Just a note from your......
Potentate and First Lady
Well, here we are, August is over already and more
than half the year has passed by, what a journey it has been.
Carol and I hope you have all had a wonderful summer.
Thanks to those that dressed up, or just came out,
and enjoyed playing and socializing, we had a great time
at The Old Timey Western Day Casino. Also I would like
to thank Ronny Hampton for the perfect meal; Brisket,
Sausage, Chicken and the best cobblers with ice-cream. You can’t get any better than that.
In August we were Entertained by the “The Time Train.” This group was so good we booked them
for our Christmas Party in December.
I hope you’re planning on attending the September Stated Meeting, we have a lot of business to
take care of. We’re voting on a new digital sign to replace the old sign we have now. We need to vote on
moving the January Stated Meeting to the second Thursday, January 12, 2017. This is due to the Grand
Lodge meeting starting the week of January 15.
You may have noticed the lighting in the Temple is brighter than usual thanks to Steve Conley and
the 101’s, Mike Hall and the Directors Staff and the Divan. We cleaned all the fixtures and replaced the
old light bulbs with LED bulbs. This may be the single one thing that will save the Temple in its utility
bills for years to come. I also would like to thank Darrell Hefley for providing 4 Extreme-Air hand dryers for the restrooms. As you can tell, we’re making a few upgrades and improvements. Roger Carney is
committed to the project and will carry on, if we’re not finished by the end of this year.
If you have not been to the Hella Shrine Temple in a while, we would love for you to come back
and see what you have been missing.
Finally, Carol and I would like to express our gratitude for the support you have given to us over
the past 4 years and look forward to the final months of our service term at Hella Temple. Never forget
that it is You that makes our Shrine Great and keeps us as top leaders in Texas, and the World.
Yours in the Faith,
Wayne and Carol Osborne

Nile News From Queen Anna Garey
August 2016 Camel Calf
Shalman Temple No. 90 is very fortunate to have the support of Hella,
their Divan, their Members and their Ladies. Because of this, we are able to
participate in so many events and spread the word on what “Daughters of
the Nile” is all about. We work very hard to grow our membership and to
educate our new members on our philanthropy. I’m proud to say that one of
our most recent acknowledgements happened at the D.O.N. Supreme Session in June. We were presented with a plaque from Imperial Sir Jerry Gantt
for our contributions of over $10,000 last year. We also received a Certificate for Membership. I
want to congratulate Junior Past Queen Carol Hefley for these achievements. Because of her hard
work and the dedication of our members, we continue to make a difference to the children.
In early August, officers of Shalman Temple No. 90 attended the instituting of a new Temple
(Dynasty Amenna No. 164) in Nashville, Tennessee. What a wonderful experience this was for
everyone in attendance. Noble Jerry Barrera donated on our behalf, a handmade gavel for the new
Temple. The energy and the excitement of things to come for this new Temple made this a once
in a lifetime celebration for all of us.
I had the privilege of visiting the Galveston Shrine Hospital for Children on August 21st with our
Clownettes Unit. These ladies always have the children in their hearts and it’s such a rewarding
experience to share their time at the hospitals.
We will have a Ceremonial on September 25th and will be welcoming new members into our
Temple. There will be a reception immediately following to honor our new Princesses and our
Supreme Appointees.
Nile love,
Queen Anna Garey

Director’s Staff
What time is it? I bet it is time for the annual DIRECTORS
STAFF FISH FRY, and of course, the Garland Labor Day
Parade on Monday, 5 September, 2016. First we do the parade, then we come on back to the big barn at the bottom of
the hill for the best catfish dinner in TEXAS. For just $10
per person, and $5 for children under 12, you get all the fish
you can eat, hush puppies, cold slaw, French fries, dessert
and a beverage. This is even the BEST DEAL IN TEXAS.
We start serving as soon as the parade is over. So come on
down for good fellowship and great catfish!
The Directors Staff, with Jerry Patterson’s expertise, painted
the front drive portico ceiling blue. This actually keeps birds
from nesting under the roof. We had a great crew get there
early to help with setting up and tearing down the scaffolding. Plus we have several more projects coming up. The
main hold up on some of the things we need to do is all
of the rentals we have been getting. We need the rentals so
keep them coming. We can do our part when it slows down.
Hella Barstools
The Barstools Unit meets with the
AlaKarts in the AlaKart room on
the Sunday following the Stated
Meeting at 2:00 pm. John Whaley
is the captain of the Barstools. His
cell number is 972-571-5820.
We mainly ride in parades and
compete in TSMPA OBSTACLE
COURSE competitions. Or anywhere we can have fun!
Of course the Great State Fair of Texas starts on 48 days
from when I am writing this article. Mark your calendars for
30 September 2016. All units are asked to participate in the
downtown Dallas Opening Day Parade. The Directors Staff,
with our band and truck, will participate in the nightly Starlight Parade. This year the world famous Budweiser Clydesdale hitch team is back at the fair. Plus a lot more surprises
as usual. The theme is Celebrating Texas Agriculture. Come
to the fair, eat a corny dog and watch the parade.
Come out and join either Unit!
Another special thank you to Joe Grubbs. He has taken over
repairing our little trailer. He has repaired the hitch stand,
and is working on replacing one cushion and getting a couple more recovered. Thank you Joe for what you do. Plus
he is helping Brother Harry Adams pull the trailer in our
parades. They both are doing an excellent job.
Below are the dates and places of the parades
that are known at this time. This schedule is
subject to change.
We have three new members to the Directors Staff. Please
welcome Butch Johns, Warren Allen and Travis McCain.
Travis came into Hella Shrine in our last short form. We
welcome all of you. We are always looking for those that
want to join a group that like to work and have fun!!

