What an inspiration knowing that our ladies support hand in hand our Nobles in their goal to support the children and our Hospitals. The laughs were many, the memories are precious, and don’t forget to get those hours to Pr. Badoura (Jennifer Lites). I would like to thank Pr. Royal, Dawn Sanders, for a beautiful and heart felt luncheon. Also, thank you to those of you who attended and to those who helped in making this a memorable occasion for me. The Clownettes were hilarious and all of you were beautiful. As always, when we gather as a group I can see the strength that is Shalman Temple No. 90. As our ladies are aware, we will officially break for the summer. However, I know that our calendars are full throughout that time and that there will be many events that will bring us together. I look forward to seeing you then and to upcoming events: 6/9 - 12/16 TSA 6/13/16 Supreme In Nile love, Queen Anna Garey Shalman No. 90 Hella Greeters SALUTATIONS AND FELICITATIONS from Hella’s Unit of first impressions. 2016 President Steve Eason welcomes and invites all Nobles with their Ladies to join the Greeters and become the first Nobles that visitors see before Hella Stated Meetings and special functions. All that is required is a friendly smile and the desire to become friends with everyone at Hella. If you’re interested, please contact us. On May 25 we held our first organizational meeting in the Frisco Masonic Temple. We were blessed to have in attendance Assistant Rabban Chuck “Cheetoe” Hudson and Illustrious Noble John Rodriguez, PP, to provide good counsel in the launch of our Shrine Club. After a delicious dinner of lasagna and garlic bread The members elected Noble Nat Rocha as our first President and Bob Foster as Vice President. We will be electing the remainder of our officers at a future date. As we are still in the organizational phase, we haven’t established a stated meeting schedule or a meeting place as of yet. We will keep you posted! We are confident with further planning and imagination, the Frisco Shrine Club can become a valuable asset to Hella Shrine! Come join us and become a part of the future of Shrinedom! Look for us at HellaShriners.org and click on our club link. Come join us for a good ole’ Hella of a good time!!!! 2016 Hella Shrine Circus Newsfront • All should have received your new blue Noble tickets. If you have not, contact me (469-600-2473) or Jerry Barrera (214-533-5659). I hope many of you take advantage of this opportunity to purchase discounted tickets for the performance of your choice, or you can make a contribution to the Circus Daddy fund. The $50 you send in goes a long way toward insuring that our circus meets it’s financial goals. Net income from our circus is the largest source of Temple income, and allows us to do all that we do during the year. • Each year, only 10% of the Hella Nobility purchase their Noble tickets or make a donation totaling approximately $15,000. My goal this year is to increase that to $50,000. To do so will require that 35-40% of our Temple membership purchase their Noble tickets or make a $50 contribution. Help us achieve this goal. Support your circus and your Temple. • Look for communication soon on internal promotion and how you can be part of this effort. Think what 2,700 Nobles, their ladies, family and friends can do, if they talk up and promote our circus at every opportunity (clubs, friends and neighbors, family, church, businesses, etc.). • Don’t forget about program ad and banner sales. This is a tremendous way for you to raise money for your unit, club or Blue Lodge (you get 40% back), and not an insignificant source of income for our circus. If you need help or questions about selling ads, contact SK Choudhury or Ed Cates. It would be great to see Units, Clubs and Blue Lodges with an ad in the circus program. What a great way to support your circus and Shrine. • We are on a mission to ring the arena with 3’ x 5’ banners, and units, clubs and individuals can buy a banner for $200 vs. the normal $350 cost. Contact Jerry or I if interested. We already have 13 units and clubs that have purchased banners. Don’t miss this additional opportunity to support your circus. • Finally, as part of our effort to sell our programs, we will be giving away four childrens bicycles during the intermission of each performance. My goal is to have units and individuals donate $100 to purchase all 32 bicycles. We already have 13 committed. We only need 19 more. Let me know if you would like to donate a bicycle. My commitment is to do the best job we can keeping you informed. I am sure there are many questions. Feel free to call me at 469-600-2473. Your questions and suggestions will help put on the best possible circus. Fraternally, Bob