Just a note from your......
Potentate and First Lady
Well the month of February is over and what a month it was.
First, we attended Ben Hur’s Nobility Ball in Austin, Texas,
then attended the Karem Potentate’s Ball in Waco, Texas. We
had a Super Bowl Party hosted by the Famous Hella 101’s.
Then came the Hella Potentate’s Ball. It was a dream come
true. Ben and Diane Wilson, along with their decorating committee, put together the most beautiful ball room. Vicki Barrier and the decorating team transformed the Terrace
Room into an amazing garden scene. The Theme of the Ball was A Gala Time in Italy with a bridge over running
water and stars sparking overhead separating the two rooms. We had a Gondola driven by a gondolier where a
couple could have their picture taken against the backdrop of Venice cruising down the canals. The best of all
was the stage; it was decorated with white stones columns, with a backdrop of Italy leading down to the dance
floor. This is where Carol and I danced along with our special guest Keylee Latham, a 13 year old burn patient
from Galveston; she was joined by a patient from the Houston Hospital, Caden White. What a night to remember.
The next event was the Chili Cook-off. This event was hosted by our “Do It All” Director’s Staff, and the question
most asked that day was, does anyone have any Tums. If that day wasn’t enough, our Divan when to Ft. Worth
that evening to attend the Moslah Potentate’s Ball. Boy, this has been a busy month. Then came a request from
the City of Rockwall. We have been invited to the City Hall to receive a proclamation from the Mayor declaring
March 8, IHOP Pancake Day. Will this month ever end? One more event, this one in Galveston, Texas, where we
attended the T.S.M.P.A Mid-Winter. Our Motor Patrol, along with everyone attending, had a great time.
Finally, Carol and I would like to say thank you to everyone that gave us this opportunity to serve you this year.
We have a great team of Divan members this year, you should be proud of them. I know I am.
Remember, the only way we can grow in the future is by sponsoring a new Noble.
Fraternally Yours
Wayne and Carol Osborne

Shriners Kids
At Shriners Hospitals for Children,
our mission is simple: deliver lifechanging medical care to children
who need it most – whether their
families can afford it or not.
For over 90 years we’ve specialized
in helping children affected by
orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal
cord injuries, and cleft lip and
palate. And while doctors and
nurses dedicate their lives to
helping our patients, your
love is what makes it all
possible.
The support of our donors
and partners has helped
the Shriners network of 22
locations care for over one
million children since opening
in 1922. Change the life of
a child. Make a donation
to Shriners Hospitals for
Children and send your love
to the rescue today.

Membership – A Commitment
As you all know our membership has fallen to a level that makes it difficult to succeed as the number one Temple
in Texas. We need everyone’s help in recruiting new Nobles. We also need help in keeping Nobles who are not
active or have lost the drive to be a member. These people are very important to all of us. The Black Camel does
enough to our loss.
We started a new way of making Shriners last year by having the short form initiation every month to six weeks to
better facilitate the new Noble. This is done in the evening, usually on a Wednesday, and only takes approximately
two hours. Dinner is served and a program for the ladies takes place as the new Nobles take their obligation. After,
we all join back together for discussions and videos are shown. The hospitals, our children and philanthropy are
our main topics. The new Nobles are also encouraged to attend the Fall Ceremonial.
As you can see, a great effort is made to bring in new Nobles.
But, we need your help. When you visit your blue lodge, try to show others how good it is to be a Shriner. Remind
them it is a family oriented endeavor.

