Choir Presentation - Salzburg Choral Festival
Music Celebrations International is pleased to present the Salzburg Choral Festival, Jubilate Mozart!, June 28 - July 2, 2017.
The festival will feature a large chorus consisting of mixed voice choirs from across North America. Three days of festival
rehearsals, mingling side-by-side with singers from a variety of backgrounds, will lead festival participants to a grand finale
concert in the historic and stunning Salzurger Dom.
Under the direction of Dr. Jo-Michael Scheibe, Chair of the Thornton School of Music’s department of choral and sacred
music at the University of Southern California, the festival chorus will perform outstanding classical works selected by Dr.
Scheibe. János Czifra, Domkapellmeister of the Dom, will conduct Mozart’s Mass in C Major, “Coronation,” KV 317,
accompanied by the Salzburger Domorchester.
Overseen by a nearly 1,000-year old hillside fortress, Salzburg is quaint, delicate, and utterly charming. This picteresque city
within the heart of the Austrian countryside rests along the northern boundary of the Alps, and literally resonates with the
“Sound of Music."
Salzburg's most famous historical resident is, by far, the 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. As a teenager,
Mozart was employed as a court musician by the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg. During this time, the composer worked in
many genres, including symphonies, sonatas, string quartets, serenades, and a few minor operas. After a brief stay in Paris,
Mozart returned to Salzburg in his early 20's to serve as court organist and concertmaster. In this position, he composed
numerous works of sacred music for Salzburg, including his great Coronation Mass in C Major.
The Salzburg Cathedral – in German, the Salzburger Dom – is a 17th century baroque cathedral dedicated to Saint Rupert
of Salzburg. The site occupied by the Salzburg Cathedral was probably a sacred place for sacrifices in Celtic as well as
Roman times. The first cathedral was built under Saint Vergil of Salzburg, who might have used foundations by St. Rupert.
The first Dom was recorded in 774. The finished church is 466 feet long and 109 feet high at the crossing/dome. The
baroque style of St. Rupert’s can be seen in the choir and the nave.
Among the precious objects to be found in Salzburg’s Cathedral are the baptismal font in which Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart was baptized, the majestic main organ, surrounded by angels playing instruments and crowned by Rupert and
Virgil, as well as the magnificent Cathedral portals made by Scheider-Manzell, Mataré and Manzú.
Jo-Michael Scheibe chairs the Thornton School of Music’s department of choral and sacred music at the
University of Southern California. No stranger to ACDA, Scheibe served as National President (2011-2013),
National President Elect (2008-2011), Western Division President (1991-1993), and National Repertoire and
Standards Chairperson for Community Colleges (1980-1989). Ensembles under his leadership have sung at six
national ACDA conventions, two national conventions of the Music Educators National Conference and at the
National Conference of the National Collegiate Choral Organization. The USC Thornton Chamber Singers have
been one of twenty-five choirs selected to perform at the Tenth World Choral Symposium in Seoul, Korea in
August 2014.
Scheibe has collaborated with Luciano Pavarotti, José Carreras, Salvatore Licitra, Maria Guleghina, Andrea
Bocellu, Kenny Loggins, the Rolling Stones, and Sir Elton John. He prepared choruses for Helmuth Rilling, Sir
Colin Davis and the London Symphony Orchestra, Franz Welser-Möst and the Cleveland Orchestra, and Michael
Tilson Thomas and the New World Symphony. Recordings of his ensembles have been released on the Albany,
Cane, Naxos, Arsis and ANS labels.
A champion of contemporary music, Scheibe regularly commissions and performs new works of choral literature.
Music publishers Walton, Colla Voce Music and Santa Barbara distribute the Jo-Michael Scheibe Choral Series
internationally.
Scheibe returned to USC in 2008 after fifteen years as director of Choral Studies at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, as well as previous
faculty appointments at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff (1985-1993), Long Beach City College (1978-1985), Vintage High School in Napa,
California, and Huntington Beach High School. He received his D.M.A. from the University of Southern California and his B.A. and M.M. degrees from
California State University at Long Beach, where he was presented with the distinguished alumnus award.
Scheibe is in frequent demand nationally and internationally as a clinician, conductor, and adjudicator for choruses at the university, community college,
community, and secondary levels.
Born in Hungary, János Czifra has been the director of music of the Salzburg Dom since 1989. Apart from his
liturgical services, Czifra has arranged the music for the choir and the orchestra of the cathedral for internationally
recognized big events such as the visit of the Pope to Salzburg, Episcopal consecration and jubilees, and festivals
of sacred music and symposiums.
Numerous concert tours led János Czifra and the Cathedral Choir to the USA, to Japan and to various European
cities. Due to his international reputation, Czifra has repeatedly been invited as conductor or juror in Europe and
overseas. In 2002 Janos Czifra was admitted into the European Academy of Science and Arts and thus given the
title “Professor.” He very much values and enjoys the opportunities to work together with the many musical
guests to Salzburg and the cathedral.