Moore, Chief Rabban and 2016 Circus Chairman The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas Page 9 Hella Provost Guard May 31, 2016 Hella Provost Guard will be competiting in the upcoming Texas Shrine Association Bullseye competition in Pasadena, Texas. We will be competing at a gun range in Baytown, Texas. The Hella Provost Guard unit donated $5,000.00 to the Hella Building fund at the April stated meeting. The Provost Guard was happy to make this donation which was voted on by the unit membership earlier in the month. Recently the Hella Provost Guard assisted in the Bucket Brigade at the corner of Ridge Road and I-30 in Rockwall. Donations were collected May 13 & 14th. It is always heartwarming to work the Bucket Brigade. The general public is kind and generous and always thanks the Shriners for their great work with the children at the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Donations from a handful of pennies to hundred dollar bills were contributed by the community. I would like to thank all of the Provost Guard members who participated in the fund raiser. Additionally, the Provost Guard has a 2 seat pedal car we are raffling off for the benefit of the Shreveport Shriners Hospital. If you want to purchase any tickets please contact a Provost Guard member. Annual Temple Dues Explained The Hella Temple dues for 2016 are now payable and will be “past due” on January 1, 2017. Annual dues are $100.00 and the money is divided up as follows: $65.00 goes to Hella Temple, $30.00 goes to Imperial Headquarters and $5.00 goes to the Hospitals. The $35.00 we send to Imperial is our CAPITAL CONTRIBUTION and this amount “must be paid” by Hella for each Shriner we keep on the books as a member of Hella Temple, even if the member does not pay his dues. This means that Hella has several options about the $65.00 we would keep towards Temple Operations and Expenses IF YOU DO NOT PAY YOUR DUES. If you do not pay your dues of $100.00, Hella loses their $65.00 share of the $100 and we can only keep you on the rolls as a Shriner IF WE PAY IMPERIAL THE $35.00 that you did not pay. That means we have to take $35.00 of the $65.00 another Noble pays as dues to pay your $35.00 to Imperial to keep you as a Shriner and you get absolutely nothing for the $35.00 we pay for you. You do not get a CURRENT Hella membership card unless you pay your total of $100.00. You cannot participate in Hella official functions unless you have a current Hella membership card. There are a couple of options Hella can exercise: DEMIT: If your 2016 dues are paid and you don’t intend to pay your 2017 dues before December 31, you can ask for a DEMIT in good standing. Hella will drop you from the Temple Rolls in good standing and issue you a Demit. Do not wait until December 31, 2016 to request a demit REMIT: Hella can Remit your dues. This means Hella or you must pay the $35.00 to Imperial and Hella can forgive you’re paying the $65.00 you owe the Temple, but you will not get a current membership card and you cannot attend official Temple functions. If you are unable to pay your dues, due to health reasons or financial difficulties, you MUST contact the Hella Recorder and work out an agreement of some kind with him concerning your dues. SUSPEND: Based on hardship, etc., Hella can only remit (pay) your dues of $65.00. You must pay the $35.00 which goes to Imperial. If you don’t intend to pay your dues, your name will be on a list in December for suspension. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL DECEMBER 31, 2016 TO PAY YOUR 2016 DUES. I sincerely hope this explanation of what your dues options are helps you understand how important it is for you to act now, before the stated meeting on December 15, 2016. Roger Carney, P.P., Recorder Page 10 The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas Imperial Potentate’s Message Dear Fellow Nobles, Although I’ve been a member of the Joint Boards and involved in leading our hospital system for many years, serving as President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees has given me an even more close-up view of the great medical care we have provided, and continue to provide, to children and families that choose Shriners Hospitals for their pediatric specialty care. We continue, and will continue, to provide this high-quality care regardless of the families’ ability to pay. As Shriners, we should be very proud of our philanthropy’s history of providing excellent, compassionate and generous care. As you know, we have encouraged our nobles to become more active in providing and sponsoring more screening clinics in order to identify more children who may need our help. This is one way we, as Shriners, can become more involved with our