Hella Clowns
Hella Greeters
After a very busy 2015, the clowns are never too far
from the action at Hella. Our members can be found in
most of the other Units at Hella assisting in any manner needed. Of course we are still clowns at heart, and
that can make for some very interesting situations. Hey,
why do anything if you can not have fun at it. Here
are some upcoming activities where you might spot a
clown or two. You might have to look closely, afterall,
we tend to be in disguise.
SALUTATIONS AND FELICITATIONS from Hella’s
Unit of first impressions. 2016 President Steve Eason
welcomes and invites all Nobles with their Ladies to
join the Greeters and become the first Nobles that visitors see before Hella Stated Meetings and special functions. If you’re looking for a Hella Unit with minimum
time commitment, this is it!! No drilling, no cooking
and no musical instrument needed. All that is required
is a friendly smile and the desire to become friends
with everyone at Hella. If you’re interested, please contact us. The “Silent Messenger” statue that stands at the
front of Hella Center for all to see was the inspiration
of Greeter Elmer Ackerman. Come and be a part of it!

Grand Lodge Special Session
Grand Master Wendell Miller has called a special session of Grand Lodge
to be held on Saturday May 14, 2016 at 10:00 AM at the Memorial Grand
Lodge Building in Waco. This special session is to address the problem of
hotel room availability on January 12, 2017.
Due to a convention that has been held on the second weekend of January for about 10 years that brings in many thousands of visitors to the city
of Waco which has every room within miles of Waco booked already, this
special session has been called for the sole purpose of a proposal to change
the date of Grand Lodge in 2017 from the second weekend in January to the
third weekend in January.
Per Grand Lodge Law, a special session can only be called for ONE specific
purpose.

Hella 101’s
Ahhhh, I remember it as if it were just yesterday. The year was 1980. The land Hella Temple now occupies was overgrown with brush, briars, bushes, weeds and trees. There was a lot of work to be done
before any construction on the Temple could begin. Calls went out for volunteers and the members of
Hella answered in kind. The land was cleared and the brush burned. Work for the volunteers did not stop
there. Ditches needed digging, pipes needed to be laid, wire needed to be pulled, and anything else that
didn’t require a license. Illustrious Sir Stan Ballard commented that there must be a hundred and one
things that need to be done and from this, a unit called 101’s was formed. After the construction of the
Temple building, and following the tenets of Masonry, thoughts then focused on refreshment. Hence the
101’s evolved into a ‘food and beverage service’ unit. Today we are called upon to support the Hella
kitchen and events staff. Primarily this involves providing our Nobles with food and drink as directed by
the Potentate and staff members for established functions and celebrations. We also provide this service
to the public in general who rent the facilities at Hella Center for private events. No special talents are
needed to become a 101. If you breathe and like to have a good time, you qualify. You do not need to buy
a horse, motorcycle, go-kart or potato peeler. Be advised we do not practice our craft.
Time to mention some of the specific functions and events that require 101 expertise. The Shrine Circus
is a major fund raiser for Hella. The 101’s mobilize to provide Hella Nobles and workers with refreshment before and after all Circus performances (a 3 to 4 day event). We will also provide support during
the New Year’s Eve Party, Potentate’s Ball, and Children’s Christmas Party. The 101’s are not all work
and no play. The 101 Jalapeno Appreciation and Preparation Society in June is one example. Each year
this gets bigger and better and we look forward to helping the Hella Center Building Fund with proceeds
from this event. The 101’s-sponsored Super Bowl Party is also a big hit featuring good food, adult beverages, games and, of course, big screen Football. These are just a few examples of events that are open
to the public and are sponsored by, and fun for, the 101’s. There are Unit parties during the year as well;
some for recognition for a job well done, and some just for fun. One little detail…. the 101’s Unit is affordable, with current dues at 12 bucks annually. Come out and be part of the 101 Association.

CarWrap City Benefits Hella Temple
Nobles, CarWrap City recently wrapped our new hospital van. The company
is interested in working with Hella Shriners. They have offered Hella Shrine a
10% commission on any completed wrap sale when we refer someone to them.
The interested person must mention Hella Shrine in order for us to receive the
commission.
This is a good fundraiser that benefits the Temple.

