The choices we make about what to share and how to present our outstanding place of learning and growth are crucial. It was most gratifying, therefore, for us to hear from a current Ma'ayanot parent that this 2 of 20 10/31/15 6:41 PM "The Stream," Ma'ayanot's Online Newsletter, #5 https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=11225855... past Sunday, "your outside truly reflected your inside." This statement was a reflection on effective PR, and we appreciate the importance of that. At the same time, we as a staff aim to be consistently genuine and true to our values and collective mission. This means that a natural outgrowth of our Open House preparations is that we articulate and refine these values repeatedly. In doing so, we acknowledge the ways in which our systems and the execution of our mission must remain consistent, as well as the areas in which institutions are inherently dynamic, and so we must be malleable. The week after Open House, then, has its own unique quality. Having devoted so much time to showcasing these values and how we manifest them, and so reaffirming them for ourselves, we can now view our priorities in sharper focus. The various programs taking place this week alone, which you will read about inside The Stream, served a number of our core beliefs as well as our commitment to ongoing improvement: -that adolescents' emotional lives are essential to who they are, and deserve respect (Dr. Leah Knapp's "Lunch and Learn" for faculty on engaging students productively, and with attention to their needs, when tension arises) -that Medinat Yisrael is the locus of our national aspirations (Zeev Ben Shachar's informative talk about Israel Advocacy) and that regardless of where we live, the situation in Medinat Yisrael should shape our personal experiences and relationship with Hashem (Mrs. Shayna Goldberg's Skype session in which she shared her personal and theological reflections on living in Israel at this challenging time) -that technology, when used in a discerning and intelligent manner, can enhance our students' learning (our professional-development sessions on iPad use in the classroom) -that positive social experiences and achdut are essential to personal development (the sophomore and junior bonding activities) -that we should find opportunities to take joy in shemirat ha-mitzvot (the Friday-night oneg) All this, of course, is in addition to the classroom teaching that reflects our belief that students whose minds are challenged and whose souls are nourished in the embrace of trusted adults have the greatest potential to be kind, religiously committed, and successful. 3 of 20 10/31/15 6:41 PM "The Stream," Ma'ayanot's Online Newsletter, #5 https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=11225855... Open House program, "She is...Ma'ayanot" by speaking about some of the many ways in which each has been encouraged to define herself. Mrs. Bieler then gave an overview of the full Ma'ayanot experience, which continued with breakout sessions for parents and students. These sessions allowed visitors to meet with faculty, current students, parents and alumnae for a taste of our academic programs, panel discussions, Q and A sessions and more. SCHOOL DAYS FOR TEACHERS! In addition to its rich and diverse educational program for students, Ma'ayanot provides a multi-faceted approach to professional development for its faculty, with this week 5 of 20 10/31/15 6:41 PM "The Stream," Ma'ayanot's Online Newsletter, #5 https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=11225855... highlighting a number of such programs. On Monday and Tuesday, Ms. Elana Flaumenhaft, Assistant Principal for Student Life, participated in an JNTP (Jewish New Teachers Project) Mentoring Conference. The program is designed to provide mentors with techniques and strategies to use in helping those new teachers in their schools become more skilled and effective in the classroom. Ms. Sarah Gordon, of our Talmud and Jewish History departments, attended a conference in Experiential Jewish Education, which was sponsored by Yeshiva University, Jewish Theological Seminary and Hebrew Union College. The conference, which was held Monday through Wednesday of this week, was a follow-up to a year-long certificate program which Ms. Gordon completed several years ago. The conference, held at Camp Ramah Daron near Atlanta, focused on the formation of memory and how that impacts the types of experiences and programs we run for our students. The first monthly "Lunch and Learn," coordinated by Mrs. Merav Tal-Timen and Mrs. Shifra Schapiro, was held on Monday, October 19. The featured speaker was Dr. Leah Knapp, who teaches AP Psychology at Ma'ayanot and who has a counseling practice in the area. She addressed the issue of helping students negotiate challenging situations. On Tuesday, October 20, during lunch, faculty