hospitals. Because of our increased advertising and marketing efforts, more people are aware of who we are and the services we offer. It should be easier to attract families to our screening clinics, if we promote them appropriately. It has been a busy time of year with several hospitals celebrating milestones. Galveston celebrated its 50th birthday, and attracted a lot of great media attention as a result. Honolulu dedicated the new family housing units. These new units will save the local temple thousands of dollars by eliminating the need to provide hotel accommodations for patients and families. Our Canada hospital celebrated a successful conclusion to their capital campaign, reaching their goal of raising $130 million for the construction of the new hospital. The Lexington hospital celebrated its 90th anniversary and is looking forward to moving to a brand new facility early next year. Many hospitals have been holding Hospital Days, inviting both Shriners and the public to come, visit and learn more about the local Shriners Hospital. These events are very popular important to the nobles, and can really help build interest in the philanthropy. The Twin Cities hospital held its first-ever gala the night before the Hospital Days event and raised close to $200,000 to help fund the new EOS radiology system for the hospital. The EOS system uses up to 89 percent less radiation than traditional X-rays, while generating high quality three-dimensional views of patients’ bone structures. The ability to obtain the images needed while reducing radiation exposure is especially important, as many of our patients will require many X-rays over the course of their care. We would like to thank all the hospital staff who are in the process of raising funds to purchase this important medical equipment. We continue to look at new business plans that may introduce additional services for our patients, including fracture care, enhanced rehabilitation programs and sports medicine. The goal is to introduce more families to Shriners Hospitals. We are also looking at affiliations with other health care organizations; that will also bring more patients to us. Revenue cycle continues to evolve and we will continue to develop it fully. The program did bring in 134 million in 2015, which certainly helped reduce the amount we had to take from our endowment to cover costs. Revenue cycle is very important, but it is not the total answer to our financial strength. We need to continue to use every possible avenue to attract new donors and increase giving. It has been a busy year for everyone and I once again want to thank all the staff of Shriners Hospitals for what you do. Without you, our mission to improve the lives of children would not be as successful as it is. I also want to thank the members of the boards of governors of our 22 hospitals. You contribute so much – your time, travel and expertise – to oversee the operations of our hospitals. Last, and certainly not least, I want to thank our nobles and families for everything you do to support our great philanthropy, Shriners Hospitals for Children. In closing, as we prepare to celebrate Memorial Day in the U.S., please take time to remember those who have gone before us – especially our veterans – who provided us with the opportunity to do the work we do. On the following two pages is a letter we recently received from a patient. While it is addressed to me, it is really meant for everyone, and I wanted to share it with you. We met for breakfast in Grapevine and were joined by Bro. Mitch Newstadt of the Moslah Motor Corp. We completed our journey to Texas Harley-Davidson where we had the pleasure to perform our drill for the audience and several members of Moslah including Potentate Ills. Sir Harold Benefield, and members of the Divan. The Motor Patrol represented Hella well and had a fun time doing so. Our team consisted of: Jerrod Neel, Kirk Johnson, Mike Sorensen and Freddy Cooper. Thank you to Moslah Shrine for inviting us to participate in this event and represent Shriners. It is a privilege to get to know the members of the Motor Patrol. I have been asking why they joined. Often you hear, “My interest in motorcycles and the desire to enjoy riding with my brothers.” However, if you dig a little deeper you will often find the seed was planted years before, a little boy watching a parade, a Shrine circus or attending a Shrine summer picnic. The child asks himself, “Who are these men having so much fun?” It is this seed that led many to seek out Masonry and the Shrine. Always remember, someone is watching you, the general public or maybe a little boy. Always leave them with a positive image! There is no requirement to own a motorcycle, only a desire to serve while having FUN!! Please contact any of our officers to join the Motor Patrol or get on our mailing list of events. Misty and I had a great time with our Motor Patrol family in Eureka Springs, Ark. this weekend. Riding the hills and seeing the sites. Over 800 miles on this trip and already talking about the next one. Our ride included the Beaver, Arkansas, suspension bridge, aka Little Golden Gate. W. W. Burch added that he rode ole Blue down to Nacogdoches to Milam Masonic Lodge #2 — in Nacogdoches, Texas. Milam Lodge #2 is the oldest continuous Masonic Lodge in Texas. 