Ad sales for the circus program were 25% above last year,
primarily due to the addition of banners that you will see in
the arena. Ad sales provide the funding to print our circus
programs. We are also trying a new approach to selling our
programs based on the advice and participation of our circus
provider, George Carden. This year, the circus programs will
produce a significant net source of income.

Thank you for the the support of the bicycle give-away program that is part of the program sales strategy. We will be giving away four bicycles at each intermission along with some
other prizes. My objective was to get the money donated to
purchase the 32 bicycles, $100/bicycle. Units, clubs and individuals stepped forward and donated $3,400!
Noble financial support of the circus increased over previous years. More of you purchased your Noble tickets, made a
donation, or both. This is another important source of income
for our circus.
Well, enough words. I will present a complete report at our
appreciation dinner scheduled for Wednesday, September
28th. I’ll see you at the circus.

Frisco Shrine Club
August 2016
Greetings Nobles!
Greetings from the Friendly Nobles of Frisco!
The last few months have been busy for our little club!
In June our paperwork was approved and we became
an official club!
Illustrious Sir John Rodriguez, PP, attended our
June stated meeting and swore in our officers. In August we have begun creating a logo and making plans
to participate in future parades and other Shrine events.
We also decided we will continue to meet at the lodge
building in Frisco until we have enough members to
start renting private rooms at various local restaurants.
Our club meets on the first Wednesday of each
month at the Lebanon Lodge building on Main Street
in Frisco. Dinner is served at 6:30 pm with the meeting
afterwards. Our meetings are open to all Nobles of the
Shrine, no matter what Shrine Temple you hold membership. (If you wish to join, our dues are $20 a year).
We also welcome any other Master Mason in good
standing to attend as a guest.
Come on up to Collin County and become a
part of Shrine history!
Provost Guard
September
The Provost Guard has had a busy summer. We hosted Bullseye shoots for Dallas Lodge and Lewisville
Lodge at the Dallas Pistol Club, both events were a lot
of fun.
The Provost Guard will be working the Mad Dog
Moore Fishing Tournament September 9th & 10th and
we will be having the TSPGA Fall Invitational Bullseye shoot in Wichita Falls September 23rd & 24th.
Our August monthly meeting was a packed house, we
had a great turn out. The unit will be busy into the Fall with Motorcops for Kids in November. We will also be
drawing for the 2 seat pedal car in November at the Ceremonial. If you haven’t purchased tickets for the raffle,
please contact a Provost Guard member, all the proceeds benefit the Shreveport Shriner’s Hospital.
If you enjoy good fellowship and pistol shooting and are interested in joining the Provost Guard, please let one
of our members know or show up to one of our monthly meeting. We generally meet on the 3rd Sunday of the
month at El Fenix, 9090 Skillman Road, eat at 4 PM and meeting at 5 PM. We always have a good time at our
meetings and look forward to welcoming new members.

