella Shrine Membership Chairman and on the Valley Membership Committee as Chairman for the Scottish Rite Red Fez Membership Committee which is made up of Hella Shriners who are Scottish Rite Masons. Both of these Amigoes believe it is in the best interest of both the Shrine and Scottish Rite to work together to achieve membership growth. Page 8 The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas Thank You! On February 28, 2012 IHOP celebrated National Pancake Day, and Hella Shrine was there to help! Since it's beginning in 2006 IHOP has been able to use National Pancake day to donate over $10 million to charities like the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Customers enjoy a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes, and they are asked to consider donating. In Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana, those proceeds benefit the Shriners Hospitals for Children. And even though our country is still in the midst of troubled economic conditions, Americans came out in droves for the pancakes and donated big. Here's how the numbers broke down. For the Dallas area market, we had over 170 Shriners AND Masons volunteer their time to help with the cause. And because of such a big showing of fezzes, clowns and aprons in the stores, we brought in a total of $98,121, an INCREASE of over 13% from last year. The only other city to come close to what Hella did brought in around $78,000. The top four stores were all from Texas, which should make us all doubly proud. We never could have done so well without the dedication and support of so many Nobles and Masons. In addition to the Units and Clubs at Hella committing to cover specific stores to make sure there was a Noble present for most of the day, Lodges in our jurisdiction stepped up as well. The Ladies of Hella were there to open doors and hold donation buckets, as well. We also heard several stories of IHOP managers and wait staff going out of their way to make this such a great success. We will be recognizing the top IHOP store salespeople at our April meeting. Thanks go out to the Hospital Committee who has been working since October of 2011 to make this a success.. Members were Ken Scales (Hospital Chairman), Jeff Forrester (OG), Robert Davidson (Temple Website), Jerry Patterson (Clown Director), Guido Costa, Mike Hall (Director), Buster Barrier (Chief of the 101's). Also a big shout to PP, Ill Sir, John Rodriguez and Rick Hall for escorting one of our great kids to different IHOP stores in our area during that day. Special thanks to PP, Ill Sir, Jim Alford for bringing Mt. Pleasant back into the fold. And finally a big thank you to our Ill Sir, Roger Carney for his support by giving us the flexibility to do things a little differently this year. This fundraiser generates over $500,000 each year for our Hospitals. Every bit of that is for the children, and it was clear that this thought was in the minds of many Nobles and friends that day. We heard great success stories of Shriner children from guests of the IHOP stores, and it really helped bring home the importance of what we do. Congratulations to all who participated for making such a significant contribution to our noble cause! For A Job Well Done, I Thank You! The Flying Fezzes Unit is aflight in 2012. The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas Page 11 The $100 Million-Dollar Club Since 1922, Shriners Hospitals for Children® has provided lifesaving and life-changing medical care to children. The money to provide these needed services comes from many sources: community donations; fundraising events; investment income; and support from the Shriners International fraternity. As health care costs increase, Shriners Hospitals for Children® needs your help, more than ever, to continue to provide specialized care, offer medical education and conduct more research. Too many people believe that if they cannot donate or leave a large sum or money, their gift will not count. Every contribution helps. In order to encourage donors to contribute to Shriners Hospitals for Children®, the $100 Million-Dollar Club was established in 1972. The club is named for its goal of adding $100 million to the endowment fund through gifts or bequests of $100 or more. How to join There are three ways to become a member of the $100 Million-Dollar Club: (1) By contributing $100 or more to Shriners Hospitals for Children®; (2) By having your will include a bequest of $100 or more to Shriners Hospitals for Children®; or (3) By adding a provision to an existing will leaving $100 or more to Shriners Hospitals for Children®. Pictured below are the nobles who received their Fez Pins and a Certificate at the March Stated Meeting. – Ken Flournoy Page 12 The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas Yellow Rose of Hella off to a Good Start This year we have introduced to the Nobility a new program to supplement our participation in the $100 Million-Dollar Club. Our goal is that Hella will be #1 in Shrinedom in contributions to the Shrine Hospitals for Children. This program is called the YELLOW ROSE of HELLA. When a Noble contributes $100 or more to the Hospital Fund in the name of a lady, the lady will receive a $100 Million-Dollar Club Certificate and it will be presented to her prior to the Hella Temple Monthly Stated Meeting during dinner. She will also be given a rose to commemorate her becoming a YELLOW ROSE of HELLA. The donation can be designated on behalf of your wife, mother, sister, daughter, granddaughter, grandmother, aunt or significant other or in memoriam, This is a wonderful way for Shriners to say thanks to a lady, or