Volteggiando alte sopra un paesaggio eterno,
nel cuore di una città di pietra scura,
le immagini de Le Avventure del Barone di Munchausen
si dimenano su uno schermo gigante
che torreggia su una piazzetta
illuminata dalla luna.
Mentre i bambini giocano,
le persone sedute ai tavolini
sistemate come se fosse un cinema all’aperto,
mangiano, conversano e
guardano catturate dal film.
Altri preferiscono fuggire
cercando salvezza nel bar locale.
Ma non c’è modo di fuggire.
Una luce brilla da dietro il bar
e getta le ombre dei bevitori
attraverso la piazza sullo schermo.
Lì si mescolano con i personaggi del mio film,
in una danza reale
e fantastica allo stesso tempo,
che rimane per sempre impressa nella mia memoria.
L’Umbria Film Festival di Montone
può far suscitare questo tipo di emozioni.
È un evento magico.

Others prefer to escape - to the safety
of the local café.
But there is no escape.
A light shines from behind the bar.
It hurls the shadows of the drinkers
back across the square
and onto the screen.
There they blend with the characters of my film
in a dance of reality and fantasy
that remains forever imprinted on my memory.
The Montone Umbria Film Festival

19 edizioni. Sono tante. Penso sia tempo di bilanci. Non avrei mai pensato di arrivare fino a
questo punto se ripenso a quella prima volta in cui Ed Lewis mi invitò a passare un fine settimana in Umbria e a conoscere Marisa Siciliano Berna e Barbara Nolan. C’era una festa di fund
raising in programma, a casa della scrittrice Lisa Saint Aubin de Terran. Lì conobbi Rachele e
Francesca Antonini per la prima volta. Mi sembrarono bellissime e surreali, così irlandesi e così
umbre. Ora che ci penso, tutto mi sembrava un po’ surreale e affascinante. Quegli strani quadri
alle pareti. Le storie sulla padrona di casa. L’effervescenza di Marisa e Barbara che avevano
quell’energia derivante dalla consapevolezza di essere delle pioniere. Fino al giorno dopo
quando Marisa mi mise in mano una scopa dicendo “ora dobbiamo tutti dare una mano a
sistemare”. Ma non eravamo tutti... Insomma, in una sola serata ho visto racchiuso tutto lo spirito
di un festival che dura da quasi vent’anni: sguardo internazionale con radici nell’identità locale, poche persone che lavorano concretamente, dietro le quinte, per sostenerlo. Gli anni sono
passati e il festival è cresciuto e con lui lo abbiamo fatto tutti. Ci siamo anche un po’ stancati
alle volte, ma sempre ci ha tenuto insieme la voglia e la scommessa di mettere in produzione
un evento unico. Un evento che ci auguriamo che anche quest’anno risulti all’altezza delle vostre aspettative che sappiamo crescere di anno in anno. Apriamo il programma con THE ZERO
THEOREM di Terry Gilliam. Un’opera in cui un uomo è in attesa disperata di una telefonata che
gli cambi la vita. Ma questa telefonata in realtà si rivela essere la ricerca disperata di amore in
una vita chiusa sulla solitudine. Segue un excursus nella vita di coppia con la divertentissima
commedia australiana THE LITTLE DEATH di Josh Lawson, premio del pubblico all’SXSW Film
Festival, che racconta le fantasie sessuali che legano o dividono ogni coppia. Con il bel film
danese STILLE HJERTE di Bille August scopriamo i segreti e i dolori di una famiglia danese che si
prepara ad affrontare un passaggio difficile. A presentare il film la regina del cinema danese,
la grande attrice Ghita Nørby, vincitrice di quattro premi Bodil (l’equivalente dell’Oscar per la
Danimarca). E poi il bel film russo YA NE VERNUS di Ilmar Raag, un classico film on the road, un
rapporto tra due ragazzine fino ad a un percorso di crescita e di rinascita. In questa edizione,
il festival è onorato di dare le chiavi della città a Paul Haggis, due volte premio oscar come
miglior sceneggiatura, e una volta per la regia. Un autore di talento, che ha scritto alcuni tra
i più bei film della storia del cinema: CRASH, THE MILLION DOLLAR BABY, LETTERS FROM IWO
JIMA, FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS. Il programma prevede come di consueto il concorso di corti per
bambini, con la migliore produzione corta mondiale riservata all’infanzia e adolescenza; la
competizione degli Umbriametraggi, con la migliore produzione umbra dell’anno e la tavola
rotonda dal titolo: L’ISLAM IN ITALIA. A incorniciare il festival, la bella mostra di Rebecca Heyl:
CHIAVI DELLA CITTÀ ci riporta alla memoria una parte degli ospiti che sono venuti a Montone.
Infine, visto che ho iniziato parlando di “tempi di bilanci”, voglio spendere poche righe (sempre meno di quelle necessarie) per ringraziare tutti quelli che come me hanno curato, amato,
supportato, immaginato, coccolato questo festival negli anni.
Marisa Berna per pungolare noi tutti ogni anno a fare meglio e di più. Ma anche per avere
il coraggio di portare avanti il festival e di saper prendere delle decisioni importanti. Rachele
Antonini, che coordinando con molta professionalità le traduzioni fatte dagli studenti del Master in Screen Translation dell’Università di Bologna in Forlì, mi ha permesso di andare a cercare
gemme nascoste in giro per il mondo sapendo che sarebbero state fruibili anche per chi non
parlava la lingua nella quali erano stati girati. Terry Gilliam, il nostro presidente onorario, che
con la sua generosità, il suo entusiasmo ci ha sostenuto negli anni insieme a sua moglie Maggy Gilliam. Eve Mongin che con sicurezza si occupa della presentazione delle nostre serate.
Francesca Antonini che con la sua tenacia gestisce ogni anno vari aspetti organizzativi e ci
permette di vederli portati a termine in maniera impeccabile. Francesca Meocci, che ha ereditato la sezione degli Umbriametraggi qualche anno fa e l’ha portata avanti con passione.
Lone Scherfig che continua a pensare che siamo un festival speciale. Rebecca Heyl che con
le sue foto immortala ogni edizione del festival. Ann Clarke con le sue traduzioni eccezionali.
Luca Rossi che cura le proiezioni. Il maestro Rolando Tironzelli e la sua banda per il concerto
di chiusura del festival. Walter Guarini, Sandro Vestrelli e Stefano Bianchini per il loro impegno
assoluto. Le maestre che si occupano dei corti per bambini: Daria Floridi, Lucia Montagnini e
Giuliana Avelli. Lizette Gram Mygind che ha con noi un filo rosso. E soprattutto il sindaco Mirco
Rinaldi che tanto crede nel festival e con lui tutti gli abitanti di Montone e gli ospiti che ci hanno
fatto grandi. Grazie!
We’re now about to hold our 19th edition and it is time for a little reflection on how we got here
and stayed here. Never would I have thought it possible to get as far as this when looking back to
the first time Ed Lewis invited me to spend a weekend in Umbria where I met Marisa Siciliano Berna