1837 was the year and Texas was still a Republic. There is a picture of a Holy Bible that was printed in 1834. Pieces of the Columbia Space Shuttle landed in the parking lot. Upcoming activities: • June 5th the Motor Patrol will be hosting the “Sons of the Desert” at 12:30 PM. We will be performing our TSA competition drill on the practice pad and lunch will be provided. All new Nobles are invited to join. Please RSVP Freddy Cooper by June 1st (903) 268-5246 • June 8th we will be heading to Houston, Texas, for TSA. • June 26th we have the Motor Patrol Family Day at the Johnson’s in beautiful Van Alstyne, Tx. Please make plans to join us for food, fun, fellowship… and bring your fishing pole. Quote of the month: The best alarm clock is sunshine on chrome! Page 14 The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas Page 15 North Texas Shrine Club Bucket Brigade Dearest Nobles I want to thank personally all the Nobles that came and helped me in this year’s Bucket Brigade. We had such a great time not only for Fellowship but to raise money for, in my opinion, one of the greatest charity that I know. Sometimes I wear my emotions on my sleeve and really appreciate all that y’all have done. I am establishing that every 4th Wednesday I am going to have a meeting at the North Rig Grill at 6:30 pm so we can get together and see where we can help next for the Shrine. I feel when you get deeply involved with something it changes you and the Awesomeness of being able to say we have made a difference and every cent counts. I want to thank Nick De Vicentes, Keith Bates, John Ramsey, Horace Groff, Joe W Walker, Carl Englutt, Jasen Davis and his wife (for bringing doughnuts), Larry Davis, Paul and Melinda Baugh, Robert, Steve, Ralph Vannoy, and all the other Nobles and Ladies that were there. Your help was greatly appreciated. I know we raised over $3000 and that is a tribute to all of your efforts. If any Noble has any questions or comments, let me know and I will try to accommodate you. April 28 thru 30th. Every day was filled with activity by all the Shrine RV clubs. The day before we officially started, about 60 Shriner’s went to the 11th Street Bar and cooked steaks on an open pit while a band played country music. Thursday was started with sign in and welcomes. The first game - horseshoes, Ronald Sands and his partner placed 2nd. That night we were treated to hamburgers and hot dogs. Friday started out with Washers, followed that afternoon with Turtles, Hella did not place in either event. That night we were served pulled pork sandwiches and chips. A DJ provided music the entire night. Saturday was busy with games and a lady’s luncheon. 42, Poker, and SkipBo were the order of the day. New Noble Joe Alsbrook took first place in Poker while Charmaine Mitchell took a second in SkipBo. That night fried fish and chicken were served. After dinner, the new officers for 2017 TSRVA were sworn in by our Past Potentate Jerry Norvell. Our president for 2017 is Hella Shriner Bob Walton and his Secretary/Treasurer is Hella Shriner Forest Murley. Following the installation, the DJ played dance music till the wee hours of the night. There were 44 rigs from across the state, Hella was the smallest group there with six rigs. We placed well in the games but would like to have seen a better turn out for Hella. Page 20 The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas Mary Richardson’s Story In the fall of 1935, Mary Richardson of Kountze, Texas, was a free-spirited 10-yearold who had the run of her house and could do as she pleased. By Thanksgiving of that year, the once lively Richardson had become immobile due to intense pain she felt throughout her body. That was the beginning of a years-long journey back to health that would lead her to Houston and Shriners Hospitals. Richardson recently recounted her experiences during a Shriners Hospitals for Children – Houston event celebrating the 91-year-old as the hospital’s oldest living patient. After being seen by her local doctor back in 1935, Richardson’s father took her to Beaumont, Texas, to be evaluated by a surgeon. While in Beaumont, Richardson was diagnosed with osteomyelitis, and