ladies, in their life and in doing so helping the Shrine Hospitals. Each lady will also receive a limited edition, commemorative pin in the form of a yellow rose for her to wear at Shrine functions. There are only 250 of these pins and once they are given out the mold for the pin will be destroyed and only this limited number of pins will be in existence. So Shriners, please donate to the hospitals early so that you will not miss the chance to honor a lady, or ladies, in your life with a membership in the YELLOW ROSE of HELLA Also, for a limited time, we are offering a two for one contribution plan. For a $150 immediate donation, or a $150 bequest in your will, both the Noble and his lady will each receive $100 million Club Certificates plus a Fezz pin and yellow rose pin. Using the form included in this issue, indicate your immediate donation or bequest, and mail your check for the $100 Million-Dollar Club to: Hella Shrine Temple, 2121 Rowlett Rd., Garland, TX, 75043. These Ladies were honored at the March Stated Meeting as being the second group to receive the YELLOW ROSE of HELLA Certificate, a Yellow Rose and the Commemorative Pin. Peters Colony Shrine Club Meeting of March 2012: Peters Colony Shrine Club’s March meeting called to order by President, Dean Melton. Prayer was by Noble Jim Brittain, Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of United States led by President, Dean Melton. Noble Jim Brittain, representative of Hella Shrine swore into office Noble Douglas Strom as Vice President of Peters Colony. Delicious meal of Chicken Fried Steak and all the trimmings, cookies, ice cream and all the coffee and tea you could drink was served. President Melton discussed Hella Shrine Circus and the need for volunteers to make this effort a success. “If you have time please help” was his request. This is our big money raiser for the operation of Hella. VP Douglas Strom held our monthly 50/50 drawing and he won it hands down! While he was at it, he received help in drawing the winning Door Prize which went to Lady Nancy Johnson, wife of Noble Frank Johnson. Closing prayer was by Noble & Past President, Jim Brittain. Dismissed with thought of helping with Hella Shrine Circus to be a success. Fraternally, Glenn Luster, Sec./Tres. Hope to see you there. For more information call Jo Dudley, P.P., at 972.271.0259 The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas A Message from the Imperial Potentate Greetings my fellow Nobles, It’s been another fun and busy month! I would like to start this message by reminding you about the Imperial Potentate’s trip to Alaska from May 28 - June 11. Patty and I had a fantastic time with 60 Nobles and their Ladies during the European Holiday Riverboat Cruise in November, and this trip promises to be just as spectacular. The exciting itinerary features a six-night inland excursion, a train ride from Denali National Park to Anchorage and a seven-night luxury cruise to Vancouver. For more information, contact Cheryl Sheehan with Vantage Deluxe World Travel at 800-994-6321, ext. 714, or view a presentation at www.brainshark.com/vantagetravel/imperial_shrine_alaska. Speaking of colder climates, I had the pleasure of attending the Midwest Shrine Association business meeting in Grand Forks, N.D. More than 230 Nobles attended and the Kem Shriners could not have been better hosts. While in the area, I was given a behind-the-scenes tour of the hockey arena at the University of North Dakota. A little fun fact you might enjoy is that Imperial Sir Dale Stauss is a former goalie for the Fighting Sioux. There has been talk he might make a comeback, but I think he is enjoying retirement too much. My next stop was a visit to the newly rebuilt Shriners Hospitals for Children® —Honolulu. I met with the hospital’s wonderful staff and we discussed the idea that an efficient way to transport more patients from the Pacific Rim would be to use a portion of the 3.3 million air miles our health care system received from earning the most fan votes in the United Airlines 10 Million Mile Charity Miles Giveaway in December. Later in the month, I also visited Shriners Hospitals for Children — Lexington and was impressed by the knowledge, attentiveness and care of the hospital staff. In fact, I am always impressed by the staff at every hospital I visit! We had a great turnout at the Pacific Northwest Shrine Association in Medford, Ore. Representatives from Shriners Hospitals for Children — Portland, Spokane and Salt Lake City each gave terrific presentations and I would like to thank the Hillah Shriners for hosting the event. As it does every year, Shriners International sponsored the Frank S. Land Memorial Breakfast at the Conference of Grand Masters, which was held in Atlanta. The event was a great opportunity for me to renew relationships with many Grand Lodge officers. This year, the breakfast commemorated the 100th anniversary of Frank S. Land joining the Masons. For those who may not know, Frank S. Land was both the founder of DeMolay International and Past Imperial Potentate of Shriners International. In addition, he was a personal friend of Noble Harry S. Truman and was a trustee for Truman’s Presidential Library and Museum. I also traveled to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Tampa for the Daughters of the Nile $3 Million plaque presentation ceremony. In attendance were Supreme Queen Laura Richardson, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Doug Maxwell and Imperial Treasurer Gene Bracewell. Throughout their history, the Daughters of the Nile have raised many millions of dollars for our health care system. I