and Barbara Nolan. As fate would have it, there was a fundraising party for the Festival at the
home of the writer Lisa Saint Aubin de Teran and there I was introduced to Rachele and Francesca Antonini . They were beautifully surreal – so Irish and Umbrian. In fact everything was strangely
fascinating from the paintings on the wall to the stories of the owner of the house. It seems such a
short, yet such a long time ago when I contemplate the number of Festivals, growing each year in
depth. I clearly remember the day when Marisa put a broom in my hand saying “now everybody
has to help clear up”. But we were not everybody. I had joined a group of passionate, tireless enthusiasts. Real pioneers. In short, in one evening I saw the whole spirit of a unique Festival that has
lasted nearly 20 years: a Festival with an international outlook with roots that give it a strong local
identity, and a few committed, highly energetic people who work hands on behind the curtains to
keep it going. The years have passed, the Festival has grown and we have all grown with it. There
were times when we were all a little tired, but the desire and the challenge to produce this remarkable event kept us together. And keeps you coming from all over the world. An event that we trust
will be up to the standard that you expect and one that evolves in quality and breadth each and
every year. The programme opens with Terry Gilliam’s THE ZERO THEOREM a film which tells the story
of a man anxiously waiting for a phone call that will change his life. But this call in reality turns out to
be the desperate search for love in a life of solitude. Following this film is a highly entertaining Australian comedy, THE LITTLE DEATH from Josh Lawson. Here we are presented with an excursus into
the life of a couple dealing with sexual fantasies which divide or bind - or at the very least, confront
every couple. The Little Death won the Audience Award at the SXSW Film Festival. With the beautiful danish film STILLE HJERTE by Bille August we discover the secrets and the sufferings of a Danish
family who are preparing to face a difficult transition in their lives. To present this film is the queen
of Danish cinema, the great actress Ghita Nørby, winner of 4 Bodil Awards (the Danish equivalent
to the Oscar). After this there is the interesting Russian film YA NE VERNUS by Estonian director Ilmar
Raag, a classic ‘on the road’ movie involving two young girls on a journey of growth and rebirth.
In this edition the Festival is honoured to give the Keys of the City to a double Oscar Winner - Best
Screenwriter and Best Director - to the extremely talented writer, Paul Haggis. He has given us
some of the most fascinating films in cinema history: CRASH, MILLION DOLLAR BABY, LETTERS FROM
IWO JIMA, FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS. The programme also includes the familiar children’s shorts
competition with the best shorts produced worldwide, especially for young children and adolescents; the Umbria Filmmakers competition with the best Umbrian productions of the year and
also the Round Table which this year centres on ISLAM IN ITALY. Underpinning the programme is
Rebecca Heyl’s beautiful exhibition: KEYS TO THE CITY which brings back memories of some of the
guests who have come to Montone. Finally, after having begun talking of ‘reflecting’ I would like
to dedicate a few lines (always fewer than those needed) to thank all those who like me have
cared for, loved, supported, imagined and pampered this Festival over the years. Marisa Berna
for spurring us all on every year to do our best and more. But also having the courage to keep the
Festival going and knowing how to take important decisions. Rachele Antonini who coordinates
with professional precision the translations made by the students of the Master in Screen Translation of the University of Bologna in Forli’. She has made it possible for me to go in search of hidden
gems around the world knowing that they can also be enjoyed by those who don’t speak the
original language of the films. Terry Gilliam, our honorary president, who with his generosity and
enthusiasm has given us invaluable support over the years together with his wife Maggy Gilliam.
Eve Mongin who confidently deals with the presentations of our evenings. Francesca Antonini who
tenaciously manages the various organizational aspects of the Festival each year and helps us to
see them through right to the end in an impeccable way. Francesca Meocci who inherited the
section of Umbrian filmmakers a few years ago and organizes it with passion. Lone Scherfig who
continues to think we are a special festival. Rebecca Heyl with her photographs that immortalize
every edition of the Festival. Ann Clarke with her translations into English. Luca Rossi who takes care
of the screening . Maestro Rolando Tironzelli and his band for the closing concert of the Festival.
Walter Guarini, Sandro Vestrelli and Stefano Bianchini for their total commitment. The teachers who
help organise the giury which giudges short films for children: Daria Floridi, Lucia Montagnini e Giuliana Avelli. Lizette Gram Mykind who has a special relationship with us. And especially the mayor,

È nato a London, Ontario, Canada e si è trasferito in California a
vent’anni. Nel 2006, è diventato il primo sceneggiatore a scrivere
due film vincitori consecutivamente, dell’Oscar al Miglior Film
MILLION DOLLAR BABY (2004) diretto da Clint Eastwood, e
CRASH: CONTATTO FISICO (2005) che lui stesso ha diretto. Per
CRASH: CONTATTO FISICO ha vinto sia l’Oscar come miglior film
che per la migliore sceneggiatura originale, il film ha anche
ricevuto inoltre altre quattro nomination inclusa quella per la
regia. CRASH: CONTATTO FISICO ha ricevuto moltissimi premi
come l’IFP Spirit Awards, lo Screen Actors Guild e il BAFTA.
Nel 2006 tra le sceneggiature di Haggis troviamo le due
produzioni di Clint Eastwood FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS e LETTERE
DA IWO JIMA, quest’ultima gli vale la sua terza nomination
all’Oscar. Il regista canadese ha collaborato alla sceneggiatura
di CASINO ROYALE, che ha ricevuto un notevole consenso per
aver riportato in auge la saga spionistica di James Bond.
Nel 2007 Haggis scrive, dirige e produce NELLA VALLE DI ELAH. Il
film, che vede protagonisti tra gli altri Tommy Lee Jones, Charlize
Theron e Susan Sarandon, racconta di un padre che cerca il
figlio scomparso, accusato di assenza ingiustificata dopo il suo
ritorno dall’Iraq. Jones riceve una nomination all’Oscar come
migliore attore per la sua performance nel film.