IHOP DAY is March 8th this year. Once again IHOP is giving a short stack of pancakes for free from 7am to 7pm.
We ask that the patrons give a donation to our Shrine Hospitals. Hella Shrine has 34 stores to cover. Please get
with your unit heads to find out which stores and at what times your help is needed to meet and greet the public.
Nobles, your ladies are invited to help with this event. Please wear your unit shirt and your fez to the store. IHOP
also gives a portion of their receipts for this day to our Hospital fund. Our largest fund raiser needs your help to
make this a success.
April 16th is the annual Rough Riders Game. For just $25.00 you get into the game plus a souvenir, a program
and all the Hot Dogs, Brats, chips, peanuts and Dr. Pepper products you can handle. Plus a portion of your money
goes to our Shrine Hospitals. For an added bonus, we will have a tail gate party before the game with great door
prizes. We have great seats, we get to park close and we have fun for the whole family.
We are looking for more volunteers to join our Hospital Committee. We help with all the fundraisers for our hospitals. Please contact Mike Hall or Bob Mantle if you are interested in joining this committee.
Fraternally,
Mike Hall

Minutes for Peters Colony Shrine Club – February 8, 2016
The members, ladies and visitors of Peter’s Colony Shrine Club gathered at 6:30 pm, socialized, visited
and ate. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm.
Prayer was said by Noble John Hannel and the Pledge to the American flag was recited. The Peters Colony Shrine Club met at Tierney’s in Lewisville. Noble Luster went over the Treasurer’s report. There is currently
$2,020.51 in the account and there are currently 5 members who have not paid their dues and will be contacted
before the next meeting.
The fundraiser for the Shrine Hospital for Children was discussed. Our small club usually has 3 IHOP’s
to cover. It was discussed to cover 2 IHOP’s instead. Noble Fisher will be checking with Hella to get more information on the upcoming event to be held on March 8th.
The correspondence received from the Shrine hospital was read. They thanked the PCSC for the donation of $100.00 given in name of Corey Higgins who was a great supporter of the Shrine.
Sickness and Distress was discussed next. Noble Barber stated that Noble Luster is having back pains
and regrets not being here tonight. Noble Scotts’ son is in the hospital with fluid on his lungs, pneumonia and
cancer. Please keep these members and their care givers in your prayers.
The 50/50 drawing was next and Noble Johnson won the kitty tonight. The door prize was won by Lady
Higgins.
Lady Higgins introduced our visitors and guest speakers tonight – her great granddaughter Kealeigh
and her friend Kaela and Kaela’s father, Kenneth Alford. Kenneth gave a brief description of the reason why
Kaela needed the Shrine Hospital when she was 18 months old and later. Kaela was so appreciative that, at the age
of 5, she decided that she wanted to give back to the hospital. She thought several days of what she could do and
then came to her parents and told them that she wanted to give stuffed animals to the children at the hospital. She
(with the help of her parents, family and friends) organized a stuffed animal drive and delivered all that she had
collected on Good Friday. For the past 8 years, her and her friends, church members and others have been gathering stuffed animals. Kaela has created an organization called Kaela Kares and plans on continuing with collecting
and donating animals to help the other children feel less scared. Please go to her FaceBook page (Kaela Kares)
for more information. The Nobles thanked Kaela and told her it was nice to meet her, as we don’t always see the
results of what we do as Shriners and it was refreshing to see firsthand the results. Noble Fisher also related his
experience with the Shrine Hospital for Children. His daughter was also a patient there. Noble Barber thanked
Lady Higgins for bringing us such a great speaker.
Birthdays and Anniversaries were celebrated and sickness and distress was discussed. Noble Brittain is
doing better and has home health care. Lady Kinsey is doing better after her surgery. Noble Herd has been diagnosed with cancer of the vocal cords and is in a lot of pain. Noble Luster’s son, Michael, has had a heart attack.
Prayers are asked for all and their caregivers.
It is with great sadness we have to report that Noble Jon Scott passed away on February 21,2016. Please keep his
family in your prayers.
The closing prayer was given by Noble Hannel. Meeting adjourned.