members attended the first scheduled Mii (Ma'ayanot iPad Initiative) training session. As reported in previous issues of "The Stream," Ma'ayanot now 6 of 20 10/31/15 6:41 PM "The Stream," Ma'ayanot's Online Newsletter, #5 https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=11225855... provides an iPad for each freshman and sophomore for her exclusive use, and provides iPad carts for use by junior and senior classes. Teachers are being trained in, and given opportunities to explore, the ways in which iPad apps and programs can enhance the classroom experience. Some of the apps which were showcased include Digital ACE, Nearpod, Memrise and Showbie. A FIRSTHAND LOOK AT THE SITUATION IN ISRAEL Students had two opportunities this week to hear from individuals who live in Israel and have been experiencing the current "matsav," or political situation. On Tuesday, Mrs. Shayna Goldberg, formerly of our Halakha faculty who made aliyah with her family several years ago, shared some personal reflections about the recent escalation of violence. In an online presentation to our students, Mrs. Goldberg spoke about Mrs. Shayna Goldberg, in "real time" from Israel some of the ways in which day-to-day life, even banal activities such as vegetable shopping, has become more tense. Mrs. Goldberg also shared her 7 of 20 10/31/15 6:41 PM "The Stream," Ma'ayanot's Online Newsletter, #5 https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=11225855... thoughts in a recent blog post, which you can read by clicking here. On Wednesday, October 21, Mr. Zeev Ben-Shachar, Senior Israel Educator at Jerusalem University, spoke with our students about Israel Advocacy and the Palestinian refugee crisis. He asked students to consider how best to determine which of two opposing narratives (in this case, the Israeli and the Palestinian perspectives and perceptions) to believe. He guided his audience towards the realization one needs to understand the history of the current situation and to connsider who is telling the story in order to form intelligent beliefs and to advocate for those beliefs competently and effectively. Both of these speakers were arranged by MIPAC, the Ma'ayanot Israel Action Committee. Mrs. Andrea Winkler and her husband Rabbi Neil Winkler have shared their thoughts about the matsav on their blog, "Ranenu b'Tzion," which you can access by clicking here. Mrs. Winkler was a member of Ma'ayanot's Office Staff from the school's inception until she and Rabbi Winkler made aliyah last November. Rabbi Winkler is a former teacher and was Tanakh Chair at the Moriah School, and was the founding rabbi of the Young Israel of Fort Lee. G. O. ACTIVITIES THIS WEEK 8 of 20 10/31/15 6:41 PM "The Stream," Ma'ayanot's Online Newsletter, #5 https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=11225855... The G. O. arranged for a petting zoo to visit on Monday, October 19, in recognition of our having read Parshat Noach last Shabbat. Students who wished could pet, feed and have photo-ops with a llama, goat, sheep, chickens and more. Sophomores had the opportunity to stay after school on Wednesday, October 21 for a "lip-sync battle." This, evidently, is pumped-up karaoke, with a competitive edge. There was also time for snacking and socializing. Juniors actually chose to sleep over in school on Thursday night, October 22 for a grade-bonding activity chaperoned by Mrs. Yael Weil of our halakha faculty. Those who wished could begin Members of our junior class at the Challah bake the evening by participating in the Northern New Jersey Challah bake, which drew 9 of 20 10/31/15 6:41 PM "The Stream," Ma'ayanot's Online Newsletter, #5 https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=11225855... a crowd of almost 1000 women to the Rockleigh Country Club. This activity was part of the International Shabbos Project, about which you can learn more by clicking here. Those who did not go to the challah bake relaxed over a pizza dinner and participated in a "video star" competition, and then Go, Rapids! cheered the Rapids on to victory as our Varsity basketball team went up against Westchester on home court. Later in the evening, Mrs. Weil gave a talk which she called "What I Would Say to My Sixteen Year Old." MA'AYANOT STUDENTS EARN EMT CERTIFICATION Sima Zand '16 recently became the latest Ma'ayanot student to earn EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) certification. It took her four moths of study and hand-on experience to become eligible for the New Jersey state exam. The exam consists of both a written and a practical component. Sima is now a probationary member of the TVAC (Teaneck Volunteer Ambulance Corps), where she must be on call for a minimum of four hours each week. Sima estimates that she has gone on at least 70 calls so far and says that this involvement has helped her realize how much she loves helping people.