Liam Neeson e Elizabeth Banks. Il film segna il primo progetto
della Hwy 61, la società di produzione che Haggis fonda con il
suo amico e co-produttore Michael Nozik.
Per più di vent’anni il regista ha scritto, diretto e prodotto
programmi televisivi come THIRTYSOMETHING e THE TRACEY
ULLMAN SHOW e ha collaborato come scrittore alle sitcom di
Norman Lear. Ha creato l’acclamata, anche se di breve durata,
serie della CBS EZ STREETS, che il New York Times ha definito uno
degli show più influenti di tutti i tempi, notando che senza “non
ci sarebbero stati I SOPRANO”.
Haggis è altrettanto impegnato su tematiche private e sociali.
È il fondatore dell’ARTISTS FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE. Sotto questa
organizzazione, molti dei suoi amici del mondo dello spettacolo
si sono fatti avanti per costruire scuole e cliniche riabilitative per
i bambini delle baracche di Haiti (www.APJNow.org). Haggis è
stato un elemento chiave nel venticinquesimo anniversario del
video di “We Are the World”, che il regista ha diretto in un nuovo
video e usato per scopi benefici per Haiti.
Paul Haggis was born in London, Ontario, Canada and moved
to California when he was twenty. In 2006 he became the first
screenwriter to write two consecutive Best Film Oscar winners:
MILLION DOLLAR BABY (2004) directed by Clint Eastwood and
CRASH (2005) which he himself directed. For CRASH he won
both the Oscar for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. The
film also received an additional four nominations including one
for Haggis’ direction. CRASH has received numerous awards
from associations such as IFP Spirit Awards, the Screen Actors
Guild and BAFTA. In 2006 his screenplays included two Clint
Eastwood productions, FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS and LETTERS
FROM IWO JIMA, the latter earning him his third screenplay
Oscar nomination. He also helped write CASINO ROYALE that
gained considerable praise for reinvigorating the James Bond
spy saga. In 2007 Haggis wrote, directed and produced In THE
VALLEY OF ELAH for Warner Independent Pictures, Samuels
Media and Summit Entertainment. The film which starred Tommy
Lee Jones, Charlize Theron and Susan Sarandon, tells the story of
a father’s search for his missing son who is reported AWOL after
returning from Iraq. Jones earned a Best Actor nomination for
his performance in the film. In 2010 Higgis made THE NEXT THREE
DAYS with Russell Crowe, Liam Neeson and Elizabeth Banks. This
film was produced by Highway 61 and Lionsgate Films. Hwy 61
is the production company that Haggis formed with his friend
and producing partner Michael Nozik. For over twenty years
Haggis has written, directed and produced television shows
such as THIRTYSOMETHING and THE TRACEY ULLMAN SHOW and
has worked as a writer on many Norman Lear sitcoms. He also
created the acclaimed - if short - lived - CBS series EZ STREETS
which the New York Times cited as one of the most influential
shows of all time, noting, that without it “there would be no
SOPRANOS.”
Haggis is equally committed to his private and social concerns.
He is the founder of ARTISTS FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE. In this nonprofit organization many of his friends in the film business have
come forward to build schools and medical clinics serving the
children of the slums of Haiti (www.APJNow.org). Haggis was
a key figure in the 25th anniversary of the video “We are the
World”. He directed a new music video of the classic tune to
raise funds for post-earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.

È considerata la regina dello schermo e del palco
Danese. La carriera di Ghita Nørby abbraccia 60
anni di lavoro in generi diversi. Ha recitato qualsiasi
ruolo, dalla contadinella alla machiavellica matrigna.
Eppure, forse, la sua migliore performance è stata
nel ruolo di una spiritata casalinga di mezza età in
WALTZING REGITZE (1989), girato da Kaspar Rostrup.
Scritturata di malavoglia per la assurda serie comica di
Lars von Trier, THE KINGDOM (1994 e 1997), ha mostrato

artist. With her support cut off and growing legal expenses, Julia is forced to work as a maid
in the same luxury hotel where she was once a frequent guest. Julia’s lawyer Theresa (Maria
Bello) has secured Julia one final chance to change the court’s mind and regain custody of

La Società Filarmonica BRACCIO FORTEBRACCIO nasce a Montone, piccolo
paese medievale in provincia di Perugia, intorno al 1850 per merito di alcuni
cittadini appassionati per la musica. Da allora non ha mai interrotto l’attività,
tranne nei periodi bellici. Ha sottolineato con la sua presenza i momenti di vita
più importanti per la comunità montonese con servizi e concerti. Ne hanno
fatto parte come musicanti oltre trecento persone. Attualmente è formata da
circa quaranta elementi e dal 1973 è diretta dal maestro Rolando Tironzelli.
The Società Filarmonica BRACCIO FORTEBRACCIO was founded around 1850
in Montone, a small medieval village in the province of Perugia, thanks to a
group of citizens with a passion for music. Since then it has never ceased its
activity, except in times of war. It has marked the most important moments in
the life of Montone’s community with services and concerts. More than three
hundred musicians have been part of it. It currently consists of about forty
elements, conducted since 1973 by Maestro Rolando Tironzelli.