Hella Shrine Sons of the Desert
Salutations all new Nobles of Hella Shrine, this article is especially meant for you. If you are a
new Noble you are automatically a part of “The Sons of the Desert”. This is the avenue by which you will
be helped to become familiar with the workings of the Temple. Congratulations on this new life journey
you have recently embarked upon. The Shrine has many facets and its members have a primary objective,
“the promotion and support of The Shriner’s Hospitals for Children”.
The Hella Shrine is composed of many different Units (groups) which offer a variety of opportunities for you to get involved. All of these Units, and the government and operation of the Temple, is
guided by the elected Divan. These brethren are a kin to the principal officers of the Masonic Lodge.
There are many things to do, things to learn, people to meet, fundraisers to be involved with
and fun times to be had. You can expect to be contacted and invited to meet with the various units of the
Temple. Please make arrangements if at all possible to participate in these Unit visitations. As a member
of this Temple, you are its life blood. Your participation is desired and encouraged. If you have any questions please let me know, I will get you an answer. I will always have an open ear. I can be contacted at:

Introducing…
The Shriner Spotlight Award
To the unsung hero
To the one you can always depend on
To the one who does the work because the work needs to be done - not for any kind of recognition
This award is for you
Seeking Shriner Spotlight Award
Nominations - We Want to Hear from You
The newly initiated Shriner Spotlight Award will be
taking the place of the former Shriner of the Month
Award program. Similar to the Shriner of the Month
Award, the Shriner Spotlight Award honors members
who demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to both
their fraternity and philanthropy, Shriners Hospitals for
Children®. The nomination process is open to all of our
temples and hospitals, and the award will be presented
quarterly, instead of monthly. We want to honor the
everyday, hardworking, always-there-for-whatever-youneed-him-for Shriner in your temple or hospital. You know
who we mean; and we want to hear about him.
Each quarter, one outstanding noble will be chosen for
the Shriner Spotlight, with nominations taken throughout
the year. To honor these exceptional individuals, each
Shriner Spotlight Award recipient will be highlighted in
an issue of Shriner Magazine: Pride and Tradition and
the annual report, and featured on Shriners Village,
the Shriners International website and social media. In
addition, the honoree will receive a signed plaque from
the Imperial Potentate and a commemorative pin.
PLEASE INCLUDE your name, title and contact
information and the following information with
your nomination:
•
Who are you nominating? (Name and Temple)
•
Why? Please explain why this noble deserves to
be recognized.
Things to Consider:
•
How is this noble active within your temple and/
or hospital? (i.e., attends events, assists with
fundraisers, involves lady and family, engages in
increasing community awareness of fraternity,
volunteer work, specific examples of going above
and beyond)
•
Which element(s) of the Shriners International
mission statement does this noble most exemplify?
i. Being the premier fraternal organization for men
of good character
ii. Providing attractive, quality programs and
services for its members, their families and their
friends in a spirit of fun, fellowship and
social camaraderie
Personal displays of leadership, consistent participation
in temple activities and efforts, dedication to membership
initiatives, and/or contributions to the health care
system all aid in one’s consideration for the award.
In short, we want to honor the “unsung heroes” of
Shriners International.
iii. Fostering self-improvement through
leadership, education, the perpetuation of moral
values and community involvement
Placing a Nomination is Easy
To submit a nomination, please send us the following
information, along with a photo of the noble (wearing
a fez) and a signed photo consent form, via e-mail to
[email protected].
*Please note that nobles selected to receive the Shriner
Spotlight Award may not be a member of their
temple’s Divan, and must be actively involved in
promoting membership.
iv. Serving mankind through the resources of its
philanthropy, Shriners Hospitals for Children
•
Describe how this noble is a strong advocate of the
philanthropy (i.e., gives speeches to community,
supports national programs such as Burn Awareness,
participates in fundraising efforts, educates
community on outreach clinics, etc.).
•
Temples: Please describe how this noble has been
effective in strengthening temple membership
and Freemasonry.