cannot thank the organization enough for all their dedication and support. At the Shrine Recorders Association Seminar in San Diego, Calif., the Al Bahr Shriners gave a presentation previewing the new clinic in Tijuana. Having a physical clinic location in that part of Mexico would be more cost effective and allow us to treat more patients. I would also like to thank the Al Bahr Shriners for their generous donation to Patty’s fundraising program “Stepping Forward Toward a Brighter Future.” Burn awareness is a subject that is extremely personal and important to her; she greatly appreciates all of your support. Please visit http://support.shrinershospitals.org/site/PageNavigator/FirstLady.html to find out more about Patty’s program. While in San Diego, I also had the pleasure of going on a gorgeous scenic motorcycle ride from Imperial Beach to Ocean Beach with two other Nobles. Harley-Davidson is a big supporter of the fraternity and was gracious enough to loan me a bike. I know I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again… The life of a Shriner sure is fun! “Remember Why You Became a Shriner!” Yours in the Faith, Michael G. Severe, Imperial Potentate, Chairman of the Board of Directors The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas Page 15 13 Wins for Hella Clowns! Hella Clowns were a big part of Texas Shrine Clown Association Mid-Winter with a large turnout of Clowns and Ladies. Texas Shrine Clown Association Midwinter had them all. Hella Clowns were well represented in all categories of competitions. They brought home 13 awards from the competitions. John “Spinner” Krodel was elected Secretary/ Treasurer and Chuck “Cheetoe” Hudson was elected Second Vice President of the Texas Shrine Clown Association. Jim “Hot Rod” Wells was honored as the unsung hero for all the help he has given to the novice clowns and the clown unit this last year. The Association collected $5,067.00 for the Red Sneaker fund which goes to the Shrine hospitals for burn research. The most hotly contested auction was the red clown wig which eventually went to John “Spinner” Krodel. Yours in Faith, Nick Stoisolovich, Chairman Sons of the Desert The Sons of the Desert Unit was formed for all new Nobles at the request of Potentate Roger Carney. This Unit is free to all new Nobles and their Ladies. It is to inform the new Nobles and their Ladies on the working parts of the Temple. Our Ladies are very important to the Shrine Family. Unlike many other Masonic appendages, the Shrine is focused on family. We will have representatives from different units to inform the new Nobles about their units and how they can join. We will have a monthly meeting and dinner, usually the second Friday night. However, there will be conflicts. The April meeting will be April 13, 2012 at 6:30 pm. We have had three very successful meetings to date and look forward to many more. Please join us if you are a new Noble and bring your Lady. For more information contact: John Krodel at [email protected] or 214-762-6077 Directors Staff News The Directors Staff, A La Carts, Clowns, Rolling Bar Stools and Flying Fez units participated in the Saint Patrick's Day paraded on Greenville Ave. in Dallas, Tx on March 17th. It is the longest parade of the year. Hella Shrine was well represented by these groups. Everyone had a great time and the public cheered us as we passed by. This was great exposure for Hella Shrine as well as for being a Shriner. These next couple of months will be very busy for us. We have the Circus, which will be over by the time you get this article. We are rebuilding a parade trailer. We have our porch to upgrade. And we have a couple of projects our Illustrious Potentate Roger Carney is wanting us to take care of. April 12th we will have the Blue Lodge Dinner with some of us performing the Arch Ceremony. Then on the 14th we will have our Spring Ceremonial honoring Sir Jim Alford, Past Potentate. This year we will have a Parade of Units through the Temple. I hope all can participate in the event. Plus the Directors Staff will be hosting the 2nd Section. We need every unit to help show our incoming Nobles what we are all about. Fraternally Yours, Weldon Warren Hello Fellow Patrolmen We had a very successful TSPA Mid-Winter Meeting in Fort Worth. Hella was well represented with our Illustrious Potentate Roger Carney, Grady Smith, Ken Flournoy, George Secor, and myself in attendance. Thank you for your service. During the meeting, we confirmed that we would be fielding a drill team at the 2012 TSA Competition in Tyler, Texas . March was a very good month for the Patrol. We were honored guests of the Potentate at Hella’s March Stated Meeting. For those of you who came, thank you! With Mid-Winter concluded, it is time to get to business with defending our TSA First Place Trophies. Our Drill Master, Grady Smith, has sent a request to determine who will be able to drill at the TSA. We will be having our first drill meeting on April 15th at 3:30 pm at Hella in the Patrol Unit room. At that time we will sort out registration, uniform and practice issues. Please make every effort to attend. We need everyone in attendance and if you could, please bring a Shriner friend to check us out. Hella Arab Patrol Drill Master/Ceremonial Master Grady Smith and Captain Jim Freeland would like to welcome our three newest members and nobles, Brian Brown, Jeff Hershberger, and Chris Knox. Mark your calendars. May 26th will be the Ennis Parade. We have always made a grand appearance at this parade. It is always a fun day and a great way to start the Memorial Day Weekend! Take care and look forward to seeing you soon!