La sezione Umbriametraggi, nata nel 2007 come evento sperimentale, dopo nove anni è diventata una presenza consueta e attesa nella programmazione dell’Umbria Film Festival.
La sezione, in particolare, propone una selezione di cortometraggi di filmmaker umbri, scelti attraverso uno specifico concorso. Una giuria formata da soci dell’associazione Umbria
Film Festival ha selezionato quest’anno, tra tutti quelli inviati, undici corti che avranno la possibilità di essere premiati. Le storie, gli stili, le prospettive e i generi diversi che animano gli
Umbriametraggi offrono al pubblico un ulteriore punto di vista sulle vie e sulle sperimentazioni del cinema indipendente. Esperti, appassionati e curiosi possono così trovare nel borgo umbro,
tra il teatro e la piazza, tra i vicoli e gli scorci panoramici, un luogo d’elezione per nuovi spunti, incontri, scambi e contaminazioni.
The Umbriametraggi section, created in 2007 as an experimental event, has become after nine years a familiar and much-awaited event in the programme of Umbria Film Festival.
The section, in particular, presents a selection of short films by Umbrian filmmakers, chosen through a specific competition. This year, a jury formed by members of the Umbria Film Festival has
selected, among several entries, eleven short films that will have the chance to be rewarded. The different stories, styles, perspectives and genres presented at Umbriametraggi will offer the
audience a further point of view on the trends and experimentations of independent filmmaking. Experts, enthusiasts and curious will find in the Umbrian village, between the theater and the
piazza, among the narrow streets and panoramic views, a place of choice for new ideas, meetings, exchanges and interactions.

vincitrice di un Ig Nobel Prize qualche anno fa, Il segreto della nascita dei nodi è uno degli
episodi che andrà a comporre Sex Novo (sex in the background), il secondo film in progress
sul sesso dei due registi-attori. Il primo, Sex Equo (sex in the foreground) è stato terminato
e presentato nel 2011. I due sottotitoli dei film, ispirati a due famosi dischi di Duke Ellington
(Piano in the foreground e Piano in the background), indicano il modo in cui viene condotta
la ricerca sulla tematica sessuale.
Follow us and find out the secrets of how knots are created. Inspired by scientific research,
winner of an Ig Nobel Prize a few years ago, this film is one of the episodes that forms part
of Sex Novo (sex in the background), the second film in progress on this theme by the two
director-actors. The first, Sex Equo (sex in the foreground) was presented in 2011. The subtitles
of the two films, inspired by two of Duke Ellington’s famous records (Piano in the foreground
and Piano in the background ) give an indication of the way in which the research into this

del cortometraggio è evidenziare il comportamento dell’uomo, invitando a riconoscere simili
situazioni nella vita quotidiana.
This short film is a reflection on the theme of femicide. The story is seen from a man’s point of
view while the woman’s role is embodied in a plant. The aim of this short is to show how the
man’s behaviour represents the male approach to women in everyday life.

L’Islam è la seconda religione in Italia per numero di aderenti. C’è bisogno più che mai di dialogo con le comunità musulmane quale occasione di confronto e
d’incontro utile per trovare soluzioni concrete ai problemi di integrazione interculturale. L’Islam è una realtà complessa e molto articolata, anche dal punto di vista
politico. Stereotipi, luoghi comuni e un diffuso clima xenofobo impediscono agli italiani una conoscenza, sia pur elementare, del mondo islamico. Tale situazione rende
difficilissimo affrontare la questione. Occorre, invece, evitare le semplificazioni e il clima di diffidenza e intolleranza nei confronti dell’Islam e, al contempo, favorire
l’integrazione dei musulmani anche al fine di prevenire, isolare e contrastare i fenomeni di radicalismo ed estremismo che, purtroppo, hanno determinato tragiche
vicende anche in Europa. “Chi è orfano della casa dei diritti difficilmente sarà figlio della casa dei doveri” diceva il Cardinal Martini. Con tale logica ci proponiamo di
riflettere insieme sul tema dell’integrazione possibile dell’Islam in Italia.

Islam is Italy’s second largest practised religion. Now, more than ever, we need to create a dialogue with the Muslim community where we can discuss the challenges of
intercultural integration and find concrete solutions. Islam is a complex and multifaceted reality from a political as well as religious point of view. Stereotypes, preconceived
notions and a widespread xenophobic climate prevent most Italians from having even an elementary knowledge of the Islamic world. This current climate of mistrust
makes it considerably difficult to examine the question. We must avoid simplification and intolerance towards Islam while at the same time favouring the integration of
Muslims. Our aim must be to prevent and isolate the tragic phenomena of radicalism and extremism that have unfortunately been seen as the norm for Muslims even in
Europe. “One who is an orphan left outside the house of rights, will uneasily be a son in the house of duties” said Cardinal Martini. Bearing in mind that logic we propose
a reflection on the theme of possible integration of Islam in Italy.