Dear Fellow Nobles,
Serving as Imperial Potentate is an honor, a privilege and a responsibility; I
want to thank you for entrusting me with this opportunity to lead and guide our
organizations. Each day, I will do the very best I can to strengthen and enhance
Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children®.
I also want to thank everyone for their months of hard work and endless efforts
to ensure that Imperial Session was everything it is meant to be. Director General
John Massey and his entire team did an outstanding job, as did the staff at home
office – from those in the public relations, donor development, fraternal and membership departments – to the
executive teams for both Shriners Hospitals and Shriners International. Actually, every department at home office
contributed to the success of Imperial Session in some way and while I cannot name each of you, I do want to
acknowledge your work and thank you. I also want to thank the tour guides at both home office and the Tampa
Shriners Hospital – you always do an outstanding job; we want to especially thank those who came in on the
weekend to accommodate our guests.
We have a truly great team working with us at home office – and throughout our organizations, including our
shrine centers, and we are confident that, working together, we will accomplish great things this Imperial Year.
Ethel and I also want to thank everyone for getting the First Lady’s
program, The Sky’s the Limit, off to such a great start.
We appreciate being able to travel and attend the many different
events and meetings, and the opportunity those provide for spending time with our nobles, and their families. It is such an inspiration and encouragement to learn about the work being done at
the local level. We want to thank everyone for their tremendous
hospitality and consideration. We are so amazed by – and grateful
for – the many ways we are looked after, everywhere we go.
As you know, Shriners International is a global organization, with
shrine centers and clubs in several countries, and hundreds of thousands of members around the world. While that is impressive, we
need to be reaching many more potential members. We need to be
sharing the story of our great fraternity, of what it means to us, of
why we joined, and of what we have to offer. This is the time to be seriously focused and to remember to share
your fraternal experience with your friends – actually, try to find a way to share your story with everyone you
meet. You just never know when the idea you plant will take root, grow and eventually lead to the creation of a
new noble.
Page 16
The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas
Personal communications are critically important, and can be tremendously effective in reaching potential new members. However, it is important that we consistently reach as many people as possible. The availability of many forms of electronic communication should make getting
the word out and sharing our messages to multiple, and large, audiences
easier. We encourage you, and your shrine centers, to use these resources
– including social media and YouTu be – to help get the word out. We
also need to promote our presence on television, and be sure people are
aware of upcoming programs that will feature Shriners International or
Shriners Hospitals for Children, as well as the airing of ads and PSAs.
The 30th annual Membership Seminar is scheduled for Oct. 13-15 in
Tampa, Florida. Please consider sending representation from your temple, whether it be Divan leadership or those on your membership team.
These seminars provide important information and opportunities to share ideas with each other that can make
a significant difference in the success of your membership recruitment, retention and restoration efforts. Please
also consider inviting representatives from your Grand Lodges to attend. Partnering with your Grand Lodge can
be mutually beneficial, as membership tactics can easily translate to Masonry and other fraternal organizations.
We can also raise awareness through our signature events. The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open is coming up – it will be held Oct.
31-Nov. 6 in Las Vegas. The week-long tournament features many additional events and experiences, and is fun for the whole family. We
want to thank the volunteers (who pay a fee to assist) for making that
extra effort; their hard work contributes a great deal to the success of
the tournament. Last year, more than 300 nobles (and family members)
representing approximately 35 shrine centers volunteered, and we want
to especially acknowledge their support and commitment. Among these volunteers were representatives from
nine shrine centers and members of the Galveston Shriners Hospital’s Board of Governors who worked the holes
throughout the tournament. In a creative way to both support the tournament and conduct business, the Galveston and Los Angeles hospitals’ Boards of Governors also held their meetings at the event. We are very proud of
our shrine centers and nobles for their outstanding support. We truly appreciate all of the volunteers who are so
important to the Open – and we look forward to seeing them again this year.
In addition to being an outstanding opportunity to share the story of our fraternity, the Open is also a wonderful
chance to showcase the amazing work of Shriners Hospitals for Children. Several patients will be present, including our National Patient Ambassadors and patient volunteers who act as standard bearers. They are a stunning
testament to our health care system, and to their own perseverance and strength of spirit.
I just want to make a quick mention of the East-West Shrine Game,
which will be held Jan. 21, 2017, in St. Petersburg, Florida. This event
is also an opportunity for world-wide exposure, as well as a time for
our nobles to share some great football and an amazing tailgate experience. Think about being in Florida in January.
Thank you for your continued support and for everything you do for
our two great organizations. I look forward to our working together,
and accomplishing great things.
Yours in the faith,
Chris L. Smith, Imperial Potentate

Concert Charities
Raises $1,007,000
in Three Years for
Shrine Hospitals
For Children
Despite miserable weather, and horrendous traffic just getting to Fair Park, once again Hella out performed every other venue on the Distressed/Breaking Benjamin Concert Tour to date. Sara and I had the
opportunity to help out the next night in Friendswood (Houston), and their weather Saturday evening
was a monsoon. They went into total lockdown because of lightening, people were told to stay in their
cars until the electrical show was over, and the concert was delayed. The rain continued throughout the
night, and the fans sat or stood on the soggy grass. Maybe I am making excuses for why we outsold our
brothers and sisters of Arabia in Houston, and India in Oklahoma City - comparably in a smaller venue by well over 200 cd’s … just saying. Thank you for your support for our children’s hospitals, you are the
best. This shouldn’t really be a contest because we all have one goal and there are numerous variables in
each situation, but hey, the people who comprise Hella are a close knit team who love each other and our
children. It shows in everything we do. Stay tuned. The concert charities have raised $1,007,000 in little
more than three years so far. God Bless and Thank You.
Danny
P.S. We had many new young faces helping us at this concert and they deserve recognition! Many were
our children and grandchildren. They did a spectacular job. Please thank them. Not being familiar with
these top tour heavy metal bands brought back memories of my parents’ acceptance of Elvis and The
Beatles. Look what these bands are doing for us. Again, just saying….