during surgery, her doctors realized her pelvis was completely involved. “The doctors told my daddy there was not much else they could do for me and that he should take me home to be comfortable,” Richardson said. “Both of my parents were familiar with Shriners—my daddy was a Mason and my mother was an Eastern Star and they knew the orthopedic specialists in Houston would be able to help me.” Richardson’s parents let her stay at home in Kountze for Christmas and her birthday in January, and then they brought her to the Shriners Arabia Temple Crippled Children’s wing of the original downtown Methodist Hospital in Houston. “It was a culture shock for me when I first got to Shriners,” Richardson said. “I was the baby of the family and was very used to having my own room, and my parents were always right there when I needed them.” Upon arriving to the children’s ward, Richardson was put in a room with seven other girls being treated at the hospital, and her parents were sent home. Once she was settled, she was seen by orthopedic surgeon Joe B. Foster, M.D., who attributed her bone condition to a Staphylococcal infection. Over the course of four years at the hospital, Richardson developed what would be lifelong friendships with Foster and the nurses at Shriners. Through those years, Richardson attended such events as the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and Galveston travel outings, and participated in the annual Christmas party held by the Bluebird Ladies of the Methodist Hospital and Arabia Temple Shriners. She recalls, however, one Christmas that was very different from the others she had experienced while hospitalized. “My daddy had been calling Dr. Foster for several weeks to see if he could take me out for Christmas day, and Dr. Foster said he could if the weather allowed, because I had been suffering from pneumonia,” Richardson said. “Christmas morning came as a cold and rainy day, but my daddy convinced Dr. Foster to let me spend the day at home with my family.” When Richardson arrived back at the hospital, everything was gone. Following the Christmas party, the holly and greenery which had decorated the party area so beautifully ignited a fire that spread throughout the hospital. “I was heartbroken, because that was my home, all my books and stationery, everything that was important to me was gone,” Richardson said. “Dr. Foster was so thankful that he had agreed to let me go with my family that day, because there were not many people on duty, and the bedridden patients were placed out on the lawn so the staff could get as many patients out of the hospital as possible.” By December of 1939, Richardson realized she was actually healing for the first time in the four years she had been at the hospital. By springtime, she went to Dr. Foster, saying that she felt ready to go home. “I caught Dr. Foster one day and I said, ‘Don’t you think I can go home now?’ He was like a surrogate father to me, and we saw each other every day. He agreed that it was time for me to go home,” Richardson said. After four and a half years in Houston, Richardson returned home to Kountze as a 14-year-old beginning high school. Her transition back to life outside of the hospital was much easier than she had anticipated. “I don’t remember how I managed to get around carrying my books walking about with two crutches, but I figured it out and did it,” Richardson said. “My friends were very accepting of me, and I was just part of the group the same way I had been before I left.” Richardson went on to study at Sam Houston State University where she met her husband. They went on to have two children, and they returned to Kountze to raise them and to take care of her parents who had taken care of her. Today, at 90 years old, Richardson is Shriners’ oldest living patient, but that does not mean she has slowed down. She continues working and volunteering for several charities, including her work with Shriners Hospitals. “Eighty years ago, when I was sent home because there was nothing more the doctors could do for me in Beaumont, the Shriners organization saved me,” Richardson said. “I don’t think that people realize today that is still happening to children. I think that donating to Shriners is the best money you can spend because it helps so many children who would not be able to see a doctor otherwise.” The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas Page 21 Looking Back at the Ennis Polks Fest Parade Page 22 The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas Page 23 LAS VEGAS TRIP AUGUST 23-26, 2016 (TUESDAY- FRIDAY) CAROL AND I ARE PLANNING A TRIP TO LAS VEGAS THIS SUMMER, STAYING AT THE “EXCALIBUR HOTEL” WITH AIRFARE THE PRICE ROUND TRIP IS $661.00 FOR TWO PEOPLE.