Che cosa è una fotografia? È una testimonianza. Un fermo immagine di un momento che poi passa e finisce. È un fissare il tempo per un attimo.
È imprimere un istante per sempre. È renderlo immortale e tangibile. Ecco, le fotografie di Rebecca Heyl del festival sono proprio tutto questo.
Le sue fotografie ci permettono di rivedere i tanti artisti che sono venuti all’UFF. Sorridenti, felici con le chiavi in mano, contenti dell’accoglienza
che hanno avuto. Emozionati! A partire da Terry Gilliam, la nostra prima chiave, che saluta un “Braccio” in costume. Ogni ospite nelle foto
ostenta un po’ il suo carattere e la sua provenienza. Peter Mullan che ci onora con il kilt. Mike Leigh che mostra orgoglioso la chiave davanti al
suo occhio indagatore. Oppure Lone Scherfig, in tutta la sua eleganza, è estasiata dell’atmosfera che la circonda. Ralph Fiennes che sfoggia
la chiave come fosse un trofeo. O Colin Firth che la tiene al petto mentre il sindaco lo ringrazia per essere venuto. Ancora Peter Lord che la
esibisce fiero accanto al poster dell’edizione. Infine Bahman Ghobadi che ne va orgolioso per le strade del paese. Ma dove sono gli anni
mancanti? Di quelli non abbiamo memoria perché mancano le foto o perché se ne è persa traccia. Allora questa mostra è proprio l’occasione
per rivedere ed emozionarsi davanti a tanti talenti che sono venuti al festival, che sono passati a Montone. Rebecca Heyl è un’artista che ci
segue da 19 anni. Il suo talento è al servizio dell’UFF in modo discreto e delicato. Rebecca, che come mi disse una volta, ha trovato l’AMERICA
in Italia. Rebecca, senza le tue fotografie si sarebbe persa la memoria del Festival, e di conseguenza il Festival stesso… per favore, continua a
raccontarci per altri 20 anni…
L’UMBRIA FILM FESTIVAL non è un festival a concorso, ma una delle caratteristiche principali che lo rende unico
nel panorama delle manifestazioni di questa caratura, è quella di invitare ogni anno un autore, regista, attore o
personalità del cinema internazionale e fargli dono delle Chiavi della Città di Montone.
Donare le ‘Chiavi della Città’ è un atto simbolico che risale al Medioevo quando città come Montone erano
circondate da mura con portoni che venivano chiusi nottetempo con serrature e chiavi, a scopo di difesa.
Offrire quindi le chiavi della città significa attribuire potere a un ospite illustre: il permesso di andare ovunque
in quella città. Infatti tutti coloro che hanno ricevuto questo riconoscimento sono entrati col proprio cinema
nella piazza di Montone fra la gente, nel suo cuore sociale e culturale. Il primo a ricevere la chiave è stato Terry
Gilliam nel 1998, ora Presidente Onorario del festival. Nell’edizione 2013 hanno ricevuto questa onorificenza il
regista inglese Stephen Frears, i suoi film come THE QUEEN e LE RELAZIONI PERICOLOSE hanno vinto vari premi
internazionali fra cui anche l’Oscar, e il regista danese Bille August, vincitore per ben due volte della Palma
d’Oro a Cannes con CON LE MIGLIORI INTENZIONI e PELLE ALLA CONQUISTA DEL MONDO, quest’ultimo vincitore
anche di un premio Oscar.
What is a photograph? It’s a testimony. A still image of a moment in time. Just an instant that lasts for all time, engraved forever on our memory.
Rebecca Heyl’s photographs of the Festival encapsulate all of this. They help us to have another look at all the artists who have been to the
UFF. Smiling, happy, holding the Keys in their hands, delighted with the welcome they have received. Initially Terry Gilliam, our first Key, greeting a
“Braccio” in full costume. All the guests in the photographs reveal a little of their character and their origins. Peter Mullan who honours us with his
kilt. Mike Leigh who proudly holds the Key in front of his inquiring eyes. The elegant Lone Scherfig enchanted by the atmosphere surrounding her.
Ralph Fiennes who holds up the Key as if it were a trophy. Colin Firth who holds it to his chest while the Mayor thanks him for coming. Peter Lord
who proudly shows it next to the Festival poster. Finally Bahman Ghbadi who walks proudly along the streets of the town. Unfortunately some years
are missing because there are no photographs or they have been lost in time. The memories of those years are slowly fading because there are
no photographs to bear witness to the events. This exhibition is the perfect occasion to look back and feel the excitement of having had so many
talented guests at the Festival and in Montone.
Rebecca Heyl is an artist who has been following us for nineteen years. She has given her time and talent to the Festival in a discreet and delicate
way and, as she once told me, she has found AMERICA in Italy. Rebecca, without your photographs we could not share with others our memory of
the Festival and consequently the Festival itself. Please continue to tell our story for another twenty years.
The UMBRIA FILM FESTIVAL is not competitive. One of the characteristics that makes it unique in the world of Film
Festivals is our invitation each year to a writer, film director, actor or international cinema personality to whom we
present, with due ceremony, the Keys to the City of Montone.
Presenting the ‘Keys to the City’ is a symbolic act dating back to medieval times when cities like Montone were
enclosed by walls, the entry being solely through the large gates which every night were locked for defence
purposes. Offering the keys to the city therefore carried considerable meaning, attributing power and trust to an
illustrious visitor who was permitted to move about freely. We continue this tradition today by giving ceremonial
keys to recognise those who have made a special contribution to the Festival.
The first to receive the keys was Terry Gilliam in 1998, now Honorary President of the Festival. In 2013 two people
received this honour; the English film director Stephen Frears, his films THE QUEEN and DANGEROUS LIAISONS won
various international prizes including an Academy Award, and the Danish film director Bille August, twice winner
of the Palme d’Or at Cannes with THE BEST INTENSIONS and PELLE THE CONQUEROR which won an Academy
Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

BEN ADLER
Ha studiato cinema a New York, Praga e Parigi. I suoi cortometraggi
sono stati scelti per numerosi film festival in tutto il mondo e sono
distribuiti dalla Shorts international. Ben sta attualmente sviluppando
alcuni lungometraggi e nel contempo ha assistito Wes Anderson
nella produzione di GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL e sta preparando il suo
prossimo film.
He studied film making in New York, Prague, and Paris. His short films
have been selected at film festivals around the world. They are
distributed by Shorts International. Ben is currently developing feature
projects and he worked as assistant to Wes Anderson on THE GRAND
BUDAPEST HOTEL and on his next film.
BILLE AUGUST
È nato nel 1948. Ha studiato come direttore della fotografia e fotografo
a Stoccolma. Si è laureato in cinematografia presso la Scuola
Nazionale di Cinema in Danimarca nel 1973. Prima del suo debutto
con IN MY LIFE nel 1978, August ha lavorato come cameraman in
produzioni danesi e svedesi. Nel 1983-84 ha diretto tre film di successo
per bambini e ragazzi, ZAPPA, IN THE WORLD OF BUSTER e TWIST AND
SHOUT. La svolta internazionale arriva con PELLE ALLA CONQUISTA DEL
MONDO, vincitore della Palma d’Oro a Cannes nel 1988 e di un Oscar
nel 1989. August ha ricevuto la sua seconda Palma d’Oro nel 1991 per
la produzione svedese CON LE MIGLIORI INTENZIONI, scritto da Ingmar
Bergman. August ha diretto una serie di co-produzioni internazionali,
tutte tratte da opere letterarie: LA CASA DEGLI SPIRITI (1993), JERUSALEM
(1996), IL SENSO DI SMILLA PER LA NEVE (1997), I MISERABILI (1998) e
UNA CANZONE PER MARTIN (2001). Oltre a ricevere numerosi premi
cinematografici, Bille August è stato premiato per il suo lavoro di regista
con il “Reale Ordine Cavalleresco” danese e svedese e con l’ordine
francese “Chevalier dans l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres”.

Director of three acclaimed films for children and youth 1983-84,
ZAPPA, IN THE WORLD OF BUSTER, and TWIST AND SHOUT. International
breakthrough with PELLE THE CONQUEROR, which received the
Palme d’Or in Cannes, 1988, and an Oscar in 1989. August received
his second Palme d’Or in 1991 for the Swedish production THE BEST
INTENTIONS, written by Ingmar Bergman. August has directed a
number of international co-productions, all literary adaptations: THE
HOUSE OF THE SPIRITS (1993), JERUSALEM (1996), SMILLA’S SENSE OF
SNOW (1997), LES MISÉRABLES (1998) and A SONG FOR MARTIN (2001).
Apart from numerous film awards Bille August has been honoured for
his work as a film director with both the Danish and the Swedish “Royal
Order of Chivalry” and the French order “Chevalier dans l’ordre des
Arts et des Lettres”.
MATHIEU AUVRAY
Esordisce nel 2002 come animatore e grafico nel collettivo NOBRAIN
con dei numerosi videoclip. Nel 2004 gira, in collaborazione con
Stéphane Bève, il video THE WAY WE HAVE CHOSEN per il gruppo OMR
e in seguito il cortometraggio KONTROL ESKAPE. Prosegue il suo lavoro
di regia con dei cortometraggi molto grafici (MEISCHEID, PETROLINE)
prima di dare vita all’animazione BABIÒLES, una serie (24x3’) andata in
onda su Canal+ nel 2012/2013. Continua a realizzare dei cortometraggi
(FRANSSISS, JEAN-MICHEL LE CARIBOU DES BOIS, DRING OF THE DEAD),
in contemporanea porta avanti molti progetti di serie televisive
(STEVE, JEAN-MICHEL SUPER CARIBOU, NON-NON) e un progetto di
lungometraggio: GOOSEBERRY, di cui realizza il pilota. Si laurea nel 2013
con il Grand Prix Animation della SACD.
Mathieu Auvray (1981) began his career in 2002 as an animator and
graphic designer in the FRENCH NOBRAIN collective creating a number
of videoclips. In 2004 with Stéphane Bève he directed the music video
THE WAY WE HAVE CHOSEN for the OMR group followed by the short
film KONTROL ESKAPE. He continued making shorts based heavily on
graphic design (MEISCHIED, PETROLINE) before creating the animation
show BABIÒLES (24x3’) shown on Canal+ in 2012-2013. He continued
with shorts (FRANSSISS, JEAN-MICHEL THE WOODLAND CARIBOU, DRING
OF THE DEAD) at the same time working on a number of projects for
television (STEVE, JEAN-MICHEL SUPER CARIBOU, NON-NON) as well as
a project for a full-length animated film, GOOSEBERRY. He graduated in
2013 with the Grand Prix Animation of SACD.
JOHN BANANA

He is a computer graphic artist, animator, director, producer... He has
no time to get bored, nor to rest. With more than 15 years experience
in the digital industry, John Banana leads Digital Banana Studio, a Paris
based small animation studio. Since its creation, he directed dozens of
commercials and TVseries pilotes. He played a major role in the birth
of the popular crazy RAVING RABBIDS, and helped translate to the 3D
world for TV characters like MAYA THE BEE, HEIDI, ZOU, WALDO, ZORRO,
LITTLE VAMPIRE etc... When he has time and money he directs or help
the others direct shortfilms.
GUILLAUME BLANCHET

Is a French copywriter who left his homeland to settle down in Montreal
in 2003, after two years spent in Parisian advertising agencies. As
a copywriter, his skills were mostly restricted to words. Guillaume is a
copywriter who decided to explore the other side of creativity in
advertising : the image. For a decade, he has developed a passion for
stopmotion animations and short films, using his writing skills to enhance
his images. Through his work, Guillaume tries to bring emotions through
images that people can relate to for they understand how it’s made.
MARIE-SOPHIE CHAMBON
All’età di 21 anni ha frequentato il corso di sceneggiatura del Fémis
per imparare a raccontare delle storie tramite la sceneggiatura.
Con 2 lungometraggi e 3 cortometraggi all’anno, è inevitabile
che dopo 4 anni abbia stabilito dei legami. Ha anche scoperto la
co-sceneggiatura con altri registi e in particolar modo con una
regista, Leyla Bouzid. Successivamente, ha incontrato altri colleghi
sceneggiatori, in particolare Anaïs Carpita, con la quale ha scritto molti
dei suoi attuali progetti per la televisione e il cinema. È stata selezionata
per presentare il suo progetto al Forum degli autori presso il festival
degli sceneggiatori di Bourges.
When she was 21 years old, entered the Scenario Department of The
Fémis, to learn how to tellstories by becoming a screenwriter. With
2 feature films and three short films a year, inevitably, over 4 years, it
creates links. But those meetings don’t stop there, she also discovers
co-writing with directors and especially with a director, Leyla Bouzid,
with whom she co-wrote different projects. Then, she met other writer
comrades, especially Anaïs Carpita, with whom she is writing many of
her projects today, in television or cinema: she was selected to present
her projects at the Forum Author of the screenwriters’ festival of Bourges.
PATRICK DELAGE

He was born in 1967 in France. After graduating from the Parisian art
school Duperre, and the animation school Gobelins, Patrick Delage
worked for 14 years at Disney as an 2D animator before joining Pixar
Studios in 2006 where he worked as a CGI animator on WALL-E and
“RATATOUILLE”. Back in France in 2009, he worked on DESPICABLE ME
and then returned to traditional animation with ZARAFA. He currently
works as a Animation director on ASTERIX: THE DOMAIN OF THE GODS
and co-directs with Toma Leroux the feature film based on LUNE.
TERRY GILLIAM

Over a forty-year filmmaking career, has directed a number
of visually stunning pictures, which have championed the
power of imagination and dared cinemagoers to view the
world differently. Born near Minneapolis, Minnesota, Gilliam
settled in London in the 1960s where he became a member

co-directed MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL (1975) with
Terry Jones. He was production designer for MONTY PYTHON’S
LIFE OF BRIAN (1979), for which he was also actor, writer, and
animator. For MONTY PYTHON’S MEANING OF LIFE (1983),
Gilliam’s chief contribution was a typically eccentric short film,
THE CRIMSON PERMANENT ASSURANCE. Gilliam’s first outing
as sole director was JABBERWOCKY in 1977, which he then
followed with TIME BANDITS (1981). In 1985, Gilliam released his
ambitious BRAZIL, which was given a Best Film award from the
Los Angeles Film Critics, and two Academy Award® nominations
(Original Screenplay and Art Direction). This was followed by the
sumptuous THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN (1988),
shot in Rome with John Neville, Robin Williams and Oliver Reed.
It gained four Academy Award nominations. Gilliam made his
next three feature films in the United States. THE FISHER KING
(1991), starring Jeff Bridges and Robin Williams, won the Silver
Lion at the Venice International Film Festival. TWELVE MONKEYS
(1995) followed, a critically-acclaimed time travel story, featuring
Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt. In 1998, FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS
VEGAS was released, adapted from Hunter S. Thompson’s
novel, featuring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro. In 2000,
Gilliam went to Spain to make THE MAN WHO KILLED DON
QUIXOTE. Shooting was suspended after severe weather and
actor injury. Gilliam then made THE BROTHERS GRIMM (2005) in
Prague with Matt Damon and Heath Ledger. He then made the
haunting TIDELAND (2005), with Jodelle Ferland and Jeff Bridges.
Gilliam co-wrote and directed THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR
PARNASSUS (2009) with Heath Ledger, Christopher Plummer and

TOMA LEROUX

He was born in 1974 in France. With a degree in Aesthetics of
art, Toma Leroux went to the Parisian film school FEMIS in 1998, to
study scriptwriting. At 2002, he started to direct a documentary
series for TV5, ARTE and worked in parallel as a script doctor.
He then directed and wrote scripts for advertising (IBM) and
television series (France 3), and published an anthology of
cinema (published by Studyrama). He created LUNE in 2004 and,
since then, works with Patrick Delage on developing this project
into a feature film.

Job, Joris & Marieke is a Dutch studio for animation, illustration,
character design and music. Their work can be described as cute,
funny, poetic and sometimes disturbing. The studio was founded in
2007 in Utrecht by Job Roggeveen, Joris Oprins en Marieke Blaauw.
They work on commercials, educational projects, music videos and
short films. The music for all their work is composed by Happy Camper,
an award winning music project by Job. And obviously in their turn the
studio creates all the music videos for Happy Camper. Their short film
MUTE won several international awards, amongst which the Grand
Prix and Audience award on the Holland Animation Film Festival. Their
most known work is the music clip I’LL TAKE YOU ALONG for rapper
Gers Pardoel. With 17 million views it was the best viewed Dutch music
video ever on Youtube. In 2012 the children’s series THE TUMBLIES was
released. Job, Joris & Marieke worked on the concept and character
design. It’s being broadcasted in Holland, Italy, Turkey and Indonesia.

ALEKSANDER LEINES NORDAAS
È un regista, fotografo e scrittore norvegese, nato a Mosjøen, una piccola
città nella Norvegia centrale. Ha debuttato con il cortometraggio
IN CHAMBERS, ma già prima aveva diretto numerosi video musicali,
pubblicitari, programmi televisivi e persino un lungometraggio a costo

BRANDON OLDENBURG

i Reel FX Creative Studios specializzandosi in design ed effetti speciali

He is an award-winning illustrator, designer, sculptor and film director.
He co-founded Moonbot Studios and co-directed the studio’s
Academy Award® winning film, THE FANTASTIC FLYING BOOKS OF MR.
MORRIS LESSMORE. His most recent project at the studio is a film and
game experience for Chipotle Mexican Grill called THE SCARECROW,
which he co-directed with Limbert Fabian. Prior to launching
MOONBOT, Oldenburg co-founded Reel FX Creative Studios
specializing in design and special effects for clients as Troublemaker
Studios, Pixar, Disney, DreamWorks, and Blue Sky Studios. Additionally,
Oldenburg and renowned designer Brad Oldham collaborated
on a giant, nationally acclaimed sculptural series for a $1.4 million
commission called THE TRAVELING MAN. His illustrations have graced
the covers for prestigious authors’ books such as Elmore Leonard and
Michael Chabon.

Ha preso il DMA (Diplôme des Métiers d’Art) in animazione nel 2013
alla EMCA (Ecole des Métiers du Cinéma d’Animation) dove si è
specializzata in regia. Lavorando primariamente con una tecnologia
ibrida che combina insiemi di volumi e animazione 2D. Si è avvicinata
al mondo dell’animazione utilizzando la tecnica della carta ritagliata
con un nuovo approccio per il progetto EN SORTANT DE L’ÉCOLE.
She has a DMA animation in 2013 at the EMCA where she specializes in
directing. Working primarily with a hybrid technique of having volume
sets and 2D animation, it becomes very close to the cut paper and
book with the project FRESH OUT OF SCHOOL, a new approach to this
concept..
ILMAR RAAG
È lo sceneggiatore e regista di KLASS (2007), film distribuito in 91 paesi,
vincitore di 25 premi, che ha partecipato a 70 festival, è stato adattato in
una pluripremiata serie Tv di successo. Tra i suoi lungometraggi troviamo
KERTU. LOVE IS BLIND (2013) and UNE ESTONIENNE À PARIS, premiato al
Film Festival di Locarno nell’Agosto 2012. Ilmar ha conseguito un master
in sceneggiatura presso la Ohio University e lavora come esperto
per EURIMAGES and Media Plus. È stato Responsabile Acquisizioni e
Presidente del consiglio di amministrazione per Estonian National
Television e un rappresentante nazionale presso EURIMAGES. Inoltre
è membro del Consiglio audiovisivo “Cultural Endowment of Estonia”,
e membro del Consiglio di amministrazione della Fondazione Estone
per i Film. Ilmar è anche un famoso giornalista, docente e consulente
mediatico.
He is the writer and director of KLASS (2007), which sold to 91 countries,
won 25 awards from 70 festivals, and was adapted into a successful,
award-winning TV-series. Ilmar’s latest features are KERTU. LOVE IS BLIND
(2013) and A LADY IN PARIS premiered at Locarno Film Festival in August
2012. Ilmar has an MA in screenwriting from Ohio University and works
as an expert for EURIMAGES and MEDIA Plus. He has acted as Head of
Acquisitions and Chairman of the Board for Estonian National Television,
and been a national representative at EURIMAGES. In addition he’s a
member of the Audiovisual Council of Cultural Endowment of Estonia, and
a member of the Board of Directors of the Estonian Film Foundation. Ilmar
is also an acclaimed columnist in newspapers, a lecturer, and a highly
requested media consultant.
PEDRO SOLIS GARCIA
Proviene dal mondo dei videogame, grazie al quale ha sviluppato molte
capacità. Ha lavorato come 3D artist e co-produttore di innumerevoli
giochi per PC e console. Ha partecipato come 3D artist alla produzione
dei cortometraggi animati TADEO JONES and TADEO JONES AND THE
TEMPLE OF DOOM. Con THE BRUXA, il suo primo film come regista e
sceneggiatore, ha vinto il premio Goya 2011 per il miglior cortometraggio
animato e altri premi importanti. IN THE ADVENTURES OF TADEO JONES,
uscito nel 2012, ha lavorato come direttore di produzione. Attualmente sta
lavorando a due film come direttore di produzione: l’avventura fantasy
nello spazio, CAPTURE THE FLAG, e il secondo episodio di TAD, THE LOST
EXPLORER uscito nel 2012. STRINGS è il suo secondo cortometraggio come
sceneggiatore e regista.
He comes from the video game world, in which he has developed
different tasks. He has worked from 3D Artist to co-producer on several titles
for PC and consoles. He has participated as a 3D artist in the animated
shorts TADEO JONES and TADEO JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM. With
THE BRUXA, his first film as director and screenwriter, he was awarded with
the 2011 Goya Award for The Best Animated Short Film and some other
important prizes. THE ADVENTURES OF TADEO JONES was performed in 2012,
film in which he worked as a director of Production. Now, he is working in
two films as director of production, the space fantasy adventure CAPTURE
THE FLAG and the second installment to 2012’s TAD, THE LOST EXPLORER.
STRINGS is his second short film as a scriptwriter and director.

Questa XIX° edizione dell’Umbria Film Festival di Montone, si avvale della
collaborazione con la Vice-presidenza della Scuola di Lingue e Letterature,
Traduzione ed Interpretazione dell’Università di Bologna. La collaborazione
per l’edizione 2015 del festival prevede il coinvolgimento di cinque studenti
del corso di laurea triennale in Mediazione Linguistica Interculturale e del
corso di laurea Magistrale in Traduzione (Azzurra Giuli, Micaela Mamini,
Giulia Illica Magrini, Antonella Massaro e Ilaria Turri) che sotto la supervisione
della Dott.ssa Antonini, hanno realizzato i sottotitoli in italiano delle opere
presentate al Festival.
This 19th edition of the Umbria Film Festival of Montone, will avail itself of
the cooperation with the School of Languages and Literatures, Translation
and Interpreting of the University of Bologna. Under Dr. Rachele Antonini’s
supervision, five students of the first cycle degree in Intercultural and Linguistic
Mediation and of the second cycle degree in Translation (Azzurra Giuli,
Micaela Mamini, Giulia Illica Magrini, Antonella Massaro e Ilaria Turri) have
subtitled into Italian all the foreign films that will be presented at the Festival.

Nel complesso del sistema audiovisivo italiano, i festival rappresentano un soggetto fondamentale per
la promozione, la conoscenza e la diffusione della
cultura cinematografica e audiovisiva, con un’attenzione particolare alle opere normalmente poco rappresentate nei circuiti commerciali come ad esempio
il documentario, il film di ricerca, il cortometraggio. E
devono diventare un sistema coordinato e riconosciuto dalle istituzioni pubbliche, dagli spettatori e dagli
sponsor. Per questo motivo e per un concreto spirito
di servizio è nata nel novembre 2004 l’Associazione
Festival Italiani di Cinema (Afic). Gli associati fanno riferimento ai principi di mutualità e solidarietà che già
hanno ispirato in Europa l’attività della Coordination
Européenne des Festivals. Inoltre, accettando il regolamento, si impegnano a seguire una serie di indicazioni deontologiche tese a salvaguardare e rafforzare
il loro ruolo. L’Afic nell’intento di promuovere il sistema
festival nel suo insieme, rappresenta già oggi più di
trenta manifestazioni cinematografiche e audiovisive
italiane ed è concepita come strumento di coordinamento e reciproca informazione. Aderiscono all’Afic
le manifestazioni culturali nel campo dell’audiovisivo
caratterizzate dalle finalità di ricerca, originalità, promozione dei talenti e delle opere cinematografiche
nazionali ed internazionali. L’Afic si impegna a tutelare
e promuovere, presso tutte le sedi istituzionali, l’obiettivo primario dei festival associati.
Film festivals are very important to the Italian audiovisual system in order to promote, spread and teach
about cinema and audiovisual culture, for they pay
particular attention to works that are shown very little
in the commercial circuits--documentaries, research
films, and short films. Film festivals should become a
well coordinated system, recognized by public institutions, sponsors, and audience. Therefore, in November
2004, the Italian Cinematographic Festival Association
(AFIC) was founded to coordinate and give assistance to the festivals. The members are inspired by the
principles of solidarity and mutuality that are at the
base of the Coordination Européenne des Festivals
de Cinéma. Furthermore, by accepting the regulation,
members pledge to follow deontological indications
to preserve and strengthen their role.
In order to reach its goal, today AFIC represents more
than thirty Italian cinema and audiovisual events to
help coordinate and spread information amongst the
different cultural events.The audiovisual events that are
AFIC members have purposes of research, orginality,
and promotion of talents as well as national and international cinematographic works. AFIC aims to protect
and promote the main objective of the festivals in all
institutional offices.
